English translation 1
This is a farbrengen connected with Erev Yud-Tes Kislev,
This is a farbrengen connected with Erev Yud-Tes Kislev,
and in addition, it is also the day of Shabbos.
Both matters—Erev Yud-Tes Kislev and Shabbos—are connected with farbrengen.
Regarding Shabbos:
It is stated in Yalkut Shimoni1
(and in Midrashim)
2 "And Moshe assembled—the Holy One, blessed be He, said to Moshe: Make for yourself great assemblies and expound before them in public the laws of Shabbos, so that future generations may learn from you to assemble congregations every Shabbos and to gather in synagogues and study halls to teach and instruct Israel the words of Torah, etc."
Therefore, Shabbos is a time suitable for holding a farbrengen,
also a Chassidic farbrengen,
where Jews gather together to increase in Torah, prayer, and mitzvos,
and particularly the mitzvah of tzedakah, which is greater than all the mitzvos and is equivalent to all the mitzvos3, etc.
The connection of
(Erev)
Yud-Tes Kislev to farbrengen:
The concept of farbrengen is simply gathering together,
which is also the concept of "Your wellsprings will spread forth outward"
(the concept of Yud-Tes Kislev,
that one gathers all parts of the world, including even the "outward." Because "Your wellsprings will spread forth outward" does not mean that one disseminates the wellsprings only in the outward,
but that one disseminates the wellsprings even in the outward,
and certainly they are present in the inward,
and certainly in the innermost of the inward. And the novelty in this is that one disseminates them even in the outward, until the outermost outward.
From this, the concept of Yud-Tes Kislev—"Your wellsprings will spread forth outward"—is understood: that one gathers together all levels of place,
from the innermost of the inward to the outermost outward, and consequently also all intermediate levels. And likewise regarding all levels of time,
because time and place are connected, as is known.
And since all matters begin from Torah, this begins from the fact that all levels of Torah are gathered together,
from the innermost of the inward of Torah to the outermost of the outward of Torah.
Therefore, on Erev Yud-Tes Kislev,
and especially since it is the day of Shabbos,
the concept of farbrengen is particularly appropriate,
and a Chassidic farbrengen,
which "Your people are all righteous"3—there is an additional difference in how much this descends upon the Jews in actual deed.
And it is known the saying of the Baal HaGeulah,
the Alter Rebbe
(which my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe, transmitted and it has already been printed4),
that what a Chassidic farbrengen can accomplish, the angel Michael cannot accomplish.
This refers to the angel Michael,
"your prince" and "the great prince"5,
and as is known6, among the angels themselves there are several types,
and among them "He creates ministers" and "whose ministers"7,
angels that exist forever,
and angels that are temporary,
and the angel Michael is among the angels that exist forever,
and among them themselves he is the great prince—and nevertheless, a Chassidic farbrengen accomplishes more than the angel Michael can accomplish!
This is so regarding every farbrengen in all times.
And certainly during the farbrengen in the month of Kislev,
and certainly on Erev Yud-Tes Kislev,
the holiday of holidays8,
and certainly on the day of Shabbos.
All the above is the virtue of Erev Yud-Tes Kislev and the virtue of the day of Shabbos,
therefore it is then appropriate to hold a farbrengen. In addition to this, there is an even greater elevation,
because in this year they
(Erev Yud-Tes Kislev and Shabbos)
coincide, and each one influences the other:
Shabbos influences and effects upon Yud-Tes Kislev the elevation of Shabbos,
that immediately from Shabbos one enters into Yud-Tes Kislev,
without any interval of time in between.
When Yud-Tes Kislev occurs on the third day
(as it was the first time9),
this is also connected with Shabbos. As the Gemara says10,
and the Alter Rebbe rules in Shulchan Aruch11,
that until the third day one may make Havdalah,
because until then it is considered
(after the fact)
as Motzaei Shabbos. But it is simply understood that this does not apply to the connection of Yud-Tes Kislev with Shabbos when Yud-Tes Kislev occurs simply on the first day of the week,
which begins from Motzaei Shabbos in its simple sense,
when one makes Havdalah ab initio.
On the other hand, Yud-Tes Kislev has an influence and effect upon Shabbos
(in the determination of this year),
and particularly Shabbos after midday,
when one does not say "Tzidkascha Tzedek" in the Minchah prayer12 because the time already has a connection to the following day,
Yud-Tes Kislev.
Here one sees tangibly the influence and effect of 19 Kislev on Shabbos.
And from this -.
From the connection between 19 Kislev and Shabbos which is the eve of 19 Kislev
(in this year)
and the effect of one upon the other must be a lesson until in actual deed,
in a manner that one should see it with physical eyes,
as the redemption of 19 Kislev was in the manner of "Hashem has done wondrously and greatly in the land",
in the language of the Alter Rebbe in his well-known letter.
And this must be a simple and understandable lesson for everyone, even for a simple person,
simply.
And with an introduction:
In this matter that Shabbos is the eve of 19 Kislev,
i.e., that from Shabbos one must enter into the service of 19 Kislev,
there is a wondrous thing,
and as has been discussed many times, regarding these matters one does not grasp them:
19 Kislev is the day of redemption of the Alter Rebbe. Simply, the redemption is connected with the dissemination of the wellsprings of Chassidus outward,
for which the imprisonment came and afterwards the Alter Rebbe was redeemed from it.
As the matter is simply:
If the study of the secrets of Torah had been in a manner that each person would study for himself,
not in a manner of dissemination,
naturally the imprisonment would not have come,
there would not have been the storm, neither above nor below;
עס וואלט ניט געווען דער שטורעם בזה ניט למעלה און ניט למטה;
But since the study of the secrets of Torah was in a manner of dissemination,
from this came the storm and the imprisonment etc.
Because they took the precious stone from the crown of the king and gave it to everyone,
until it overflowed to the lips etc. - as is known the parable of the Alter Rebbe about this with all the details of the expressions - from this came the accusation and imprisonment.
And afterwards,
at the time of the redemption,
it was simply a redemption from the accusation against the dissemination of the wellsprings outward,
and therefore then
(after the redemption)
there was an even greater storm in the dissemination of the wellsprings.
The matter of Shabbos is that then "all your work is done". Shabbos is about delight,
"And you shall call Shabbos a delight",
and "there is no sadness in it",
until even if for some reason one wants to fast on Shabbos,
it becomes for him a matter of delight,
as the Alter Rebbe rules in the Shulchan Aruch.
And on the day of Shabbos there is the matter of rest,
"Shabbos came, rest came",
until "complete rest",
until "complete rest" not merely according to the measure of man,
but "complete rest that you desire",
and this becomes the rest of Jews,
as we say in "Atah Echad" in the Minchah prayer of Shabbos.
And Shabbos is connected with the matter of the seal. It follows that Shabbos is connected with innerness and encompassing etc.
That is, Shabbos is above all matters of exile. And as the statements "He said 'separate your festivals' and He did not say 'separate your Shabbos'",
because on Shabbos there is no matter of "separation". And as explained in Derech Mitzvosecha
(of the Tzemach Tzedek),
in connection with a story about the Alter Rebbe,
that on Shabbos eve
(after midday, analogous to how Shabbos after midday is connected with 19 Kislev,
as above)
there is the ascent of the worlds,
and there is no matter of the clarifications of good and evil,
and then the severities etc. do not dominate,
there is only good.
Even more:
Shabbos is above all measures and limitations,
even those of holiness. As explained in many places that on the day of Shabbos there is the ascent of the worlds above speech and thought. Which refers to the speech of the Holy One, blessed be He,
and nevertheless on Shabbos the worlds are elevated above that,
because then all limitations fall away,
also limitations of holiness.
Until Shabbos is even above Torah. That Torah is above the world is not a novelty. But the novelty is that Shabbos is above Torah,
as our Sages said, with difficulty they permitted speaking words of Torah on Shabbos,
the Alter Rebbe explains in the additions to Torah Or that this is because Shabbos is above Torah.
After all this, when one knows what Shabbos is,
and one tells a Jew that this year Shabbos is the eve of Yud-Tes Kislev, the eve of the redemption of Yud-Tes Kislev, a Jew asks:
How does the concept of geulah fit here? It is written that on Shabbos, which is higher than all concepts,
and "all your work is done" and there is no sadness in it,
then there are no concepts from which one needs to be redeemed, so what does geulah mean?
From what should one be redeemed?!
Geulah means that beforehand there was galus and from it one is redeemed; here we are standing on Shabbos,
so how does geulah apply after that?!
In another year
(when Yud-Tes Kislev does not occur on the first day immediately after Shabbos)
there is the concept of geulah on Yud-Tes Kislev,
because between Shabbos and Yud-Tes Kislev there are intermediate days,
consequently on Yud-Tes Kislev the concept of Shabbos does not shine,
then there are constraints from the weekdays,
afterwards comes the geulah of Yud-Tes Kislev;
קומט דערנאך די גאולה פון י"ט כסלו;
but when Yud-Tes Kislev is on the first day,
and directly from Shabbos one enters Yud-Tes Kislev,
then Shabbos shines and influences into Yud-Tes Kislev, so how does the concept of geulah fit?!
The explanation of this is:
On the day of Shabbos, indeed "all your work is done",
and then there is complete rest,
and "all your work is done" includes all matters of work,
not only regarding physical matters,
but also regarding spiritual matters,
our deeds and our service in spiritual work,
it is said that on Shabbos "all your work is done":
regardless of one's standing and state before Shabbos,
when Shabbos comes, one's work and service are in the manner of "done".
And this speaks about all Jews,
even a Jew who does not know about this law in the Shulchan Aruch,
regarding him too it is written that on Shabbos "all your work is done". For this is a law in the Shulchan Aruch where no explanations apply.
And it is said that "all your work is done":
The work of each one according to his level
(and not the work of another)
is done.
That is, not only the work and service that is below his level is done,
but even if he stands on a very lofty level,
consequently his work and service are then in a most lofty manner, that too is done.
That is, simply in avodah:
When one has studied Chassidus from the Alter Rebbe
(which is the concept of "be more careful" in connection with Yud-Tes Kislev)
and from the Rebbe, my father-in-law, the Nasi of our generation,
and has immersed and delved in it,
and for him the study that leads to action was great,
that is, the study was complete for him, then when Shabbos comes, this completeness is elevated further,
in the manner of
("all your work")
done.
Furthermore:
Even if he estimates himself higher than he is
(more than "your work" according to his true level),
as he sometimes does regarding his other matters,
that he estimates himself higher than he is,
consequently he must estimate himself higher than he is also in his holy service, and it becomes his level and his work.
And all the more so when this is on the negative side:
The Gemara says "she considers it a forbidden piece for herself".
That is, when one prohibits something upon himself,
although it is actually permitted,
it is lowered from its level. So certainly in a good measure,
when one estimates himself higher than he is, it becomes a holy piece for him,
this becomes his level,
and consequently a more elevated service is demanded of him according to the level he estimated for himself.
So he asks, from where will he take strength for this? He is told:
If he does not have strength for this,
he should demand it from the Almighty.
And truly, he does not need to demand this from the Above, because the Above gives it to him on his own
(because he valued himself thus).
As known, the story that the holy Rebbe, my father-in-law, the Admor, said
(regarding a matter of charity)
that when a Jew decides to do a good thing beyond his worth
(at the time of decision),
they open for him from above new channels, with the emphasis on new, so that he can carry out the decision in actuality. As this was in actuality in this building with so-and-so son of so-and-so,
and with the money that came to him through the new channels that were opened for him
(at the time he made the decision)
they actually printed the responsa of the Tzemach Tzedek!
And just as this is regarding charity,
so too is this regarding all matters of Torah and mitzvot,
that when one decides to do a good thing and at the time of action he does not reach it,
they open for him new channels so that he can fulfill it in actuality.
From this it is also understood in our matter regarding Shabbat, eve of Yud Tes Kislev:
When the holy time of Shabbat arrives, and Shabbat is "sanctified and established",
not like the festivals which "Israel sanctifies the times", then "all your work is done" is nullified,
all the labors and works of a Jew which he did previously,
regardless of how they were,
they become in completeness elevated more,
in a manner of "done".
So that even if he values himself higher than he is,
his labor and work become,
and this too is included in "all your work is done".
Afterwards comes a second matter in this Shabbat, that it is the eve of Yud Tes Kislev,
that Yud Tes Kislev has an influence and effect on this Shabbat,
and this Shabbat is an eve and preparation for Yud Tes Kislev,
it has an influence and effect on Yud Tes Kislev,
so that the service should be nullified in a more elevated manner than it is on Yud Tes Kislev in its own right.
And the explanation:
After all the elevations that exist on Shabbat, there must then be an even higher service on Yud Tes Kislev. For Yud Tes Kislev,
the festival of redemption of the old Rebbe,
is the festival of festivals,
as the holy Rebbe, my father-in-law, calls it. And the simple explanation of this is,
that even regarding the other festivals,
the three pilgrimage festivals,
Yud Tes Kislev is a festival.
That is, just as a festival is regarding weekdays, so is Yud Tes Kislev regarding the other festivals.
And since all festivals
(pilgrimage festivals)
are "a memorial to the Exodus from Egypt",
the time of our freedom,
redemption from Egypt and from constraints and limitations, it follows that Yud Tes Kislev,
the festival of festivals,
is even more an exodus and redemption from exile and from constraints and limitations,
than on the other festivals,
and so much more so that this is like the value of festivals regarding weekdays.
Therefore,
even when Yud Tes Kislev occurs immediately after Shabbat,
after all the elevations of Shabbat when all measurements and limitations, even of holiness, are nullified and descend,
and there are no matters of might and exile etc., Yud Tes Kislev,
the festival of festivals,
is even higher,
because then there is the matter of redemption in the most elevated manner.
And on the contrary, since Yud Tes Kislev comes immediately after Shabbat,
after Shabbat there must be "ascending in holiness",
that one must come to even higher.
And as on the day of Shabbat there is ascending in holiness regarding the eve of Shabbat,
and likewise on the day of Shabbat itself there is ascending in holiness in the time of the day of Shabbat regarding the night of Shabbat,
and in the time of the ratzon deratzon regarding before, so too is there ascending in holiness on Yud Tes Kislev which comes immediately after Shabbat regarding Shabbat itself.
So that then
(on Yud Tes Kislev)
the service is in such an elevated manner,
that relative to this elevation, his previous state is like exile,
and therefore the service on Yud Tes Kislev is in a manner of redemption regarding this exile.
And even though on Shabbat "all your work is done" with all the elevations therein as above,
and he thinks that he does not reach being elevated higher, then when the Jew only decides to be elevated even higher on Yud Tes Kislev,
they open for him new channels so that he can fulfill it in actuality.
From this is understood the instruction of this Shabbat,
eve of Yud Tes Kislev, that however high his service is,
he can,
and he receives the power to be elevated even higher.
And this is a simple instruction, understandable even for a simple person,
because to every simple person one can simply explain the elevation of Yud-Tes Kislev when he knows that this is called the Chag HaChagim,
as above.
And this is an instruction that must come down into actual deed,
because "the deed is the main thing,"
and an instruction for actual deed not only for a simple person,
but also for those who hold on a higher level than this. Because "the deed is the main thing" was said to every Jew,
also to those who hold on elevated levels.
And on the contrary, the higher the level on which he stands,
the more is demanded of him.
And as discussed many times, the touchstone of whether one has heard and understood what is being said,
is if this comes down into actual deed. "Tafaro da placho."
It could be that he hears,
until he listens intently,
until even that he understands, but this is not enough,
rather this must come down into actual deed in its simple sense,
for him in his service.
And regarding the practical:
To accept good resolutions at this farbrengen and then bring them down into actual deed.
Starting with an actual deed that everyone on this Shabbos has the choice regarding it:
to contemplate a matter in Chassidus from the maamarim of the Alter Rebbe,
the Baal HaGeulah of Yud-Tes Kislev.
For this is indeed a matter of "this is more stringent at this time." And the explanation of this is not that he does not do other matters,
but rather that all matters that he do go through the gate of this matter, namely "this is more stringent."
And there should be an increase in actual deed in the study of Chassidus of the Alter Rebbe,
an increase in quality and in quantity,
for quantity relative to quality is like deed in actuality relative to the levels above deed.
And such an increase that this is called redemption relative to the level on which he stood beforehand,
however high that level was. And "great is study that brings to deed,"
for the greatness in study is,
that which it brings to deed, that from this learning it should come down into actual deed,
until in a manner that this is visible to fleshly eyes, to the eyes of all the nations,
"Hashem has done wondrously and greatly in the land,"
as the Alter Rebbe writes in his letter,
and he writes the wording three times,
for "by three times it is established":
To do in all these campaigns:
Unity of Israel and love of Israel,
education,
Torah,
tefillin,
mezuzah,
charity,
a house full of books, "a house will be built and wisdom,"
candles of holy Shabbos and Yom Tov
(not speaking of Shabbos itself),
kashrus, the laws of Chol HaMoed, and family purity,
and the main point and above all, that every Jew should have a letter in one of the general Sifrei Torah.
And as mentioned,
to do all this in actual deed.
And this will further hasten the true and complete redemption, that it should come in actual deed,
since every Jew does the service in actual deed.
And we have the promise about this in our parshah: "And You said, 'I will surely do good with you, and I will make your seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be counted for multitude,'"
"And You said" in the second person,
because all will see this revealed with fleshly eyes,
"And the glory of Hashem will be revealed, and all flesh together will see, etc.,"
Speedily, in our very own days.
On this Shabbos there is an additional matter, that this is Shabbos Parshas Vayishlach.
For Shabbos has a special connection with the parshah that is read then,
more than the weekdays of this parshah, because on Shabbos the entire parshah is read,
unlike each day of the week of this parshah, each day has a connection only with one part of the seven parts into which the parshah is divided,
with the part relevant to that day.
Not so on Shabbos, the entire parshah is read. On Monday and Thursday the parshah is also read,
and also on the Minchah of the preceding Shabbos,
so that the Torah is read three times during the week,
for three times establishes a chazakah. Sometimes it is read more than three times during the week
(aside from the entire parshah on Shabbos),
when there is a Yom Tov in the middle of the week,
but in any case, three times it is read every week, but then only the beginning of the parshah is read
(not the entire parshah),
not so on Shabbos, the entire parshah is read.
For this is an elevation of Shabbos relative to the other days of the week of this parshah
(in connection with the weekly parshah),
that then the entire parshah is read.
And in addition to this, there is also on Shabbat the reading of the Haftarah, which is a matter in its own right from the Parsha, as is also evident from the fact that we make a special blessing
(in its own right)
before the Haftarah,
and blessings
(plural)
after the Haftarah.
This is not present even in the Torah reading of the Parsha
(before the Haftarah),
for in the time of the Mishnaic Sages, they made only one blessing before the Torah reading and one blessing after the entire reading
(and afterwards it was instituted that each person who ascends to the Torah should make a blessing before the ascent and after it,
i.e., each of the seven called up);
ד.ה. יעדערער פון די ז' קרואים) 43;
however, regarding the reading of the Haftarah, we make several blessings,
one blessing before the Haftarah and blessings after the Haftarah.
This is indeed a wonder, that for the Haftarah we make more blessings than for the Torah reading:
A Haftarah has twenty-one verses; there are Haftarot that have fewer verses than that,
and this is not the place for it,
but more than that it cannot be. For this is fewer verses than there are even in the smallest Parsha in the Torah:
The smallest Parsha in the Torah,
Parshat Vayelech,
has thirty verses,
(more than twenty-one verses),
and certainly the long Parshot have more than that,
like our Parsha
(Parshat Vayishlach),
which is one of the longest Parshot,
there are only a few Parshot in the Torah that have more verses than Parshat Vayishlach. Now how is it that for the Haftarah we make more blessings, where blessing is from the term "drawing down," than for the reading of the Parsha?!
On one hand, they say that the Haftarah is related to and of the same kind as the Parsha,
and on the other hand, they say that for the Haftarah we make more blessings than for the Parsha!
Regarding the Parsha and the Haftarah of Vayishlach:
On this Shabbat, one sees clearly the connection of the Haftarah with the Parsha:
In the Parsha it is written that Yaakov said to Esav, "Let my master pass before his servant etc., until I come to my master, to Seir." Rashi explains: "And when will he go (to Seir)? In the days of Mashiach, as it is said, 'And saviors shall ascend Mount Zion to judge the mountain of Esav.'" This is a verse from the Haftarah,
the last verse therein.
(to Seir)?
In the days of Mashiach,
as it is said, 'And saviors shall ascend Mount Zion to judge the mountain of Esav.'" This is a verse from the Haftarah,
the last verse therein.
And Rashi explains this according to the simple meaning of the verse of "until I come to my master, to Seir." Then Rashi says, "And there are those who interpret it differently, many,"
it is understood from this that before this in Rashi is the simple meaning of the verse.
Here one sees the connection of the Haftarah with the Parsha, "until I come to my master, to Seir," as it is taught in the simple meaning of the verse.
Several commentators,
literalists,
great ones of Israel,
and even Tannaim and Amoraim,
interpret "until I come to my master, to Seir" as referring to a different matter
(not to "And saviors shall ascend Mount Zion to judge the mountain of Esav").
According to this, one does not see clearly any connection between the Haftarah and the Parsha, but they also admit that "these and those are the words of the living God,"
and consequently, there is also another interpretation of this verse,
the interpretation that Rashi brings,
that it refers to "And saviors shall ascend etc." It turns out that even according to them, the verse has a connection with the verse "And saviors shall ascend etc." from the Haftarah. Indeed, not a connection according to the simple meaning
(because according to them, the verse in the Parsha speaks according to the simple meaning about a different matter),
but at least according to the hint,
the homiletical interpretation, or the secret.
However, according to Rashi, this is the simple interpretation of the verse,
and consequently, the connection with the Haftarah is in an open manner.
And in addition to this:
The interpretation that Rashi brings down is the conclusion in the Midrash.
The aforementioned verse from the Haftarah
(which Rashi brings on "until I come to my master, to Seir")
is the last verse in the Haftarah. From this it is understood that it has a special connection with the final blessings of the Haftarah. The final blessings are indeed for the entire Haftarah,
but obviously they have a special connection to this last verse
(which comes immediately before the blessings).
In this verse
(the last one)
itself, it speaks about two matters:
"And saviors shall ascend Mount Zion to judge the mountain of Esav"
(which Rashi brings down),
and "And the kingdom shall be the Lord's," a second matter that comes with a conjunctive vav
("And it shall be etc.").
And as is evident from that which is spoken earlier in the Haftarah:
In the earlier verses it speaks about the judgment of Esau by the Holy One, blessed be He, or by the nations, etc.,
Afterwards it comes to the end of the Haftarah where he concludes the matter "And saviors shall ascend Mount Zion to judge the mountain of Esau." Afterwards another matter comes
(with a vav hachibur)
which is not spoken of earlier in the Haftarah "And the kingdom shall be the Lord's."
And as is also understood from the Rambam, the two matters
("And saviors shall ascend Mount Zion to judge the mountain of Esau" and "And the kingdom shall be the Lord's"):
In the Laws of Kings, the Rambam writes the order of the future redemption:
"A king from the house of David will arise, etc., and wage the wars of the Lord,"
which the war of the Lord is primarily war against Amalek,
who is from the seed of Esau, this is the matter of "to judge the mountain of Esau." And afterwards "build the Temple in its place and gather the dispersed of Israel,"
and only afterwards, at a later time, "he will perfect the entire world to serve the Lord together, as it is said, 'For then I will turn to the peoples a pure language, that they may all call upon the name of the Lord, to serve Him with one accord,'"
which this is at the time when it will be "And the kingdom shall be the Lord's."
It emerges from this that "to judge the mountain of Esau" and "And the kingdom shall be the Lord's" are two separate matters that will be at two separate times,
first "to judge the mountain of Esau" and afterwards "And the kingdom shall be the Lord's."
And regarding these two matters, there is an advantage in the Haftarah of this Shabbat over the Torah portion:
The first matter,
"And saviors shall ascend Mount Zion to judge the mountain of Esau,"
is stated in the Torah portion in a concealed manner,
in the verse "Until I come to my lord, to Seir,"
and one must come to Rashi that he should explain it;
און מ'דארף אנקומען צו רש"י אז ער זאל דאס מפרש זיין;
but in the Haftarah it is stated explicitly.
And the second matter in the verse,
"And the kingdom shall be the Lord's" is entirely a new matter that is not stated at all in the Torah portion:
When Rashi brings down on "Until I come to my lord, to Seir" the verse from the Haftarah,
he brings only the beginning of the verse,
"And saviors shall ascend Mount Zion to judge the mountain of Esau,"
and does not even say "etc.,"
which proves that "Until I come to my lord, to Seir" refers only to the beginning of the verse and not to the end of the verse. It emerges that the end of the verse,
"And the kingdom shall be the Lord's" is a new matter that comes specifically in the Haftarah.
The explanation of the difference between the two matters
(and times)
"And saviors shall ascend Mount Zion to judge the mountain of Esau" and "And the kingdom shall be the Lord's":
"And saviors shall ascend Mount Zion to judge the mountain of Esau" indeed affects the mountain of Esau,
but this does not cause that the mountain of Esau should be entirely transformed into holiness. As the matter of judgment
("to judge the mountain of Esau")
is simply:
It is not the simple meaning that whenever a judge states his verdict, they do not obey him and one must come to a police officer who will enforce the law in practice,
but rather sometimes the judge himself affects through his very speech when issuing the verdict upon the litigants. As was simply the matter of the Sanhedrin to guide Jews and affect them how to conduct themselves.
And as stated in the Mishnah in Avot that one says to a judge "When the litigants stand before you, they should be in your eyes as wicked, and when they depart from before you, they should be in your eyes as innocent when they have accepted the judgment upon themselves,"
i.e., that one does not need to come to any police officer to enforce the law because the judge and arbiter and rabbi explains his ruling so well to the litigants,
until they themselves admit to him and are "accepting the judgment upon themselves,"
and moreover the litigant even thanks the rabbi for the good that he did for him by saving him from a perutah,
the life of his soul,
which in his possession is truly not his but belongs to a stranger,
as was revealed through the judgment,
and consequently one saves him so that he should not use that perutah,
whose vitality until now was from the lower kelipat nogah.
Correspondingly, the matter of "to judge the mountain of Esau" is,
that one affects the mountain of Esau in the manner of judgment,
that even he admits to the side of holiness, the matter of itkafya
(but not that he is entirely remade into holiness, it'hapcha).
Afterwards comes "And the kingdom shall be the L-rd's," that the entire reality of the world and also Mount Esau become transformed into holiness,
and he himself of his own accord conducts himself as is proper.
(One does not need to act upon him as in "to judge Mount Esau").
As the verse "My soul faints" [refers to] the concept of transformation.
That these are two times that will be in the future to come:
First will be "And saviors shall ascend Mount Zion to judge Mount Esau,"
he will wage the war of the L-rd,
that one acts upon Mount Esau so that they conduct themselves as is proper. And afterwards a higher perfection,
"And the kingdom shall be the L-rd's,"
that the world itself conducts itself as is proper.
From this emerge two levels in the service of man:
Just as in the future to come there will be two modes and times of how one acts upon Mount Esau,
"to judge Mount Esau" and "And the kingdom shall be the L-rd's," so too are there two modes in the service of man regarding how he deals with his "Esau":
The service of subjugation,
"to judge Mount Esau,"
he indeed acts upon him that he should conduct himself as is proper,
but he does not yet transform him;
אבער ער מאכט אים נאך ניט איבער;
and afterwards the service of transformation,
"And the kingdom shall be the L-rd's," he transforms him,
so that he of his own accord conducts himself as he ought to.
Until he deals with Esau so that it should be "And he kissed him"
(Jacob),
not only according to the first interpretation
(which Rashi brings down)
"that he did not kiss him with all his heart,"
but also according to the second interpretation
(in Rashi)
that "he kissed him with all his heart."
What actually are the two interpretations
(of "And he kissed him").
"Some expounded...
that he did not kiss him with all his heart" and "Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai said: It is a known law that Esau hates Jacob, but his compassion was stirred at that moment and he kissed him with all his heart," corresponding to the two aforementioned concepts "And saviors shall ascend Mount Zion to judge Mount Esau" and
(afterwards)
"And the kingdom shall be the L-rd's":
"That he did not kiss him with all his heart" is like the action of "to judge Mount Esau" accomplishes,
that he acts upon Esau but not completely. And "he kissed him with all his heart" is the concept of "And the kingdom shall be the L-rd's,"
he becomes completely transformed,
"he kissed him with all his heart."
From which it is understood that both interpretations
(which Rashi brings on "And he kissed him")
are true.
And also the order in which Rashi brings the interpretations is precise,
as is known that also order in Torah is precise: first the interpretation "he did not kiss him with all his heart" and afterwards the interpretation "he kissed him with all his heart,"
one proceeds from the light to the heavy:
First one acts upon him that it should be "And he kissed him" but in the manner of "he did not kiss him with all his heart." And afterwards one arrives at a higher level that "he kissed him with all his heart."
Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, for whom there was no destruction and exile,
and for whom his Torah was his occupation, begins immediately with the interpretation that "he kissed him with all his heart."
But Rashi on the Torah,
who teaches the plain meaning of the verse,
which is also relevant to Jews who understand only the simple meaning,
for whom not all have their Torah as their occupation, the order is that one proceeds from the light to the heavy:
First one begins with "he did not kiss him with all his heart" [the service of] subjugation,
and only afterwards "he kissed him with all his heart" [the service of] transformation.
At first he holds at a low level,
and afterwards he acts that it should be "Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai said," he calls forth the Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai within him that he should begin to speak and say "he kissed him with all his heart,"
For with Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai there was no exile and destruction and his Torah was his occupation,
until Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai said "I can exempt the entire world from judgment,"
What the interpretation in this is not only that he can exempt the world from the punishment,
but that there is also the positive thing that emerges from the judgment and punishment,
as is known that the punishments in the Torah of kindness bring about a positive matter,
as explained in the Igrot Kodesh that this is like the parable of "a merciful, wise, and righteous father who strikes his son",
which is a matter of justice and righteousness
[there it does not say that this is a matter of kindness,
as is known from the discourse of the Rebbe, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, on this],
but it is indeed a matter of justice and righteousness,
therefore one cannot say that "I can exempt the entire world from judgment" means only from the punishment but not that there is the positive thing that comes about through the punishment
(that it wipes away the entire matter),
because then this would perhaps not be a virtue,
but certainly Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai was able to effect the nullification of judgment in the world and for it to be as if it had been brought about through the judgment and punishment,
And therefore,
from the aspect of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai within him,
"he kissed him with all his heart."
And when one proceeds according to the simple interpretation
(as per Rashi),
with the order from the light to the heavy,
first "he did not kiss him with all his heart" and then "he kissed him with all his heart",
then this brings about an elevation even relative to the manner of beginning immediately with "he kissed him with all his heart"
(as this is by Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai)
the virtue of the advantage of light from darkness,
that even Esau, who initially "he did not kiss him with all his heart", afterward "he kissed him with all his heart",
thus it becomes like the advantage of light from darkness.
And actually, also by Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai,
who begins immediately with "he kissed him with all his heart",
there is here the elevation of the advantage of light from darkness,
and accordingly it will be sweetened why Rabbi Shimon bar Lakish does not begin his interpretation with "he kissed him with all his heart",
but with the negative side "it is a known halacha that Esau hates Jacob, except that his mercy was stirred at that moment and he kissed him with all his heart." For prima facie:
He wants to bring out the virtue that "he kissed him with all his heart" — why does he bring the deficiency that "it is a known halacha that Esau hates Jacob"?
Rather, by this he brings out that in this there is the elevation of the advantage of light from darkness from the aspect of the matter of transformation:
that this Esau,
who from his aspect is "a hater of Jacob",
and not from his nature or from the evil of his choice,
but "it is a known halacha that Esau hates Jacob",
this is a halacha in the Torah and it cannot be otherwise at all, and nevertheless there was "his mercy was stirred at that moment and he kissed him with all his heart"! This brings out the great novelty of transformation that occurred,
with the elevation of the advantage of light from darkness.
And when one proceeds according to the order in the way of the simple interpretation
(Rashi),
the regular order,
one goes from the light to the heavy: first the first interpretation,
"he did not kiss him with all his heart",
subjugation,
and then the elevation of transformation "he kissed him with all his heart",
corresponding to the two matters
(and times)
in the haftarah "and saviors shall ascend Mount Zion to judge the mountain of Esau" and then "and the kingdom shall be the Lord's."
From this there is a simple lesson also for a simple person:
When he comes to the synagogue on this Shabbat and hears that they read in the Torah from Parshat Vayishlach, he knows,
or they tell him,
that this is the Chumash,
the Written Torah.
Then he hears them say the haftarah,
he asks what is this? They tell him:
This is the Prophets. He asks:
Early Prophets? They tell him no, Latter Prophets. From the most distinguished among them? No, rather from Obadiah
("The vision of Obadiah"),
who descends from Esau! So when he contemplates this a little, he goes out of his mind,
and especially when he sees that they make more blessings on the haftarah than on the Torah reading.
So they explain to him,
that this is what the Gemara says:
Why specifically did Obadiah the prophet say the haftarah? Because this is the matter of "from my house and from my father's house we will go with an axe":
In order to bring about in the world with Esau and the nations of the world, one must descend into the world,
and specifically one who is found in the world of Esau,
Obadiah the prophet who descended from Esau,
must say "and saviors shall ascend Mount Zion to judge the mountain of Esau" until "and the kingdom shall be the Lord's."
Unlike what is written in the Chumash,
in the Written Torah,
in Parshat Vayishlach
("until I come to my lord to Seir"),
this is not as Esau is found in the world,
but as he is found in the Torah.
The lesson from this simply:
It is not enough to have to do with Esau as he is found in the Torah,
rather one must go out into the world and there have to do with him and transform him,
first in the manner of "And saviors shall ascend Mount Zion to judge the mountain of Esau",
"He did not kiss him with all his heart",
subjugation,
and afterwards "And the kingdom shall be the Lord's",
"He kissed him with all his heart",
transformation,
that he kisses and helps Jews entirely with all his heart and soul and might,
"My soul is bowed down". And as we also have the instruction from the portion of Vayishlach "And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother":
As preparation for entering the Land of Israel, the first thing that Jacob did was that "And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother" in order to clarify Esau and deal with him so that he should conduct himself as he needs to conduct himself.
And superficially:
"And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother" was connected to the Land of Israel. There are two opinions regarding this,
whether this is connected to the Diaspora or to the Land of Israel,
and it is close to say that this is connected to the Land of Israel,
because it comes in continuation of "And he called the name of that place Machanayim",
which was on the way to the Land of Israel, the unification of the Diaspora with the Land of Israel,
in any case,
even if this is connected to the Diaspora,
but this was close to entering the Land of Israel, is it that Jacob then needed to do, he needed to prepare himself to fulfill the commandments dependent on the Land and the like?
Nevertheless, we see that the first thing that he did was "And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother"; he sent actual angels,
emissaries,
in order to deal with Esau as Esau stands in his depiction in the world,
and he instructs them to say "With Laban I sojourned, with the wicked Laban I sojourned and the 613 commandments I kept". He sends them to deal simply with the clarification of Esau that he should conduct himself as he needs to conduct himself,
until "And he kissed him" with both levels in this,
"He did not kiss him with all his heart" and afterwards "He kissed him with all his heart".
What the instruction from this is simply
(as above):
A Jew may think that he will only do with himself alone,
he will study Torah and pray alone and not have to do with the world. He will not occupy himself with the spreading of the wellsprings outward.
But there is an advantage in the work of clarifications,
the clarification of Esau,
that then specifically the advantage of light from darkness, he argues:
He will do in the clarification of Esau as Esau is found in the Torah. As was discussed once that there is "the Jacob and Esau mentioned in the portion",
as Esau is mentioned in the Torah portion,
which is as Esau is found in his root and source
(not as he is found in the world).
And since "He looked into the Torah and created the world", the Esau in the world derives from the Esau mentioned in the portion.
He will have to do with the Esau mentioned in the portion. And one brings another proof from Chassidus:
In the revealed part it states that everything derives from Torah. And Chassidus explains this at length based on the aforementioned statement of the Zohar "He looked into the Torah and created the world",
that all matters begin from Torah,
and that which there is an Esau in the world derives from that which there is an Esau in the Torah; he will have to do with Esau and with "gentileness" as they are in the Torah!
What "gentileness" in the Torah is, in general, the matter of difficulty and contradiction etc. which is in the Torah, as is understood from what is explained in Igeret HaKodesh that difficulty and contradiction in the Torah does not derive from the Tree of Life but from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil.
He will occupy himself with "Esau" and "gentileness" in the Torah; he will occupy himself with clarifying and pushing aside a difficulty and a contradiction in the Torah.
To this they say to him,
that it is not sufficient to deal with Esau as he is found in the Torah,
rather one must go out into the world and there deal with Esau literally.
And this is the simple instruction from the 19th of Kislev, that there must be the involvement in the spreading of the wellsprings outward literally:
He wants to do in the spreading of the wellsprings outward with the "outside" as it is found by himself,
or with the "outside" that is in the Torah,
the "outside" in spirituality. He wants to do in the campaigns as they are in spirituality; they say to him no! This is not the intention,
the intention is that he should do with the "outside" literally,
in the street,
in the world.
He must go out into the world and there engage with the Esau of the world so that he may be transformed. Until it will be "all your deeds should be for the sake of Heaven",
until that the physical itself becomes Heaven
(not only for the sake of Heaven),
until "Dehav",
as known all these levels in this.
One suggests that he should go and do in the campaigns. He argues:
He will sit and learn the laws regarding the campaigns,
the laws regarding the unity of Israel and love of Israel,
or education,
or Torah,
or Tefillin,
or Mezuzah,
or charity,
or a house full of books, build and its wise men,
or candles of holy Shabbat and Yom Tov,
or kashrut etc.,
or family purity,
And since whoever engages in the study of [the laws of] an offering, it is as if he offered [it], he thereby accomplishes what the actual campaigns accomplish!
And all the more so and a fortiori:
If they say whoever engages in the study of the burnt-offering, it is as if he offered a burnt-offering regarding a sacrifice from the Torah,
then certainly this is so regarding a directive of our Rabbis and Sages of blessed memory in later generations.
Consequently, through his studying Torah about the campaigns, he will thereby also have the virtue of the work of clarification and the advantage of light from darkness which is achieved through actually doing them.
The prince of our generation, the Rebbe, my teacher and father-in-law, tells him: No! The intention is not that he should learn about these matters in Torah,
but rather that he should simply go out into the street and speak with Jews about doing all these matters!
It should be "and he sent angels",
emissaries,
to Esau and speak with him and influence him that he should conduct himself as he needs to conduct himself.
And this they tell him himself, that he should not send another,
rather each and every one must himself be the emissary and in this itself "the one who performs the mitzvah is greater than the one who sends [an agent]"! And if he thinks that in this he can only begin doing and the remaining part of it he will leave for another, they tell him:
No, "one who begins a mitzvah, they tell him: Finish it!" He must finish it himself.
And at the time when one does the campaigns in their simple sense in the aforementioned manner,
and in all matters of spreading Judaism and spreading the wellsprings outward,
as instructed by our princes and leaders, one immediately receives their promise that they give powers so that one will be able to carry it out,
and one also has their blessings that one will be successful,
It only needs to be the "stand ready, all of you",
one immediately receives their powers and their blessings for success in everything.
That is, that it is not a service on condition of receiving reward or not on condition of receiving reward,
rather one thereby receives the blessing of success in everything.
Immediately, each and every one experiences his personal redemption,
until the general redemption of all Jews,
the true and complete redemption,
"And the kingdom shall be the Lord's".
Discourse (like a talk)
Beginning "And Jacob sent angels etc.".
As usual, upon learning a verse in the weekly portion with Rashi's commentary, it is in continuation of the above discussion* from the discourses of our princes and leaders on the matter of "And Jacob was left alone and a man wrestled etc.",
that this is the perfection of the elevation of Jacob,
as he is "alone";
ווי ער איז "לבדו";
so the perfection of Jacob in its simple sense is then revealed outwardly,
when "And Jacob came whole to the city of Shechem etc." we will stop on Rashi on the verse.
There are commentators who learn,
that "And Jacob came whole" means that he arrived in the city "Shalem"
(Shalem is the name of a city);
(שלם איז דער נאמען פון א שטאט);
and "the city of Shechem" means,
that it is near Shechem,
it belonged to Shechem,
"which is in the land of Canaan".
Rashi, however, does not learn this way,
rather that "Shalem" means whole,
and this refers to Jacob,
that upon arriving in Shechem,
he was "whole".
In what does the novelty consist that Jacob came "whole"? Rashi explains:
"Whole in his body, that he was healed from his limp".
That is, ostensibly there should have been a deficiency in Jacob;
ד.ה. לכאורה האט געדארפט זיין ביי יעקב'ן א חסרון;
and the verse innovates that upon coming to Shechem he became whole.
Afterwards Rashi continues: "Whole in his property, that nothing was lacking from all that gift":
First and foremost, Jacob himself
(in his body)
was "whole". However, since it says "whole" without specification,
it is understood,
that he was "whole" in all possible things.
And the novelty in this is "that nothing was lacking from all that gift":
Jacob had sent a great multitude of sheep etc. to Esau,
as the verse enumerates earlier,
which had to be with such a multitude that would affect Esau,
that he would be transformed. And as it indeed was afterwards in actuality,
that the gift accomplished that "and Esau ran toward him and embraced him etc. and kissed him." The great multitude of this gift is understandable, and nevertheless when he came to Shechem it was "nothing was lacking from all that gift."
Since Jacob became complete in all his matters,
this certainly includes his Torah, Rashi continues "complete in his Torah" and the novelty in this is "that he did not forget his learning in the house of Laban":
Being in the house of Laban, Jacob was indeed preoccupied with his work with Laban's flocks. And as Jacob himself said "with all my might I served your father"
(from which we learn how a worker must work for his employer),
to the extent of "by day the heat consumed me and frost by night" and as the Alter Rebbe brings this down in the laws of damages to body and soul in connection with causing pain to one's body for the sake of money. It is understandable that Jacob did not have time to study Torah,
and on the contrary, seemingly,
since he was in this situation for twenty years, he would seemingly have had to forget what he had previously studied in the tents of Shem and Eber. The verse states a novelty "and Jacob came complete" "complete in his Torah,
that he did not forget his learning in the house of Laban".
With this, the question that a five-year-old student of Scripture asks is also answered:
How does Rashi say that Jacob's "complete in his Torah" consisted of the fact that "he did not forget his learning"? Is this the completeness of Torah study?!
One must indeed advance in Torah,
so that it should continually increase
(and not merely ensure that one does not forget what one already has)!
Therefore Rashi is precise,
that here it speaks of when Jacob came from the house of Laban,
considering how Jacob worked in the house of Laban,
it is a great novelty in itself that Jacob did not forget his learning.
And as was once discussed at length the story about the Rogatchover,
who brought the dispute between the Babylonian and Jerusalem Talmuds regarding "the early pious ones would wait nine hours a day in prayer." The Gemara asks what became of their Torah? In the Jerusalem Talmud it states "because they were pious, a blessing was placed in their Torah",
but in the Babylonian Talmud it states that "their Torah is preserved" "that their learning is not forgotten." And the law is like the Babylonian Talmud that "their Torah" is only "preserved".
One must however understand:
What is actually difficult in the verse,
that Rashi needs to say all this length? The explanation in this is:
We already find by the earlier patriarchs Abraham and Isaac several times that they went on a journey:
Abraham went to Egypt and to the land of the Philistines etc.,
and even Isaac
(who did not go outside the land of Israel)
went to the land of the Philistines. The question arises:
Why do we not find that the Torah should state,
that upon returning from their journey they arrived in a manner of "complete"?
Furthermore:
Rashi himself says regarding Abraham,
that "the journey causes three things: it diminishes procreation and multiplication, and diminishes wealth, and diminishes fame, therefore he needed these three blessings" — surely the verse should have related when Abraham returned from the journey that he remained "complete" in these three things?
And one cannot answer,
that since by Abraham there was a promise
(the blessings "and I will make you a great nation etc.")
and consequently the verse does not need to explain that
(the promise was fulfilled and)
he remained "complete" because also by Jacob there was a promise from the Almighty "and I will guard you wherever you go etc.",
and furthermore Jacob's going on the journey
(on the way to the land of Israel)
was a matter of fulfilling the command of God "return to the land of your fathers etc.",
and nevertheless the verse declares,
that "and Jacob came complete";
אז "ויבא יעקב שלם";
then why do we not find likewise by Abraham and Isaac?
From this Rashi forces,
that the "and Jacob came complete" is not because of the essential matter of the road
(which diminishes the "three things",
as above),
but because of a special matter that was with Jacob.
And therefore Rashi explains the special novelty in each of the three matters:
"complete in his body that he was healed from his limp,
complete in his property that nothing was lacking from all that gift,
complete in his Torah that he did not forget his learning in the house of Laban".
But there is still a "blunt" difficulty in this matter upon which no one dwells:
How does one say,
that "and Jacob came complete to the city of Shechem" that only in Shechem was Jacob "complete" when all these three details that Rashi enumerates
(in which Jacob was "complete")
had already occurred before this,
thus,
that when coming to Succoth,
which was
(as Rashi explains in the verse before this)
earlier by eighteen months,
he was already "complete".
And in order:
"complete in his body that he was healed from his limp" Rashi had already explained on the verse "and the sun shone for him:
for his need to heal his limp". Thus he was already healed immediately after "and a man wrestled with him";
"לצרכו לרפאות את צלעתו". איז ער דאך שוין נתרפא געווארן תיכף נאך "ויאבק איש עמו" 101;
"complete in his property that nothing was lacking from all that gift" this occurred immediately,
as it is stated in the Midrash "the Holy One, blessed be He, filled his lack and returned everything to him immediately". "complete in his Torah that he did not forget his learning in the house of Laban" this was already immediately when he left the house of Laban.
The wonder in this is even greater:
Rashi in his commentary on the Talmud explains the matter of "complete in his Torah" "that he did not forget his learning because of the burden of the road". According to this explanation it is understood,
how the matter of "complete in his Torah" is connected with his coming to "Shechem",
which is already
(at the end of the road)
in the land of Canaan,
the place of his father's residence.
When it comes however to his commentary on the Torah,
Rashi changes from his commentary on the Talmud,
and instead of "because of the burden of the road",
he writes "in the house of Laban",
which is not connected with his coming to Shechem!
As we have already mentioned Rashi's commentary in the verse before this that Jacob was in Succoth eighteen months, we will explain to you Rashi's commentary:
Rashi dwells on "and he built for himself a house" and explains:
he stayed there eighteen months, summer and winter and summer. Succoth summer, house winter, Succoth summer.
That is, the three matters in the verse Succoth, house, and Succoth allude to three periods of summer, winter, and summer,
consequently it comes out that he stayed there eighteen months.
In the verse the word Succoth is repeated "therefore he called the name of the place Succoth" but this does not enter into the calculation,
because this is not from Jacob's action;
ווייל דאס איז ניט פון פעולת יעקב;
Jacob did three things: (a)
he journeyed to Succoth, (b)
and he built for himself a house, and (c)
and for his cattle he made Succoth.
However the matter of "he called the name of the place Succoth" does not mean that Jacob called it so,
but that everyone called the place thus.
It is not understandable:
why does Rashi dwell on the words "and he built for himself a house",
seemingly,
whichever way you look at it:
Rashi should have dwelt,
either at the beginning of the matter,
or at the end of the matter. But what place is it to dwell on the words "and he built for himself a house" which is written between the two instances of Succoth?!
The wonder is even greater:
Rashi does not even write an "etcetera" that would allude to the continuation of the verse "and for his cattle he made Succoth",
but he quotes "and he built for himself a house".
Also one must understand how the Raam
(and other commentators ask):
"And I do not know why Rashi, may his memory be for a blessing, brought this in his commentary". Seemingly the verse "and Jacob journeyed to Succoth and he built for himself a house and for his cattle he made Succoth" is entirely smooth in the simple meaning of Scripture. Now why does Rashi need to dwell on this verse at all?
Even more:
Rashi's explanation that Succoth, house, and Succoth were in the three periods of "summer, winter, and summer" is contrary to the simple meaning of Scripture,
because simply "the house and the Succoth were both made at one time, the house for himself and the Succoth for his cattle".
And as will be explained below.
Regarding the notes of Father on the Zohar, there is a note immediately at the beginning of the series that is connected with Mashiach,
David the King Mashiach:
He stands on what is stated in the Zohar:
"Life he asked of You, You gave him, etc. ... this is King David, etc. ... and from the first man there were seventy years that King David existed in the world." And afterwards it is stated in the Zohar that also the Patriarchs and Joseph gave him seventy years.
At first glance it is not understood:
According to this, David should have lived
(not seventy years, but)
one hundred and forty years,
because he received two times seventy years
(once from David and once from the Patriarchs and Joseph).
The Tzemach Tzedek asks this question in Derech Mitzvosecha,
and there is no place here to elaborate on this,
and especially since it is already printed and everyone can look it up.
The father stands and says:
"He was precise to say 'by Jacob in the world' that he did not say this regarding Abraham and Joseph,
and likewise regarding David he said above the word 'in the world',"
and he explains that this is because "Jacob did not die,
and likewise David, king of Israel, lives and endures. And see in Likkutei Torah on the passage 'And the pure one shall sprinkle upon the impure on the third day and on the seventh day' there." And he then explains this in the letters of the Kabbalah, etc.
However,
as in all his notes,
he does not explain what one can derive from this in terms of actual service.
Also one must understand:
Why is the Zohar precise to call David with the title King "David the King"?
Here is the place to continue what was discussed regarding the matter of anointing a king.
It was discussed,
that at first glance it is a wonder that one does not find it stated anywhere that Moses anointed Joshua as king,
one sees that Moses performed several actions to appoint Joshua as king,
"he laid his hands upon him,"
until that "Moses set up an interpreter for Joshua so that he would expound in his lifetime, so that Israel would not say, 'In the lifetime of your teacher you did not have the right to raise your head,'"
and therefore the day of Moses' death was "a Sabbath of Diuzegi,"
meaning that Moses did not want to wait until after his death for Israel to see that Joshua is the king,
rather he wanted to demonstrate it to Israel already in his lifetime, and nevertheless one does not find that Moses anointed Joshua,
whereas anointing is indeed the most essential matter in the coronation of a king. Therefore it is reasonable to say that Joshua was not anointed.
A question was asked about this,
and as discussed many times, it is not enough that one only ask a question and remain with it,
rather one must toil and find an answer. It must be not only "I have toiled" and ask a question,
but also "and I have found" find an answer.
It was asked,
that in the Mechilta on Parshat Beshalach it is explicitly stated "Place in the ears of Joshua, indicating that on that day Joshua was anointed"! Which at first glance is a tremendous difficulty on what was discussed.
In truth, however, the one who asked the question hit the mark and brought
(incidentally)
in the continuation of his note a Rambam with which the question is resolved.
The Rambam writes in the Laws of Kings "One does not appoint a king initially except by a court of seventy elders and by a prophet,
like Joshua whom Moses our teacher and his court appointed."
Based on this, a difficulty arises on the aforementioned Mechilta:
"On that day Joshua was anointed"
(which the Mechilta says on the verse "Place in the ears of Joshua")
it refers immediately in the continuation to the war with Amalek,
which was before the giving of the Torah;
וואס זי איז געווען פאר מתן תורה;
but the seventy elders in the generation of Moses,
who appointed
(together with Moses)
Joshua as king
(as the Rambam writes)
were appointed only a time after this, a great amount of time after this,
as related in Parshat Beha'alotecha,
or at least after Jethro came to Moses and gave the advice to appoint judges and officers,
which according to one opinion was after the giving of the Torah,
and also according to the second opinion
(that "Jethro came before the giving of the Torah")
the appointment of the officers was
(after the arrival of Jethro which was)
after the war with Amalek and after the saying of the Holy One, blessed be He, to Moses "Place in the ears of Joshua"
(about which the Mechilta says "indicating that on that day Joshua was anointed")
now if one were to learn that the Mechilta speaks about the anointing of Joshua as king,
how will it accord with the Rambam that the appointment of Joshua as king was by Moses and his court,
whereas his court was established only a time after this?!
From this itself it is forced that the anointing of Joshua mentioned in the Mechilta is a different matter,
not the same as the anointing of a king
(as follows).
And in addition there are further questions on the Mechilta which compel one to say thus:
The anointing of Joshua
(as it states in the Mechilta)
was immediately after the war with Amalek,
at which time Moses was the leader of the Jews. And at that time,
and even for a long period of time after this,
there was generally no rationale that Joshua would be his successor:
Firstly, this was before the entire decree that Moses would not bring the Jews into the Land of Israel. The decree occurred only almost 40 years later;
ערשטנס איז דאס געווען פאר דער גאנצער גזירה אז משה וועט ניט אריינברענגען די אידן אין ארץ ישראל. די גזירה איז געווארן ערשט כמעט מיט 40 יאר שפעטער;
and secondly, Moses thought that his sons would be his successors,
until the Almighty told him in the fortieth year
(after the decree)
that Joshua
(and not his sons)
would be his successor, "since Moses heard that the Omnipresent said, 'Give the inheritance of Zelophehad to his daughters,'
he said, 'The time has come for me to claim my own need, that my sons should inherit my greatness.'
The Holy One, blessed be He, said to him, 'It did not arise in My thought,
Joshua is worthy to receive the reward of his service, for he did not depart from the tent,'
and "he did not depart from the tent" was also after the Giving of the Torah.
Now how can one say that the anointing of Joshua immediately after the war with Amalek,
as it states in the Mechilta, is a matter of the anointing of a king,
to appoint Joshua as king?!
Also:
The entire matter of anointing a king with the anointing oil was initiated with King Saul
(whom the prophet Samuel anointed).
And the primary matter of anointing with the anointing oil,
anointing with a horn, was only with David.
And furthermore:
The entire matter of the anointing oil was only innovated with the Tabernacle,
which came after the Giving of the Torah.
So how can one say that they anointed Joshua as king,
which is an anointing with the anointing oil,
immediately after the war with Amalek,
before the Giving of the Torah?!
With several more questions on the Mechilta which compel that the anointing about which the Mechilta speaks is an entirely different matter.
And the explanation:
The anointing of Joshua mentioned in the Mechilta was not a physical anointing for kingship with the anointing oil,
but rather a spiritual anointing, anointing in the sense of greatness.
Even if one wishes to say that from the plain meaning of the language of the Mechilta it implies that it was a physical anointing with oil, this is anointing connected with a different matter
(not the anointing of a king).
As we find elsewhere anointing with oil connected with other matters. For example, in our portion, "And Jacob set up a pillar... and he poured a libation upon it, and he poured oil upon it."
And similarly in the preceding portion, "And Jacob awoke early in the morning, and he took the stone which he had placed at his head, and he set it up as a pillar, and he poured oil upon its head," and this pouring of oil by Jacob is connected with the matter of Jacob, the heel,
which the hint refers to the matter of the oil. And based on this it is understood why Noah did not pour oil upon the altar which he built,
and also not Abraham and Isaac,
because the pouring of oil is specifically relevant to Jacob. And more.
Similarly, there is the matter of the anointing of the High Priest and the anointing of the Priest Anointed for War,
which anointings are
(anointing with the anointing oil,
but)
entirely not a matter of the anointing of a king.
And similarly regarding the anointing of Joshua mentioned in the Mechilta,
that it was entirely not connected with the anointing of a king, but rather for a different matter. And the explanation:
In the manner that there is a Priest Anointed for War in addition to the High Priest, who is anointed
(because the High Priest does not go out to war),
and the anointing of a Priest Anointed for War is an entirely different matter from the anointing of the High Priest,
simply, so too one can say regarding the anointing of Joshua
(as it states in the Mechilta)
that they anointed him to go out to the war of Amalek. But this anointing had entirely no connection to the anointing of a king,
because at that time Moses was the king,
as it is said, "And He was King in Jeshurun."
And based on this, another matter is understood:
In order to wage war with Amalek, there must be a king in Israel,
who is obligated in the war of Amalek.
They wished to connect this with the anointing of Joshua
(as it states in the Mechilta)
that this was as a king.
This, however, is entirely untenable,
because
(as above)
at the time of the war with Amalek in the time of Moses
(after the Exodus from Egypt)
the king was
(not Joshua, but) Moses,
as it is said, "And He was King in Jeshurun."
And that which Moses himself did not go out to the war of Amalek,
is because there is no necessity that the king himself should go out to the war of Amalek,
he can send a deputy for this. Moses sent Joshua as his deputy.
King Saul indeed went out himself to war,
but there is no necessity that every king must go out to war. And on the contrary, in the time of David, the men of David said "You shall no longer go out to war and you shall not extinguish the lamp of Israel."
And especially since Moses said to Joshua "Choose for us men and go out, fight against Amalek."
And may it be His will that from this speaking and learning about the laws of anointing and the laws of kings and their wars, this should come down into actual practice,
that "A king from the house of David shall arise etc. and he shall wage the wars of the L-rd etc. and he shall succeed etc.,"
and as it is stated in the Midrashim
(and on this in the Targum)
on the verse "War for the L-rd against Amalek from generation to generation,"
that this means from the generation of Moses and from the generation of Samuel
(and of Saul)
and from the generation of the Messiah,
in the true and complete redemption, speedily in our days, literally,
"And the kingdom shall be the L-rd's."
The explanation in Rashi's commentary:
The reason why Rashi focuses on the words "And he built him a house,"
is because the difficulty in the verse that Rashi comes to answer is in the words. Regarding all the other details that are stated in the verse
("And Jacob journeyed to Succoth etc. and for his cattle he made booths; therefore he called the name of the place Succoth")
there is no question;
איז ניטא קיין קשיא;
but the matter of "And he built him a house" is not understandable:
Jacob was on the way,
when the Almighty had commanded him "Return to the land of your fathers etc.,"
and Jacob fulfilled the command of the L-rd and went back to the land of his father's sojournings.
The question arises:
A) How is it that Jacob should build a house while he is on the way?!
When Abraham and Isaac were on the way for a period of time, we find that the verse says "And he pitched his tent"
(and the like),
for a tent is a temporary dwelling;
וואס אן אהל איז דאך א דירת עראי;
but how does Jacob come to build a house on the way?
B) What is the purpose that the Torah tells us "And he built him a house"? We do not find that the Torah tells anywhere regarding Abraham and Isaac that they built a house,
and the reason for this is because (A)
it is self-understood that they lived in a house
[and especially regarding Isaac it is stated* "And behold Isaac was sporting with Rebecca his wife,"
it is understood that this was in a manner of modesty,
in a house or in a tent], (B)
(as a five-year-old studying Scripture knows)
Torah is from the term instruction; it comes to teach something,
and consequently, the Torah has nothing to tell just so, that they built a house.
So why does the verse tell regarding Jacob that "And he built him a house"? Rashi answers "He stayed there eighteen months,"
which is a lengthy period,
a matter of permanence,
and therefore he built a house.
The necessity that Jacob stayed on the way eighteen months
(specifically),
Rashi says "Summer and winter and summer. Booths for summer, a house for winter, booths for summer."
Since the verse is precise to tell "And he built him a house,"
it means,
that the Torah intends to inform that Jacob's being in Succoth was in a manner of permanence. And since the text did not come to obscure but to explain,
one must say,
that the verse itself hints how long Jacob was in Succoth.
On this Rashi says that the words "Succoth, a house, Succoth" each hint to a period: Succoth for summer and a house for winter, and in this lies a hint,
that Jacob's stay in Succoth was during the three periods.
Rashi, however, does not intend to explain the words in the verse,
that "He journeyed to Succoth" was in the summer season,
"And he built him a house" in winter,
and "And for his cattle he made booths" in summer
(the second),
Because,
as discussed earlier
(section 243),
this is contrary to the plain meaning of the verses,
in the verse it is explicitly stated that "He made booths" was only "for his cattle,"
but for himself "And he built him a house";
אבער פאר זיך איז "ויבן לו בית";
and consequently,
immediately upon arriving in Succoth he did not live in a tent
("booths")
but "And he built him a house."
Rashi only intends to say,
that in addition to the simple explanation of the words,
since the verse wants to make known how Jacob established his place in Succoth
(and he built for himself a house),
and the text did not come to obscure etc.,
one must therefore say,
that the verse gives a hint to the time of his stay is in the words "Succoth Beit Succoth" there is a hint to three periods that Jacob was in Succoth:
"Succoth" hints to the summer season,
and "Beit" hints to the winter season. No. According to this explanation, the order in Rashi's commentary is also correct,
that he begins with eighteen months,
and only afterwards does Rashi say "summer and winter and summer Succoth etc." At first glance:
When one learns this Rashi at first glance,
that the proof in the verse for this explanation of Rashi is from the words "Succoth Beit Succoth," Rashi should have begun his commentary with this, that from "Succoth Beit Succoth" we know that Jacob was there "summer and winter and summer,"
which is eighteen months.
Furthermore:
At first glance, Rashi did not need to explain "eighteen months" at all; anyone can count for himself how many months there are in "summer and winter and summer"!
And according to the above, it is understood simply,
because Rashi comes to explain the words "and he built for himself a house,"
from which it is understood that Jacob stayed for an extended period of time in Succoth. And therefore,
first of all, Rashi says "he stayed there eighteen months,"
which is a long time.
However, if Rashi had begun with "summer and winter and summer," it is not clear how long the duration of time "summer and winter and summer" is; it could be only eight months:
the last month of summer,
six months of winter,
with the first month of the following summer.
And even though for eight months in one place it is also understandable why one would build a house, this is not entirely smooth. And especially since Jacob had to build a large house,
for his wives, his sons, and his maidservants etc.
Therefore Rashi immediately states at the beginning of his commentary,
that here there was a long duration of time, eighteen months;
אז דא איז געווען א שהיית זמן ארוך י"ח חדשים;
and only afterwards does Rashi bring the hint to this in the verse "summer and winter and summer Succoth etc."
In continuation of his explanation on "and he built for himself a house" that Jacob "stayed
(in Succoth)
eighteen months," Rashi stands on "and Jacob came in peace" and explains "whole in his body etc."
Thus there would be room to think,
that what the verse states "and Jacob came in peace" is connected to the deficiency that comes through traveling on a road
(in general),
and as Rashi explained above by Abraham;
וכפרש"י לעיל ביי אברהם;
But (in addition to the above (section 23) it is)
after Rashi says that already in Succoth there was a matter of permanence "and he built for himself a house,
he stayed there eighteen months" and there it does not yet say "and Jacob came in peace,"
it is forced from this,
that "and Jacob came in peace" is not connected to traveling on a road in general,
but rather to specific matters that were with Jacob,
from which he became "whole" only upon arriving in Shechem. And therefore Rashi does not count the matter that came to Jacob, that his bed was complete* and other completions that were with Jacob, because he did not receive them only when he came specifically to Shechem.
Therefore Rashi explains on it "whole in his body, that he was healed from his limping." And according to the one who is five years old for Scripture, there is no difficulty from what Rashi says on the verse "and the sun shone for him" that already then he was healed, because Rashi brings this matter from the Aggadic Midrash as a second explanation;
איז רש"י דערויף מפרש "שלם בגופו שנתרפא מצלעתו". און ביים בן חמש למקרא איז ניט קיין קשיא פון דעם וואס רש"י זאגט אויפן פסוק "ויזרח לו השמש" אז שוין דעמאלט איז ער נתרפא געווארן ווייל דער ענין ברענגט רש"י פון מדרש אגדה אלס צווייטער פירוש;
its simple meaning of "and the sun shone for him" is however "the language of people,"
and as the verse says "and the sun shone etc. and he was limping etc."
As this is also proven from that "therefore the children of Israel do not eat the sinew of the thigh vein etc." At first glance:
If one will say that Jacob was "limping on his thigh" only for a few hours
(and immediately when dawn rose and "the sun shone for him" he was healed)
how does it fit to make such a "commotion" of "therefore the children of Israel do not eat etc. to this day"?
Even more:
If one will learn that Jacob was healed immediately when the sun shone for him, it will turn out that no one saw that he was "limping on his thigh,"
because his wives, maidservants, and sons were on the other side of the stream,
and "Jacob was left alone."
It is entirely not simple to say,
that because of the few hours when Jacob was limping on his thigh which no one saw,
"Therefore the children of Israel do not eat [the sinew of the thigh] until this day"!
Therefore it is probable
(according to the simple interpretation)
to learn,
that Jacob was not immediately healed,
and his healing did not come in a miraculous manner,
but gradually in a natural manner. And this is what the verse says "And Jacob came whole" that only upon arriving in Shechem he "was healed from his limping."
And according to this it is simply understandable the storm of "Therefore the children of Israel do not eat":
When the sons of Jacob saw that for eighteen consecutive months Jacob went around in a manner of "limping on his thigh" a lame person, they took upon themselves that they shall not eat the sinew of the thigh etc.
Afterwards Rashi continues "whole in his property that nothing was lacking from all that gift",
which according to the simple interpretation this occurred only in Shechem. And therefore Rashi does not bring what is stated in the Midrash that "he returned it to him immediately",
because in the simple way of interpretation,
if such a great miracle had happened the verse would have had to tell it somewhere.
Therefore Rashi learns that the filling of the lack was in a natural manner. And this took eighteen months,
so,
that he became "whole in his property" upon arriving in Shechem.
And even though Jacob sent a very great multitude of his cattle to Esau of all kinds,
as it states earlier in the verse,
and as is simply understandable from this that the gift had an effect on Esau that "he embraced him etc. and kissed him" as a lover and friend,
this was certainly a very great multitude,
it is for a five-year-old studying Scripture no question how the lack was filled during eighteen months,
because in addition to the fact that he does not know exactly the calculation how much it needs to take and therefore he does not consider it a miracle, even if yes,
Rashi has already warned earlier,
that the flock of Jacob "were fruitful and multiplied more than other flocks",
therefore it is understandable that the filling of the lack was with more speed than usual.
However, the conclusion of Rashi's commentary "whole in his Torah that he did not forget his learning in the house of Laban" remains not understandable:
This was certainly immediately upon leaving the house of Laban,
so how can one say that only upon arriving in Shechem was Jacob "whole in his Torah"?
The answer simply is:
As discussed earlier
(section 20),
that since it says "whole" without specification,
it means that Jacob was "whole" in all his matters. Therefore:
a whole in his Torah Jacob indeed was already from before,
but the verse cannot say there that he was "whole",
because in his body and in his property he was not yet "whole" then.
Only upon arriving in Shechem did he become whole in all his matters not only in his Torah
(which was already from before),
but also in his body and in his property.
According to this that Jacob was "whole in his Torah" also before his coming to Shechem, it is also understandable what Rashi says "whole in his Torah that he did not forget his learning in the house of Laban",
apparently:
The completeness of the study of Torah is,
that it should continually increase and not only that one should not forget the previous
(as discussed earlier (section 20))?
Regarding "whole in his body" the completeness is that nothing should be lacking,
but not that it should increase,
because "any excess is considered as lacking."
Regarding "whole in his property" it is because since it is eighteen months since Jacob gave the gift to Esau,
during this time certainly more sheep and cattle of Jacob were added,
as above;
כנ"ל;
But regarding "whole in his Torah" is not the completeness that it should continually increase and not only that one should not forget the previous?
Rather, Rashi warns with this that he says "whole in his Torah that he did not forget his learning in the house of Laban":
Knowing how Jacob worked in the house of Laban by day and by night etc. it is understood that the very fact that Jacob did not forget his learning
(which he learned before this (that he went to Laban) in the tent of Shem and Eber)
in the house of Laban is a great wonder. And that "he did not forget his learning" was
(the wonder)
specifically in the house of Laban,
but afterwards Jacob indeed increased in Torah.
However, with Abraham, although being on the road diminished his study of Torah,
the Written Torah and the Oral Torah
(as Rashi interprets the verse "Because Abraham listened to My voice and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes, and My Torahs")
it does not come to the particular matter that was with Jacob,
that he was in the house of Laban. Therefore, specifically with Jacob it states the novelty "And Jacob came complete, complete in his Torah,
that he did not forget his learning in the house of Laban."
The lesson from Rashi:
The deeds of the fathers are a sign for the children:
When a Jew goes on the road during the time of exile in the diaspora with all the obstacles, delays, and confusions of exile,
but he goes and conducts himself as Jacob our father went and conducted himself,
he engages in refining the sparks in the world, he is assured that he will arrive complete,
whole "complete in his body,"
"complete in his property" and "complete in his Torah,"
Just as it was with Jacob our father,
"And Jacob came complete to the city of Shechem which is in the land of Canaan when he came from Padan Aram":
Even though he came from Padan Aram from Haran,
the burning anger of the Omnipresent,
and he was in the house of Laban,
and afterwards he encountered Esau and gave him a large gift,
and "a man wrestled with him,"
"and he limped on his thigh," nevertheless,
when Jacob came to the land of Israel
(the city of Shechem which is in the land of Canaan)
it is "And Jacob came complete,"
"complete in his body, that he was healed from his limping,
complete in his property, that nothing was lacking from all that gift,
complete in his Torah, that he did not forget his learning in the house of Laban."
The Jew argues:
Since he finds himself in exile,
he has the limitations, obstacles, and delays of exile,
to the extent that it affects his body,
that he is lame, etc.!
They tell him,
that the entire intention of the obstacles and delays in exile is "for the Lord your God tests you to know whether you love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul,"
and consequently the obstacles and delays must not hinder his service,
rather he must perform his service with greater vigor and strength. And since through performing the service during the time of exile one hastens even more the journey to the land of Israel in the true and complete redemption,
it is a certain thing that he will be complete,
complete in his body.
And likewise regarding being complete in his property:
He argues that he must make a livelihood,
he must have money,
he has all these confusions connected with it. And even if he already has money,
the Most High has implanted in him the nature that one who has two hundred wants four hundred,
and "one who loves silver will not be satisfied with silver," it is not his fault that he wants more money,
this is a nature that the Most High has implanted in him!
What will he repay the Most High for what he has received, a portion or two hundred? He wants first to receive four hundred and afterwards he will repay the Most High.
They tell him that he must now pray to the Most High for what He has given him until now.
And all these confusions of money are indeed "for the Lord your God tests you to know whether you love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul,"
and consequently this must not hinder him from performing his service. And then he is assured that he will be complete in his property.
And likewise regarding being complete in his Torah:
He argues that due to the confusions of exile and due to the confusions of livelihood with which he must occupy himself every day,
and with him it is a situation where "by day the heat consumed me and the frost by night, and my sleep fled from my eyes,"
he has no time to study Torah,
he will fulfill his obligation with one chapter in the morning and one chapter in the evening. And even "if the Lord grants him more,"
he is satisfied with adding only a little more time for studying Torah.
And when it comes to studying Chassidus, he leaves it for the Sabbath day. And on the Sabbath day itself, after he rests,
after his eating and drinking and sleeping on the Sabbath. Because on weekdays he has no time for this,
he is occupied with his business matters. And even the little time that remains for him, he uses it for studying the revealed part of Torah,
in order to know "the deed which they shall do" and those which they shall not do,
but not for studying Chassidus,
and certainly for studying Chassidus in depth he has no time!
What do you mean you do not have time for this?!
All the time that you have was created so that you should study Chassidus! Because "I was created to serve my Creator,"
and since you were born after the revelation of the teachings of Chassidus, you must use your time that was given to you to study Chassidus!
And as the Mitteler Rebbe maintained that one must study Chassidus extensively,
as is known from the several letters that he wrote about this,
also in the name of his father, the Alter Rebbe
(as it is already printed),
and as he also writes in his introduction to Derech Chaim,
until it is also stated in several maamarim and sichos.
And this the Mitteler Rebbe wrote in his generation,
even though at that time there was greater poverty among Jews than in all other generations,
greater than in the generation of the Alter Rebbe and in the generations after him!
All the more so now,
notwithstanding the confusions of the exile, one must simply study Chassidus.
And likewise, to do in spreading the wellsprings outward in general,
to cause that every Jew should study Chassidus.
He argues that he is not up to it. What does it mean that he will go speak to another that he should study Chassidus, when afterwards he locks himself in a room alone and looks into the mirror and sees who he is from the sole of his foot to the top of his head, it becomes light in his eyes,
in the language of "the abundance of the river,"
so what kind of a sayer and speaker is he to another when he knows his own situation?!
One says to him,
that the Rebbe, my father-in-law, the leader of our generation,
who is the head of the generation,
who includes in himself all the people of the generation,
similar to a head that includes in itself all the limbs,
knew about all these considerations,
and nevertheless he said that everyone must study Chassidus and also cause this for others.
He said in connection with his redemption that there must be "ten who sit and engage in Torah," as is known the maamar Chassidus that he said in connection with his redemption,
on "ten who sit and engage in Torah," and he brings in that maamar the Mishnah and the words of our Sages in the revealed part of Torah and explains it according to Chassidus. And he said that "not only me did the Holy One, blessed be He, redeem, etc.,"
but every Jew, even a Jew "who is called by the name Israel,"
a Jew who thinks that for him Judaism in Torah is no more than a name, that Jew was also redeemed, and consequently the maamar Chassidus of "ten who sit and engage in Torah" also applies to him,
that he must make sure that he studies Chassidus and in a manner of "ten who sit and engage in Torah,"
that is, he must also cause that others should sit and study Chassidus so that there should be "ten who sit and engage in Torah."
And regarding what he says that he is not up to it, it is known the story that the Rebbe, my father-in-law, told and later printed,
that the Rebbe, of blessed memory, was accustomed in the washing of the hands for a meal to pour three times on each hand,
and he said to someone that this practice has no relevance to you and one must be up to it, etc.
Chassidim performed a trick, and at the time that they heard about this, they all began to conduct themselves thus,
to wash the hands three times on each hand. It was indeed repeated that one must be up to it and one must have relevance to it,
but in practice they conducted themselves thus upon hearing the aforementioned story,
until it became the custom among everyone, even among young children simply,
and also among those who know nothing about the entire story.
He says that one must hold by it etc. but knowing the difficulty
(of his honorable holiness, my father-in-law, the Rebbe),
regarding whom it was "a good eye is blessed, for he gave of his bread to the poor,"
it is a certain thing that he did not tell about this entire matter and did not order it printed in order to prevent Jews from doing a good thing. And especially knowing that when Chassidim will hear such a thing,
which is a pleasant thing, they will immediately grab hold of it. Rather, certainly he told about it and ordered it printed so that one should conduct oneself thus,
although one must know that one must hold by it,
and as follows.
How is it that one should indeed conduct oneself thus
(pouring three times on each hand)
even though one holds
(yet)
not by it?
There is a second instruction that his honorable holiness, my father-in-law, the Rebbe says in the name of his father, the Rebbe
(the Rebbe Rashab)
of blessed memory,
נ"ע 156,
that now the service must be in a manner of "snatch and eat, snatch and drink":
when one hears about a good conduct and a good thing, one must immediately grab hold and do it!
Once there was a time when service had to be with order,
that one should first do the matters regarding which one holds and afterwards, when one becomes elevated to a higher level,
do that to which one is then relevant etc.;
טאן דאס צו וואס מ'איז דעמולט שייך וכו';
but now one need not wait until one will hold by a certain good conduct,
rather when one hears about it,
one must grab hold and do it immediately.
And this is also regarding the conduct of washing the hands for eating to pour three times on each hand:
just as one heard that the Rebbe of blessed memory conducted himself thus,
one immediately grabs hold and everyone conducts himself thus.
And as the Gemara tells regarding Rav Acha the son of Rava,
that when he heard that his teacher Rav Kahana said that one can fulfill the obligation with hadasim "even two and one
(two leaves on one stem and one leaf below that rises and rides over the two),"
"Rav Acha the son of Rava sought after two and one since it came from the mouth of Rav Kahana,"
even though this is only after the fact
(and initially one must have "three leaves on a single stem").
And so too in our case:
just as he heard that his Rebbe,
your Rebbe,
poured the washing of the hands three times on each hand,
he does it. Because it follows the head of the body,
and he is a part of the "body,"
and especially since he wants to be more of that "body." Until this becomes for him not merely a hiddur but an obligation and necessity.
That the Rebbe of blessed memory said that one must hold by it is as mentioned,
since his honorable holiness, the Rebbe, told about this very conduct and ordered it printed,
his intention was certainly that one should conduct oneself thus,
and since he says that one must hold by it,
it is a certain thing that one will afterwards come to hold by it,
and especially since the Rebbe gave a blessing of success regarding it,
that when it is only "stand ready, all of you," one receives a blessing of success in this,
consequently one will certainly come to it. This comes only with a change of order,
that first one conducts oneself thus and afterwards one comes to hold by it.
As the order in Torah is,
that there is no earlier and later in Torah, thus it becomes Torah from the term hora'ah in life,
that also in his conduct in life he conducts himself in a manner of no earlier and later,
that first he conducts himself thus and afterwards he comes to hold by that level.
And therefore,
that which he conducts himself thus
(even before he holds by it)
is only a change in time,
because certainly he will afterwards hold by it,
only he comes to it in a manner of no earlier and later.
This is a general instruction regarding involvement in all campaigns,
and in Torah and mitzvos in general,
and also in the matter of family purity,
"and I will sprinkle upon you pure water etc."
This is connected to "may your springs spread forth outward,"
the waters of the spring that purify in any amount. And just as a spring purifies,
so too the springs of the teachings of Chassidus purify.
Furthermore, the wellsprings of the teachings of Chassidus revive the dead,
that is, they not only purify from the impurity of a corpse,
the one who touches a corpse,
but they revive the corpse itself,
as our sages said on the verse "Your dead shall live, my corpse shall arise, awake and sing, you who dwell in the dust, for your dew is a dew of lights,"
and this is the aspect of "the dew of the bdellium,"
that "whoever engages in Torah, the dew of Torah revives him,"
and the aspect of the dew of Torah is the aspect of the secrets and the secrets of secrets of the Torah,
and this level in dew,
the dew of Torah,
the aspect of the dew of the bdellium,
is the dew with which the dead are destined to be revived,
the dew of life 168*.
And as explained, the difference between the equality of the dew of the bdellium and
(the essence)
the dew of the bdellium,
that the equality of the dew of the bdellium is the matter of the sprinkling of the water of purification
(which in the future will be from the tenth heifer)
which purifies one impure from a corpse
(only the one who touches a corpse),
"but in the future, for the actual resurrection of the dead, this will be through a revelation from the aspect of the essence of the dew of lights itself,"
the dew of the bdellium.
And may it be His will that very soon there should be "awake and sing, you who dwell in the dust" through the dew of life.
In this time, we must have a source and preparation in these matters that will be in the future, and this is
(in our case)
the matter of the mikveh that exists now.
And this is connected with the Melaveh Malkah associated with the mikveh that will be on this Motzaei Shabbat.
And the building and repair of this mikveh is a thing that should have been done a long time ago,
and in practice it was not done,
so now it was finally done.
And in connection with this, a Melaveh Malkah is being made on this Motzaei Shabbat. And this is connected with the present time on Shabbat,
the time of ratzon deratzon, because ratzon deratzon of Shabbat and the Melaveh Malkah on Motzaei Shabbat is the intermediary between Shabbat and Sunday:
ratzon deratzon is the intermediate part of Shabbat,
and the Melaveh Malkah on Motzaei Shabbat,
when one escorts the queen and the king
(as these matters are in this),
is the intermediate part of Sunday.
Therefore, one should now announce about the Melaveh Malkah.
The answer to those who ask why there are complaints and they say that this should have been done a long time ago and finally it was done now. Seemingly, this is a matter of the past,
so why are there complaints now?
This is because if it had been done a long time ago,
then now one could have added to it twofold,
because certainly one can always make the mikveh even better and even better.
And that which was finally done now was necessary in order for the mikveh to be proper.
And those who say what is the practical difference,
the women would go to the mikveh anyway because of the importance of the matter, it is known the story with the Rebbe
(the Maharash) of blessed memory,
that once he went to the mikveh in Rostov,
which was with all the embellishments,
and he saw that on the water were floating several small hairs
(hairs).
He then wrote a sharp letter to the person in charge of this,
that how could it be?!
There are indeed women who are not bothered by it. And there are women who, even if it bothers them, will still use the mikveh because they know the importance of the matter. But it could then be that even one single woman will refrain from going to the mikveh because of this,
or she will contemplate about this because of it,
and from this it will result that she will go a day late,
and it will be an immersion not at its proper time, so from this side it is worthwhile and necessary that there everything should be in perfection,
without any hairs in the water!
And from this it is understandable also in our case.
And of course,
that there is no justification,
as others want to derive from this,
that in this there is a merit for the women,
that although the situation is such,
they go to the mikveh!
Heaven forbid that because of this it should not be proper there!
I was written to several months ago that the mikveh would be completely ready in two or three weeks, such was the wording. In practice, it has already been since then two months or a little less
(I do not remember exactly),
and it is not yet finished,
and the situation is that I do not know if even in another two or three weeks it will be finished!
Until that which happened there happened!
The incident that happened there at the beginning of this week was approximately two months since they wrote to me that it would be finished in two or three weeks!
Regarding the woman with whom the incident happened, there is indeed a great merit to defend her, as it is related,
that despite what happened with her,
she smiles and laughs and speaks with joy and a good heart,
and she even strengthens other women that they should not be frightened by this and should not refrain from going to the mikvah with joy and a good heart!
(Missing). *
Of all the times I was at the mikvah, I only found one single time one of those responsible for what needs to be there!
And I was there on many days,
and at different times of the day,
earlier,
later,
and at the beginning of the day, at least my beginning of the day,
which is also before midday, and only one single time did I find there one of those responsible!
And this also
(that I found that person)
was in the last two weeks! That presumably that person appeared there because he wanted to ensure that I would not speak about this at a farbrengen!
I do not specify his name,
and I do not wish to touch anyone with this. I speak here only because of the greatness of the matter.
And the problem here is not the money and not the Melaveh Malkah; the problem is with the people who need to do this,
and in a complete manner,
complete in his body, complete in his finances, and complete in his Torah.
And if they do what they need to do,
there would be money and everything that is needed!
May it be His will that at least from now on they should do this properly and in completeness. And as explained in Shaar HaYichud VeHaEmunah, that at every single moment the world is created anew, literally; therefore, that which was until now is one world,
and from now on a new world begins,
therefore one can do this from now on in completeness.
And all matters connected with the mikvah should be in a manner of "dei vehoseir,"
as one interprets that when it is "vehoseir," then it is certainly "dei."
And the Almighty gives everything from His full, open, holy, and broad hand. It only requires the "stand ready, all of you" and making a vessel to receive from the hand of the Holy One, blessed be He.
One should now announce regarding the Melaveh Malkah. And one should receive there "dei vehoseir."
May it be His will that they draw in more Jewish women to conduct themselves according to family purity.
And through that which the women do in their matters,
it will also come to the men in their matters. And also that the women help the men in their matters. As this is regarding the commandment of Torah study,
that in addition to that which a woman needs to learn the laws that are necessary for her,
she also assists in the Torah study of her son and her husband,
and receives for this the reward "women, through what do they merit?
Through bringing their sons to the synagogue and through waiting for their husbands etc." For this reason, one says in connection with the birth of a daughter in Israel "for Torah, for the wedding canopy, and for good deeds,"
as is known the instruction of the Rebbe
(the Rebbe Rashab)
of blessed memory.
נ"ע 175.
May it be His will that all these matters be fulfilled among them,
and as mentioned,
they should also assist the sons,
as it was at the giving of the Torah,
that first was "thus shall you say to the house of Jacob, these are the women" and afterward "and tell the children of Israel, these are the men."
And very soon the verse "and I will sprinkle upon you pure water and you will be purified" will be fulfilled,
in the true and complete redemption through our righteous Mashiach,
and speedily in our days, literally.
Announce regarding the Melaveh Malkah.
An explanation of the teaching from the Zohar of our portion
(from this that specifically regarding Jacob and David it is written "the number of their years" "in the world")
will be understood according to what is said in Likkutei Torah beginning "and the pure one shall sprinkle upon the impure on the third day and on the seventh day" and what he indicates in the note. In Likkutei Torah he explains that "on the third day" is the aspect of Jacob,
whose attribute is the attribute of mercy,
Tiferet,
the third sefirah,
the central line. And in avodah this is Torah,
the central line. And "on the seventh day" is the aspect of David,
for "on the seventh day" is the aspect of Malchut,
the concept of King David. And in avodah this is the avodah of self-nullification.
And this
(that David is connected with self-nullification)
is one of the explanations of why David was a "fallen one"
(and needed to attain the years that Adam, the Patriarchs, and Joseph gave him),
because since his concept is self-nullification,
he has no independent existence of his own,
he is a "fallen one."
The intention, however, is not that there should be only self-nullification,
for the intention is that there should be avodah and that one should accomplish in the world. If there is only self-nullification,
then no avodah is possible, the concept of prayer is not applicable,
for he is indeed nullified,
so who will pray to God?!
He is not connected to Torah,
where a state of strength is relevant,
to the extent that the Torah should be called by his name,
so if he is nullified this cannot be. And he is not connected to fulfilling mitzvot,
for which one needs to be a master and a king over worldly matters with which one fulfills mitzvot,
and when he is nullified he is the opposite of a master over the world.
That is, the intention is not that there should be only self-nullification,
a "fallen one,"
for the intention is that one should exist and accomplish in the world,
"in the world,"
through fulfilling mitzvot with worldly matters,
for the existence of the world is a true existence. As explained in the discourses of the Rebbe Maharash
(as discussed recently),
that since one fulfills mitzvot with worldly matters,
and mitzvot are a true existence,
one must say that the world is a true existence,
consequently, when he acts in the world
(through the mitzvot)
he must be a true master over the world. Therefore, there cannot be only the concept of self-nullification.
Therefore it is said that the self-nullification must not be a simple self-nullification,
but a self-nullification that comes from and is connected with acceptance of the yoke of the Supreme One. For then he is not simply nullified in relation to everything and everyone,
for then he could accomplish nothing through his avodah,
but on the contrary, since the self-nullification comes from his acceptance of the yoke of the Supreme One,
it becomes "the beginning of avodah and its essence and its root,"
for since he is nullified to the Supreme One,
then when the Supreme One demands that in relation to the world he should be an existence, and a true existence with strength,
a master and king,
in order to be able to perform his avodah
(to pray,
to study Torah and to fulfill mitzvot)
he is an existence with strength,
a master and king,
and regarding him it is "the King said, uproot mountains,"
he leads the world,
with "the world."
As this was with David,
that he did not remain a "fallen one,"
but rather he received years and "King David was established in the world,"
as a king,
an existence with strength.
That is, in relation to the Supreme One he is nullified,
but in relation to the world he is an existence with strength and a master and king,
and leads the world which is a true existence
(because the Supreme One desires it so),
as above.
To the extent that he finds himself in the world and leads it
(through fulfilling mitzvot with worldly matters)
in a manner of being above from the outset:
it is not that he does not stand in the world,
but rather, while being in the world he stands above from the outset,
higher than the world.
He is completely nullified to the Supreme One,
"I was created to serve my Master,"
but since the Supreme One
(to whom he is nullified)
desires that he make a dwelling place for Him, blessed be He, in the lower realms,
he is an existence with strength in relation to the world,
and draws from "blessed is your Master,"
"to serve my Master,"
into "blessed is your Maker,"
in the world of Action.
From where does a Jew know how he must conduct himself in his service in the world as a master over the world? This is through Torah
(its aspect of Jacob),
which shows a Jew how he must conduct himself in all matters.
Also in Torah there are these two aspects mentioned above, (a)
he has acceptance of the yoke and self-nullification to the Most High, and (b)
from his acceptance of the yoke he becomes an entity with power:
As an introduction to the study of Torah there must be "and let my soul be like dust to all",
utter self-nullification,
his soul becomes in the manner of dust
(upon which one treads with a foot).
As this is also hinted in the name "Jacob"
(whose meaning is Torah):
"Jacob" is yud ekev. The yud indicates self-nullification,
the aspect of oil
(therefore with Jacob it was "and he poured oil").
And because he is nullified,
"and let my soul be like dust to all". And he comes to acceptance of the yoke and self-nullification to the Most High, this brings to "open my heart in Your Torah",
that he becomes a complete entity with power,
"open my heart",
in his study of Torah.
And since he extracts from Torah how to conduct himself in all matters in the world, the power in the study of Torah brings that when he goes out into the world he should stand with power,
and be there a master and king in order to engage with the matters of the world
(through the fulfillment of the commandments).
In order to be a master over Torah,
that the Torah should be called by his name, this is already a higher level which requires more preparation:
First he must study for rote learning,
then for in-depth study,
and with toil etc. until he comes to the level when Torah is called by his name.
But a master over the world is every Jew,
for every Jew as soon as he becomes bar mitzvah he becomes a master over the matters of the world, that he should use them to fulfill commandments. As with the commandment of tefillin:
he becomes a master over the physical parchment of the animal and over the ink and over all the details that are needed for tefillin,
that he uses this to fulfill a commandment of the Most High,
and brings about that from and with the matters of the world there should be "Who has sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us",
a joining and connection with the Most High.
And how does a Jew know what his conduct and service in the world should be as a master over the world? This is,
as said,
through Torah
(its aspect of Jacob).
And according to this it is understood why by Jacob and by David in the Zohar it says the term "in the world",
and by David it says "king in the world", because both of them bring out in service the aforementioned point that the service must be "in the world",
through the fact that a Jew is there a master and king and uses the matters of the world to do his service:
The aspect of David is David king of Israel lives and endures
(as the Gemara says in Rosh Hashanah),
and in service, that which a person is a king and master in the world to do there his service with matters
(which comes through acceptance of the yoke and self-nullification to the Most High),
that is, that the acceptance of the yoke and self-nullification to Him must descend into that a person should do his service in "the world" as a master over "the world". And this engagement in "the world" as a master there,
comes through the power of Torah,
its aspect of Jacob. Therefore it also says by Jacob "the world".
And may it be His will that from this "and the pure one shall sprinkle etc. on the third day"
(the aspect of Jacob)
we should soon actually come to "on the third day He will raise us up and we shall live before Him"
(as he explains in Likkutei Torah there),
which also refers to the third Holy Temple,
and there should be all three perfections:
the perfection of the Torah,
the perfection of the people and the perfection of the land,
"the land which etc. the eyes of the Lord your God are always upon it from the beginning of the year to the end of the year",
and in a manner that one sits and lives there in tranquility,
as Jacob requested
(as mentioned in the portion which will soon be read for Minchah)
"and Jacob dwelt in the land of his father's sojournings in the land of Canaan, and he dwelt,
Jacob sought to dwell in tranquility"
(which is the aspect of "and he dwelt"),
the dwelling in the land in tranquility comes down to Jews now,
because every Jew has "an inheritance of the congregation of Jacob",
that all Jews sit in tranquility in all their dwelling places,
similar to how it was in Egypt that "for all the children of Israel there was light in their dwelling places",
and every Jew wherever he finds himself,
also outside the land,
makes there the land of Israel
(according to the saying of the Tzemach Tzedek),
Until the redemption comes in its simple sense below ten handbreadths,
as the Rebbe Maharash said,
that one must and one wants to have Mashiach in actuality in its simple sense below ten handbreadths,
that it should be simply "a king will arise from the house of David, versed in Torah and occupied with commandments like David his father, etc.,
and he will compel all of Israel to walk in it and to strengthen its breaches,
and he will wage the wars of Hashem, etc., and will succeed,
and he will build the Temple in its place and gather the dispersed of Israel, etc.,
and he will repair the entire world to serve Hashem together, as it is said: 'Then I will turn to the peoples a clear language, to call all of them in the name of Hashem and to serve Him with one accord.'"
And speedily in our days, literally.
He began to sing "We Want Mashiach Now."
Afterwards he gave whiskey and pastries to R. Sh.M. shiyita and the bottle of whiskey to R. Y.P. shiyita for the Melaveh Malkah.
Afterwards he said:
Those who need to make a final blessing,
will certainly make a final blessing.
After the Minchah prayer he began to sing "He will build the Holy Temple, etc."
