English translation 1
It is a farbrengen
It is a farbrengen
(a gathering)
connected with Yud-Tes Kislev,
the day (festival)
of redemption
of the middle Rebbe.1
And before that —
the tenth of Kislev,
the birthday of the middle Rebbe,
2 at which time his mazal prevails,3
and also the day of his passing,1
at which time “all the toil of man that his soul toiled during his life” ascends to its root and source,
4 and becomes “revealed and shining in a manner of revelation from above to below,”
until this “effects5 salvations in the midst of the land,”
as the Alter Rebbe explains in Iggeres HaKodesh.6
And in this —
that the birthday and the day of passing of the middle Rebbe —
are on the same day
(the tenth of Kislev) —
there is a special matter:
One sees here openly the concept of “the Holy One, blessed be He, sits and completes the years of the righteous from day to day, from month to month,”1
that on the day he was born
(the tenth of Kislev)
on that very day he passed away.
As it was with the first Nasi,
the first faithful shepherd,
Moshe Rabbeinu,
as the Gemara7 says
(that the Holy One, blessed be He, sits and completes etc.)
regarding him,
and afterwards the Gemara says this regarding the years of the righteous in general.
But from the fact that in reality we see that not all righteous ones passed away on their birthday —
one must say,
that in this there are two types:
righteous ones regarding whom, in truth and inwardness with all force, there is also the Holy One, blessed be He, “completing the years of the righteous from day to day, from month to month,”
only that this is,
for whatever reason,
not brought down in actuality below in a revealed manner;
ניט אראפגעקומען בפועל למטה בגלוי;
and righteous ones regarding whom this is also brought down in actuality below in a revealed manner. And in this there is a special superiority.
And so it was with the middle Rebbe,
that with him the concept was brought down below in a revealed manner —
that he was born and passed away on the same day,
the tenth of Kislev.
It is that “the end follows the head,”8
beginning with the people of his generation,
and then “the words of the righteous endure forever,”
from the Nasi
(and he bore)
it is drawn until the end of all generations,
until regarding “deed is the main thing,”
and furthermore, the main point —
regarding those “who ‘instruct us from His ways and we will walk in His paths’ ‘nes’
(netzach, selah va’ed),”
10 which “
(every place that ‘netzach, selah va’ed’ is stated)
has no cessation.”11
As this is regarding the first Nasi,
Moshe Rabbeinu,
that he is a Nasi until the end of all generations,
so too is it regarding every Nasi,
who is called by this name,
that he is a Nasi not only over his generation,
but a Nasi over all the generations that follow.
And this is no contradiction to that which is said “one matter for a generation and not two matters for a generation”12 —
because we see that so it is regarding Moshe Rabbeinu,
that according to several opinions13 he was a king,
as it is stated14 “and He was in Yeshurun a king,”
which according to several interpretations15 refers to Moshe,
and nevertheless afterwards there was Yehoshua bin Nun,
and afterwards Shaul the king,
and afterwards David the king,
whose kingship is drawn until the end of all generations;16
וואס מלכות דוד ווערט נמשך עד סוף כל הדורות 16;
and together with this it is said that the leadership of Moshe is drawn until the end of all generations —
then just as the explanation regarding Moshe is,
so too is the explanation regarding all the Nesi’im,
that there is no contradiction that they are Nesi’im until the end of all generations to that which “one matter for a generation.”
Even if one would want to argue regarding Moshe Rabbeinu
(that he was not a king) —
but regarding David the king it is a certain thing,
according to all opinions,
that he was a king,
and his kingship is drawn until the end of all generations with all the force of kingship,
even though afterwards there were other kings and Nesi’im.
Parenthetical remark:
Based on this that “the essence of kingship is to David” and with him there will be kingship for him and his sons forever,
as the Rambam writes in Hilchos Melachim17 —
one will understand that which was discussed in the previous farbrengen in connection with the anointing of a king who is the son of a king,
that generally he does not need anointing,
but when “there was a dispute, they anoint him in order to remove the dispute and to make known to all that this one alone is king,”
as the Rambam writes in Hilchos Klei HaMikdash.18
It was explained19 that what the Rambam writes here also "to make known to all that He is the only King"
(unlike what he writes in Hilchos Melachim20 only the matter of "to remove dispute"),
because he speaks here
(in Hilchos Klei HaMikdash)
about the anointing oil with which only the kings of the House of David are anointed
(not the kings of Israel),
therefore he writes "to make known to all that He is the only King",
which applies only to the kings of the House of David,
and not to the kings of Israel,
because specifically the kingship of David is forever,
unlike whenever there was a king in Israel there was also a king from the House of David.
On this a question was asked:
Most of the time when there was a king from the House of David there was also a king of Israel,
and especially the kings that the Rambam enumerates in Hilchos Klei HaMikdash
(when he says "to make known to all that He is the only King"),
in actuality there was also a king of Israel —
so how can he say there itself "to make known to all that He is the only King"?
And furthermore —
the kings of Israel ruled over most Jews,
ten tribes,
unlike the kings of the House of David who ruled only over two tribes21, —
so how can one say about the kings of the House of David "to make known to all that He is the only King"?!
Rather, the explanation of this is,
as the Rambam himself writes in Hilchos Melachim,
that "the essence
(strength)
of kingship is to David",
and with him will be kingship for him and his sons forever —
which is the meaning of "the only King",
that with him alone is the essence and strength of kingship.
Thus ends the parenthetical statement.
And just as it was with King David,
that he was a king and this continues throughout all generations,
and certainly so regarding David Melech HaMoshiach —
so too is it regarding all Nesi'im,
who are called by this name
(Nasi)
with which a king is also called22,
including also the Nesi'im of Chabad,
that their Nesius is until the end of all generations.
And just as the explanation regarding King David
(as it corresponds to "one thing for a generation")
so too is the explanation regarding all Nesi'im.
What this means in general is,
that "one thing for a generation" is regarding the matter of "who will go out before them and who will come in before them"23,
but regarding other matters, the Nesius of each king and Nasi continues until the end of all generations.
And so too is it understood regarding the Nasi in question,
the Mitteler Rebbe —
that even though afterwards there was the Tzemach Tzedek and afterwards the other Nesi'im until the Nasi of our generation, His Holiness, my father-in-law, the Rebbe,
his Nesius continues until the end of all generations. As mentioned,
the words of the righteous endure forever,
including also his actions, blessings, and instructions,
and especially for those who "teach us from His ways and we will walk in His paths",
which has no interruption.
From this it is understood that when one stands on a day connected with Yud Tes Kislev,
the day of redemption of the Mitteler Rebbe,
the matter of "that which is occasioned by time" is —
the Mitteler Rebbe.
As this is in all matters of Torah and Mitzvos:
When a Jew asks what he must do each and every day of the year,
the Shulchan Aruch tells him that he must study Torah,
for the mitzvah of Talmud Torah is a constant obligation24,
and fulfill mitzvos. However, when a matter of "that which is occasioned by time" arrives,
the Shulchan Aruch tells him that then he must, first and foremost and especially, do that matter which is occasioned by time.
And so in our matter:
When a special day of Yud Tes Kislev arrives,
then there must be a special emphasis on the matter of the Mitteler Rebbe.
It is not the meaning that then one need not do the other matters of Torah and Mitzvos,
rather that the extra care25 on this day must be in the small part of the day,
in a manner of "the small that holds the large",
in which one occupies oneself with the matters of the Mitteler Rebbe.
Even though on this day one occupies oneself with other matters in Torah and mitzvos,
until even after the blessing of the Torah at the beginning of the day one learns entirely other matters in Torah:
first one learns the portion of Birkas Kohanim26,
then the Mishnah of Pe'ah27,
then Parshas HaKorbanos,
until the chapter "Eizehu Mekoman"28. And these matters in Torah come not only at the beginning of the day in time,
but rather the blessing of the Torah applies to them simply —
nevertheless, the main thing that one is extra careful about on this day,
is the matter that is occasioned by time.
Parenthetical statement:
Eizehu Mekoman
(which is said every morning)
contains several matters,
beginning from the level of plain meaning,
up to also secrets and mysteries of Torah;
ביז אויך סודות ורזי תורה;
in Eizehu Mekoman there is the inner dimension of Torah as it is in the revealed aspect of Torah. And the explanation:
It is known that the Written Torah and the Oral Torah are interincluded with each other —
in the Oral Torah there is the Written Torah,
as is simply seen that in the Oral Torah verses from the Written Torah are brought.
And in the Written Torah there is the Oral Torah.
Which superficially is not understood:
It is understood how there is the Written Torah in the Oral Torah,
but how is there the Oral Torah in the Written Torah —
if this is in the Written Torah,
then it is the Written Torah and not the Oral Torah?!
The explanation of this is:
The Rambam writes29 that the Torah was given with its explanation.
That is, the Written Torah was given together with its explanation,
the Oral Torah.
And the Written Torah itself compels that one must arrive at an explanation
(of the Oral Torah).
This is the Oral Torah that is in the Written Torah.
As Rabban Yochanan ben Zakkai said to the Sadducees30
(who wanted to accept only the Written Torah),
that the Written Torah itself compels that one must arrive at an explanation of the words of the Written Torah,
for which one needs the Oral Torah
(its explanation).
For example, regarding the commandment of tefillin,
concerning which "the entire Torah is compared to tefillin"31:
In the Written Torah it is written about laying tefillin,
but it does not state how many portions there should be in the tefillin. Rather, this is hinted at in the word "totafot",
and one must arrive at the Oral Torah32 to explain that there must be four portions.
Regarding this, it is stated in the Written Torah that the tefillin
(of the arm)
must be placed "al yadecha"33. Since in the Written Torah it says that one must place it "al yadecha" in the singular form
(not the plural form),
it is understood that one must place it only on one hand,
but it does not state in the Written Torah on which hand,
rather, by the fact that it says "al yadecha" in the singular, it itself compels that one must arrive at an explanation in the Oral Torah as to on which hand one must place the tefillin;
נאר דערמיט וואס עס שטייט "על ידכה" לשון יחיד איז אליין מכריח אז מ'דארף אנקומען צו א פירוש אין תושבע"פ אויף וועלכע יד מ'דארף לייגן די תפילין;
And from the fact that it is written in the Written Torah "yadecha" with a heh at the end
(not "yadecha" without),
the Oral Torah derives34 that one must place it "al yad keha"
(the weaker hand, i.e., the left).
For it is not stated in the Written Torah that one must place it on the weaker hand,
because if so, it would be the Written Torah and not the Oral Torah,
rather, in the Written Torah it says "yadecha" with a heh at the end,
whereas according to the rules of grammar it should stand without a heh —
which rule is also a part of the Oral Torah —
and it says "yadecha" in the singular,
from this the Oral Torah compels that one must place it "al yad keha"
(the left hand).
Here we see the concept of how the Oral Torah is included in the Written Torah.
And not merely in the manner of a hint in the Written Torah,
but also in the plain meaning of the Written Torah one sees how it compels that there is an explanation in the Oral Torah.
Just as this is regarding the Written Torah and the Oral Torah, that they are interincluded with each other, so too is this regarding the revealed aspect of Torah and the inner dimension of Torah,
that they are interincluded with each other.
And one of the places in the revealed aspect of Torah where one sees that it is included from the inner dimension of Torah —
is in the chapter Eizehu Mekoman:
One of the reasons35 why it was chosen that every morning one should specifically say the chapter of Eizehu Mekoman from among the 524 chapters in the Talmud
(as is known the allusions and gematriot regarding this)36,
is because in this chapter there are no disputes.
This is the concept of the inner dimension of Torah,
that there is no dispute there. As the Alter Rebbe explains in Iggeret HaKodesh37 the statement of the Zohar38 that this book of the Zohar,
which is the Tree of Life,
"there is no difficulty there...
and no dispute" with all the expressions that he brings there.
From this we see,
how in the revealed aspect of Torah,
the chapter Eizehu Mekoman,
the inner dimension of Torah is included —
because the chapter Eizehu Mekoman is an entire chapter in the revealed aspect of Torah where there is no dispute.
And not the interpretation that in these matters which are discussed in this chapter there is no dispute,
but rather in these matters there are indeed disputes in other places,
like the matter that is stated at the end of the chapter39 that the Paschal lamb is only eaten until midnight,
there is a dispute about this in a Mishnah40 whether this means until midnight,
or until the break of dawn —
but in the chapter "Eizehu Mekoman" none of these disputes are brought. *40
Because in this chapter there is the clarification and elevation of the revealed aspect of Torah into the inner dimension of Torah.
Regarding our matter,
after the parenthetical statement,
we see that even though a special day is connected with a matter that is time-dependent,
they begin the start of the day before prayer with the study of Torah in seemingly other matters —
the section of the Priestly Blessing,
until "Eizehu Mekoman."
And seemingly, according to the above, this is not understood:
On a special day when there is a time-dependent matter, they should have begun the day with studying matters in Torah connected to that time-dependent matter,
and not about other matters which are studied every day equally?
And even though they recited the blessing over the Torah,
they could immediately after the blessing over the Torah study the time-dependent matter,
instead of the matters which are studied every day
(the section of the Priestly Blessing, etc.).
From this very fact that they study these matters
(the section of the Priestly Blessing until "Eizehu Mekoman")
also on a special day when there is a time-dependent matter —
compels us to say,
that these matters in Torah are also connected with the time-dependent matter of this day.
That is, that which they study "Eizehu Mekoman" and the like on a particular day is not because they study it every day,
and because this day falls between the day before it and the day after it,
but rather because this is relevant specifically to this day.
That is, that the study of "Eizehu Mekoman"
(and the like)
is not comparable on one day to a second day.
And consequently, when a special day comes when there is a time-dependent matter,
the study of "Eizehu Mekoman" on this day is connected with the time-dependent matter.
For example, as this is simply in the revealed aspect regarding offerings:
Every day in the morning
(at the beginning of the day)
and in the evening
(at the end of the day)
they offered the daily burnt-offering,
because this is the offering with which they begin the service every day,
and with which they conclude the service every day,
"the completion of all the offerings."41 Corresponding to this, the morning daily offering and the afternoon daily offering are the morning prayer and the afternoon prayer,
and especially the bedtime Shema
(with which they conclude the day).
When the Sabbath day or a Festival day came, when they also offered an additional offering,
the special offering of this day —
they did not begin with the offering of the additional offering,
but rather at that time too they first offered the daily burnt-offering and afterwards the special offering of this day.
Because that which they offered a daily burnt-offering also on Shabbat and Yom Tov at the beginning of the day and at the end of the day,
is that although they do this every day,
on the Sabbath day the daily burnt-offering is a Sabbath daily burnt-offering,
and on Yom Tov it is a Yom Tov daily burnt-offering. And the daily burnt-offering on the Sabbath day is not comparable to the daily burnt-offering on other days.
Those who seek pretexts to raise difficulties can ask: Where is this stated in the revealed aspect? It is stated in the Torah,
as is understood from Rashi on the Torah,
even for a child of five years of age studying Scripture:
When the Torah relates about the offerings of the princes during the days of the inauguration,
on the first day Nachshon ben Aminadav of the tribe of Yehudah,
on the second day Netanel ben Tzuar of the tribe of Yissachar, etc.,
the Torah enumerates for each prince individually in detail the offerings which he brought,
even though each prince brought the same offerings.
And the reason for this is understood even for a child of five years of age studying Scripture,
that this is because each prince had different intentions and allusions in this,
as is suited to the special matter of his tribe. As Rashi explains
(regarding the prince on the second day)
43 the various allusions to which the offerings, etc., allude. And therefore the verse must enumerate for each prince individually
(twelve times)
the offerings which he offered,
because in truth they are
(in spirituality and the intention of the matters)
different offerings.44
So too in our case:
The fact that one learns "Where are their places?" and the like on a special day when there is a matter of "dependent on time" is connected to that matter of "dependent on time,"
and this is different from studying this on another day.
With this comes another matter:
Just as it is said regarding the daily offering of Yom Kippur and Shabbat,
that the day of Yom Kippur is beneficial for all the sacrifices of that day45,
including the daily offering
(which is offered every day),
meaning that it brings about an elevation also in the daily offering —
so too regarding a special day when there is a matter of "dependent on time": the day itself and the matter of "dependent on time" is beneficial for all other matters of that day
(including the matters that are studied every day).
And so too regarding Yud Tes Kislev:
The essence of this day is the matter of "dependent on time" —
connected with the redemption of the Mitteler Rebbe. And this is beneficial for all matters on this day
(including the regular matters that are done every day).
Therefore, on this day one must speak primarily about Yud Tes Kislev and the Mitteler Rebbe.
And the main thing is the deed:
Standing on a day that follows Yud Tes Kislev,
one must speak and accept good resolutions with the intent to fulfill them in practice in connection with the matters of the Mitteler Rebbe.
And especially when there is a situation of "when the heads of the people gather, the tribes of Israel together"46,
that several tens of Israel have gathered together —
then one must accept good resolutions even more,
as explained in the maamar "Hachalotzu"47,
that when one accepts resolutions in public, it has more force and it is more certain that it will come out in practice.
And especially since it is the Shabbat day,
which comes
(in the fixed calendar of this year)
immediately following Yud Tes Kislev and Tes Kislev —
then it is even more a fitting time to accept good resolutions in connection with Tes and Yud Tes Kislev,
which, as discussed above,
that Tes and Yud Tes Kislev are pure days connected with the Mitteler Rebbe:
Yud Tes Kislev —
the day of his redemption,
and Tes Kislev the day of his birth and the day of his passing. And especially according to the account of my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe48, that the news of the redemption came on Shabbat Tes Kislev at mincha time when my revered father-in-law, the Mitteler Rebbe, said the Chassidic discourse beginning "Atah Echad Ushmecha Echad,"
which also emphasizes that the redemption was not in a manner of "He performs wonders alone" —
"the master of the miracle does not recognize his miracle,"
49 but rather in a manner of "He works salvations in the midst of the earth" —
not only "You are One" but also "and Your Name is One."
Therefore this day gives even more power to accept good resolutions that will then be fulfilled in practice in connection with the matters of the Mitteler Rebbe. And then "one mitzvah brings another mitzvah,"
50 and one accepts good resolutions in all good matters,
and "he who has one hundred wants two hundred"51,
one adds more and more in this.
And regarding practical deed:
One of the matters of the Mitteler Rebbe was —
the revelation of the inner dimension of Torah in a manner of expansion, "Rechovot HaNahar"52,
connected with the sefirah of Binah52,
which corresponds to the Mitteler Rebbe,
as is known from the sicha of my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe53. And as one sees it in his maamarim,
and certainly when one studies them,
even according to our comprehension, people of our stature,
that he explains Chassidus
(the inner dimension of Torah,
which in our generation was revealed in the teachings of Chassidus)
in a manner of expansion,
"Rechovot HaNahar." In addition to the fact that the entirety of Chabad Chassidus is in a manner of "they shall be sustained" from it.54
From this, in simple terms, the lesson is —
that one should study Chassidus,
the inner dimension of Torah in a manner of expansion. And from this —
the study of Torah in general in a manner of expansion.
And especially in these days,
following Tes and Yud Tes Kislev.
And then this should be drawn into the study of Torah throughout the entire year,
with the power that one receives from Tes and Yud Tes Kislev. And analogous to how it is regarding Rosh Hashanah,
that from it one receives power for the service throughout the entire year55. That in the matters of the Mitteler Rebbe
(and in our case —
the inner dimension of Torah with expansion)
is Tes Kislev the "Rosh Hashanah"
(which gives power for the service throughout the entire year).
And analogous to how it is regarding the festival of Pesach,
that in the matter of "remembrance of the Exodus from Egypt" it is the "Rosh Hashanah,"
"Rosh Hashanah for the festivals"56 etc.
And from the study of Torah,
and especially the inner dimension of Torah in a manner of expansion —
is "He looked into the Torah and created the world" 57 —
it comes down to this, that the manner of conduct of Jews in the world is in a manner of expansion,
"and I shall walk in a broad place" 58,
so that one does not fall and become affected by gentileness,
but rather goes with expansion,
and one has the private redemption —
as per the instruction from the redemption of the Mitteler Rebbe —
from all matters,
so that it becomes "and I shall walk in a broad place".
And from the private redemption of each and every one, one comes to the general redemption of the entirety of the Jewish people,
And one goes in a manner of "and I shall walk in a broad place" in a good and broad land,
the completeness of the land,
and in a manner of expansion —
"Hashem your G-d will expand your border",
59 also the land of the Kenite, Kenizzite, and Kadmonite 60,
And one has the completeness of the people,
in a manner of expansion,
until "it is beyond number". 61
And the completeness of the Torah in a manner of expansion,
in the true and complete redemption,
speedily in our days, literally,
and with joy and a good heart.
There must also be a lesson from the specific determination of the tenth of Kislev,
"the tenth shall be holy" 62,
in this year,
in which weekly portion it occurs,
for this too is an essential matter.
In the determination of this year, the tenth of Kislev falls on the sixth day of the portion Vayetze. And the sixth day has a specific connection to Shabbat,
because all the matters of the days before Shabbat are elevated in a manner of "and they were completed" on this Shabbat 63,
and all the more so is this regarding the matters of Erev Shabbat, literally.
And particularly according to the text of the prayer in the custom of Chabad,
and so too is the custom in other communities,
that the Kaddish recited after "Mizmor Shir L'Yom HaShabbat",
which is already on Shabbat night,
belongs to the one who said Kaddish on the sixth day. 64
And the matter of Kaddish is connected to passing,
also with the passing of the Mitteler Rebbe;
אויך מיט דער הסתלקות פון דעם מיטעלן רבי'ן;
And also with the matter of the redemption of the Mitteler Rebbe:
In Kaddish one says "Yitgadal v'yitkadash sh'mei rabba",
meaning, not only yitkadash,
but also yitgadal. And this too is the matter of redemption
(of a tzaddik) —
as the language of the verse
(in Yechezkel 65)
"and I will be magnified and I will be sanctified and I will be known before the eyes of many nations, and they will know that I am Hashem",
and as explained in Shaar HaYichud VeHaEmunah 66,
that the matter that the Holy One, blessed be He, partnered the attribute of mercy in the creation of the world,
the revelation of the Name Havayah —
"that is the revelation of G-dliness through tzaddikim and signs and wonders that are in the Torah",
which in our matter is the redemption of the Mitteler Rebbe,
which was not in a manner of "to the One who alone does wonders" —
the master of the miracle does not recognize his miracle,
but rather that everyone saw it in the world,
also gentiles —
the matter of "and I will be magnified and I will be sanctified etc.".
The matter of the portion Vayetze,
"And Yaakov left Be'er Sheva —
and went to Charan",
is the master of the redemption from the well 67,
that this refers to the general descent of the soul into the body:
The soul goes out from the land of the dwelling of the forefathers 68,
and descends into "Charan",
"the burning anger of the Omnipresent". 69 And this is the exile of the general descent of the soul into the body,
and within this itself —
there is the descent into exile, literally.
And the intention in this is —
that there should be "and I will bring you back to this land",
70 until "and I return in peace to my father's house and Hashem will be my G-d",
71 that one should come to a higher ascent than before the descent and the departure.
Where it speaks practically in the portion about the beginning of Yaakov's return to the Land of Israel —
this is from the sixth and onward in the portion,
the Torah portion of the tenth of Kislev
(in the determination of this year).
There it tells how Yaakov left Lavan,
from Charan,
and went to the Land of Israel,
and he went not as he came to Charan,
"with my staff I crossed the Jordan —
I had no silver nor gold nor cattle, only my staff alone",
72 rather he went with his wives and his sons and his camels and his donkeys, with an abundance of oxen and livestock etc.,
until an exceedingly great abundance,
as it is written 73 "and the man spread out exceedingly exceedingly, and he had many flocks and maidservants and servants and camels and donkeys" 74
(as it also states regarding Yitzchak 75).
That is, that after the descent into Charan, Yaakov had a higher ascent,
higher than he was previously in the Land of Israel
(before the descent).
Afterwards one comes to the end of the parshah,
from the seventh aliyah until the end of the sedrah,
the Chumash portion of this Shabbos,
which is "their beginning is embedded in their end and their end in their beginning"76 —
the beginning of the parshah,
"And Yaakov departed,"
the descent into Charan,
is connected with the end of the parshah,
where Yaakov is in the process of returning to Eretz Yisrael,
the purpose of the descent —
that there it is written how Yaakov takes leave of Lavan,
just before he returns to Eretz Yisrael:
"And Lavan arose early in the morning and kissed his sons and his daughters and blessed them, and Yaakov went on his way, and angels of Elokim met him. And Yaakov said when he saw them, 'This is a camp of Elokim,' and he called the name of that place Machanayim."77
And in this there is a wondrous matter and lesson,
but,
as has been discussed many times,
one passes over it like water,
not stopping upon this wondrous matter,
which is found in these verses not merely as a hint,
but in the plain meaning of the verses!
The explanation:
On "and angels of Elokim met him"
(at the time Yaakov was going from Charan to Eretz Yisrael)
Rashi explains:
"Angels of Eretz Yisrael came toward him to escort him to the land."
And this is indeed a wondrous matter:
Even before "and angels of Elokim met him —
angels of Eretz Yisrael came toward him to escort him to the land,"
Yaakov had with him angels of the diaspora
(as Rashi explains on the subsequent verse),
and furthermore he also had the promise from the Most High "And behold, I am with you and will guard you wherever you go,"
78 "And I was with you,"
79 Yaakov then did not need to receive the angels of Eretz Yisrael so that they should guard him. Additionally, the Most High had said to Lavan "Beware lest you speak with Yaakov from good to bad,"
80 until "and he kissed
(Lavan)
his sons and his daughters and blessed them" —
Yaakov had nothing to fear from Lavan, and on the contrary "and he kissed,"
for a kiss indicates great love,
such love that cannot be expressed through speech and the like,
only through a kiss.81
Nevertheless, afterwards there was "and angels of Elokim met him —
angels of Eretz Yisrael came toward him to escort him to the land":
Notwithstanding the entire turmoil regarding leaving Eretz Yisrael for the diaspora,
with all its details etc. —
the angels of Eretz Yisrael went out from Eretz Yisrael into the diaspora in order to give honor to Yaakov,
"to escort him to the land,"
and not for the sake of protection,
but for the honor of Yaakov!
And from this there is a wondrous lesson regarding the greatness of a Jew,
and a lesson that Rashi brings out in the plain meaning even for a five-year-old studying Scripture:
Even when a Jew finds himself in exile,
and in the exile itself —
in the diaspora,
he is told,
that not only does he have nothing to be impressed by from exile and from the nations,
and "Behold, He neither slumbers nor sleeps, the Guardian of Israel, Hashem is your guardian, Hashem is your shadow upon your right hand,"
82 for "And kings shall be your nursemaids and their princesses your wet nurses"83
(even during the time of exile84),
there is the "and he kissed
(Lavan)
his sons and his daughters and blessed them,"
and the Jew has thereby angels of the diaspora,
and also has the promise that "Behold, I am with you and will guard you wherever you go" —
but moreover:
Angels of Eretz Yisrael come out from Eretz Yisrael to the Jew in the diaspora in order to accompany him and give him honor!
That is, not only does he have nothing to be impressed by from exile and the nations,
but the very fact that he is not impressed by them could nevertheless be in an exilic manner,
in a diaspora manner,
and especially as one knows in his soul how exile affects him —
he is told that in the diaspora,
in exile,
he has Eretz Yisrael,
he has the redemption!
The Most High sends out His angels,
His emissaries
(according to the simple interpretation of "angel")
from Eretz Yisrael to the Jew in the diaspora not for the matter of protection,
which he has in any case,
but in order to accompany him and give him honor!
And the angels of the Land of Israel come to the Jew in the Diaspora in exile in a manner of "and angels of G-d met him",
which indicates a most sublime matter:
"And angels of G-d met him" simply means that the angels encountered him unexpectedly from his side.
Similar to what is stated at the beginning of the portion "and he encountered the place",
because "the earth jumped for him" and he encountered the place —
unexpectedly.
That is, "met" indicates a matter that comes from Above not through the service of man,
a level of arousal from Above that arousal from below does not reach there.
And based on this it is resolved why Jacob did not pray that the angels of the Land of Israel should come to accompany him,
for seemingly:
Jacob prayed for everything,
as stated "if G-d will be with me and guard me on this way etc. and give me etc. and I return in peace etc.",
so if he knew that it could be that angels of the Land of Israel should come to escort him,
why did he not pray for this?
The only explanation for this is,
that Jacob knew that to this matter one cannot attain through the service of man,
because it comes through an arousal from Above from a place that arousal from below does not reach there,
in a manner of "and angels of G-d met him".
There is a level of a free gift that comes from Above but one can pray for it,
similar to "and I beseeched the L-rd",
which was a free gift but it came through the prayer of Moses;
89 וואס איז געווען א מתנת חנם אבער ס'איז געקומען ע"י תפלת משה 90;
however here it is about a drawing down from Above that one cannot pray for,
because it comes from a level that is entirely above the service and prayer of man.
And from this level it is drawn down to every Jew wherever he finds himself in the Diaspora in the time of exile —
that there it becomes "and angels of G-d met him —
angels of the Land of Israel came toward him to escort him to the Land"!
And from that which was in Jacob our father,
it is drawn down,
through Moses our teacher,
who "the Torah that Moses commanded us is an inheritance of the congregation of Jacob",
to every Jew until the end of all generations.
And it is known that all matters of the three Patriarchs pertain to every Jew. For this is the difference between the tribes and the Patriarchs:
Not every Jew has a connection —
to every tribe,
rather each one ascends in his own path.
However "in the life of the Patriarchs",
which "we call Patriarchs only the three",
"must be in every person",
because every Jew has a connection to all three Patriarchs.
And the connection to Jacob is even greater than to the other Patriarchs:
From Abraham —
Ishmael came out from him,
and from Isaac —
Esau came out from him,
therefore when it is transmitted to every Jew,
the deeds of the fathers are a sign for the children,
that he too must have a safeguard that from him there should not come out etc.;
אז אויך ער דארף האבן א שמירה אז ס'זאל פון אים ניט זיין יצא ממנו כו';
however by Jacob his bed was complete,
which the meaning of this is not only that by him his bed was complete,
rather that the essence of Jacob is transmitted to every Jew in a manner of a complete bed.
And so too the matter of "and angels of G-d met him" which was in Jacob our father,
it is drawn down to every Jew until the end of all generations,
that in whatever situation and state he finds himself,
even in the time of exile in the Diaspora —
angels of the Land of Israel meet him in order to escort him and give him honor.
Standing in the Diaspora in exile,
"the Land of Israel" comes to him.
Similar to the well-known saying of the Tzemach Tzedek "make here the Land of Israel". Only there it comes through the service of man,
"make here the Land of Israel",
however in our case it is given to a Jew from Above,
"and angels of G-d met him",
angels of the Land of Israel,
unexpectedly.
And this is the wondrous lesson that is derived from the portion of Vayeitzei,
and especially from the end of the portion
(the Torah portion lesson of the 10th of Kislev and of that Shabbat).
And this is a lesson also for a five-year-old studying Scripture
(since this is stated in Rashi on the Torah).
And even earlier —
for Jewish girls,
with whom one begins to teach even earlier,
because extra understanding was given to woman. —
And truly this is a lesson for children even younger than that,
for as is the custom of Israel, one tells them stories from the Torah,
including also this story.
And the instruction from this is told to them:
When a small Jewish child goes out into the street and sees there gentile children,
and when he counts them he sees that "you are the fewest of all peoples",
that Jews are much fewer than gentiles. And he thinks to himself,
that at the very least he must be careful that the gentile boy should not hit him,
and a Jewish girl —
that a gentile girl should not hit her.
They say to him and to her:
First of all you must know that wherever a Jewish child goes,
there is with him an angel of G-d,
and consequently he has nothing to fear from the gentile that he will hit him,
because he has an angel who guards him. And in addition he has the promise from the Almighty that He will guard him,
"Behold, He neither slumbers nor sleeps, the Guardian of Israel. Hashem is your guardian, Hashem is your shadow at your right hand". And consequently about hitting a Jew, G-d forbid,
one need not worry at all.
And furthermore you must know:
If you will only conduct yourself as our father Jacob conducted himself —
then it will be "and angels of G-d met him —
angels of the Land of Israel came toward him to escort him to the Land":
Wherever he finds himself in the diaspora during the time of exile —
he has the Land of Israel!
What, due to our many sins, needs to be explained even to Jews who are already bar-mitzvah,
such ones who think that it must be "do not provoke the nations",
and consequently one must be submissive to gentiles and to gentileness,
and when one goes to gentiles one feels like a poor person knocking on doors,
and one must come to the wealthy gentiles,
or to the gentileness of the wealthy, G-d forbid,
and therefore one must bow to them and dance for them etc.,
to such an extent that it is, G-d forbid, worthwhile to sacrifice Jewish lives for this!
In any case —
let this be an instruction for a five-year-old —
for Scripture,
and for children even younger than that,
to whom they already tell Torah stories at that time.
They tell them on this Shabbat,
that now their father or older brother or teacher etc. is learning the portion where it says "and angels of G-d met him". That when one merely prays to the Almighty,
not only does one have certain protection,
but furthermore —
angels of the Land of Israel come to escort him and give honor as he stands in the diaspora during the time of exile!
And with this one must live at this time,
as an instruction from the old Rebbe.
And from that which one learns about this in Torah,
and one lives with it, is
(The Holy One, blessed be He, looked into the Torah and created the world,)
a person looks into the Torah and sustains the world —
it becomes thus drawn into the world literally:
That even when a Jew finds himself in the time of exile in the diaspora,
and even if it appears to him that he lacks "and kings shall be your foster fathers and their queens your nursing mothers" —
they say to him,
that about this he certainly has nothing to worry,
and it can even be furthermore,
that he should have angels of the Land of Israel while being in the diaspora during the time of exile,
as it was by Jacob.
And therefore Jacob called the place by the name "Machanayim":
"And Jacob said when he saw them, 'This is a camp of G-d,' and he called the name of that place Machanayim",
as Rashi explains:
"Machanayim —
two camps,
that of the diaspora which came with him until here,
and that of the Land of Israel which came toward him".
What the main novelty in the naming of the place Machanayim was, was on account of the angels of the Land of Israel who came toward him. Because the angels of the diaspora were with Jacob also until that time,
when he, however, came to this place,
the novelty occurred that angels of the Land of Israel also came to him,
therefore he called the place Machanayim.
It turns out that the main novelty of the conclusion of the portion, —
"and he called the name of that place Machanayim",
is the matter that to Jacob in the diaspora come the angels of the Land of Israel to escort him.
And this has an effect not only on Jacob,
but on the world and those who are found in the world,
as understood simply from "And he called the name of that place Mahanaim":
When one gives a name to a place,
it is so that the place should always be called by that name. So after Jacob left from there —
who was there to call the place Mahanaim? Certainly not Jacob and his sons and his maidservants and his horses and his camels etc.,
but the inhabitants of that place.
From this it is understood that the matter that the angels of the Land of Israel came to Jacob
(which is why he called the place by the name Mahanaim),
was revealed in the world,
to the extent that this became the name of the place with which the inhabitants of that place called the place,
after this that the angels of the Land of Israel came there to escort Jacob!
And this adds to the aforementioned lesson to every Jew,
that the fact that angels of the Land of Israel come to him in the diaspora during the time of exile,
is not only for his private intentions,
but also when he has dealings with a gentile,
the gentile hears it and the entire world hears the virtue of a Jew!
Even that "you are the fewest of all peoples",
a gentile and the entire world hear that "You have chosen us from all the nations etc. and exalted us above all tongues":
Not only "You have chosen us",
that Jews are the chosen people as a matter in itself,
and "a people that dwells alone",
but also "and exalted us above all tongues",
which exaltation of one thing over another can be said only when the two things are in one realm.
That is, that also in the realm of gentiles it is heard that "and exalted us above all tongues".
And this is the lesson from the end of the portion
(the Chumash lesson of the 10th of Kislev and this Shabbat)
to every single Jew,
until also —
for a child of five years of age for Scripture and even younger than that
(as above) —
that wherever he may find himself,
in the diaspora during the time of exile,
angels of the Land of Israel come to him,
and this is heard in the world and among the gentiles.
And they escort him until the Land of Israel,
to the extent that it becomes "And he sent messengers",
"actual angels",
that a Jew has the power to send these angels on his mission
[There is a dispute which angels Jacob sent,
whether the angels of the diaspora or the angels of the Land of Israel —
but in any case,
as Rashi says,
he certainly sent actual angels].
And the angels of the Land of Israel who come to the Jew in the diaspora during the time of exile,
escort him to the Land of Israel,
until the true and complete redemption.
And particularly since from the time of Jacob until now thousands of years have passed,
with bundled troubles of exile,
and still it has not come,
"and we have not been saved" —
one certainly enters into the true and complete redemption.
And this is also the connection of the Chumash lesson of the 10th of Kislev
(in this year)
with the 10th of Kislev,
the day of redemption of the middle Rebbe —
and since anything upon which the name redemption is placed has a connection,
the true and complete redemption
(which comes after the escort of the angels of the Land of Israel,
as above)
has a connection and relationship with the redemption of the middle Rebbe.
And all the more so and how much more so:
Even the private redemption of each individual,
"He redeemed my soul in peace",
is connected to the general redemption,
as explained in Iggeret HaKodesh,
how much more so the general redemption of the middle Rebbe.
And knowing this gives even more strength in carrying out the aforementioned lesson of the 10th of Kislev —
that one should study Chassidus,
and in general Torah,
in breadth,
"broad rivers". And especially the Torah of the middle Rebbe.
And very soon may one merit to go from the redemption of the 10th of Kislev to the true and complete redemption,
speedily in our actual days,
which is quicker,
with this nation,
immediately.
He commanded to sing and said the discourse beginning "He redeemed my soul in peace".
As usual,
we will learn a matter in Rashi's commentary on the weekly portion,
and in both ways —
both a matter which he explains that seemingly requires explanation;
סיי אן ענין וועלכער ער איז מפרש וואס איז לכאורה דורש ביאור;
and also a matter on which Rashi does not comment,
even though seemingly this is a difficulty in the plain meaning of the verse,
And about this a matter in the notes of my father on the weekly portion.
Just as this gathering is connected with the middle Rebbe,
who elaborates in several places —
beginning from Torat Chayim immediately at its start in Parshat Bereishit,
and particularly in Parshat Noach,
regarding the order of the three worlds "Akudim, Nekudim, and Berudim",
which is a verse in our parshah —
we will focus on Rashi's commentary on the verse
[Chapter 31, verse 10]: Rashi
(in the second discourse beginning on the verse)
focuses on the word "Berudim" and explains:
"Its Targum is 'Ufetzichin'",
and then Rashi gives the translation "Bela'az" "in the language of this people" —
(the place where Rashi lived and wrote his commentary for a five-year-old studying Mikra),
or "Bile'az" —
not the Holy Tongue,
whose content is —
"speckled",
with spots.
Then Rashi explains what the spots looked like:
"A thread of white encircles its body around, and its spots are open and perforated from one to the other" or according to the second version:
"from one kind to another" —
this, however, has the same content as "from one to the other", except that it is a language of the verse, and Rashi also derives the matter from "its Targum",
because "Ufetzichin" also has the meaning of "open".
And Rashi then concludes:
"And I have no way to bring a proof from the Scripture".
The question immediately arises:
A) How does Rashi say "I have no way to bring a proof from the Scripture" —
when the word "Berudim" is explicitly stated in Zechariah?
In modern times, one does not need to be a scholar to find a verse,
there is a "concordance" for Tanach
(which was already printed many years ago);
(וואס איז שוין געדרוקט געווארן א סך יארן צוריק);
and one also does not need to be a great scholar to find the word "Berudim" —
it is brought there that the word "Berudim" —
it is brought there that the word "Berudim" appears in Zechariah
(twice) —
"And in the fourth chariot, speckled horses, etc.";
"ובמרכבה הרביעית סוסים ברודים גו'";
which comes in the context of the "four chariots" that Zechariah saw,
each with a different color —
"red horses, etc., black horses, etc.",
and the last was the appearance of "speckled".
So that Rashi does not bring that in our parshah itself the word "Berudim" appears again,
is no question. Because that is in the same matter,
and consequently one cannot bring a proof from it;
ובמילא קען מען פון דעם ניט ברענגען קיין ראי';
but why does Rashi not bring a proof from the verse in Zechariah?
B) Why does Rashi need to translate according to "its Targum", regarding which he says "I have no way to bring a proof from the Scripture" —
when one could translate "Berudim" from the word "Barad" (hail),
which is a common word in the Holy Tongue that a five-year-old knows
[Rashi wrote his commentary for one who knows the Holy Tongue],
and it appears several times in the Torah.
That is:
"Berudim" is the plural form of "Barad" —
like "Hadar",
"Hadurim";
הדורים;
"Nakod" and "Talua",
"Nekudim" and "Telu'im",
so that the "spots" looked like "hail". The question is even stronger:
We find that other literal commentators
(not only those whose commentary is allegorical),
such as the Radak,
indeed interpret it that way;
לערנען טאקע אזוי;
so why does Rashi specifically choose the interpretation of the Targum,
regarding which "I have no way to bring a proof from the Scripture"?
And the explanation must be understood simply,
so that one does not need to resort to the commentators of Rashi
(and as indeed we see that the commentators of Rashi do not address this).
One must also understand,
that there are questions in this matter that other literal commentators address,
and specifically Rashi passes over them:
A) The dream that Jacob saw "the he-goats that mounted the flock, streaked, speckled, and spotted" —
was indeed in continuation of the story of how Jacob received all those sheep of Laban that were born "streaked, speckled, and spotted". The question arises:
How does
(in this dream)
"spotted" come in? "Spotted" — who mentioned them?
Consequently, that which is not mentioned in the verse "speckled" is not a difficulty —
because one can answer that (a)
not always must the verse enumerate all types:
and especially since (b)
"speckled" is a detail within "spotted":
"striped" means
(according to Rashi's commentary)
"different in the place of their bending, the ankles of their hands and feet",
and "spotted and speckled" both refer to a matter of "mottled with spots",
the only difference is
whether they are fine spots or broad spots,
and therefore the verse does not repeat "speckled".
But it is entirely incomprehensible:
why does the verse here introduce a new matter
(which did not appear earlier) —
"grizzled"?
b) Regarding "and behold, the he-goats that mounted the flock" Rashi explains "the angels would bring them from the flock entrusted to Laban's hands to the flock in Jacob's hand" so that "the flock would conceive after their pattern".
It is incomprehensible:
why was it necessary to resort to such a miracle that angels should bring the sheep from Laban's flock to the flock in Jacob's hand —
the verse relates earlier,
that Jacob employed a natural segulah that "the flock would conceive after their pattern":
"And Jacob took him rods of fresh poplar, and peeled white streaks in them, and set the rods before the flock, and the flock conceived at the rods, and the flock brought forth striped, spotted, and speckled"
(and as Rashi explains there at length)?
And one finds that other commentators address this question,
but Rashi apparently does not address the explanation in this.
Regarding Father's notes on the Zohar —
and selecting a matter that has a connection to the Mitteler Rebbe,
whose subject was as mentioned above:
"Rechovot HaNahar" of the inner dimension of the Torah —
there is a story in the Zohar regarding Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai and his Torah,
whose subject is the inner dimension of the Torah,
"in this book of yours".
The Zohar relates,
that once Rabbi Shimon went to Tiberias and met Rabbi Abba, Rabbi Chiya, and Rabbi Yosi,
and when he wished to depart,
each of them spoke words of Torah:
Rabbi Abba opened and said "And the Lord said to Abram, etc.",
Rabbi Chiya opened and said "The land upon which you lie, etc."
(which is stated regarding Jacob);
(וואס שטייט ביי יעקב) 120;
Rabbi Yosi opened and said "This time I will praise the Lord, etc."
(which Leah said).
Father, in his notes on the Zohar, explains the connection of these three Tannaim to Abraham,
Jacob, and Leah in the letters of Kabbalah,
and he also explains how "all the discourses were in praise of Rabbi Shimon".
He does not, however, explain what one can derive from this in the service of God in general,
and particularly in the matter of Torah study,
and the inner dimension of the Torah,
For the main subject of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai is the Torah of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai,
and particularly according to how Father explains that "all the discourses were in praise of Rabbi Shimon" —
it is well known in the matter of the praises that the students of Rabbi Shimon praised him,
that this was in order to elicit from him that he should reveal additional matters in Torah.
And as will be explained further.
Here is the place to caution against an error in a matter that was printed in my name,
but they changed the intent,
and consequently they engaged in pilpul in the interpretation of the words;
ובמילא האט מען אין דעם מפלפל געווען בפירוש הדברים;
one must preface by stating that what was written in my name never occurred.
And this is in connection to a correction in the "Notes and Corrections" on the Tanya,
which I wrote in a manner of "a note by way of possibility",
and afterwards I regretted
that which I initially corrected even "by way of possibility",
it is based on what the "rabbis, sons of the author, of blessed memory" write in their approbation to the Tanya,
that the holy letters were not copied from the holy manuscript but only from copies scattered among the students, and therefore it is possible that scribal errors crept into these copies, with the exception of Igeret HaKodesh section 20 beginning "He and His life are one",
as the Tzemach Tzedek writes in his Sefer HaMitzvot "and regarding the aforementioned discourse one may rely more because it is from the very holy manuscript of my master and teacher, of blessed memory, which was written in the days before his passing",
and as it is printed at the end of this letter:
"Thus far we found from the holy manuscript".
Iggeret HaKodesh, section 24,
where the Alter Rebbe speaks about the caution not to engage in idle conversation during prayer,
he writes:
"From when the prayer leader begins to pray..
until the conclusion of the final Kaddish of Shacharit, Maariv, and Minchah, etc.",
which at first glance is not understood: (a)
the order "Shacharit, Maariv, and Minchah"
(not "Shacharit, Minchah, and Maariv"), (b)
how does the "etc." fit in here —
what does it add? Someone wanted to explain,
that the —
"etc." "etc." comes to add the prayers of Mussaf and Neilah. And with this the order is explained:
with "Shacharit and Maariv" the Alter Rebbe means —
all the prayers from Shacharit until Maariv,
and then he specifies the intermediate prayers:
"Minchah, etc."
(and therefore he hints at Mussaf and Neilah with an "etc.",
since they come in a secondary manner).
Regarding this I wrote:
"Apparently it escaped me that 'the conclusion of the final Kaddish of Shacharit and Minchah' is after Mussaf and Neilah",
i.e., one cannot say that with "etc." the Alter Rebbe means to hint at the prayers of Mussaf and Neilah,
because these prayers are already included in what the Alter Rebbe writes earlier "until the conclusion of the final Kaddish":
the "final Kaddish" after the Shacharit prayer is recited
(when there is a Mussaf prayer)
after the Mussaf prayer;
נאך תפלת מוסף;
and on Yom Kippur,
the final Kaddish of the Minchah prayer comes after the Neilah prayer —
there is no longer a need to warn separately regarding these prayers about the caution not to engage in idle conversation.
Afterwards I added,
that according to his interpretation
(that the "etc." comes to hint at the two prayers of Mussaf and Neilah)
it turns out that:
regarding such a serious matter, the Alter Rebbe would be sparing to specify "Mussaf and Neilah"
(since this is two words)
and writes one word "etc."! This cannot be said.
What, in this, was the error made and they printed not what I wrote:
That which I wrote that "it escaped me, etc." —
they printed entirely out of place regarding a different matter!
In addition I wrote as an "addition after the time",
that one can say that the version as it is printed "Shacharit, Maariv, and Minchah" —
is correct,
because there is a novel insight regarding the caution in the Minchah prayer compared to Shacharit and Maariv,
and therefore the Alter Rebbe writes it at the end,
in an order from the light to the severe.
And the explanation of this:
Minchah comes in continuation of the Shacharit prayer,
which is why one does not need to recite the Minchah prayer —
at first glance:
the Shema and the Shemoneh Esreh need to be together,
so how is it that in the Minchah prayer one does not recite any Shema?
The explanation for this is found in Pri Etz Chaim,
that the Shema of the Shacharit prayer is drawn out until the Minchah prayer.
And consequently there would be a rationale,
that during the Minchah prayer the interruption by conversation is not so relevant,
because in any case one interrupts between the Shema of Shacharit
(which is drawn out until Minchah)
and the Minchah prayer. And on the contrary:
according to Torah one must interrupt between them,
because after the Shacharit prayer begins the "conduct yourself with them in a manner of derech eretz",
until the Minchah prayer,
as it is written "Man goes forth to his work"
(after the Shacharit prayer)
"and to his labor until the evening" and "Man is born to toil",
he returns from his "work" at the time of "evening" and then he prays Minchah.
And especially since during the Minchah prayer there is no law of interruption between the recitation of Ashrei and the Shemoneh Esreh —
according to law one may interrupt between Ashrei and the Shemoneh Esreh.
And this is the great novel insight regarding Minchah
(which is why the Alter Rebbe places it at the end),
that so severe is the interruption by conversation,
that even in the Minchah prayer there may not be any interruption of idle conversation.
The explanation of that which the Alter Rebbe adds "etc." —
someone already caught onto this
(and it has already been written about this),
and as an introduction:
in the reason why one writes "etc." there can be two ways:
a) that the matter has a continuation and conclusion to which one hints with the "etc.". b) the matter and explanation is complete,
but there exists an entire additional explanation
(and matter)
which for whatever reason one does not want to copy,
and consequently one writes "etc.".
— Regarding "vego'." only the first manner mentioned above applies.
Because "vego'." is written on a verse, one does not copy it in its entirety,
as the reason for this is stated: "Any verse that Moses did not pause, we do not pause for it."
However, regarding "vecho'." this can also be,
because it alludes to another explanation on the totality of the matter,
and so forth.
And concerning this in our matter,
that the "vecho'." does not allude to additional details in the prayers,
but rather it alludes to an entire matter:
In the first printings of Igeret HaKodesh, they did not include the conclusion of this letter,
and therefore they added a "vecho'." to hint that a piece of the letter is missing here;
און דערפאר האט מען צוגעלייגט א "וכו'" לרמז אז דא פעלט א שטיקל פון די אגרת;
and afterwards,
when they printed the conclusion of the letter, they forgot to remove the "vecho'.".
And someone searched and found —
and may blessing come upon him —
that this letter exists in its entirety in a manuscript and there the "vecho'." is not written.
And furthermore, it can be said
(even if the "vecho'." should indeed stand) —
that the Alter Rebbe means
that there are additional explanations
(in addition to the explanation that he wrote)
in the substance of the matter of speaking idle conversation during prayer.
From the error that was made,
there actually resulted a matter of pilpul in Torah —
but may it be His will that from now on, one should initially learn Torah in a manner of expansiveness,
"Rechovot HaNahar",
without errors and so forth.
It is told that when they printed the Likkutei Torah
(in the time of the Rebbe, may his soul rest in Eden),
R. Anshil Aronowitz —
who was a precious Jew —
proofread the Likkutei Torah and corrected several thousand errors.
He went and told about this to David Hershel —
that is how they called R. David Hirsch Chernigover,
the Chernigover Rav —
in Lubavitch the custom was,
that the greater a chassid,
a Rav and so forth,
he was,
they called him with a smaller title. R. David Hirsch Chernigover,
the Chernigover Rav —
who was a great scholar and among the individuals to whom the Rebbe Maharash gave ordination —
they called him specifically by the name David Hershel!
When I heard this story and in it they call him David Hershel,
I sought a source for this in the revealed part of Torah,
and I found —
"I have toiled and found" *133:
It is told in the Prophets and Writings that when Uriah called Yoav with the title "my master Yoav" in the presence of King David,
this was a rebellion against the monarchy.
And so it is in this matter:
By a chassid, the Rebbe always stands before his eyes,
and especially when one relates a word from the Rebbe,
at which time it must be as if the one who heard the teaching stands before him *134,
the countenance of the Rebbe stands before him —
so when the Rebbe stands before his eyes, he cannot call another with a title,
like "Rav" and so forth!
So when David Hershel heard about the errors that Aronowitz corrected in Likkutei Torah, he was not satisfied with this. And he explained it thus:
Before the errors were corrected,
one toiled in the maamar
(with the errors)
to understand the plain meaning,
and thought about it and searched in other places what the plain meaning is,
until one caught on that there is an error;
ביז מ'האט זיך געכאפט אז ס'איז דא א גרייז;
but when he corrected the errors,
a Jew will learn the maamar and everything will be fine for him,
and he will then go and lie down to sleep!
This,
what David Hershel said,
is good as a witty remark,
and this is his personal feeling —
but in practice, it is a law that one may not hold a book that is not proofread.
One should indeed do as David Hershel said,
one should toil and learn the maamar,
and find the errors and then proofread them in practice,
in order to have a proofread book.
May it be His will that one learn Torah with expansiveness,
without errors, heaven forbid,
and without any distortion,
constraints and limitations. And this will bring that also in practical conduct it will be "and I shall walk in a broad place",
and not that one will be fallen from exile,
or even lower —
the claim that the exile does not disturb him,
as long as he can learn Torah he is satisfied with the exile and it does not bother him to remain stuck in exile, may the Merciful One save us!
And others claim that it is the beginning of the redemption,
not looking at the fact that there has never been such darkness of exile!
That the opposite of "and I will walk in a broad place" and the constriction of wanting to remain in exile,
comes from the constriction in the study of Torah,
that the study of Torah is not in breadth:
he does not study Torah in order to hear what the Torah wants to tell him,
rather he wants to insert into the Torah what suits him. Consequently it also brings about a lack of breadth in his conduct,
the opposite of "and I will walk in a broad place",
until he falls into exile and into gentileness and into the hands of gentiles.
If one studies Torah in breadth,
this will also bring that one will conduct oneself in breadth,
"and I will walk in a broad place",
and not be fallen into the hands of gentiles and into gentileness.
And when Jews in one place will go in a manner of "and I will walk in a broad place",
since all of Israel are sureties for one another,
whether one wants or does not want,
this brings about breadth and expansiveness among all Jews in all places where they are,
that they have health of the body and health of the soul.
And "with our young and with our old, with our sons and with our daughters" one goes out of exile,
whether one wants or does not want
(if there the situation is such) —
one will drag out every Jew from exile,
and enter into the true and complete redemption,
very soon.
Regarding the explanation in Rashi's commentary —
there is another matter that requires explanation,
although this is not in the plain meaning,
but in any case in the "wine of Torah" that is in Rashi's commentary:
in Chassidus it discusses the superiority of the world of Berudim relative to the world of Nekudim,
that this is the matter of the world of Tikkun. And as the Tzemach Tzedek explains that the superiority of the world of Tikkun is in the matter of "Berudim" which means "the inclusion of several colors together, as it is written in Zechariah, 'speckled horses,' meaning that they have many colors",
not like in "Nekudim" where there is "each level by itself". And about this it is explained in the discourses of the Mitteler Rebbe:
Although he does not bring the verse from Zechariah,
nevertheless this explanation in "Berudim" is based on this verse.
And at first glance,
where does one see in Rashi's commentary a matter of "many colors"? And on the contrary —
"Petzichin" is at first glance the opposite of the inclusion of several colors together. And as mentioned above,
that although Rashi explains the plain meaning of the verse,
nevertheless,
since Rashi is also the wine of Torah,
one must say,
that Rashi's explanation of "Berudim" according to the plain meaning,
is also consistent with the matter of "Berudim" in the secret part of the Torah,
which refers to the world of Tikkun.
The reason why Rashi does not accept
(like the explanation of the Radak)
that "Berudim" is from the term "barad" (hail):
If one were to learn that "Berudim" is from the term "barad",
it would turn out,
that the difference between "Nekudim" and "Berudim" is:
"Nekudim" means small spots,
like a dot;
ווי א נקודה;
and "Berudim" are larger spots,
like "barad" —
the question arises:
This difference is the same as the difference between "Nekudim" and "Teluim",
as Rashi explained earlier:
"Nakod..
with thin spots..
Talua..
broad spots";
חברבורות רחבות";
now why does the Torah change from "Teluim" to "Berudim",
it is the same thing! Therefore Rashi learns like the Targum —
"Petzichin",
which according to this means "Berudim" an entirely different matter —
"a thread of white encircles its body, etc.".
The explanation of what Rashi says "and I have no source to bring from the verse",
although the word "Berudim" also appears in Zechariah —
Rashi has already warned in his commentary previously:
On the verse "and it will be, whenever the strong sheep conceived" Rashi explains:
"Hamekusharot —
like its Targum, the early ones, and he has no source in the verse. And Menachem connected it with Achitofel in the conspirators,
and the conspiracy was strong,
those that bind together to hasten their conception".
One sees from this,
that the meaning of "he has no source in the verse" is not that the word does not appear again in the verse —
Rashi himself immediately brings how "Menachem connected it" to other places where this language appears —
rather that one cannot bring a proof "source" from another verse for this explanation.
And so it is in our matter:
From Zechariah there is no proof for the interpretation of the word "berudim." The Targum in Zechariah indeed also says there "petzichin"
(as here) —
But from the "Mikra" itself there is no "witness" and proof for this interpretation,
more than from our verse.
That which Rashi in Zechariah translates "berudim" —
"menumarim" and does not say the entire length that he says in our portion,
one can say,
that this is because he relies that one remembers the word "berudim" from the Chumash,
and consequently he relies on his interpretation in our portion.
One must still understand:
From where does Rashi take
(from the plain meaning of Scripture)
that "berudim" means a "thread of white"? The explanation in this is:
We learned earlier,
that when Jacob wanted to bring about that the sheep should be born "speckled and spotted" he took "a rod of fresh poplar, and peeled white streaks in them, laying bare the white that was on the rods,"
and as Rashi explains there how everything was connected with a white appearance. From this it is understandable,
that the spots on the sheep
(which were caused by "the flocks conceived before the rods"),
were in a white appearance. And from this Rashi derives also regarding "berudim,"
that this is "a thread of white."
The wine of Torah in Rashi's commentary:
Rashi begins "a thread of white encircles its body around,"
with which Rashi alludes to that which is revealed through the service in the world of Tikkun
(and as mentioned,
that "berudim" refers to the world of Tikkun),
which was the service of Jacob.
And as is known,
that from the perspective of creation there is the illumination of the line in the worlds,
as it is brought in Iggeret HaKodesh that an illumination and an illumination of an illumination from the line shines until the feet of Asiyah,
but nevertheless,
the line does not touch the great circle at its bottom,
no more than at its beginning *145;
מער ניט ווי בראשיתו *145;
But through the service of Jews in the world of Tikkun in its completeness, one reveals that the line should touch the great circle also at its bottom, as it will be in the future to come.
And this Rashi alludes to in his language:
"a thread of white encircles its body around."
Based on this,
that "a thread of white etc." refers to the drawing down of the line into the world of Tikkun,
one will also understand the details of the expressions in Rashi's commentary:
The line is indeed a simple light,
therefore Rashi says "a thread of white,"
because "white" indicates simplicity,
it is above all colors.
Afterwards, there is how the line shines in the worlds and is drawn downward,
whose drawing down is in a manner of "encircles its body etc. and its streaks etc.":
First, from it come the encompassing lights that are in each and every world,
as is known that from this line also come the encompassing lights,
for the line goes and spreads and encircles —
first comes the encompassing light of the first world, which encompasses that entire world,
"encircles its body around,"
and so on in the subsequent world etc.
"encircles its body around" —
each and every body,
each and every world:
Afterwards, there are the "streaks." This is the drawing down into the interior,
which reveals the connection of the worlds with Divinity, "perforated from one to the other" until it becomes a dwelling place for Him, blessed be He, in the lower realms.
And based on this, all the expressions in Rashi's commentary are understandable,
even though his purpose is to explain the plain meaning of Scripture. However, in this commentary of Rashi there is a certain lengthiness of words and customary —
"like its Targum,"
"and petzichin." "Explanation in the vernacular." French,
"a thread of white encircles its body around,"
"and its streaks are open and perforated from one to the other"
(from one to the other etc." Only with each expression Rashi intends to allude to an additional matter from the world of Tikkun,
the world of Berudim.
And may it be His will that the matter of white, which indicates simplicity,
should be drawn downward,
which in the future will be in the days of the future to come.
And on Yom Kippur there is something similar to this,
for then the High Priest wears white garments,
because this is connected with simplicity,
and also the day of Yom Kippur is once a year,
and then the High Priest enters,
the unique one in soul,
into the unique place,
the Holy of Holies.
And so it also descends into the service of every Jew,
that the shell that covers him is removed and his whiteness is revealed,
the simplicity within him,
his point of Judaism.
May it be His will that the simplicity of white be drawn down from above to above until to below to below,
and it shall be a dwelling place for Him, blessed be He, in the lower realms,
openly and completely in the true and complete redemption through our righteous Messiah.
"And behold, with the clouds of heaven" in the Holy Land, in the Holy Temple. With this the Yalkut Shimoni answers the question on that which it is written "And it shall be, from new moon to its new moon and from Sabbath to its Sabbath, all flesh shall come to bow down before Me, says the Lord,"
that in the future to come they will make the pilgrimage every Rosh Chodesh and every Sabbath —
"And how will they come on Rosh Chodesh and on Sabbath from the end of the world,
rather the clouds come and carry them and bring them to Jerusalem,"
so they will fly on clouds!
May it be His will that from this speech and elaboration on all this,
it should come down into actuality. And not only that one has an additional simple interpretation and a hint and a saying,
rather it should be so in actuality literally below ten handbreadths —
one should grab hold that here one finds oneself in the Holy Temple together with King David, the Messiah.
And even before this, the conduct of the Jewish people is in the manner of "and I shall walk in a broad place,"
that one is not affected and cast down by gentiles and by gentileness.
And also the gentiles see that the Jewish people stand with strength and with pride and expansiveness regarding all matters of Judaism,
the study of Torah and the fulfillment of the commandments.
And to engage in the spreading of the wellsprings outward especially,
connected with the Torah of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai,
in which there are three matters,
as will be explained below.
Including also,
at this time,
preparing oneself for the days of Chanukah,
when one lights the candles "at the entrance of his house from the outside,"
until the foot of the Tarmodai ceases.
It becomes so in actuality literally in completeness below,
in the true and complete redemption,
speedily in our days, literally.
Standing a short time before the nineteenth of Kislev —
here is the place also to mention about making the preparations for the farbrengens of the nineteenth of Kislev,
and to connect this with an increase in the study of Torah,
the revealed part of Torah and the inner dimension of Torah,
Chassidus,
which has a special connection with the nineteenth of Kislev,
as is known the talk of the Rebbe, of blessed memory, that the main matter of "your wellsprings shall spread forth outward" began after Petersburg,
which certainly everyone can add in this more and more.
That the preparations for this already begin from Rosh Chodesh Kislev,
and especially from the Sabbath that is before the Sabbath that comes immediately before the nineteenth of Kislev
(as in the determination of this year),
which is the Sabbath
(and for the Minchah of this Sabbath they will read from the portion of the Sabbath before the nineteenth of Kislev).
And especially since the Sabbath comes in continuation and as a conclusion to the ninth and tenth of Kislev,
the festival of redemption of the middle Rebbe —
this gives even more strength to be able to carry out the matters connected with the nineteenth of Kislev,
the festival of redemption of the old Rebbe,
Until in a manner of "and you shall spread forth to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south,"
as it is stated at the beginning of our portion.
And so too one should do with greater vigor and greater strength in all the campaigns,
beginning with that every Jew should have a letter in one of the general Torah scrolls. And the matter of the unity of Israel and love of Israel,
education —
of oneself and of others,
Torah,
tefillin,
mezuzah,
charity,
a house full of books —
Yavneh and its sages,
the candles of the holy Sabbath and festivals,
the kashrut of food and drink and sleeping and marital purity,
Until one will merit the fulfillment of the prophecy "Fortunate are you, Israel, before whom do you purify yourselves and who purifies you? Your Father in Heaven, as it is said, 'And I will sprinkle upon you pure water and you shall be purified,' and it says, 'The hope of Israel is the Lord; as a mikveh purifies the impure, so does the Holy One, blessed be He, purify Israel,'"
speedily in our days, literally.
The explanation in the Zohar. And with an introduction,
as a parenthetical statement:
The discourses and praises with which the three Tannaim praised Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai came in connection with that "Rabbi Shimon went out to the villages,
Rabbi Abba and Rabbi Chiya and Rabbi Yosi happened upon him,
when he saw them he said
(Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai)
'Novelties of Torah are needed here. They sat under those trees,
when he wanted to go,'"
at the time Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai wanted to leave,
"each one opened with a verse," —
each one of them said his discourse and praise about Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai.
The explanation of "Rabbi Shimon went out to the villages" and the explanation of the matters that were encountered here —
is explained by the Ohr HaChamah:
"Rashbi went out to the villages,
according to Rashi's interpretation in Tractate Berachot, to engage in the work of their estate,
and in the first chapter of Pesachim he interpreted to see their crops. New insights of Torah,
I need to innovate for them new insights since they have been encountered here. When he wanted to go, Rashbi stood as he wished to part from them to go engage in the work of his lands, each one opened a verse to praise him and to say that it was not fitting to leave him and go on his way, but it is impossible."
That which the Ohr HaChamah says that "Rabbi Shimon went out to the villages" means "to go engage in the work of his lands"
(as Rashi interprets "villages" in the Gemara)
is entirely incomprehensible:
For Rashbi's Torah was his craft,
and he said "Is it possible
(rhetorically)
that a person plows at plowing time and sows at sowing time and reaps at reaping time, etc., what will become of Torah?"!? —
Now how can one say that Rashbi went "to engage in the work of his lands"?!
And especially since Rashbi's father was a wealthy man and a relative of the monarchy,
surely Rashbi certainly did not need to have lands for the sake of livelihood, etc.!
The Ohr HaChamah was indeed a great one among Israel,
and the Tzemach Tzedek brings him in many places —
one can possibly explain his words according to how the Gemara relates about the conduct of Rashbi:
The Gemara relates,
that "wherever Rabbi Elazar would strike, Rashbi would heal",
meaning that he would heal and rectify matters of the world. Moreover —
Rashbi himself sought and inquired "is there something that needs rectification" and he would rectify it. And as it is related there that "they told me there is a place where there is a doubt of impurity and the priests have difficulty going around it",
and Rashbi purified the place. And based on this one can say also regarding the Zohar in our matter
(according to the interpretation of the Ohr HaChamah),
that that which "Rabbi Shimon went out to the villages",
even though his Torah was his craft, etc.,
was in order to rectify the land and fields, etc.,
and he would learn Torah there in the manner of his Torah being his craft.
And that which the three Tannaim said discourses and praised him,
"when he wished to part from them to go engage in the work of his lands,
each one opened a verse to praise him and to say that it was not fitting to leave him and go on his way",
the explanation is,
that they wanted that before he arrives at that place in order to rectify it and learn Torah there,
he should learn with them here.
Thus far the parenthetical statement.
The explanation and the lesson of the actual story in the Zohar:
The discourses that Rabbi Abba,
Rabbi Chiya and Rabbi Yosi said on the verses connected to Avram,
Yaakov and Leah,
are in praise of Rabbi Shimon. Not because Rashbi needs to receive praises, heaven forbid,
but as is known
(as mentioned earlier)
that the matter of the praises with which the students of Rashbi praised him,
was in order to elicit from him that he should reveal additional matters in the inner dimensions of the Torah.
And similarly, the praises that Jews say in their prayer regarding the Most High,
is not because the Most High needs to receive them, heaven forbid,
but in order to elicit from Him the matters and the flows. Like the matter of "Shield of Avraham",
"Reviver of the dead", etc.,
and the rest of the requests for one's needs which one asks in prayer.
That the revelation and study of the inner dimensions of the Torah
(which the Tannaim wanted to elicit from Rashbi through the praises)
is generally connected with three details and levels: (a)
it comes from above to above, (b)
it is drawn down into details and details of details, (c)
it comes down into a decision and conclusion and thus into halachah and actual deed.
That is, the study is in the manner of bringing the discussion to a conclusion according to the halachah. —
And as explained in the continuation of 5666 that then the study itself is also in a more elevated manner,
until the perfection of the study, etc.
The study of the revealed aspect of the Torah can also be with these three details and levels,
but there it is not necessary:
One can study the revealed aspect of the Torah in a manner that it does not necessarily come down into a halachah,
one studies only the discussion of the matter;
מ'לערנט נאר די שקו"ט דבדבר;
one can study only the halachah,
without the discussion.
However, in the study of the inner dimension of the Torah, it is necessary that all these three details and levels be present in it:
The study must be connected and come from above to above,
One indeed begins to learn from the Alef-Beit of Chassidus,
But afterwards one must arrive at its depth, etc.
(as will be explained);
(כדלקמן);
The study must descend into details and sub-details;
דער לימוד מוז אראפקומען אין פרטים ופרטי פרטים;
And the study must descend into a decision and thus into action and practical law. One can be a maskil in Chassidus,
And a true maskil,
But his intellectual comprehension must descend into a thus in practical action.
And the reason for this:
Since the study of the inner dimension of the Torah is the matter of "Know the God of your father and serve Him with a whole heart,"
This must be a study in the manner of knowledge
("Know"),
For Daat is comprehension in the most elevated manner,
And in a manner that it descends after Chochmah and Binah into knowledge and decision, etc.,
Until "the ultimate knowledge is that we do not know You"
(as will be explained),
And in addition, this must bring to "and serve Him with a whole heart,"
Service in action and in a complete manner,
In completeness,
Consequently, it must have all three details and levels mentioned above.
According to the revealed dimension, when one fulfills a commandment,
Such as the commandment of Tefillin,
One can fulfill the commandment in action without all these intentions in it,
And one then has the essence,
Because one has fulfilled the commandment in action,
As explained in Tanya;
כמבואר בתניא 175;
However, when it must be "Know the God of your father and serve Him with a whole heart"
(the study of the inner dimension of the Torah)
It is not sufficient to only fulfill the commandment in action,
Rather, this must be "and serve Him with a whole heart" connected with "Know the God of your father" —
All three matters mentioned above. —
And since in the matter at hand
(in the Zohar)
Rabbi Abba,
Rabbi Chiya and Rabbi Yossi elicited a revelation of the inner dimension of the Torah from Rashbi by praising him —
Therefore, they said Torah and in the manner of "Pata'ach" —
The opening of a new channel,
On the three verses
(each according to his level),
Connected with Avram,
Yaakov and Leah,
Because these three
(Avram,
Yaakov and Leah)
And the three verses which they expounded correspond to the three details and levels that must be in the study of the inner dimension of the Torah:
"Rabbi Abba opened and said, 'And Hashem said to Avram, etc.':"
Avram —
As he here precisely brings a verse in connection with Avram specifically as he is called Avram,
Not yet Avraham,
On account of "father of a multitude of nations" —
Is connected with a level above to above all matters. As explained in Torah Or Parshat Lech Lecha the difference between Avram and Avraham,
That Avram is as he is higher before all matters,
Av Ram —
The intellect hidden from all conception,
However, Avraham,
"Father of a multitude of nations,"
Is as he is connected with the world.
[In the note of the Tatte on this Zohar, he explains how this subsequently descends into Avraham,
"Father of a multitude, etc." But here they speak about Avram,
As it is stated in the verse brought in the Zohar,
As he is above all matters,
The intellect hidden from all conception,
Prior to this, as he descends in connection with the world].
Which corresponds to the first detail and the first level that must be in the study of the inner dimension of the Torah —
That this must be connected and come from above to above.
Afterwards, "Rabbi Chiya opened and said, 'The land upon which you lie,'"
Which is stated by Yaakov:
Yaakov is the letters Yud Ekev,
The Yud is drawn into the midot,
I.e., as it descends into details and sub-details. —
Corresponding to the second detail and the second level in the study of the inner dimension of the Torah,
As the study comes into details and sub-details.
The Kotzo Shel Yud of this Yud of Yaakov is the level of Avram,
The intellect hidden from all conception,
Above to above. And since all this
(the Kotzo Shel Yud,
And the Yud — Ekev)
Is in the word Yaakov,
It brings out that the sub-details are connected and come from and are founded upon the level that is above to above,
The intellect hidden from all conception. Which proves —
In the matter at hand —
That the study of the inner dimension of the Torah begins from above to above,
And from it, it descends into details and sub-details,
Founded upon the level above to above.
Afterwards, "Rabbi Yosi opened and said, 'This time I will thank the Lord,'"
which Leah said in connection with the birth of her son Judah:
The concept of "This time I will thank the Lord,"
thanksgiving to the Lord,
is connected with the concept of a ruling of halachah,
because in order that from a study and give-and-take there should come down a decision in a ruling of halachah as is proper,
it is necessary that in that person, the student, there should be self-nullification and thanksgiving to the Lord,
that he rules thus because thus is the will of the Lord,
as explained in many places.
That this is corresponding to the third detail and third level that must be in the study of the inner dimension of the Torah,
that from the study which is taken from above to above and comes down into details and details of details —
it should come down into a decision and a conclusion and a ruling of halachah.
In particular, in the sefirot, these three levels are
(which must be in the study of the inner dimension of the Torah) —
Chabad:
Chochmah —
the supernal father,
the intellect that is hidden from every conception,
Binah —
understanding and comprehension in details and details of details,
and Daat —
decision and ruling of halachah,
and from this comes the birth of the emotions until this comes down into actual deed.
And this is the concept of
(the study)
of Chabad Chassidus,
which is the inner dimension of the Torah,
the Torah of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai,
as it has been revealed now,
even in a manner of "they will be sustained" from Me —
that the study must be in all three levels mentioned above,
Chochmah, Binah, and Daat.
For further explanation:
In the Chabad leaders, the first three leaders correspond to Chochmah, Binah, and Daat, as is known:
the Alter Rebbe corresponds to the sefirah of Chochmah,
the Mitteler Rebbe corresponds to the sefirah of Binah —
and the Tzemach Tzedek corresponds to the sefirah of Daat.
And as one also sees in their Chassidic discourses:
the Alter Rebbe's discourses are points in brief,
in the aspect of Chochmah,
the intellect that is hidden from every conception. The Mitteler Rebbe's discourses are at length, with explanation and elucidation,
"the broad river" —
Binah.
In the Tzemach Tzedek's discourses, one sees
(to the extent that one can see in the discourses)
that every topic is discussed at length
(and connected with the revealed dimension, etc.),
and he brings every topic to a conclusion in halachah,
and particularly as one sees it in his Sefer HaMitzvot. That this is the concept of Daat —
a decision and conclusion and a practical ruling in halachah of the topics which one studies. And together with this, it comes with a lengthiness —
Binah.
Together with this
(in the discourses of the Tzemach Tzedek)
one sees that the Tzemach Tzedek establishes the topics which he writes upon the Chassidus of the Alter Rebbe,
Chochmah,
the intellect that is hidden from every conception.
And as is known what the Rebbe Maharash said about the Tzemach Tzedek,
and from this it is understood all the more so and certainly regarding the Alter Rebbe,
that upon one word or upon one topic
[I did not hear this from my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe, only from Chassidim —
I do not know the exact wording]
from his golden expression one can build an entire discourse.
And this one sees in the Tzemach Tzedek in his discourses,
that he establishes every topic upon the words of the Alter Rebbe,
and he is precise in every word and topic that the Alter Rebbe says.
That here one sees openly in the discourses of the Tzemach Tzedek the study of Chabad Chassidus with all three concepts mentioned above, Chabad
(Chochmah, Binah, and Daat) —
this is connected and comes from and is founded upon the intellect that is hidden from every conception,
above to above;
למעלה מעלה;
this comes down into details and details of details;
דאס קומט אראפ אין פרטים ופרטי פרטים;
and this comes down into a conclusion in halachah, Daat,
which is connected and founded upon the intellect that is hidden from every conception,
above to above.
And as discussed above, that this is the concept of "Know the God of your father and serve Him with a whole heart."
Until this is connected not only with the aspect of the intellect that is hidden from every conception,
but even higher than this,
because "the ultimate knowledge is that we do not know"
(as above),
that he reaches a level in the knowledge of Divinity higher than his knowledge,
the aspect of "that we do not know."
He may become frightened and think that "that we do not know" means that he does not understand,
he will flee from it,
because he wants specifically to understand.
One tells him:
On the contrary, "the ultimate knowledge is that we do not know." That the explanation in this is
(not that he comes to not understanding,
but on the contrary),
that through the fact that the person, the student, nullifies himself and his knowledge and his selfhood,
he becomes devoid of the existence of a yesh,
and he becomes unified with the author of the discourse
(whom he studies)
and with the intellect and knowledge that he studies,
and in the matter at hand —
with Divinity in the aspect of "that we do not know,"
As explained in Tanya, chapter five, then through that which the intellect is intellectual and comprehends some concept, "behold the intellect grasps the concept and encompasses it in its intellect, and the concept is grasped and encompassed and clothed within the intellect, etc."
(with all the expressions in this),
and it becomes a "wondrous unity, the likes of which there is no unity, nor even comparable to it, found at all in physicality, to be truly one and unified from every side and angle",
consequently he becomes unified with Divinity in the aspect of "we do not know",
the "we do not know" becomes for him "we know";
ווערט דער "שלא נדעך" ביי אים "נדעך" 180;
he attains a knowledge that is much higher than his knowledge
(from the side of the essence).
And based on this, there is also an explanation in the story that is told, that the Rebbe, may his soul rest in Eden, said,
that thus is "the ultimate purpose of knowledge is that we do not know",
but at the time that he sits and learns in Likkutei Torah, it becomes "we know". On the surface, the explanation of this is not understood:
What does it mean that it becomes "we know" —
do we not say that "the ultimate purpose of knowledge is that we do not know"?
The explanation of this is,
that this is what is written in Tanya:
the ultimate purpose of knowledge is that one should nullify one's own existence and knowledge,
and through this the learning becomes in a manner until a "wondrous unity, etc.",
and then he ceases to exist and becomes one thing with the Possessor of the intellect,
and then he has the ultimate purpose of knowledge.
And to this one comes through the study of the inner dimension of the Torah,
higher than the intellect that is hidden from every concept,
to "the ultimate purpose of knowledge is that we do not know".
The lesson from this story in the Zohar according to the above explanation:
Every Chassidic discourse of our Rabbis, our leaders, is analogous to that of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai,
because every leader fills the place of the leader who preceded him, up to Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai —
the source of Chassidus.
And therefore, when a Jew studies a discourse of the Rebbes, it is as if he meets Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai
(in the manner of "there appeared to me Rabbi Abba and Rabbi Chiya and Rabbi Yossi").
He must then arouse the three aforementioned levels
(which the three Tannaim aroused in Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai through their praising him)
as they are within him,
that is, to study the Chassidic discourse of Chabad with all three levels:
to understand it as it comes from above and beyond,
the intellect that is hidden from every concept,
and even higher than this;
און נאך העכער דערפון;
to study it in detail with details and details of details;
לערנען דאס בפרטיות מיט פרטים ופרטי פרטים;
and to study it in a manner that from it should emerge a conclusion and accordingly and a law in actual service,
in love and awe and splendor
(emotional attributes).
And this is a fundamental matter, that from the comprehension in this there should emerge into actual service,
for "know the God of your father and serve Him with a whole heart." The study of this is not only relevant to a commandment such as, for example, the commandment of tefillin —
rather, the study is relevant to faith in God,
and to love of God,
which is the root of all positive commandments,
and to fear of God,
the root of all negative commandments.
The lesson from the story in the Zohar is especially relevant to this time —
in the days of preparation for the nineteenth of Kislev,
the festival of redemption of the Alter Rebbe:
the redemption of the nineteenth of Kislev was not a redemption of an ordinary person, heaven forbid,
rather of the Alter Rebbe. And it is understood simply the greatness of the elevation of the Alter Rebbe even before the redemption. One understands from this that his redemption brought about an even higher elevation in the Alter Rebbe relative to how he was before the redemption.
Therefore the nineteenth of Kislev is the festival of festivals,
not merely a festival,
rather the festival of festivals,
because it is not merely a redemption of such a person,
rather a redemption of the Alter Rebbe,
who himself was already on the most elevated level.
That is, that it is a redemption in the most elevated manner —
a redemption on a level that is already, from the side of the essence, a most elevated level.
And this is connected with the point hinted above —
that Chabad Chassidus
(and the inner dimension of the Torah in general)
is connected with above and beyond,
the intellect that is hidden from every concept,
and even higher than this. And this is the particular level of the Alter Rebbe,
upon which the Chassidus of the later generations is founded.
And the redemption of the nineteenth of Kislev brought about an even more elevated elevation in the above and beyond of the Alter Rebbe,
the intellect that is hidden from every concept —
as is known what the Rebbe, may his soul rest in Eden, said
(as printed in Torat Shalom, may his merit protect us),
that it is difficult to say,
but one can say and one does say,
that the redemption of the Alter Rebbe
(on the nineteenth of Kislev)
brought about in the manner of an olive, when one crushes it, it releases its oil,
releases its oil from the inner dimension of the Torah.
May it be His will that from the redemption of the old Rebbe, may they soon actually come to the true and complete redemption.
Just as there are those who travel away from here before the 19th of Kislev to other countries —
they will be given a thing that brings joy from the farbrengen,
and at the time they will arrive in those countries, they should make a farbrengen with the participation of what will be given to them here,
and there speak about the great necessity of involvement in the campaigns in general and in spreading the wellsprings outward in particular. Just as among those who travel there are also bridegrooms,
that a bridegroom is connected with a new world,
connected with a new light etc. —
they will also be given bottles of mashkeh as participation in their wedding. And they should give them to the people in each country who can make a farbrengen there.
May it be His will that they travel there in good health,
and regarding those for whom there will be ratzo vashov,
that they will return back here,
may this also be in good health. And the weddings should be at a good and auspicious hour and an everlasting building on the foundation of Torah and mitzvos.
His Holy Honor the Rebbe, may he live for many good years, distributed bottles of whiskey to several bridegrooms who are traveling to other places,
and to several others who are traveling before the 19th of Kislev.
And afterwards he said:
Those who have taken bottles of mashkeh should distribute a part of it here,
since it is Shabbos,
and the continuation in the places to which they are traveling.
He began to niggun "We Want Moshiach Now."
Afterwards he said:
Those who need to make a blessing after meals,
will certainly make a blessing after meals.
After the Minchah prayer he began to niggun "Yibaneh Beis HaMikdash" etc.
