English translation 1
It is the custom of Israel that "one begins with a blessing" –
It is the custom of Israel that "one begins with a blessing" –
and in the well-known1 verse "Blessed is he who comes in the name of Hashem; we bless you from the House of Hashem."
What this verse contains
(as discussed above *1)
is the special content that a gathering of Jews has:
The individual becomes a part of the reality of the many,
therefore it first says "Blessed is he who comes" in the singular,
and immediately afterward "we bless you" in the plural.
For since upon arriving,
the individual's intention is to become included and joined with the many,
consequently, from the outset "in the place where a person's will and thought are, there he is found"2,
he immediately becomes a part of the congregation –
therefore one can say to all individuals in the singular "Blessed is he who comes";
דערפאר קען מען זאגן צו אלע יחידים בלשון יחיד "ברוך הבא";
And afterward there is also the advantage of a multitude of individuals,
as this is regarding the matter of "in a multitude of people is the glory of the King"3 –
"we bless you from the House of Hashem."
[And as we indeed find regarding the matter of blessing,
that there is a special advantage in the blessing of the many:
Regarding Grace after Meals (which is the one and only blessing that is, according to all opinions, from the Torah4 [unlike the blessing of the Torah, regarding which there are differences of opinion5],
as it is explicitly stated6 "and you shall eat and be satisfied and bless") we see that the more people who participate in the blessing, the blessing becomes in a more elevated manner:
There is an advantage of three over one,
ten over three7,
and according to the opinion of R. Yehuda Gaon8 also in a hundred and a thousand and so forth].
This advantage in a matter of the many is found in the Torah,
as the Gemara says at the beginning of Tractate Berachot9 that although there is an advantage for an individual who sits and studies Torah, as it is stated10 "in every place where I cause My name to be mentioned, I will come to you and bless you",
nevertheless there is a greater advantage for two,
three and so forth.
And the reason for this is –
because also in the Torah itself we find both the advantage of unity,
and the advantage of multiplicity
(as will be explained),
and since it is so in the Torah,
it descends from there also into the world in general and into Jews in particular.
The explanation of this:
It is known the statement of our Sages, may their memory be for a blessing,11 "He looked into the Torah and created the world",
meaning that the entire reality of the world is taken from the Torah.
The simple explanation of this is,
that since the Torah tells about the creation of the heavens and the earth and all their hosts,
when one wishes to investigate and delve into the matters of the world –
if one does so by delving into the matters of the world itself,
one will sometimes succeed and sometimes not;
וועט מען אמאל צוטרעפן און אמאל ניט;
However, when one toils in the Torah,
it is certain that he will attain that matter,
to the extent that the Torah is the master over the world,
as is known the words of the Yerushalmi12 on the verse13 "God has spoken once",
that the court can change the reality of the world retroactively
(meaning not only a novelty for the future, but retroactively).
And as has been discussed several times, the proof for this matter,
that all these matters of the world have their source in the Torah,
is from the fact that R. Yehoshua ben Chananya14 brought a proof regarding the gestation period of a snake
("a snake, how long it gestates and gives birth")
from the Torah.
That there it speaks about the snake,
not as it stands at the highest level,
but as it stands at the ultimate low,
even standing in such a state, the snake's entire existence is completely dependent on the Torah and is learned from the Torah!
[This is also the explanation in the continuation of the story of R. Yehoshua ben Chananya:
Speaking to the opposing sages etc. –
he said to them,
that even regarding a "snake",
an opponent of the Torah etc.,
there is no choice and one must come to the Torah,
and in the well-known phrase15 "His command keeps their spirit alive",
and even regarding the matter of "how long it gestates and gives birth",
regarding giving birth to more snakes,
which is seemingly the opposite of Torah etc. and the opposite of G-dliness (both from the aspect of the snake itself and from the aspect of its procreative activity) –
"His command keeps their spirit alive",
to the extent that if one wishes to know how it operates "in contrast to this",
the true way to do so is
through studying Torah].
And from this it is understood all the more so and a fortiori regarding those matters that are auxiliary to Torah,
and especially Israel, a people close to Him16,
that Hashem our God is close to us in every place and at every time,
and in the language of the verse17 "And behold, Hashem was standing over him" which simply refers to our father Jacob,
but the Alter Rebbe18 interprets that this applies to every Jew,
as he writes in the Siddur
(which is something equal for every soul)
right at its beginning,
even before Modeh Ani,
"and through this he will remember Hashem who stands over him" –
This means that even before a Jew prays or learns etc.,
he is already in a state of "And behold, Hashem was standing over him"
(which is similar to "I have set Hashem before me always"19),
similar to what the Gemara says in Berachot20 "The Divine Presence preceded and came" –
Thus it is certainly
that all these matters of Jews have their source in Torah.
And regarding our matter:
When one wishes to know how the manner of gathering together should be among Jews,
the unity of the multitude together with the advantage of multiplicity –
one must learn this from Torah.
In Torah we see,
that at the beginning of the discussion there are many and various opinions,
and there must be many opinions, until a manner of "It is the Torah that excites me"21,
which emphasizes the advantage of the study of each individual by himself,
which is a lofty matter,
because regarding contemplation in the intellect of Torah
(and especially a deep intellect)
there is an advantage specifically in solitude,
and if two sit together it disturbs concentrating in the deep reasoning.
Until it is said that22 "Every dispute that is for the sake of Heaven, its end is to endure",
and the reason for the matter is,
because both opinions,
both of Beit Shammai and of Beit Hillel,
are true opinions23.
Another example we find of this, that there must specifically be the matter of multiplicity,
is from the matter that the Almighty told Moshe Rabbeinu24 "Gather for Me seventy men of the elders of Israel etc. and I will take of the spirit that is upon you and place it upon them":
The Almighty did not say that he should bring one elder,
one recipient,
similar to the matter of "and he transmitted it to Yehoshua"25,
rather He commanded to gather specifically "seventy elders";
נאר ער האט געהייסן מקבץ זיין דוקא "שבעים זקנים";
and moreover –
these were not seventy elders from one tribe,
but specifically from all twelve separate tribes!
And the Almighty said "And I will take of the spirit that is upon you and place it upon them",
meaning that just as "Moshe is true and his Torah is true"26,
and "Moshe received Torah from Sinai"25 –
so too regarding the seventy elders from the separate tribes,
that despite the fact that "their opinions are not equal"27 and each one of them is an individual entity –
"These and those are the words of the living God"28,
and all opinions are true.
Along with this, however, the purpose is that there should not be a multiplicity of opinions,
but ultimately one should arrive at one conclusion,
whether through the majority decision,
or through the majority influencing all those assembled in the Sanhedrin,
that they should all see the justice of his reasoning according to the rules of Torah –
whereupon the halachic opinion becomes an opinion of the entire court as one.
And this is the purpose of study,
as the Gemara says29 on the verse30 "A sword upon the boasters and they will become fools",
that when Jews study Torah by themselves,
"alone, alone",
each according to his opinion,
the result is "and they will become fools" –
and there must be a study of several together in a manner of "Et Vahev in Sufah" –
"until they become loving to one another"31.
From this we derive,
that Torah requires both extremes:
both the matter of multiplicity of individuals,
and the matter of the unity of the multitude,
that all should be unified.
From this it is understood also regarding the matter of the farbrengen:
When several people gather together with the resolution that it should be "Then those who fear Hashem spoke, each man to his friend etc."32,
that they should arrive at one resolution,
which should be something enduring and out of true unity –
In this there are both of the aforementioned advantages:
It is a matter of multiplicity of individuals,
because Torah says that "their opinions are not equal etc.",
therefore one can recognize one from another by visual recognition or by voice recognition33 etc.
(as explained in the Gemara34),
but along with this there must be the conclusion in one manner,
similar to how it is by a court.
And from Jews it also comes down into the world –
that Jews bring about unity in the world.
For since the world was created through Torah
(as above),
in a manner of creation yesh me'ayin
(as explained by the Ramban35 that the term "bara" means "yesh me'ayin"),
consequently it means that without Torah the world is "ayin",
therefore it is understood,
that just as the Torah is "Torah achat",
which was given from E-l Echad,
through the am echad –
this is in a manner that one effects the matter of unity also in the world. And as is known the explanation36 on the verse37 "goy echad ba'aretz",
that one draws down "echad" into "aretz",
into worldly matters.
This matter has a special connection to the time in which we find ourselves,
immediately after Rosh Hashanah –
because on Rosh Hashanah for the first time,
the matter of "echad ba'aretz" was revealed,
the drawing down of unity into worldly matters.
And as is known,38
that on Rosh Hashanah,
the day of the creation of man,
Adam Harishon said to all the creations "Bo'u39 nishtachaveh venichra'ah nivrechah lifnei Hashem oseinu",
and as explained in Chassidus,40
that before Adam Harishon came,
the manner of the rule of the Above in the world was in a manner of "malchuto bechol mashalah"41,
a matter of "memshalah" which is also against the will of the one over whom one rules,
i.e., that even if he would conduct himself otherwise,
he must conduct himself according to the rule of the ruler –
which is not a matter of "achdut".
However, Adam Harishon revealed that it should be in a manner of "Melech ga'ut lavash"42,43
a matter of "malchut",
where "umalchuto beratzon kiblu aleihem"44,
malchut is specifically by will;
מלוכה איז ברצון דוקא;
i.e., even among the multitude of creations,
"oseinu" in the plural,
Adam drew down the matter of the kingship of the Holy One, blessed be He –
a matter of unity.
And from this comes the matter also for all time –
that Jews must effect "moloch al ha'olam kulo bichvodecha"45,
in a manner that the world stands in unity.
And as mentioned above,
that both matters,
the matter of multiplicity and the matter of unity,
are not contradictory to each other:
Although Jews were created in a manner that "ein dei'oteihen shavot" etc.,
nevertheless their unification can be not only in a manner of "kulanu ke'echad" with a khaf hadimyon,
but indeed in actual unity,
because a khaf hadimyon of the Torah of truth –
shows that this is a true likeness,
only that due to the concealment and hiding of the world it does not stand in full revelation and with all its force,
and one requires a special avodah so that it should stand revealed in thought, speech, and action.
For although contemplation of an intellectual matter can seemingly be specifically in solitude as above –
but the Torah says,
that at the time of "ish et re'ehu ya'azoru"46,
one reveals together,
through the unity of the many,
more than both can reveal each one by himself.
And as is known the example of this that the Gemara says in Sotah,47
that when two people lift a burden together,
they can lift a burden that is more than twice as heavy as a burden that each of them can lift by himself,
because a special power comes through the combination of both of them together.
And as we see it also regarding the ruling of halachah,
that although at first there is a matter of dispute,
afterwards the halachah becomes clarified,
and after the halachah is decided, all must conduct themselves according to the halachah48
(as the Mishnah49 and Gemara50 say "Amar Rabbi Tarfon,
ani hayiti ba derech vehitei likro kedivrei beit Shammai vesikanti be'atzmi mipnei halistim,
amru lo kedai hayita lechov be'atzmecha she'avarta al divrei beit Hillel").
And this matter is also seen in the avodah of man –
as the well-known saying of the Mitteler Rebbe,51
that when two Jews meet together,
this is two divine souls against one animal soul:
Since "ein adam choteh velo lo"52,
it is therefore understood,
that what the other's animal soul does,
does not concern his animal soul;
איז דעם נה"ב ניט נוגע;
however, regarding the divine soul –
it is "ve'ahavta lere'acha kamocha –
zeh klal gadol baTorah"53,
consequently the divine soul is concerned with how the other divine soul conducts itself –
and therefore there are two divine souls against one animal soul.
And accordingly, it is understood,
that the very gathering together of two Jews,
even when they think that it is for a matter of permission,
is because "I was created to serve my Maker"54,
and moreover –
"I was created only to serve my Maker"
(according to the version brought in the Meleches Shlomo55,
and in various places56),
which means even "after the fact",
as is known the precision of the language regarding the laws of the Omer57 –
is a gathering of two G‑dly souls,
"to serve their Maker",
against one animal soul.
And this is the manner of this gathering together in this farbrengen,
that together with the fact that each one knows that he is an individual and has his own particular opinion –
he comes, however, from the outset with the resolution that it should be the matter of unity –
that all should arrive at one conclusion.
And on the contrary –
through the fact that each one has his own particular opinion,
thereby comes "in a multitude of people is the King's glory"3,
until a new reality of a public is created,
one and singular reality58.
And as the Alter Rebbe explains in Likkutei Torah59,
that every Jew has his particular virtue,
until that although "you are small in your eyes"60 but "you are the head of the tribes of Israel"60 –
until moreover,
that all Jews become one reality,
one body.
In practice:
One sees indeed,
that when gatherings are made and people come with personal appeals
(not for Jews should it be thought),
one cannot know what decisions will come out of it,
because each one is entrenched in his opinion etc.
When, however, each individual comes with the "face" that his opinion is the opinion of the public,
because during the Ten Days of Repentance each individual is considered like a public
(as the Gemara says61),
and the gathering takes place in a house where Torah is magnified and a house where prayer is magnified62 –
which both emphasize unity –
[Torah is –
one Torah;
תורה אחת;
and prayer is primarily the intention of "know before Whom you stand"63,
"should see himself as if he stands before the Shechinah"64,
which is a primary intention in prayer and without it the prayer is void (according to the ruling of the Rambam65).
And as discussed many times regarding what is explained in various places,
that regarding the explanation of the words in prayer it is not absolutely necessary
(except in the first blessing etc.<sup>66</sup>);
(חוץ בברכה ראשונה וכו' 66);
but without the intention of "know before Whom you stand" –
the prayer is void67].
Consequently, one is not impressed by the fact that "their opinions are not equal",
and one arrives at one conclusion.
That is, not only are multiplicity and unity not contradictory to each other,
but on the contrary –
multiplicity in such a manner
(face for the sake of Heaven)
brings unity.
The rationale in this, that multiplicity is not contradictory to unity:
The entire reality of multiplicity of created beings has its source from the simple unity68,
"How great are Your works, Hashem"<sup>69</sup>;
"מה רבו מעשיך הוי'" 69;
and from this it is also drawn down into the earthly kingdom that "in a multitude of people is the King's glory".
That the matter of multiplicity in created beings is not only in the world of separation,
but also among angels,
as it says in the verse70 "a thousand thousands minister to Him and ten thousand times ten thousand stand before Him",
which is an exceedingly great multiplicity in quantity.
[And it is known that the Rambam71 asks,
how can one separate one spiritual reality from another,
separation can only be in the spiritual –
so what is the meaning of a multiplicity of angels in quantity? –
But nevertheless, this is an explicit verse that the angels whose spiritual status and condition is the same are in quantitative multiplicity,
and in immense multiplicity,
until as the Gemara72 says,
that the aforementioned number in the verse is not at all all the angels, nor even their majority].
And so too regarding souls –
that being a soul that descends below into this lowest world, the soul is nevertheless still literally a part of G‑d above73,
and nevertheless the opinion of this soul is not equal to the opinion of another soul.
That all this indicates the virtue of multiplicity –
and as mentioned above,
that specifically through multiplicity of opinions and pilpul and give-and-take, the matter of a spring that overpowers73 is achieved, and one can extract the depth of wisdom and resolve all doubts and problems that without this toil in give-and-take etc. one would not be able to resolve them.
And in practice:
Whether one understands or does not understand,
it is nevertheless so74 –
that when the nations of the world gather together with ulterior motives,
even if they ultimately come to a decision and agreement,
it is still not certain how it will be in the moment after the last one leaves –
and as we see openly, especially in the most recent period;
און ווי מ'זעט עס בגלוי ובפרט בתקופה הכי אחרונה;
However, when Jews gather together for matters of Judaism
[which is,
as mentioned,
at every gathering of Jews,
whether one wants or does not want,
because their soul is the essence. One can hide it and cover it etc. –
but the reality is not changed thereby] –
then the matter that draws near and unites all souls,
all opinions together, prevails –
consequently, ultimately it becomes "Et Vahev be-Sufah"31,
that all come to one conclusion and decision,
and with the greatest force.
All the above is regarding a gathering of Jews in general. However, there is an additional special quality when one gathers during the Ten Days of Repentance,
for then it is "Seek Hashem when He is found, call upon Him when He is near",
as the Gemara says
(as above, section 10)
that each individual is then considered like a community,
and in a house where one Torah is studied and where one prays to the one God –
it is certainly a sure thing that they will come to one opinion,
and together with this they will also have the merit of the many,
which brings a success incomparably higher than the decision and action of an individual,
as explained at length in the pamphlet "Hitchalzu"75.
And simply:
One gives strength in a holy place and in a great place and at a holy time,
between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur –
that all the good resolutions that one now accepts,
one will fulfill with a whole heart and with joy and with a good heart,
and with completeness,
"your heads, your tribes"76 in their area,
and "your hewer of wood and your drawer of water"76 in their area –
but in both there is the inner point –
"to serve my Master".
This point was revealed on Rosh Hashanah,
through "Make Me king over you"77,
because the King wants to be served. The question arises:
Is there78 any lack in the king's house? –
The answer is,
that the "service" of the King consists in that "they accepted His kingship willingly",
and they extended His kingship throughout the entire world,
"reign over the entire world in Your glory...
and appear in the splendor of the majesty of Your might"45,
until "every formed being shall know that You formed it"45,
that every creature in this lowest world
(as the Arizal explains79,
that "formed being" means in the World of Action)
"shall know" with a strong knowledge80 that "You formed it".
May it be His will,
that it should indeed be "Blessed is he who comes in the name of Hashem; we bless you from the House of Hashem",
May there be the matter of blessing and drawing down
(from the term "hamavrich"80 the vine)81,
may it be drawn down to each one and to all together from the blessing of Hashem in fulfilling the mission of "to serve my Master",
and doing so with completeness,
which is,
as the Rambam says82,
when the body is healthy and whole etc.
(because the body cannot serve the Most High properly when it is hungry or thirsty).
This adds even more to the writing and sealing for a good and sweet year, because "and Your people are all righteous"83,
and the Gemara84 says that there is a book of the righteous where they are inscribed immediately85 for a good life etc.
And since "He declares His words to Jacob, His statutes and judgments to Israel...
the Holy One, blessed be He...
what He does, He tells Israel to do"86,
and the Most High commanded Jews in His Torah to ascend in holiness87 –
He Himself fulfills this matter,
and adds,
both in quantity and in quality and in spirituality,
to all these good things in the revealed and manifest good that He gave at the writing and sealing for good on Rosh Hashanah,
and the addition is day by day,
and in the revealed and manifest good below ten handbreadths,
which adds further to the service of the Ten Days of Repentance,
and the preparation for Yom Kippur,
once a year,
together with once in place –
the Holy of Holies,
and once in soul –
the singular one of the soul.
From the completeness and unity in these three matters of world, year, and soul,
"upon which the three aspects are the foundation of the Sefer Yetzirah"
(as emphasized in many places,
also by the Rebbe Maharash88) –
there comes down into actuality the "world stands"89 and the "world endures"90,
And one has the true peace,
as peace can be during the time of exile,
and especially in the last days of exile,
in the time when "the nations will be clarified and refined"91 –
nevertheless, the Almighty is all-powerful and brings about true and revealed peace.
And all this is the immediate preparation for "And I will grant peace in the land"92,
the peace in its perfection,
when the Holy Land will be in its perfection,
and Jews will be in their perfection,
and the Torah will be in its perfection –
then there will be the redemption in its perfection through our righteous Mashiach,
of whom it is said "at the time when King Mashiach is revealed to Israel, he opens only with peace"93,
like the Holy One, blessed be He, whose name is peace93.
And as every Jew concludes his prayers,
both on weekdays,
and even on the holy day,
and all the more so on Rosh Hashanah, the Ten Days of Repentance, and on Shabbats and Festivals –
with the conclusion of all blessings,
"Grant peace".
For "the Holy One, blessed be He, found no vessel that holds blessing for Israel except peace" –
as the Mishnah states at the conclusion of the six orders of the Mishnah –
"as it is said94 'Hashem will give strength to His people, Hashem will bless His people with peace'",
from His full, open, holy, and ample hand95,
And then one holds the blessings of the Holy One, blessed be He, in all details and in all matters,
and especially the inner, essential, and complete blessing –
the true and complete redemption through our righteous Mashiach.
It was spoken several times about what is written in Midrash Tanchuma96 and in Avos d'Rav Nosson97 and also in Tikkunei Zohar98,
the hidden part of the Torah –
[As one always emphasizes and begins with Midrash Tanchuma,
because we are in the last days of exile –
it has a connection to "Tanchuma" which is simply from the term "consolations",
for the true consolations will be at the redemption from this exile,
at the double consolation,
when the verse "I will thank You, Hashem, for You were angry with me"99 will be fulfilled] –
That man is a "small world".
And although this is a "borrowed name",
but since it becomes a "borrowed name" in the Torah of truth,
it is understood,
that the "borrowed name" subsequently becomes a "true name".
And as he enumerates in Adam Yashar Nosach,
that many parts that are in the land are also present in man,
and likewise the reverse –
parts in man that are found in the land.
For this is also the reason for what is written100 "Also the world He has set in their heart",
as the Alter Rebbe explains in Likkutei Torah101
(also brought in a previous farbrengen102),
that this means,
that all matters of the world are dependent on the heart of man –
that is,
ד.ה.,
that when a Jew conducts himself as he should,
not only does he become a master over that part of the world that is connected to him
(and likewise regarding the court –
with the part that is connected to the court103),
but he affects the entire world.
And this is also hinted at in the verse104 "Give ear, O heavens, and I will speak; and let the earth hear the words of my mouth" –
which means105
(as explained in ethical works etc.),
that when a Jew
(every Jew)
"speaks" and transmits the Torah of Moshe,
then "give ear, O heavens, and let the earth hear" –
the heavens and the earth listen to his words!
And not only do they remain listening,
but they conduct themselves according to what they hear!
And according to the simple interpretation,
that the listening and hearing of the heavens and earth was as a "testimony"106,
as it says earlier107 "I call heaven and earth to witness against them" –
that the conduct of a Jew affects the heavens and earth:
they have no choice,
rather everything that comes from them
(the fruit of the heavens and the fruit of the earth)
is dependent on the choice of a Jew,
"and you shall choose life".
Consequently, it is understood,
that when a Jew speaks and transmits the Torah of Moshe,
it affects the conduct of the heavens and earth.
Regarding our matter:
Since we see that in the world in general there are these two matters,
which are opposites,
seemingly,
"singular language" and "plural language",
and in the same occurrence –
one must say,
since man is a "small world",
that this is reflected in the private life of every person. And especially among Jews,
"you are called man" after the manner of "earth to the upper one",
it is certainly that there is this reflection both of the matter of the simple unity above,
and of the matter of "how great are Your works, Hashem",
and in the language of the Midrash108 "Just as the Holy One, blessed be He, creates worlds, so too your father
(Yaakov)
creates worlds"
(with all the explanations that have been explained elsewhere,
and this is not the place to repeat them).
One indeed sees,
that in the private life of every person as an individual,
one also finds both of the aforementioned matters in a prominent manner,
and in a manner of apparent contradiction.
Where is this evident?
When it comes to a person's conduct with himself,
there can be mixed into this many considerations, reasons, and causes why he should spare himself and be satisfied with little and with limitation, etc.,
which shows that in this, the entire person is not expressed;
וואס דאס ווייזט אז אין דעם גיט זיך ניט ארויס דער גאנצער מענטש;
but when it comes to children,
one simply sees in every person
(who is worthy of the title "person")
that he wants the best for his children,
and does not spare any trouble for his children,
even to the point of mesirus nefesh.
And this is not only regarding matters that are impossible without it,
matters that are necessary for the child,
but this is also so regarding the ultimate perfection for the child,
both in physicality and in spirituality.
From this it is understood,
that in a person's relationship to his children,
the essence of the person is expressed.
And one sees,
that in the education of a child, it is evident how one implants in him two opposites:
On one hand, the matter of education is connected with a movement of "lo sehaleif" (it shall not be exchanged),
unity and strength;
אחדות ותוקף;
and on the other hand,
the manner of education is in a direction of "shinui" (change) and "ma'alin bakodesh" (ascending in holiness).
And in more detail:
First of all, one gives the child foundations in which no change is possible:
In whatever time or place he may be –
one gives him foundations in his life,
the matter of justice and uprightness,
and regarding Jews –
the faith in the One God and in His Torah and His commandments,
the faith in the Thirteen Principles,
in a manner that "this Torah shall not be exchanged" 108.
And one implants it in the child in a manner of mesirus nefesh,
that he must give up his life for the Torah,
because it is "our life and the length of our days" 109,
and there is nothing that can override his life! Consequently he understands,
that although he indeed wants other things and has desires and wishes, etc.,
nevertheless, first and foremost comes his life.
These foundations that one gives the child are solid foundations,
firm foundations,
from which one may not budge. And one does this both at the beginning of the period of education and at the end of the period of education, etc.
The point of this direction in education is –
that there is a matter in which there can in no way be any change,
regardless of one's own desires or one's own benefits that could come about through a change.
Along with this, there is in the matter of education an opposite matter:
During education, one constantly tells the child,
that he must constantly grow!
And if he wants a proof for the matter –
one brings him a proof from the fact that his body grows,
from which it is a proof a fortiori that his inner content,
his character traits and intellect,
must also grow.
Heaven forbid to allow the child that his education should stop!
Even when one sees that his education stops on a day when he has reached his perfection – still,
when the next day comes, one tells him that he must continue going to school,
continue sitting and learning.
And one tells him:
Even though you remember everything you have learned until now –
nevertheless, you are a living person,
therefore you must learn more and grow more!
And although one has once influenced him that he should go to school the next day,
one does not stand in one place,
rather one continues in the matter and repeats it day by day.
And as one sees the simple conduct even among simple people,
that every day when the child comes from school and the like,
one immediately asks him:
What did you learn today?
[And in the well-known expression –
what is stated by the Tannaim 110 and Amoraim 111 –
"What novelty was there for you in the study hall today?"],
and one demands from the child that every day he must be changed,
and one tests him and gives him prizes
(if he knows)
or shows him an angry face, etc.
(if he does not fulfill it).
And the manner of education
(if this is only an education that is proper to its name)
continues throughout all the days of a person's life,
in the language of the verse112 "Train a youth according to his way, even when he grows old he will not depart from it,"
meaning that even when he becomes an "elder who has acquired wisdom"113
[as explained in the books114 the precision of the term "has acquired,"
that he becomes a complete master of the wisdom;
אז ער ווערט א פולשטענדיקער בעה"ב אויף דער חכמה;
it is not a matter of partnership or a temporary loan,
but it is his "acquisition")
then also "he will not depart from it,"
and he stands in a movement of "adding"115,
to increase in his study each and every day and each and every moment.
The two movements mentioned –
are two opposite movements in the human soul116:
As we see in the human soul,
that there is a person who is mainly agitated in innovating;
אז ס'איז דא א מענטש וואס קאכט זיך בעיקר אין מחדש זיין;
consequently,
if he has a reasoning from yesterday –
immediately a question falls upon that reasoning:
perhaps it is not sustainable,
and perhaps it can be changed. And in general –
what kind of order is it to hold onto yesterday's reasoning,
one must be a "spring that grows ever stronger"117!
And this is not only something that occurs with him at specific times,
once a month when he is in high spirits and the like –
but by nature he is a "spring that grows ever stronger,"
like a "spring" in its simple sense,
which grows stronger moment by moment. Because this is a trait in the human soul –
whose sense or point is –
that it desires to innovate matters,
and seeks in every thing something new,
to reveal from concealment to revelation or to innovate from its very foundation.
But there is an opposite trait in the human soul –
to preserve what he knows,
and in the language of the Mishnah118 –
"a plastered cistern that does not lose a drop."
Based on what was said above,
regarding the two traits of "a spring that grows ever stronger" and "a plastered cistern that does not lose a drop,"
we can explain another matter:
At the time when the Jews were going into exile,
when then began the situation of "there will be119 no rest for the sole of your foot"120,
as is known121 that because one goes into exile there is a lack of proper concentration in matters of wisdom –
then the receiver of the Torah of that generation –
Rabban Yochanan ben Zakkai –
had to prepare the transition
(passage)
from Yerushalayim to Yavneh
(and as is known122 that they carried him from Yerushalayim etc. with a whole story) –
The Mishnah relates123
(every story in the Mishnah that is in concise language contains much content) –
that he
(Rabban Yochanan ben Zakkai)
divided his students into several types,
and revealed,
that even though one is going into exile
(or because of the very fact that one is going into exile)
one must know that there must be a type of student whose essence is "a plastered cistern that does not lose a drop" and students whose essence is "like a spring that grows ever stronger."
In the time when the Holy Temple existed, there was no need to warn about this;
בזמן שביהמ"ק הי' קיים האט מען עס ניט געדארפט באווארענען;
there was the Holy Temple with the Chamber of Hewn Stone,
and there was rest and tranquility.
But when the time of Rabban Yochanan ben Zakkai came –
the time of preparation for the transition from the state and condition in the study of Torah and
(because study is great for it leads to action124)
in the fulfillment of the commandments and "all your deeds should be for the sake of Heaven"125 and "in all your ways know Him"126 –
to a new state and condition,
Then "Rabban Yochanan ben Zakkai had five students" –
and among them was the one who is "a plastered cistern that does not lose a drop" and the one who is "like a spring that grows ever stronger."
It is a simple matter that also the student of Rabban Yochanan ben Zakkai who was "a plastered cistern that does not lose a drop" undoubtedly also innovated many matters –
he was after all a student of Rabban Yochanan ben Zakkai!
And especially since here we are speaking about Rabbi Eliezer ben Hurkanus,
Rabbi Eliezer the Great,
who although "he never said a thing that he did not hear from his teacher"127,
this is only regarding "said,"
regarding a ruling,
a definitive statement;
אמירה פסוקה;
but it is certain that he innovated matters,
and especially according to what is related about his greatness in Pirkei d'Rabbi Eliezer at its beginning.
Similarly regarding Rabbi Elazar ben Arach,
who was "like a spring that grows ever stronger,"
he certainly was also "a plastered cistern etc."
Why, when one calls him "Rebbe"
(with a yud,
not "Rav")
it is a proof that he had semichah for ruling etc.128,
because to receive semichah one must have simple "knowledge". Even nowadays,
when one receives semichah,
one must have knowledge;
דארף מען האבן ידיעה;
all the more so by the RIB"Z,
it cannot be that he received semichah if he had no knowledge in a manner of "a cistern that does not lose a drop".
But nevertheless his main essence was –
"like a spring that surges forth",
which is why it could happen to him that "I'akar Talmudai –
his Talmud was uprooted and he forgot it"
(as the Gemara says in Shabbos129)
until instead of "HaChodesh HaZeh Lachem"130 he said "HaCharesh Hayah Libam".
Regarding our matter,
we see,
that also in the matter of education there are these two movements of "a cistern that does not lose a drop" and "like a spring that surges forth":
On one hand, one emphasizes to the child and implants in him the feeling that "this Torah shall not be exchanged" and "you shall not add...
and you shall not diminish"<sup>131</sup>;
ולא תגרעו" 131;
and together with this, a main point in education is that one should implant in the same child that he must constantly change himself and constantly grow.
This132 also has a special connection to the present year which is a leap year:
The concept of a leap year is,
to reconcile the course of the sun with the course of the moon133. Because Israel counts by the moon134,
and on the other hand the festivals,
the Festival of Spring and the Festival of Harvest,
are connected with the seasons of the year which are measured according to the course of the sun,
therefore,
when the excess of the solar year over the lunar year accumulates to the value of about a month of days,
they intercalate the year to reconcile the course of the moon and the course of the sun.
What is the difference between the sun and the moon? Both were created "to give light upon the earth"135,
only there is a difference in the manner in which they give light upon the earth:
The136 manner in which the sun gives light –
is without any changes
(in giving light)
from day to day:
The same sun gives light on the first day and on the seventh day and on the fifteenth of the month.
But by the moon it is the opposite:
Every day the
(light)
moon changes
(in giving light),
and there are no two days in which the "giving light upon the earth" of the moon is the same.
And as is related in the reason for the matter in several of our Sages, may their memory be for a blessing137,
that initially it was "And G-d made the two great luminaries" –
"they were created equal"138,
meaning that the moon was like the sun,
but afterwards,
because the moon said a certain matter,
it was "I diminished the moon"139,
so that from then on the moon has no light of its own,
"the moon has no light of itself at all"140,
and it receives all its light from the sun. Therefore,
since all the light of the moon is a reflection of the light of the sun,
it depends on the position and state of the sun relative to the moon relative to the earth. And since both the sun and the moon are constantly in a state of revolution,
they keep turning,
the position of the moon relative to the sun changes,
and consequently there cannot be two moments when the light of the moon is the same.
What emerges from this also in the service of man,
"Also the world He placed in their heart",
that also in man,
in the life of man,
one finds these two movements of "sun" and "moon":
There are matters in which he is without any changes,
and there are matters in which there are changes,
like the light of the moon. And the power for the service in those matters of change comes from the service in matters without change,
similar to how the moon receives its light from the sun.
And as above,
as we see it in the matter of education,
which brings out the essence of man.
The same thing is found also in the study of Torah:
The study of Torah must be in a manner of "to press into it",
which is in a manner of changes,
as one sees simply,
that in order to innovate a new intellect,
a new logical reasoning in Torah,
one must negate the first logical reasoning,
with a "question" or "and it is contradicted" and the like,
until the first logical reasoning becomes completely nullified;
ביז אז די סברא ראשונה ווערט נתבטל לגמרי;
and then he builds a new and superior intellect.
When one wants to arrive at a second rationale that is approximately the first rationale,
then one can build it step upon step;
דעמולט קען מען דאס בויען שלב על גבי שלב;
But when one wants to do the "lafsha lah",
a novelty and addition
(disproportionate),
it comes specifically through nullification of the previous rationale141,
and as the well-known expression in the Gemara "ela amar etc.".
This is analogous to the light of the moon,
which is renewed etc. after it is completely darkened.
However, there are matters in the study of Torah in which there cannot be any changes,
which are the "general principles of study",
and in the language of the Rambam in the Moreh Nevuchim, the "primary intelligibles",
upon which every intellect is built –
which is in a manner of "lo tehei muchlefet",
like the light of the sun.
And here too one sees the concept of how the matters of the light of the moon receive from the light of the sun:
In order for a sage worthy of his name to innovate matters,
specifically through a question etc.,
it must be built upon the aforementioned general principles of wisdom:
On the foundation of this primary intelligible one can ask a question from another place and a contradiction from it and within it,
which then is in a manner of "oker harim" until "tochnanam zeh bazeh"142 in rationale143,
so that they are ground up and cease to exist as a mountain,
because he asks them away,
and he takes the "sand" from the ground up "mountain" and builds a new "mountain".
The explanation of all this in more detail:
It has already been spoken several times regarding the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov144,
that every matter that a person sees or hears is a lesson in his service to his Creator.
This is understood simply,
taking into consideration that every Jew was created "to serve his Creator",
and moreover –
"I was not created except to serve my Creator",
it is understood,
that since every moment of his existence is in order "to serve his Creator",
then when a moment comes and he hears a new report and sees a new sight –
this is certainly through Divine Providence,
so that through it he should fulfill the purpose of his creation –
to serve his Creator.
However, a question arises regarding such a matter as the intercalation of years,
which is not merely a thing that one sees or hears –
rather, it determines all the festivals of the year,
by equalizing the solar year with the lunar year
(as above),
and is an essential matter in the life of a Jew,
and in the life of Torah and mitzvos,
and especially according to what the Rambam145 brings that it is called "sod ha'ibur"146,
and explains,
that "the ways of this calculation became known to some of the sages,
and we have further traditions regarding these fundamentals from the mouths of sages and proofs that were not written down",
and concludes "and it is the secret of intercalation that the great sages knew and would not transmit to every person",
Furthermore:
The matter of the intercalation of the year has an influence on the way of life of every Jew,
even of the simplest of the simple,
when he should celebrate Pesach and Purim147 and down to actual practice regarding eating and drinking etc. –
Therefore the question arises:
Since the matter pertains to actual practice –
from where do we know that we must learn from it an additional lesson?
But the Baal Shem Tov says,
that one must learn from it not only regarding knowing "the deed that they shall do" *147 when it comes to Purim or Pesach,
in Adar and in Nissan,
but also a general lesson that can be learned also in the month of Tishrei.
And on the contrary:
Since the matter has an influence both on the simplest of the simple and on "your heads, your tribes",
it is understood,
that also the general lesson from it is understandable to the simplest of the simple and has relevance also to the greatest of the great.
And what the lesson is –
as explained above at length:
When a Jew has a sense and the like only in one of the two aforementioned movements –
"like a gushing spring" and "a cistern that does not lose a drop" –
he might think that he can suffice with serving Hashem according to his traits –
to this the intercalated year "says":
No! Since "I was created to serve my Creator" and "also the world He placed in their hearts",
he must exert and toil in both lines –
both in the line of "lo tehei muchlefet" and in the line of "lafsha lah".
If he argues that his natural disposition is only in one of the lines –
they tell him:
This is your nature;
דאס איז דיין טבע;
since you were created "to serve his Creator",
you must act in both lines and with a storm and with a fervor,
until self-sacrifice.
He further argues:
But it is a contradiction!
They tell him:
So what? Since you are a Jew,
what is the wonder that a contradiction is demanded of you? It was already shown to you in the desert,
at the time of the building of the Mishkan, the essence of which is the Ark
(according to the explanation of the Ramban 148),
that "the place of the Ark is not within the measurement" 149.
In other words:
Since "And I will dwell in their midst" –
within each and every Jew 150 is dependent and learned from "And I will dwell in their midst" 151 literally,
in the place of the Ark,
every Jew must learn in his service from the manner in which the Ark stood.
And in this Ark there was a contradiction
(as above):
In order to fulfill the command of Hashem, the Ark had to have a specific measure,
because one needed to place in it the Tablets which were "their length six and their width six" 152,
therefore "two and a half cubits its length, etc." <sup>153</sup>;
דערפאר איז "אמתים וחצי ארכו וגו'" 153;
but together with this,
when they measured from the sides
(in the Temple,
and likewise in the Mishkan)
"the place of the Ark is not within the measurement".
These are the two opposites:
On one side there must be a specific measure,
"two and a half cubits, etc.",
in a manner that "it shall not be exchanged". One may not change the measure,
and together with this "the place of the Ark is not within the measurement". That is, not that because it is "not within the measurement",
therefore "the measures are broken" 154,
rather this is a "measure" that is not within the measurement.
And this is a directive to every Jew in whom is the "And I will dwell in their midst",
the indwelling of the Divine Presence:
Every Jew is given the powers,
which he only needs to bring out from concealment to revelation,
from potential to actual,
to act in both lines:
Both in the line of "it shall not be exchanged",
you shall not add nor diminish;
לא תוסיפו ולא תגרעו;
and in the line of "not within the measurement".
And this does not mean that the matters that are "not within the measurement" are in "heavenly" things,
matters that are above,
rather in the very matter that is in measurement and limitation there must be "not within the measurement".
And since he acts in both lines in order "to serve his Creator",
it is understood,
that he does it with self-sacrifice,
as is fitting for "to serve his Creator",
because he has the merit and the empowerment together with the request –
"to serve his Creator".
When one looks at what is happening in the world –
the world can cry out:
It is impossible!
Regarding this, as mentioned,
there is the lesson of the leap year,
which is specifically among Jews:
Among the nations of the world, they either count by the sun,
therefore they do not need to reconcile the course of the sun with the course of the moon;
במילא דארף מען ניט אויסגלייכן דעם מהלך החמה צו מהלך הלבנה;
or they count by the moon –
then their year is not dependent on the seasons of the year,
and each year they are in a different season. Specifically among Jews,
who count both by the moon and by the sun –
the exception of the "leap year" is found,
to reconcile the course of the sun with the course of the moon.
And in this, another matter comes:
Since one must reconcile the course of the sun with the course of the moon,
there is an addition even regarding the solar year:
The number of days of the solar year is 365 days,
and in a leap year,
when there are thirteen months,
there are even more than 365 days!
And likewise this is in the service of man in the matter of education,
that the student becomes not only in a manner of "a cistern that does not lose a drop",
that he knows what the teacher told him,
rather he becomes "like a spring that grows ever stronger",
he innovates even regarding the teacher *.
And the matter in general of the service of man:
When a Jew needs to go out into the world in order to make it a "dwelling place for Him, blessed be He"
("He created it to be inhabited" 155) –
he has two missions in the world:
In the matters of measurement and limitation that exist in the world –
he must bring about,
that there should be a measurement and limitation of holiness:
the four sections of the tefillin,
no less and no more,
and likewise with charity –
it must be in a manner that the "poor person" can receive it,
not "bestow upon them an abundance of good" which "they cannot bear"
(as related in the Gemara 156 regarding the matter of rain that was brought about by Choni HaMe'agel).
And this applies both regarding a "poor person in knowledge" 157,
that the influence to him must be according to his capacity;
אז די השפעה צו אים דארף זיין לפי ערכו;
and also regarding charity in its simple sense:
there are those,
who when a "poor person" comes to them and asks them for a larger sum of money,
say to him:
just as Torah is "its merchandise is better than all merchandise" 158,
so let us sit and study Torah which is much more precious than "silver" 159.
The poor person argues that he needs to have a coin to sustain his sons and the members of his household,
or that he is accustomed to a "horse to ride upon" and a "servant to run before him" 160,
or he is accustomed to aged wine and fatty meat. As explained in the Yerushalmi 161 that there was a dispute whether one must give him from the charity fund and the conclusion was,
that since he is accustomed to the thing, one must give it to him,
because this is "his deficiency which is lacking to him" 162,
so when one answers him about this that instead of this he should study Torah,
explaining a pleasant rationale –
this is "an abundance of good" which "they cannot receive" 156. One must give him money in its simple sense.
And likewise regarding education:
It could be that the "like a spring that surges forth" should be in a manner that he innovates novellae that were not said to Moshe at Sinai 163...
Therefore one must have the foundations in a manner of "a cistern of lime",
and upon the foundations the novellae must be built
("like a spring that surges forth"),
so that he should innovate novellae that were said to Moshe at Sinai,
and so forth.
And regarding practical application,
and in a matter that is time-dependent:
Just as we now stand in the month of Tishrei,
which is a month that is inclusive of the entire year
(as is known the saying of my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe 164),
and "Tishrei" is an acronym for "beginning" 165,
the head of the year,
the head of the year –
one must accept resolutions regarding the service throughout the entire year.
One must accept both resolutions:
since the Creator created us in a measured and limited manner,
one must conduct "his business dealings faithfully" 166,
with measurement and limitation etc.;
במדידה והגבלה וכו';
and together with this the manner of service must be "with all your might" 167 –
beyond measurement and limitation.
And this is not in a manner that one destroys one part of the service because of another part;
און דאס איז ניט אין אן אופן אז מען איז מהרס איין חלק בעבודה צוליב א צווייטן חלק;
rather, just as it is in a leap year –
that one must harmonize both matters,
they should correspond with each other.
What the lesson is learned specifically from the leap year –
this is, however, a lesson for the entire year.
And so too 168 as it is regarding the Exodus from Egypt,
that this is revealed explicitly at a specific time,
on the festival of Pesach "the time of our freedom" –
but together with this it applies every single day,
we mention the Exodus from Egypt every day,
and twice every day.
And this comes in continuation of what was discussed above regarding "Blessed is he who comes in the name of Hashem, we bless you from the House of Hashem":
Together with the fact that it is "we bless you from the House of Hashem" in the plural,
i.e., a matter of plurality where their opinions are equal,
it offers itself from one to another,
which is analogous to the matter of the aforementioned change –
the conclusion must be in a manner of "and Vahev in the storm",
with a true unity,
and true love –
which is a matter of "it shall not be exchanged",
the absence of change.
As it states in the Yerushalmi 169 regarding the matter of truth in general, –
that this is a movement of eternity,
because it passes through,
from the beginning of the letters, aleph,
through the middle of the letters, mem,
until the end of the letters, tav –
and so too it is understood regarding true unity,
that it is without any change. And in more detail,
one sees in the word emet itself both matters:
The word emet indicates,
that both at the beginning of the matter,
at the beginning of a person's life,
and in the middle of his life,
and at its end –
he holds to the same matter. In this itself both matters are emphasized:
he grows from the beginning of his life until its end,
and together with this he holds to the same foundations.
And in particular, together with this, that in the foundations he does not change,
but day by day a new lesson comes to him,
because "Who is wise? One who learns from every person"170,
he learns from every person.
If you encountered a person on the last day of your 120 years and you learned nothing from him,
the Torah says that on that day he is not a wise man,
because "Who is wise? –
One who learns from every person",
and "if he is empty" then it is "from you" *170,
because the Torah says that one can learn "from every person".
And in more detail,
according to the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov
(as above sec. 9)
that since one can –
one must learn a lesson
(not only "from every person" but)
from every thing that one sees or hears –
he learns a new thing each and every day until the last day of the hundred and twenty years of his life.
[Because since the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov became publicized throughout all the diaspora of Israel –
the Rambam rules171,
that any custom that spread throughout all the diaspora of Israel has the force of Torah and Oral Torah,
with all the storm that is in the matter].
And regarding our matter:
Since after Tishrei the matter of education in schools etc. begins in order and with force and regularity
(because in the month of Tishrei there are interruptions because "it is abundant in festivals"172) –
one must learn,
that if there needs to be a correction or completion in the matter of education in the two aforementioned points –
one should do it properly:
A child should know, first of all,
that he stands on a strong foundation,
he is a son of Avraham, Yitzchak, and Yaakov, and she is a daughter of Sarah, Rivkah, Rachel, and Leah,
which are the same Patriarchs and Matriarchs throughout all the days of his life or her life,
and the same Patriarchs and Matriarchs of all Jews throughout all the generations;
און די זעלבע אבות ואמהות פון אלע אידן במשך כל הדורות;
and together with this he must continue to grow.
As above at length.
What is the matter of the aforementioned this,
placing him on a strong foundation, knowing that he is a son of the Patriarchs and a daughter of the Matriarchs.
And in order to effect this in children,
one must tell them this, and conduct oneself according to what one tells them.
A child does not understand tricks;
א קינד פארשטייט ניט קיין קונצן;
if he sees that one tells him one thing and conducts oneself in a different manner –
not only is the matter weakened for him,
but he loses faith in his parents or educators and guides who told him thus!
Even when it appears that they are making a squeeze so that they will have more money to educate and benefit his son and his daughter –
in addition to the main point that this is a wealth that is not "kept for its owner for his benefit"173 because it does not come in the proper way –
What during the Ten Days of Repentance there is no such reality,
every wealth is "for his benefit",
it is merely a matter of trial and temptation of the evil inclination –
In any case "truth will spring forth from the earth"174,
and the child will find out how he received the money!
And one must know that the child watches,
what he sees! Sometimes he says immediately what he sees,
and sometimes he hides it for later,
and sometimes he notices and it is not engraved in him,
but later he will remember from it!
And another thing:
A child does not understand any difference between "light" and "severe".
[What also in this matter of "light and severe" one finds the two opposites aforementioned:
On one hand the Torah says<sup>175</sup> that this is "the lightest of the light" and this is "the most severe of the severe";
פון איין זייט זאגט תורה 175 אז דאס איז "קלה שבקלה" און דאס איז "חמורה שבחמורה";
and on the other hand it states175 "that you should not sit and weigh the commandments of the Torah" –
which both matters stand in the Torah of life,
a lesson in life].
And through the matter of education being proper,
the children influence the entire home,
that it should be proper;
זי זאל זיין כראוי;
What this is connected with the mainstay of the home,
who is "the mainstay of the home"
(as explained in the books on the explanation of "mainstay of the home"),
and as the Gemara176 says "A person brings wheat, chews wheat
(without chewing)",
one needs a "helpmeet opposite him"177.
Therefore, since so many Jews gather together –
and we have the Torah saying of the Mitteler Rebbe that these are many animal souls against one animal soul
(as above section 8) –
Now is the opportune time to accept the appropriate resolutions and with all force.
So that all the changes of the seasons during the coming year –
"seed and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night"178 should have in them the foundation that will never be shaken,
in a manner of "it shall not be exchanged."
And when the conduct is founded on solid foundations –
then it becomes a year whose time
(and whose place)
is "not according to the measure."
And simply put,
that within a short time one succeeds in the study of wisdom in general and the study of Torah in particular with a success that would require a much longer time
(similar to what is explained in Torah Or<sup>179</sup> regarding "a thousand times as much");
(ע"ד המבואר בתו"א 179 בענין "אלף פעמים ככה");
And likewise in the performance of the commandments –
as related in the Yerushalmi,180
that Rebbe Bun bar Chiya accomplished during his short lifetime what another accomplished over a much longer period.
And one has success both in time and in place,
and success with expansion,
both in quantity and in quality,
from the blessing of Hashem.
And it becomes "And this is the blessing with which Moshe blessed"181 –
which is the portion of these days,
which concludes "until the farthest sea,"182
until the last day.183
That from when Moshe Rabbeinu said it until the end of days,
until this day and its morrow,
it is in a manner of "the blessing with which Moshe blessed,"
for "he who has a good eye shall be blessed,184 this is Moshe"
(as the Gemara says in Nedarim185),
and in a manner of "and this is the blessing" –
"showing with his finger and saying 'this'"186,
a blessing of good that is seen and revealed,
including children, life, and ample sustenance,
and in all of them ample,
in physicality,
all the more so how all these matters stand in spirituality.
Since the distinction mentioned earlier is a matter in Torah –
that on one hand, this Torah shall not be exchanged,
and together with this, in Torah there must specifically be ascent in holiness,
the matter of "adding to it" and adding in the beautification of the commandment, etc. –
it is understood that this must also be reflected in all matters of the world,
which are created according to "He looked into the Torah,"
as the saying:187 He looked into the Torah and created the world.
Just as regarding a person as an individual in his private conduct,
and regarding the education of his household,
there exist in this both conducts –
the strong foundations,
and the growth and development, etc. –
so too this applies to "and of the states it shall be said,"188
when speaking about the conduct of an entire state,
for by nature every state is that it should strive to keep growing and becoming stronger or richer, etc. –
there also exist in this the two aforementioned matters that are necessary for the state to be worthy of its name,
in a manner of "He created it to be inhabited,"
and not "for chaos" and the like.
First and foremost, the state must be founded on solid foundations,
beginning with justice and righteousness,
and in general –
the seven commandments of the children of Noach with all their branches, details, and minutiae, from which one may not deviate,
and certainly one may not change.
That is, no matter how much the benefit of the state appears in quantity or quality, etc.,
if for the benefit of the state one must bypass matters of justice and righteousness, etc. –
one knows that from this cannot grow "to be inhabited,"
nor the necessary and true existence,
because it is built on foundations that are not justice and righteousness;
ווייל דאס איז געבויט אויף יסודות וועלכע זיינען ניט קיין צדק ויושר;
foundations that were not confirmed,
and moreover –
not commanded,
by the Creator of the world and its Leader,
the King of kings of kings and the "King over all the earth."
Together with this, a state must have the matter of growth and development,
it must constantly grow and become stronger and richer, etc.
When a state decides that it will remain standing in the same place exactly as it stood yesterday –
this is the opposite of "to be inhabited,"
for "to be inhabited" even regarding a plant consists of there being growth in it,
all the more so in living beings,
all the more so in the speaking species.
The nature of a state must be,
and is,
that it must desire and do what is incumbent upon it to grow and become stronger and richer in spirituality,
and even in physicality.
And these two matters are dependent on each other:
The very fact that the state keeps growing and becoming stronger must always be in a manner of "to be inhabited,"
founded on strong foundations.
The fact that it appears that for the time being one can bypass and deceive the world,
or deceive oneself,
or deceive another,
by doing something not in accordance with justice and righteousness,
not consistent with "to inhabit it,"
with the calculation that tomorrow and the day after, after some time189, one will derive great benefit from it,
and will then be able to do more justice and righteousness –
this is the opposite of the good of the state,
Because "one who says, 'I will sin and then repent' is not given the opportunity to repent"190,
which is not a matter of a decree of the verse,
and not specifically for Jews in particular,
but a matter understood by simple intellect and human intellect:
Since the sin is like a "prosecutor,"
"a prosecutor cannot become a defender"191
(this is how the Supreme One created the world)!
This is one of the reasons brought down192 why "I will sin and repent" does not help.
And from this there is a lesson for those states that consider an additional matter:
Although one time one will be able to deceive,
conceal,
not tell or say the opposite of the truth,
but since after some time one will bring more justice and righteousness so that the workers will have everything they need to have,
with an open hand, etc. –
one may conduct oneself thus
(so they calculate).
One has the aforementioned lesson that the good of the state is,
that it be founded on strong foundations of justice and righteousness so that it be "to inhabit it." But when the state conducts itself contrary to justice and righteousness –
one cannot thereby build a benefit for a person,
whether he is a worker or not a worker!
So too the opposite –
the true existence of the state depends on the state growing and expanding:
Just as with every living thing there is the matter of growth and development,
and it strives to grow and become larger –
so too must a state keep growing.
The citizens of the state cannot confine themselves within the borders of the state and think that one should be for oneself,
and isolate oneself from the world,
and one will grow only alone,
within oneself,
and for oneself.
It is said,
that this is something that does not endure,
and in any case one will not accomplish it. And when one conducts oneself thus,
one can deceive oneself and one deceives oneself at the expense of harming oneself.
In order to have more for oneself, one must give to another. As we see in practice that every state depends on so many states. The difference is only –
one state is more dependent,
and one state less,
but every state needs to reach other states. And in this depends its own growth and development,
and sometimes –
also its existence.
For the Torah established the principles of good and "to inhabit it,"
that one must make the entire world a place where G-dliness is recognized;
אז מ'דארף מאכן פון דער גאנצער וועלט אן אָרט וואו מ'דערקענט ג-טלעכקייט;
"Reign over the entire world in Your glory,"
until in a manner of "and appear."
Therefore,
when one state separates itself from another part of the world and does not want to help them –
it also diminishes in helping itself.
In addition to the main point,
that in any case the state will not accomplish this,
because every state depends on other states,
But what then:
When one state does not help out another part of the world,
the other part of the world becomes –
which it could have helped and given assistance to –
a harm to it! As has also been seen in practice.
True indeed,
there are matters in another part of the world that are outside this state:
that part of the world has not yet reached the capabilities or knowledge or height that the state has already reached,
therefore they do things that they should have done better,
or not done, etc. –
But on the contrary:
This is a reason why the state that is more developed must help out the other states.
And if one needs and can also
(to the help for the other countries)
manage with "the right hand draws near" –
then how good;
איז מה טוב;
if one must come to postponement,
"the left hand pushes away",
distancing,
one must also use this temporarily,
but in a manner that the "push away" is with the left hand,
the weak hand 193.
But when one completely closes oneself off and remains alone for oneself –
first of all, one does not carry this out,
and furthermore:
already on the spot this is a damage for oneself,
as mentioned above.
Therefore,
when a part of the leaders of the country gather together,
and especially a great and mighty country,
and one wants to convince oneself that one needs and should close oneself off for oneself,
and that what is happening on the other side of the world one cannot help anyway and it has no relevance to us,
and why must one crawl with a cold head into hot water etc. –
one has the aforementioned lesson,
that since one has become aware of what is happening on the other side of the world,
every matter is by Divine Providence:
it was not made known to him so that he should lie down to sleep as if he did not see and did not hear etc.,
rather that which he became aware of is by Divine Providence,
this is a sign that he can do something about it. Only he needs to discern whether his country needs to act in this matter in a manner of "the right hand draws near",
or "the right hand draws near" by means of the preface of "the left hand pushes away",
or temporarily only "the left hand pushes away".
And since it is a rule that "I do not ask of them except according to their power" 194 –
one certainly has the powers to carry this out.
That the rule
(that "I do not ask of them except according to your power")
is also not a Scriptural decree,
rather the logic of the Torah compels it,
and to such an extent is this a logical reasoning,
that this is in the language of the Gemara everywhere 195 "Why do I need a verse? It is logical":
the intellect of the Torah established that it became a logical reasoning in human intellect,
therefore it says "verse" –
Torah –
that "Why do I need a verse,
it is logical",
because this is a logical reasoning taken from Torah,
"verse" 195.
The instruction from all this:
The activists who, by Divine Providence, have influence in a government of a city,
or of a neighborhood at least,
or of an entire country –
they must utilize their mission to serve his Master,
even as an individual,
all the more so when they can influence regarding a multitude of individuals,
or influence many cities,
or even entire countries.
And one must establish once and for all the conduct of the country
(or city and neighborhood)
on these two foundations:
First of all, the country must be founded on strong foundations of justice and righteousness and the Seven Noachide Laws.
And one must know that although truly one must occupy oneself with "adorn others" –
first and foremost, however, must be "adorn yourself" 196,
the country must demonstrate a living example of conduct according to justice and righteousness and according to the Seven Noachide Laws,
which one expects,
demands or pressures,
that other countries should fulfill them.
And as discussed earlier regarding educators and teachers and their students:
sometimes an educator thinks,
that just as his student is his charge,
so he
(the student)
is not as clever as he
(the educator) is,
consequently the educator can make a twist or a trick,
and a matter contrary to truth,
and the student will not catch on to it.
Regarding this there is the rule,
that there is an "eye that sees and ear that hears" 197 of the Creator of the world and its Leader,
that the eye that sees and ear that hears of the Leader of the world wants that every person,
also the educator, should conduct himself according to justice and righteousness,
and if he does not conduct himself so, ultimately "truth will spring forth from the earth".
So too regarding individuals who have been placed in a high position and they can lead many individuals or many groups,
and they can lead even wise, understanding, and elderly people,
they may think to themselves that they can twist,
distort, crush, and crumple, etc. –
upon this too there is the principle that there is an "eye that sees and ear that hears",
and He wants that every country –
"of the countries it shall be said" –
(and every group and the like)
should conduct itself as a country ought to conduct itself,
and if one does something improperly,
ultimately "truth will spring forth from the earth" and it will be discovered that one did something improperly.
Even if one spoke secretly,
and hid "in concealment and I will not see it"198 –
but ultimately it comes out,
and then it causes more harm than if one had not hidden it, and one would have immediately admitted the truth.
And that which certain people were given the highest position is
(not in order to be able to twist someone, Heaven forbid, but)
in order that they should have greater powers to accomplish greater things and to overcome more difficult matters and problems,
even though temporarily an easier way presents itself to extricate oneself from it.
This is the first foundation upon which a country must be established –
that first and foremost it is built upon strong foundations of justice and integrity,
which shall not be altered.
Notwithstanding all calculations that it may turn out that the country will have a profit from something that is not in accordance with justice and integrity –
one never bypasses the foundations of justice and integrity,
knowing that all those calculations are only a calculation for a time no longer than a short time,
but ultimately the truth will be revealed.
And then comes the second thing upon which a country must be built:
One must continually grow and become richer and stronger, etc.
But even this growth must be built upon the foundations and the aforementioned principles of justice and integrity,
which are in a manner of "shall not be altered." And when the foundations are according to justice and integrity,
then one grows as one should grow and good fruits grow, and not the opposite, Heaven forbid.
As mentioned above,
that just as it is in Torah that everything is built upon a strong foundation that shall not be altered,
then "He looked into the Torah and created the world" –
so too it is in the world,
that a country is built upon strong foundations that shall not be altered,
As is seen in practice:
It is a custom of every important country,
that together with the laws that are made from time to time,
which serve and address the matters in the country that are dependent on time or place –
they also have a written book of laws,
or as it is called in the language of the country –
a "Constitution",
which is in a manner of "shall not be changed"
(unless there is a change such that the nation itself has changed. Consequently, it also needs laws that are suitable according to its new status and situation. But the strong foundations are not changed).
The aforementioned –
that in addition to a country needing to be built upon strong foundations,
it must also have a connection and influence upon other countries
(and not lock itself in) –
also follows in continuation of what was discussed several times,
that it is an absolute necessity that this country
(the United States)
take a much more active part in the effort to release those who wish to leave that country.
Of course, the effort in this must be in a manner that it will not harm the goal,
but rather will be beneficial to it. Therefore, the way to do this is not by insulting the other and provoking him, etc.,
but rather to do it quietly, softly, and behind the curtain,
and together with this –
with appropriate force,
which then will certainly succeed199.
Even if "your beginning will be small",
it will, however, open the way so that afterwards "your end will greatly increase",
and it can even be "greatly increase exceedingly"
(in the language of the verse200).
The above-mentioned regarding the command of this strong foundation of knowing that there is an "Eye that sees and Ear that hears",
is like the matter is in the area of an entire country,
and among the leaders of the country,
so is this also in the area of every individual.
As mentioned many times that it is an essential matter that one should instill in the elementary schools,
that one should speak and tell,
or at least think about the Above,
through that the first beginning of the school day should be with a moment of silence,
And it is not the simple meaning that the student must immediately be silent and not think at all,
rather since this is a moment,
and a moment in a school,
he must certainly immediately think and do something,
the student should ask his father and mother,
or grandfather and grandmother,
about what he should immediately think.
And the school must not interfere in this. For just as one must reckon with the situation and condition as it is in the present,
so if one will leave the manner that the child should remind himself of the "Eye that sees and Ear that hears" according to the choice or desire of the "principal",
or teacher of the class,
one cannot know whom one will encounter,
and even one child,
one person,
is also a "full world". Therefore this must be given over specifically to the parents to explain to the child about the "Eye that sees and Ear that hears".
And through this one will prepare every child –
a Jew,
or from the seventy nations –
and he will know,
that even before he learns anything at all,
even before he reviews what was learned on the previous day,
the beginning of his day begins with that sixty seconds at least,
or two,
three minutes,
he has thought over what his father or mother told him –
that there is an "Eye that sees and Ear that hears".
And at that moment his learning during the day proceeds with righteousness and integrity:
Even though his teacher or guide look to the side,
he will not deceive them,
because he knows that the Above is an "Eye that sees and Ear that hears" and from Him he cannot hide.
And then he will also have more success in his studies,
all the more so that he will not do matters of falsehood
(opposite of truth)
in his studies and in the examinations and the like.
There are those who have convinced themselves that this is a matter that pertains only to children!
One must know that this pertains to their parents,
and to the administration of the schools,
and to those who stand at their head:
Those who stand at the head think that one need not replace them. For they have already studied through so many and so many years and succeeded,
and the proof is that they occupy such and such a position –
One says –
"Do not trust yourself until the day etc.",
until the last day:
One finds oneself in a great world,
which the world has been given to every person –
"He has set the world in their heart" –
to make it in the manner of "to inhabit it",
and moreover –
"a garden for My delight",
a matter of a garden and a pleasurable stroll;
אן ענין של גן וטיול של תענוג;
or the world can be exactly the opposite, G-d forbid.
And upon whom does it depend? Upon the person who is in the world in general,
and in particular those who stand at the head,
that they should do all that is dependent on them to ensure that every child should know that there is an "Eye that sees and Ear that hears".
To explain in practice to the child the matter of "Eye that sees and Ear that hears",
one must rely on the parents
(as above);
(כנ"ל);
their role and responsibility of the school administration and those who stand at their head,
up to the very highest,
is –
איז –
to compel that in a school every day should begin with a moment of silence in order that one can think about the "Eye that sees and Ear that hears".
That this will help bring about that the children who are raised in this school should go in the path of righteousness and integrity.
That this is indeed the role of a school. Not like others who mistakenly think that the role of a school is,
that the child should accumulate there as many and as many pieces of knowledge,
this is only a preparation;
דאס איז נאר א הכנה;
the role of a school is,
that it should be a house of education,
there one should educate the male student or female student,
that he should be an upright person. And then he will utilize the knowledge which he receives there
(which also the knowledge he needs to have)
in a manner of "they are wise to do good":
The school indeed makes the male students and female students into wise ones,
but along with this it must also ensure that they should be "wise to do good",
and this is the main thing.
And if the one who occupies the post to influence the education of children thinks that he indeed occupies the post but this matter another can do,
and he is not capable etc. –
one tells him:
This is a matter of danger to life,
because also in this depends whether there will grow a soul of a person,
or it could be that there will grow such a one who will not be a life-giver to souls,
but the opposite of the matter, heaven forbid!
Thereby one sees how also in the education of a child both aforementioned points must be:
When the child goes to a school of whatever kind,
one must first and foremost have the foundation of every education –
that there is an "eye that sees and ear that hears". That the foundation of every education is not a matter that goes and grows or goes and changes,
but it is a constant thing,
which must not be changed,
that there is an "eye that sees and ear that hears" constantly.
With him there is the constant feeling,
that even "if a person hides in a hiding place",
is it possible that "I will not see him" –
there is indeed constantly an "eye that sees and ear that hears".
Together with this there is also the point in education,
that one must teach a child that he must constantly grow and ascend higher and higher.
That thereby one sees the two main points as they are in the area of education of every individual,
as they are also in the area of the state,
and in the area of the family etc.
Here is the place also to mention regarding the matters that "the time caused":
Everyone should endeavor to do everything to provide for all Jews their needs during the month *203,
That is, all Jews who are in his neighborhood that it could be that they lack something entirely,
and especially regarding the meals of the eve of Yom Kippur
(when there needs to be eating and drinking as on two days,
according to the custom of Israel), and
(all the more so regarding)
the meals of the conclusion of Yom Kippur,
the meals of the time of our rejoicing etc.;
סעודות פון זמן שמחתנו וכו';
and also regarding the preparations for the time of our rejoicing,
that there must be "the little ones he gives them parched grain and nuts and the women he buys them garments and jewelry",
and also regarding the four species etc. –
Is that since there remain only a few hours until the eve of Yom Kippur,
one should do everything one can to provide Jews with all their needs,
and even if it is a doubt in the matter
(whether that one needs to have it),
one must also do it.
That also in this "campaign" there are the two aforementioned movements –
the matter of permanence and absence of change,
and the matter of change and elevation in holiness:
On one side one must put into this with full force as in previous years,
because "this Torah shall not be replaced";
ווארום "זאת התורה לא תהי' מוחלפת";
but on the other hand,
it is not enough to measure oneself according to the capacity in past years,
rather one must elevate in holiness,
in a manner of "they have no rest".
In continuation of the above,
one will also make a conclusion on several tractates,
in accordance with the content of the leap year,
sun and moon,
permanence and changes:
We find in the conclusion of two tractates,
"Moed Katan" and "Tamid",
two statements which are seemingly contradictory to each other:
The conclusion of tractate "Moed Katan"
(which has a connection to the matter of yahrtzeit in general,
more than other tractates)
is "Torah scholars have no rest even in the World to Come".
That is, here is emphasized the virtue of not staying in one place,
the absence of rest.
When one looks at what is written at the conclusion of Tractate Tamid –
one sees that there precisely the opposite is emphasized:
"On Shabbat they would say 'A psalm, a song for the Shabbat day,'
for a day that is entirely Shabbat and rest for the life of the worlds." One sees here,
that the ultimate level is the matter of rest,
and a perpetual rest,
for the life of the worlds!
On this contradiction, the Maharsha at the end of Tractate Berachot raises a question,
where it also brings the statement of Chazal "Torah scholars have no rest neither in this world nor in the World to Come, as it is said 'They go from strength to strength, each appears before G-d in Zion'" –
so apparently it is not understood:
At the conclusion of Tractate Tamid it implies,
that in the World to Come the ultimate perfection will be the "day that is entirely Shabbat and rest for the life of the worlds",
and here
און דא
(end of Berachot)
it implies,
that the ultimate elevation in the future is that "they go from strength to strength, each appears before G-d in Zion",
"they have no rest"?
And he answers that here it speaks about different types of rest:
The matter of "a day that is entirely Shabbat and rest" means a rest similar to that of Shabbat in its simple sense,
a rest from weekday labors;
א מנוחה פון עובדין דחול;
however, that which "they have no rest" means in matters of Torah and mitzvot.
But the explanation of the Maharsha is apparently not understood:
According to the Maharsha it turns out,
that the entire elevation of "a day that is entirely Shabbat and rest",
i.e., of the rest in the future,
will consist only in that one will not need to be occupied with plowing and sowing etc., but only with the study of Torah.
And apparently,
this is a matter that already existed before the "day that is entirely Shabbat",
before the seventh millennium,
because we find that in the time of the First Temple,
when Jews were "doing the will of the Omnipresent"
(most of the time or part of the time),
it was "and strangers will stand and shepherd your flocks, and foreigners will be your plowmen and vinedressers" –
and Jews were occupied with the study of Torah;
און אידן האבן זיך פארנומען מיט עסק התורה;
and moreover –
even during the time of exile there were "Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai and his colleagues" who "acted like Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai and it succeeded in their hand",
they were occupied only with the study of Torah.
It is not understood,
how can one say,
that merely in order to have rest from mundane actions,
for this one needs the seventh millennium?!
[In general, one should not "bother" with the Maharsha,
and especially according to what is brought in the books,
that all the authors up to the Maharsha wrote their works with Ruach HaKodesh (similar to what is stated in the continuation of Tishrei regarding the Taz and the Shach),
which means "and so on",
including the Maharsha himself. And especially knowing that the work of the Maharsha (also his Chiddushei Aggadot) was disseminated and accepted throughout all the dispersions of Israel. But nevertheless it is understood,
that one should not rely on that which is written in the Maharsha,
that because it is written there,
therefore one need not understand it. Rather, one must certainly also understand what is written in the Maharsha].
This rationale will be understood by prefacing,
that also in the matter of a yahrtzeit one finds these two mentioned matters
(of sun and moon)
which are apparently a thing and its opposite:
The entire content of "yahrtzeit" comes as a result of the belief in the eternity of the soul. When one observes a yahrtzeit,
one studies Torah and gives charity and recites special prayers for the merit of the soul –
the question arises:
The soul has already left the world a year ago or several years ago? But the answer to this is,
that the soul is in the World of Truth,
it is a reality of truth,
an eternal reality.
[And as discussed several times, this is a matter that one does not even need to come to faith for,
because it has no place in human intellect to say,
that because there is a deficiency in the body,
there should thereby be a deficiency in the soul!
One who does not believe at all, G-d forbid,
in the existence of the soul,
is "are we dealing with judges?",
we are speaking about normal people...
So since one believes that there is a soul,
even though one cannot touch it etc.,
and it animates the body –
one understands,
that the soul is stronger than the body,
and it does not need to attain the details that a body needs to attain. The body is a physical reality of flesh and blood and bones –
therefore it needs to attain physical eating and drinking;
במילא דארף ער אנקומען צו אכילה ושתי' גשמית;
not so regarding the soul which is a spiritual reality,
there is no place in reason to say that it needs to attain physical eating and drinking. The matter of connecting physical and spiritual is only through the power of the One who does wondrously –
as it states in the Rema.
So since the connection of body and soul is also bound with the body,
therefore,
in order for the connection to be in its strength and its existence,
one needs to attain physical eating and drinking.
But to say that when there is a lack in the perfection of the body there is a lack in the vitality of the soul itself –
this is contrary to human intellect.
In other words:
the connection between the soul and the body is not an eternal connection,
but the soul itself is an eternal reality,
and that it was in the body does not change it.
From this it is understood,
that the matter of yahrtzeit comes to bring out the matter of the spirituality and eternity that is in the soul,
that which "it is not exchanged".
Together with this, however, in the matter of yahrtzeit the very opposite is emphasized:
In connection with the custom of reciting Kaddish on the day of yahrtzeit,
"Magnified and sanctified be His great name",
which means,
that there should be an addition and an increase –
it is explained in Kabbalah the reason for the matter,
because on the day of yahrtzeit the soul ascends to a higher world,
and every ascent from world to world is connected with the recitation of Kaddish,
as explained there the reasons for the matter,
and simply –
because every ascent of the soul is connected with a matter of the sanctification of the Name,
"and His great name be sanctified".
In any case we see,
that the matter of yahrtzeit its content is –
the change and ascent that is accomplished in the soul.
Which is a matter opposite to the first matter mentioned above,
that in the matter of yahrtzeit specifically eternity is expressed
(and the absence of change)
of the soul.
And the same matter is found in the text of the Kaddish itself:
It speaks about "His great name",
about the eternal reality of "His great name";
וועגן דער מציאות נצחית פון "שמי' רבא";
and together with this there must be a magnification and sanctification in "His great name".
So since "He looked into the Torah and created the world" –
we find these same two matters in Torah
(as above):
There are matters in Torah in which there is "it shall not be exchanged",
as this is in the Written Torah,
that one may not add to it a single letter or stroke or crown etc.;
אז מען טאר אין איר ניט מוסיף זיין קיין איין אות אדער קו אדער תג וכו';
and on the other hand there is the obligation of "magnify the Torah and make it glorious",
both magnify in quantity and magnify in quality.
With this one can also explain a perplexing Gemara:
The Gemara says in Shabbat,
in the section about the Giving of the Torah,
that "When Moses ascended on high
[at the Giving of the Torah]...
He said to him
[the Holy One, blessed be He] Moses,
Is there no peace in your city?
[Is it not the way to offer greetings in your place?
(Rashi)],
He said before Him, Is there a slave who offers greetings to his master?
He said to him, You should have helped Me,
Immediately he said to Him, And now, please, let the power of the Lord be great, as You have spoken." Superficially:
What is the logic in the exchange between Moses and the Almighty?
And according to the above it can be said:
When Moses ascended on high,
to the place which is an eternal world,
and stood
(as it were)
before the Almighty,
in a manner of "rest for eternal life",
he thought,
that here the matter of ascent etc. is no longer applicable.
Upon this, however, the Almighty argued with him that a higher thing must come,
a matter of connecting two opposites which is accomplished through the matter of peace –
"Is there no peace in your city?",
that Moses –
born of woman –
should draw down peace from "your city"
(below in this world)
also above, as it were.
With this is also understood the connection of the matter of "And now, please, let the power of the Lord be great" with "peace". Superficially,
since the Almighty said "Is there no peace in your city?",
Moses should have said a matter of "peace",
and in "And now, please, let the power of the Lord be great",
the matter of peace is not stated,
and similarly in the formulation of "Peace be upon you, my master and teacher" the matter of "magnification" of the power of the master etc. is not found.
Only the explanation of this is according to what was said –
that the concept,
that a mortal should bring about an elevation above,
"service is a need of the Most High,"
until also in an eternal matter an enlargement should be brought about,
this is brought about through the concept of peace which connects two opposites.
Regarding our matter –
the conclusion of the tractates –
the explanation of this is:
The conclusion of each tractate is in continuation and in accordance with the content of the tractate,
and therefore the conclusion of tractate Moed Katan is with "they have no rest" and the conclusion of "Tamid" is with "for a day that is entirely Shabbat and rest."
Both concepts –
"they have no rest" and "for a day that is entirely Shabbat and rest" –
are such concepts that are found in the service of man,
as was discussed at length,
that this is reflected in several matters in the service of man. Only in each tractate is brought out the concept that has a connection and continuation to the tractate:
The concept of the conclusion of Moed Katan in general speaks about matters of "and the living shall take it to heart,"
matters that come as a result of an undesirable thing. And in the service of man it means:
when the Most High places a person into a state of trial,
a state that appears
(at first glance)
as an undesirable state,
and a person must overcome it.
And this is also hinted at in the name of the tractate –
"Moed Katan."
That is, this is a small time,
a time of smallness,
which one must overcome and make it into a "Moed" etc.
But the concept of tractate Tamid is –
the opposite,
and as its name by which it is called in the Holy Tongue "Tamid,"
which indicates that it speaks about a matter of constant service in which there is no change.
And as the simple understanding of the matter,
that the matters of the additional offerings etc. in the Holy Temple are discussed mainly in tractates Zevachim and Menachot etc.;
אז די עניני עבודת המוספים וכו' שבביהמ"ק ווערן ארומגערעדט בעיקר אין מס' זבחים ומנחות וכו';
but in Tamid it speaks about the constant services that were performed each and every day,
and the beginning of the tractate is about the laws of the daily offering,
which is also called "Tamid" because of the constancy in it.
And therefore the conclusion of tractate Moed Katan,
where the service of man of transforming undesirable matters is found –
is with "they have no rest,"
a movement of change etc.;
א תנועה פון שינוי וכו';
in contrast, the conclusion of "Tamid,"
of constant service,
is with –
"for a day that is entirely Shabbat and rest."
And the concept in the service of man:
There is the concept of service of constancy,
in which no changes are applicable,
it is an eternal matter,
because this is a matter that is connected with true eternity,
with the eternity of the Most High,
of Whom it is said "You are He, and Your years do not end,"
that is, that even a place that is connected with "Your years" is also "do not end."
And such a manner in the service of man –
brings to the reward of "for a day that is entirely Shabbat and rest for the life of the worlds,"
a true and eternal rest.
But the concept of rest itself emphasizes that there also exists the manner of service of "they have no rest,"
because a thing that is not subject to toil and exertion,
the description of "rest" does not apply to it. For example,
if one says about a stone that it has rest,
because it does not grow and does not walk and does not run but lies motionless –
no one would say this. Because a stone is not at all in the category of rest. It is not in the category of toil,
consequently it is also not in the category of rest.
In contrast, when one says "rest" it is emphasized that here it speaks about one who is in the category of toil and exertion.
And this is the service of "they have no rest,"
that a Jew must also act in a manner of exertion etc.
And this is expressed specifically in the tractates of the entire Talmud –
because that which a Jew is obligated to learn all the tractates of the entire Talmud
(as the Alter Rebbe says in Hilchot Talmud Torah),
it means
(in the service of man)
that all services must be present:
First and foremost, there is within him the constant service,
just as in the Holy Temple literally,
where the service of the day began with the daily offering,
a constant and eternal service in the manner of "this Torah shall not be replaced" –
and the reward for this is "for a day that is entirely Shabbat and rest for the life of the worlds."
Afterwards one says a Jew,
that there must also be the concept of "Musafim",
addition,
a concept of "Yigdal Na",
"to make the Torah great and glorious",
which is expressed primarily in the festivals,
"Israel sanctified the times" –
And this is the concept of "Moed Katan",
and a concept of smallness,
which requires a special effort to transform the undesirable concept and make from it a "Moed".
And therefore the reward for this is –
"they have no rest",
a concept of the complete absence of rest,
like the reality of time,
the Moed,
in which at every moment the time changes,
because its reality is from "past present future",
consequently it cannot stand in one place even for a moment:
when a moment passes,
the previous moment becomes "past" and the current moment "present" etc.
Which these two concepts are as discussed above regarding "a spring that grows stronger" and "a cistern of lime that does not lose a drop",
that each one has from the other,
but it depends on what is the main thing.
Along with this comes another tractate where it discusses both concepts together –
the first tractate of the Talmud,
tractate Berachot:
In the conclusion of Berachot it also brings –
as above –
the statement "Torah scholars have no rest etc.",
but afterwards it says "Torah scholars increase peace in the world",
for the concept of peace is also a concept of rest etc.
And the explanation of this is also as mentioned above –
that this is in accordance with the content of the tractate,
and since it is the first tractate,
it includes both concepts:
The name of the tractate is "Berachot" –
plural form. The concept of a blessing is –
blessing and drawing down. And there are two modes of blessing and drawing down
(as explained in Chassidus):
blessing and drawing down from the source and root of the one being blessed,
and in the language of the verse "each man according to his blessing he blessed them",
and a blessing like the Priestly Blessing,
which draws down from above the root and source
(as per the concept of "Yehi Ratzon",
that one draws down a new will above),
and as explained at length particularly in the discourses of our Rebbe the Maharash.
Accordingly, the content of tractate Berachot contains both concepts:
The beginning of tractate Berachot is –
the commandment of Kriat Shema,
"from when may one recite the Shema",
which is an eternal concept for Jews,
as it says in Sefer HaChinuch that "and you shall love the Lord your God" is a constant commandment;
ווי עס שטייט אין ספר החינוך 230 אז "ואהבת את ה"א" 231 איז א מצוה תמידית;
and the continuation of the tractate is about blessings over enjoyments etc.,
in which there are variations from blessing to blessing,
fruit of the tree and other fruits etc. etc.
And therefore this is also emphasized in the conclusion of the tractate –
which contains both concepts:
the concept of "they have no rest",
together with "increase peace in the world",
for the concept of peace is
(as above)
the connection of two opposites,
i.e., the connection of eternity with time,
the connection of rest with the absence of rest.
According to this, one will also understand the connection of the conclusion of tractate Berachot –
the first tractate of the Talmud –
with the conclusion of the Talmud:
When one learns about the concept of peace,
which means the connection of two opposites,
the question seemingly arises:
How can one hold two opposites together? Granted, that which "the place of the Ark is not from the measurement" discusses specifically the Ark,
which was in the Holy of Holies, it does not apply even to other vessels in the Temple –
so how can Jews in their service include both opposites together?
To this the Mishnah at the end of the Talmud answers,
that this is indeed a concept that the Almighty specifically does for a Jew,
and the Jew on his own cannot attain to this:
"The Holy One, blessed be He, found no vessel that holds blessing for Israel except peace, as it is said: The Lord will give strength to His people, the Lord will bless His people with peace."
I.e., here it does not discuss a blessing from the source and root of the one being blessed,
but rather the blessing of the Holy One, blessed be He
("the Lord will bless etc."),
and for this the Almighty created a vessel to hold His blessing.
How can there be a vessel for the infinite? –
It is because the Almighty is "the one who prevents the impossible".
What is, however, the explanation for this in intellect?
Regarding this, the Mishnah says, "The Holy One, blessed be He, did not find, etc.,"
that this is a matter of "finding." A matter that is placed in the intellect does not require toiling to find it,
only through intellectual effort. Here, however, it is about a unique matter,
a matter for which one must have a "finding."
And the explanation of this:
The Supreme One,
created the world in a manner of "the statutes of heaven and earth" which "shall not cease"
(a statute I have enacted from the Supreme One).
Consequently, the world
(according to its limitations by the Holy One, blessed be He)
apparently does not have any thing that can contain an infinite
(blessing of the Holy One, blessed be He).
Therefore, the Supreme One needed, so to speak, to begin "seeking" such a "vessel,"
That is, it is analogous to "adding strength to the power above,"
as Moses said, "And now, let the power of my Lord be magnified,"
and he brought down peace above
(as mentioned above),
And "the Holy One, blessed be He, did not find a vessel that holds blessing for Israel except"
In the world there is no such reality,
except for one thing:
The matter of peace
which the Holy One, blessed be He, gives as a "vessel" to the Jewish people,
for although it is indeed a good and great vessel,
it must, however, be "bestow upon them abundant goodness" in a manner that "they are able to receive"
It is said that "God will give strength to His people,"
The Supreme One gives the Jewish people the power to receive the "vessel,"
and the power of the Holy One, blessed be He, descends in "God will bless His people with peace."
And with this power and "vessel" of the Holy One, blessed be He, that the Jewish people have
they can accomplish in their service the union of opposites,
because this is given to you, a "vessel" from the Supreme One!
And from the point that was taken from the first tractate of the entire Talmud and from the conclusion of the entire Talmud
the explanation was derived in general regarding these matters in all of man's service,
how they can both be together. Because this is in the power of the Holy One, blessed be He,
who "gives strength to His people."
From this emerges in the entirety of the Torah,
that together with that which "it shall not be exchanged" there is in it the matter of "and maidens without number,"
the absence of rest.
And from this emerges in the service of man each day
that the service begins with a constant thing,
the service of "I give thanks before You,"
which is equal every single day and for every single person without exception
for "King" is an eternal matter and the service of "thanksgiving" is an eternal service.
And together with this one does this before washing the hands
which is a matter of connecting two opposites.
And from this emerges afterwards in the particular service of each day,
whether it is a weekday or a day when one says in prayer "the heavens declare the glory of God,"
a day of the Sabbath prayer,
Rosh Hashanah or Yom Kippur,
for each day performs its own function *239.
And this is so in the service of every individual among Israel,
in his private life each and every day,
that he acts in both lines "to serve his Master,"
and consequently the service is in both lines in a manner of self-sacrifice,
without measure and limitation,
and together with this, since "in the light of the King's face is life,"
he has in both matters success beyond measure and limitation,
both in the matter of "the place of the Ark"
(eternity)
and in the matter of "it is not from the measure"
("they have no rest").
This has,
as mentioned,
a special connection also to this day,
a yahrzeit,
which also brings out the two aforementioned lines.
And one could elaborate on all this
but since tomorrow is "each day performs its own function,"
we will now conclude.
And the order will be,
as every year,
that in addition to the matter of prayer and Torah that has been until now,
and especially the evening prayer,
which is the prayer of Jacob,
whose essence is an inheritance without borders,
and it is a voluntary prayer that "nowadays they have established it as an obligation,"
that is, a prayer that expresses the transformation of voluntary matters to "for the sake of Heaven."
And the matters in Torah
the conclusion, etc., and verses from the Written Torah and from our Sages of blessed memory from the Oral Torah
we will now give charity,
by conducting the regular collection for "Keren Hannah."
The purpose of "Keren Hannah" is,
to help regarding the education of Jewish daughters in particular and proper education in general.
The connection to "Hannah" is understood,
because all Hannahs are called,
generation after generation,
after the first Hannah
for with the first "Hannah" one sees how she occupied herself with the matter of education.
First of all,
she was not satisfied with anything,
and wanted to have Jewish children,
"seed of men." And later when she had the child, she refrained for several years from going to the Mishkan in Shiloh,
in order to raise the child as it needed to be.
[Here too we see a thing and its opposite:
through not going to the Mishkan in Shiloh,
she brought it about that her son,
would be "and he dwelled there forever"].
From this we derive the instruction for the women and daughters of Israel:
The role of every woman and daughter in Israel is,
to do all that is incumbent upon her to fulfill the matter of "be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it." But the "subduing" must be done by her husband,
it is the way of a man to subdue –
because since "all the glory of the king's daughter is within," she must occupy herself with innermost matters,
and as we learn this from that which it is written "and subdue it" deficiently,
that specifically it is the way of a man to subdue.
But regarding "be fruitful and multiply" there is no "deficiency,"
and on the contrary –
it is written "be fruitful and multiply" in the plural,
both the man and the woman.
What this means simply,
to establish growth in Israel, our sons and our daughters,
until it will be "and fill the earth" –
through the introduction that this is in a manner that it is a kosher home,
kashrut of eating and drinking,
a pure home,
family purity,
and a luminous home,
by means of the Shabbat and Yom Tov and Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur and Simchat Torah etc. candle.
And particularly according to the determination of this year,
as it was on Rosh Hashanah,
that one recites "Shehecheyanu" on two consecutive nights for the lighting of the candle,
and immediately afterward is Shabbat –
"for thirty-six hours that light served her."
That through these three matters specific to the women and daughters of Israel,
and the one that surpasses them all –
to establish Jewish generations,
there will come further completeness of the people,
"with our young and with our old, with our sons and with our daughters,"
and "completeness of the Torah,"
through completeness and addition in the fulfillment of the commandments,
that a body grows from kosher food and kosher drinks
[as the Ramban writes,
that this implants the nature of good character traits in the human body,
as understood from his explanation regarding the forbidden animals for eating, that this is because they have character traits opposite to the good etc.],
and the commandment of charity, which is equivalent to all the commandments,
which is also connected with this that one gives charity from one's time and from one's body and from one's effort and from one's soul,
and occupies oneself with the famous campaigns:
love of Israel,
unity of Israel,
education of others,
and all the more so and how much more so education of oneself,
Torah,
tefillin,
mezuzah,
charity,
a house full of books –
Yavneh and its sages,
with the three campaigns that pertain to the women and daughters of Israel mentioned above –
whose acronym is Chanah,
challah, niddah, lighting of the candle.
That all the above brings very soon the most essential and most inner and most complete campaign –
That together with the completeness of the people and the Torah and the land
(until "the Lord your God will enlarge your border"),
one also has the completeness of the redemption,
That the completeness of the redemption is specifically when it comes through our righteous Mashiach,
who "will come and redeem us and lead us upright to our land" in completeness,
because one travels together with the Torah in its completeness and all Jews in their completeness,
and in a land that is in its completeness,
both physically and spiritually.
And this is connected and draws down the "vessel that holds blessing,"
the blessing of the Holy One, blessed be He,
which is peace,
and this is given by the Most High Himself,
through that which "the Lord will give strength to His people,"
"strength" is nothing but Torah,
"the Lord will bless His people with peace" is fulfilled in the last days of exile,
"may there be peace within your walls, tranquility within your palaces,"
with all the eight matters enumerated at the end of tractate Berachot.
And it becomes "and for all the children of Israel there was light in their dwellings" together with the assistance of the nations of the world,
and there will be peace between Jews and non-Jews –
consequently non-Jews know that they must help Jews in their Judaism,
and also help in the departure from exile in a manner of "and behold, one like a son of man came with the clouds of heaven,"
consequently "kings shall be your foster fathers and their queens your nursing mothers."
And as mentioned,
all these matters come more quickly as a result of the commandment of charity.
Therefore, we will now conduct the fundraising for the "Keren Chanah,"
And together with this they will also distribute,
through the tanks. To each one a dollar –
and specifically a single note that is connected with unity,
and this is even more unifying because it comes down into money –
in order to give to charity at the appropriate time,
And how good it is that one should add from his own,
and whoever adds, they add to him,
Also an addition in the writing and sealing for a good and sweet year,
in the revealed and manifest good,
below ten handbreadths,
and in our actual immediate time,
And with joy and a good heart.
One must add further,
even though it is said every year,
that whoever wishes can write his name together with his mother's name in order to take the note to the grave of the Rebbe, the father-in-law.
