English translation 1
It is the Shabbat of blessing the month of Kislev.
It is the Shabbat of blessing the month of Kislev.
It has been discussed many times,
that in addition to the common aspect that exists between this Shabbat Mevarchim HaChodesh and all other Shabbat Mevarchim,
there is also a particular and unique matter in this Shabbat Mevarchim that distinguishes it from all other Shabbat Mevarchim — that this is Shabbat Mevarchim Chodesh Kislev.
And in addition to the common aspect of Shabbat Mevarchim Chodesh Kislev in this year with Shabbat Mevarchim Chodesh Kislev in all other years, there is a particular and unique matter in Shabbat Mevarchim Chodesh Kislev in this year that distinguishes it from Shabbat Mevarchim Chodesh Kislev in all other years.
Just as this is in Torah —
from which all matters are derived:
Torah was stated in generalities and particulars1,
and in every particular there are two matters —
every particular has a common aspect with all other particulars,
because every particular is a part of the same generality;
ווייל יעדער פרט איז א חלק פון דעם זעלבן כלל;
also, every particular is a particular in its own right.
So too in all matters,
which are all derived from Torah,
i.e., the entire order of the chain of descent.
And certainly this is so in all matters connected to Torah and mitzvot.
Including also the matter at hand of Shabbat Mevarchim Chodesh Kislev,
for the blessing of the month is a matter of Torah,
and Shabbat Mevarchim HaChodesh is a custom of Israel which is Torah2 —
there are in this both matters —
both of which are essential matters:
the common aspect of this Shabbat Mevarchim HaChodesh with all Shabbat Mevarchim,
and the particular and unique matter of this Shabbat Mevarchim — Shabbat Mevarchim Chodesh Kislev. And within this itself there is the particular and unique matter of Shabbat Mevarchim Chodesh Kislev in this year relative to Shabbat Mevarchim Chodesh Kislev in all other years.
The common aspect of Shabbat Mevarchim Chodesh Kislev in all years is,
that it always occurs in
(the end)
of the month of Cheshvan,
and it is connected to the month of Kislev
(therefore on this Shabbat one blesses — the month of Kislev),
as is simply understood.
Within this itself there can be several variations —
the particular and unique matter of Shabbat Mevarchim Chodesh Kislev in this year is,
that this is Shabbat Parshat Chayei Sarah
(for Shabbat Mevarchim Chodesh Kislev can also occur on a different Shabbat);
(וואס שבת מברכים חודש כסלו קען אויסקומען אויך אין אן אנדער שבת);
and this is the 27th of Cheshvan.
And one must derive a lesson in divine service not only from the general matter of Shabbat Mevarchim and from Shabbat Mevarchim Chodesh Kislev,
but also from every particular.
One should not say that one must learn only from the general matter,
as opposed to the particulars, which are from where would it be,
because it is only by way of happenstance, Heaven forbid.
Rather, one must learn from every single particular.
As is known the explanation in the books3
(and explained in books of mussar and Chassidut)
on the verse4 "And if you walk with Me in happenstance,"
that "happenstance" is from the term "occurrence":
When one considers that a certain matter that occurred is only by way of happenstance, Heaven forbid,
then "I will also walk with you in happenstance"5,
the conduct and providence from Above is then also in a manner of "happenstance" and from where would it be, Heaven forbid.
And the difference is understood whether the providence from Above is in a manner of "the eyes6 of Hashem are upon the righteous"7 or in another manner.
And therefore every single particular is precise and intentional
(the opposite of happenstance),
and therefore one must derive from it a lesson in the service of Hashem.
And according to the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov8, that from every single particular that occurs and a Jew sees it or hears about it,
he must derive a lesson in the service9 of his Master. And this is an essential matter,
because "I was created to serve my Master"9.
And the lesson from every particular must be understandable to every Jew,
also to a simple person,
Because "Torah was commanded to us by Moses, an inheritance for the congregation of Jacob"10,
Torah,
from the term "teaching"11,
is an inheritance for every Jew,
also for a simple person,
consequently one must speak and explain every lesson in Torah in a way that it should be understood by everyone,
also for a simple person.
This is indeed taken from halachah and secrets and secrets of secrets of Torah,
but it is brought out in a way that it should be understood simply,
also for a simple person.
And the lesson in Torah that must be understood also simply,
also for a simple person,
is from every single particular,
as above —
because every single particular that occurs is connected to and derives from Torah.
What is stated in the Gemara:
"There is nothing that is not hinted at in the Torah"12. And the explanation of this is not
(as others learn),
that it speaks only about matters of Torah,
that every matter in the Oral Torah etc. is hinted at in the Written Torah,
but also about matters of the world,
that every single matter in the world exists in the Torah.
What actually is stated in the Gemara:
In Tractate Bava Kama there is an entire topic13 "From where is this matter that people say",
i.e., where does one find in the Torah that which people say in the world.
And Tractate Kama is a primary tractate that is studied in yeshivas,
both in previous generations and also in our generation. Consequently, this is also an answer to those who argue that the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov
(including also the aforementioned teaching,
that every single detail in the world is connected with Torah,
and consequently one must derive from it a lesson)
pertains only to the students of the Baal Shem Tov,
but our concern is to study the revealed aspect,
and that is sufficient –
why need one add additional matters etc.
There is an entire topic in Tractate Bava Kama that teaches a Jew,
that "From where is this matter that people say":
When one hears a matter that people say in the world –
where "people" simply means
(according to the revealed aspect)
not specifically Tannaim and Amoraim and Sages etc.,
but ordinary people,
even including non-
Jews,
people who are in the marketplace –
it is a certainty that this has a source in the Torah,
the question is only "From where is this matter that people say",
where is the source for this in the Torah.
And this does not speak about every matter that people say,
but about a matter that he has not heard,
it is not possible to ask from where is this matter. Rather, he has heard about it –
he must seek a source for it in the Torah.
This is the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov that –
in other words –
from every matter that a Jew has heard about,
even about a matter in the world,
he must connect it with Torah and with a lesson in the service of Hashem.
When one hears a matter that people say in the marketplace,
he does not know at all who said it,
whether a Jew or a gentile,
he could nevertheless think:
What does this concern him,
he need not listen to it at all nor pay attention to it.
It is understandable that he must have dealings with people in the marketplace out of necessity for his livelihood,
because it must be "and Hashem your G-d will bless you in all that you do"14,
he deals with them unavoidably;
האט ער דערמיט צו טאן בלית ברירה;
but when he already sits to study Torah and pray to Hashem,
and he hears a word that people in the marketplace have said –
he need not listen to it at all. And on the contrary –
it even disturbs him!
The entire topic in Tractate Bava Kama teaches him,
a tractate in the Torah,
that when he studies Torah,
Tractate Bava Kama,
the manner of study must be of "From where is this matter that people say":
He hears a matter that people say in the marketplace, he must immediately connect it with his Torah study.
And this is stated in the Order of Nezikin,
and there specifically in Tractate Bava Kama,
not in a later Bava,
not at the end of the Bavot,
as a secondary matter;
אלס א זייטיקער ענין;
not that after one has finished studying the Bavot, one comes and tells him an additional matter,
that he should know "From where is this matter that people say" –
rather, this is stated in Bava Kama,
which
proves that this is a primary matter.
And as mentioned,
this is the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov,
that every matter that a Jew hears is precisely connected with Torah and with a lesson in the service of Hashem.
And this does not speak about a matter in the Torah,
but about a matter that people say in the marketplace,
before one elevates and clarifies it in the Torah;
פאר דעם ווי מ'איז דאס מעלה ומברר בתורה;
afterwards it indeed becomes a part of Torah,
but beforehand,
before one has elevated and clarified it,
and from where does the Torah and the Gemara take it –
it is from what people say in the marketplace,
even such a matter –
one must connect it with Torah and with a lesson in the service of Hashem.
And after one has already connected that which people say in the marketplace with Torah
("From where is this matter that people say")
once and a second time and a third time,
for three times establishes a presumption15 –
he can then think that it is already enough;
קען ער דאך מיינען אז ס'איז שוין גענוג;
he argues:
he has already done this three times,
proving that he holds of the Torah of the Baal Shem Tov,
that the world and G‑dliness are one thing,
and consequently one must connect every thing in the world with Torah and a lesson in divine service –
They tell him,
that in the topic in Bava Kama regarding "From where is this matter that people say" it is not only three times but many more times,
regarding each matter individually –
which teaches him that it is not sufficient to conduct oneself this way once,
twice,
three times,
rather regarding every single matter that he hears in the world,
he must connect it with Torah.
This applies even regarding worldly matters;
וואס דאס רעדט זיך אפילו בנוגע עניני העולם;
And all the more so is this regarding matters of Torah and mitzvos,
including also the matter of Blessing the Month,
and the matter of the Shabbat of Blessing which is a custom of Israel and it is Torah –
every single detail must be connected with it to yield a lesson in the service of Hashem.
The lesson of the entirety of the matter of the Shabbat of Blessing
(the common denominator of all Shabbasos of Blessing)
is –
איז –
as instituted by my revered father-in-law,
the Rebbe16,
that then one should hold a farbrengen and speak and accept resolutions regarding the month which is blessed on this Shabbat. And also –
reciting Tehillim early before the prayer on the Shabbat of Blessing. Which,
as is said in the "Yehi Ratzon" after Tehillim,
the five books of Tehillim correspond to the five books of the Torah,
which includes within itself the entire Torah,
the Written Torah and the Oral Torah.
And especially since the farbrengen
(on the Shabbat of Blessing)
is in a holy place,
"a place where prayer is cultivated" and "a place where Torah is cultivated"17,
a synagogue and a study hall. And as we see that now in most synagogues they also study Torah classes,
and in public –
"Hashem loves the gates of Zion18...
Hashem loves the gates that are distinguished in halachah"19.
When one studies Torah classes in public it has a special superiority. As the Alter Rebbe also explains in Iggeres HaKodesh20 regarding the superiority of studying Torah with ten,
as our Sages21 derive this from "within within"22.
And there the Alter Rebbe adds a great novelty,
that there is also a superiority in engaging in mitzvos specifically with ten. For which one seeks a source –
in addition to the source that the Alter Rebbe says it here in Iggeres HaKodesh.
Even if one does not find a source for this23 in a second place,
this does not, heaven forbid, detract from the matter. One does it also because the Alter Rebbe writes so;
איז דאס ח"ו ניט גורע אין דעם ענין. מ'טוט עס אויך וויבאלד אז דער אלטער רבי שרייבט אזוי;
but then it is only out of acceptance of the yoke. The intention is that this should also permeate all of a person's faculties,
and one should have an intellectual explanation for it,
which then one fulfills it with greater relish.
The lesson of this particular and specific matter of this Shabbat of Blessing –
the Shabbat of Blessing of the month of Kislev:
The Shabbat of Blessing of the month of Kislev blesses the day of Rosh
Chodesh Kislev. Which includes within itself all the days and matters of the month,
just as a head, in its simple sense, includes within itself and leads the intellect that is in the head, all the limbs and matters of the body24.
The special matter in the month of Kislev which is understood by seemingly everyone,
even for a simple person who does not know about the Torah of the Baal Shem Tov,
and does not know that the revelation of the Torah of Chassidus was in the month of Kislev,
is –
איז –
Chanukah,
which was revealed even before the Torah of the Baal Shem Tov,
and all the more so before the revelation of Chassidus in the month of Kislev,
which came some time after the Baal Shem Tov.
Regarding Chanukah every Jew knows,
and also knows that it is a lofty matter.
It follows,
that when Rosh Chodesh Kislev arrives,
which includes within itself and leads all the days and matters of the month –
a new divine service connected with Chanukah begins.
And this is the lesson of the Shabbat of Blessing of the month of Kislev –
that while still standing on this Shabbat,
before Rosh Chodesh Kislev,
one must prepare and make a preparation for the new divine service that begins on Rosh Chodesh Kislev.
Everything is also found in halachah. One also finds the matter of preparation in halachah:
Every matter of holiness requires preparation25,
up to a "great preparation"26,
because it has special importance. As this is regarding the Shabbat meal,
that specifically for the Shabbat meal one must have preparation,
and likewise for the Yom Tov meal,
in contrast to the weekday meal,
even though that too is a meal,
and one recites a blessing over it,
even including Birkat HaMazon,
which is the only blessing from the Torah27,
however, since the meal does not have special importance –
one does not make preparation for it.
And as the Gemara28 says that "Shabbat does not prepare for Yom Tov",
because "Yom Tov is also called Shabbat and requires its meal to be designated and its designation on a weekday,
but a weekday meal is not significant and designation does not apply to it etc."29
Likewise, it is also understood regarding
(Rosh)
Chodesh Kislev,
since then a new holy service begins,
which has special importance,
one must have preparation for it in the days preceding it.
When the day of Rosh Chodesh Kislev arrives, one can no longer make preparation for it then,
because one is already in the days of the month itself –
one must make the preparation for it in the days preceding it,
beginning from Shabbat Mevarchim Chodesh Kislev,
which occurs in the last days of the month of Cheshvan
(before Rosh Chodesh Kislev).
What the matter of preparation on Shabbat Mevarchim for Rosh Chodesh is, is common to all Shabbatot Mevarchim and all months;
וואס דער ענין ההכנה בשבת מברכים צו ראש חודש איז א צד השוה אין אלע שבת מברכים און פון אלע חדשים;
the preparation that applies specifically and particularly to the month of Kislev is –
in connection with Chanukah,
as above.
And the preparation for the month of Kislev and Chanukah is in the month of Cheshvan. And in this too there is a lesson. With an introduction:
The month of Cheshvan,
when one blesses the month of Kislev,
and the month of Kislev,
are not at all similar to each other,
and on the contrary –
they are quite opposite:
The month of Kislev contains within it the matter of Chanukah,
which is a special and most exalted matter,
in contrast to the month of Cheshvan which contains within it no special days or matters.
Moreover:
The month of Cheshvan is the only month of all the months of the year that contains no special matters,
in contrast to all the other months of the year, each of which contains special days and matters:
The month of Tishrei contains within it several special days, to the extent that the month is "abundant in festivals"30. The month of Kislev contains Chanukah
(as above).
The month of Tevet contains within it the Tenth of Tevet. And indeed,
it is a fast day,
but in the future these days will be turned31 "to joy and gladness and good festivals"32,
and a wise person is "one who sees what is born"33,
and every Jew is from "a wise and understanding people"34 –
every Jew sees immediately in the Tenth of Tevet that this day will be for joy and gladness and a good festival. And at the time the Tenth of Tevet arrives, every Jew knows that this is a time of favor35,
and the intention is to transform the day to joy and gladness and a good festival.
The month of Shevat contains within it the Fifteenth of Shevat,
the New Year for Trees36,
which is connected with several customs etc.
The month of Adar, the entire month is connected with the matter of "until one does not know"37.
In the month of Nisan they were redeemed and in Nisan they are destined to be redeemed38.
The month of Iyar contains within it – in addition to Pesach Sheni –
a special matter that is not found in any of the other months of the year39:
Every day of the month of Iyar is connected with a mitzvah –
the mitzvah of Sefirat HaOmer. And this is even more than in the month of Tishrei and the month of Nisan:
The month of Tishrei is only abundant in festivals,
but not all days are festival days.
And likewise in the month of Nisan;
ועד"ז אין חודש ניסן;
in contrast, in the month of Iyar every day of the month is connected with a mitzvah.
The month of Sivan is "the third month" when was given "the third Torah to the third people"40.
The month of Tamuz contains within it the Seventeenth of Tamuz. And in addition to this, that in this month there is the day on which the Tablets were given,
for which one does not make joy and a festival because afterwards the Tablets were broken41,
nevertheless, the wise person sees what is born –
he sees how it will be revealed that the Seventeenth of Tamuz is joy and gladness and a good festival
(as above regarding the Tenth of Tevet).
In the month of Av, in addition to this, is the day of Tisha B'Av, which
will be a very great festival in the future,
there is then the Fifteenth of Av,
concerning which "there were no festivals for Israel like the Fifteenth of Av and Yom Kippur"42.
And in the month of Elul, the King is found in the field throughout the entire month43.
And other matters in all of them.
However, the month of Cheshvan is the only exception, a month when there are no special days or matters.
And one must arrive at the Yalkut Shimoni44 that then will be the dedication of the third Beis HaMikdash. But it does not come out revealed in any special day in the month so that one should see that the day is a special day.
Exactly the opposite of the month of Iyar,
in which every day there is a mitzvah. And the month of Cheshvan and the month of Iyar are parallel to each other:
Both are the second month,
only Cheshvan is the second month of the winter months,
and Iyar is the second month of the summer months.
And in particular, as this is emphasized in the wine of Torah in Rashi on Parshas Noach,
where he says several times according to the two opinions of Rabbi Eliezer and Rabbi Yehoshua regarding the flood,
whether the Torah speaks of the winter months or the summer months. And specifically Rashi says it45 in connection with the month of Cheshvan and the month of Iyar.
The lesson from this:
When it is said that one must prepare in the month of Cheshvan for the month of Kislev,
it brings out a very great novelty:
The service of the month of Kislev is connected with Chanukah
(as above).
And Chanukah is connected with the dedication of the Temple
and the dedication of the altar
(and because of this it is called "Chanukah")46,
a most elevated matter,
to the extent that it is said of the Chanukah lights that "they are never nullified"47,
they are eternal,
without limit.
And this is even higher than the lights in the Mishkan,
in the first Beis HaMikdash and in the second Beis HaMikdash.
Nevertheless, it is said that the preparations for the month of Kislev must be made in the preceding month,
in the month of Cheshvan,
a month that is exactly the opposite of the month of Kislev,
because in Cheshvan there are no special matters.
A Jew could fall into despair,
he makes the calculation:
How can he prepare himself for such a month as Kislev in the month of Cheshvan,
when there are no special days or matters?!
They tell him,
on the contrary –
from this very thing is the wonderful lesson of how much a Jew can accomplish:
Since they tell him that he must prepare in the month of Cheshvan for the month of Kislev,
it is a proof that he has the abilities for this,
because "I only ask according to their ability"48. And since in the month of Cheshvan there are no special days or matters and nevertheless they tell him that he must then prepare for the month of Kislev,
this is a tremendous novelty that brings out the tremendous abilities that he possesses,
that on his own he can prepare in this month for the exalted month of Kislev,
and for Chanukah, whose lights are never nullified!
Since the month of Kislev is a most exalted month,
the preparations for it must surely be through an elevated person,
and he knows where he stands and also knows that he is in the month of Cheshvan when there are no special matters –
so how can he then prepare for the month of Kislev and for Chanukah?!
It is understandable in the month of Elul,
how one can
prepare for the month of Tishrei,
because the entire month is the King in the field,
and similarly in the month of Adar,
it is understandable how one can prepare for the month of Nissan,
"connecting redemption to redemption"49,
because in the month of Adar there is the matter of "until one does not know",
and then "they fulfilled what they had already accepted",
"from here a great declaration for the Torah"<sup>50</sup>;
"מכאן מודעא רבה לאורייתא" 50;
However, in the month of Cheshvan, the fact that a Jew can then prepare himself for the month of Kislev and Chanukah,
demonstrates how much has been invested in a Jew,
that standing in a month when there are no auspicious days,
i.e., that the time is not then assisting him,
he can on his own accomplish through his service the appropriate preparations for the month of Kislev and Chanukah.
To the extent that he even accomplishes the most elevated matter – the preparations for lights that are never nullified.
That is, the highest level
(Chanukah in the month of Kislev)
is connected with the lowest level
(the situation in the month of Cheshvan when there are no special days or matters).
And this is a lesson about the greatness of a Jew and how much he can accomplish,
that he himself has been entrusted to make the preparations in the month of Cheshvan for the month of Kislev,
without assistance from the time.
And this is a simple lesson that is understood simply by everyone,
even for a simple person. Those who understand the secrets of Torah,
it is understood that for them the lesson is understood in a more elevated manner,
but even for them the main thing is how it comes down into actual deed,
because the deed is the main thing51.
What this is, is the lesson derived from the Shabbat of Blessing the Month of Kislev,
which always occurs in the month of Cheshvan –
the greatness of the power that a Jew possesses to begin making the preparations for the month of Kislev and Chanukah in the month of Cheshvan etc.
And this comes together with the blessing of the month on Shabbat Mevarchim,
with all the six expressions,
which bless
and draw down power for the service throughout the month of Kislev,
until Chanukah.
And through this one then comes to Chanukah with all the elevations therein,
the dedication of the Holy Temple and the dedication of the altar. Until these lights are never nullified.
Until one comes to the time when there will be the dedication of the third Holy Temple,
when there will also be the elevation of the Chanukah lights that they are "never nullified",
and also an elevation in the lights of the Holy Temple.
Because the matter of the dedication of the Temple on Chanukah was through the Chashmonaim who were High Priests,
who kindle the Menorah.
And this is connected with the service of every single Jew,
because every Jew has within him the priest within him,
until the High Priest within him,
as it is stated in the well-known verses
(as discussed many times)
on the verse52 "And you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests" –
that priests here means High Priests53,
which means that not only does every Jew have within him the High Priest within him,
but this is his entire existence
("And you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests").
He only needs to bring it out from potential to actual in revelation.
Then he effects the dedication of the Temple and the kindling of the lights.
And may it be His will that the dedication of the third Holy Temple be speedily in our days, literally,
still in the month of Cheshvan,
as it is stated in Yalkut Shimoni that in this month will be the dedication of the third Holy Temple,
for which in the month of Cheshvan there still remain three days,
and especially if one also includes the thirtieth day of the month of Cheshvan –
then still in this month can be the dedication of the third Holy Temple.
And those who think that this is mockery –
may a spirit from on high be poured upon them,
and they should know that it is not mockery, Heaven forbid.
And as they themselves said a few hours ago in the Amidah prayer "May our eyes behold Your return to Zion". For when one stands in the Amidah prayer one stands
before the King of kings, the Holy One, blessed be He –
it is a certain thing that then mockery is not applicable, Heaven forbid,
and not even levity,
and not even a "whence would it come"!
And may it be His will
(as discussed many times)
that from this speech here it should come down into actual deed below ten handbreadths –
the true and complete redemption through our righteous Moshiach,
speedily in our days, literally.
The particular and special matter of the Shabbat of Blessing the Month of Kislev in this year is,
that it is on the twenty-seventh of Cheshvan,
and Shabbat Parshat Chayei Sarah.
The special matter of the twenty-seventh of Cheshvan need not be sought,
as discussed many times that today there are already books that spare the trouble of searching for what happened on each day. They gather all the matters that happened on each day as it is stated in the Written Torah and the Oral Torah etc.,
consequently, with their help it is easier to know the special matter of each and every day.
Regarding the twenty-seventh of Cheshvan it is explicitly stated in the Written Torah,
in Parshat Noach,
what then happened:
"And in the second month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month, the earth dried" after the flood. And Rashi brings down54 the two opinions of Rabbi Eliezer and Rabbi Yehoshua,
whether this refers to the winter months or the summer months,
and the first opinion that he brings is the opinion of Rabbi Eliezer that this refers to the winter months,
for the first opinion that Rashi brings down is closer to the plain meaning of the verse
(as discussed many times) –
it comes out that "in the second month55, on the twenty-seventh day of the month, the earth dried" refers to the twenty-seventh of Cheshvan.
On the first of the month was "the waters were dried up from upon the earth"56
(which is why the dove that Noach sent before this – "did not return to him again"57),
and Rashi56 explains "dried up –
a kind of clay was formed, the surface of which became crusted";
נעשה כמין טיט שקרמו פני' של מעלה";
but "the earth was dry",
"it became proper dry land"55,
so that the settlement of the world could exist,
was on the twenty-seventh of Cheshvan.
Every matter in Torah,
also the narratives of Torah,
are eternal,
as the Rogatchover writes57, until
(as he writes58)
that even a thing that is stated in the Torah which was later nullified
(like Moshe's oath to Yisro59)
is also an eternal matter. And therefore, in this there is an eternal lesson for every individual.
One must understand what is the eternal lesson from this story that on the twenty-seventh of Cheshvan "the earth was dry" –
seemingly, what happened happened. What does this have to do with the twenty-seventh of Cheshvan in every single year? And this must be understood simply, even for a simple person.
The explanation of this:
There are times when a person finds himself in a state of "the Flood" simply. And especially when one explains to him what the Alter Rebbe elucidates in Torah Ohr60,
and at greater length in the continuation "Mayim Rabim" of the Rebbe Maharash61
(this year being one hundred years since his passing),
that "many waters"62
(the waters of the Flood)
are the troubles and worries of livelihood and the thoughts about worldly matters, etc.
For just as thought has no cessation,
so too the troubles and worries and thoughts are in a manner that they have no cessation,
"many waters".
In truth, there must indeed be the "
(and the blessing of Hashem)
in all that you do"63,
involvement in matters of livelihood,
but this must be in a manner of "without a heart and a heart"64.
But with him, there are "many waters" –
he is troubled and worried about livelihood,
"from where will my help come"65,
from where will he receive his livelihood.
What does it mean "from where will he receive his livelihood"?!
He is already past Bar Mitzvah,
and past "the son of twenty for pursuit"66,
and several years after that,
and he is alive and existing,
he lives,
and he does not live by miracles,
it must be that he has received his livelihood –
so what is he worried about
now?!
And even when one proves to him that he has from where to receive his livelihood and has nothing to worry about –
he worries about how to receive even more livelihood! Until this is for him "many waters" –
his mind constantly thinks in a manner of "it will not be still" about how to receive more and more,
and he employs all kinds of schemes in this!
Until even during the study of Torah and during prayer he thinks about this.
And then there are those who do this even with a silken lining,
and with them there is the rationalization that they are so involved in livelihood in order to be able to give more charity,
and through this make a dwelling place for the Holy One, blessed be He, in the lower realms!
You want to make a dwelling place for the Holy One, blessed be He, in the lower realms? You are now studying Torah,
you are now praying to the Most High,
through this you make a dwelling place in the lower realms –
so why are you thinking about livelihood during the act?!
He argues,
that the intention is to make a dwelling place for the Holy One, blessed be He, in the lower realms in matters of commerce and livelihood!
One tells him,
that there is an order in this:
first there must be going to the synagogue,
and then from the synagogue to the study hall67,
and then "conduct yourself with them in a manner of worldly occupation"67,
and specifically then one must engage in commerce and in that make a dwelling place for the Holy One, blessed be He, in the lower realms. But beforehand, one must pray and study and during the act not think about commerce and livelihood.
His character trait, however, is that he is a hasty person,
he rushes,
without any limitations,
and already in the midst of prayer and in the midst of Torah study he thinks about matters of commerce. In the middle of praying he thinks about wood! Contrary to the well-known story about one of the early Chassidim.
Until as soon as he awakens from sleep,
before he says "Modeh Ani",
he thinks about the
matters of commerce!
Until he does not only act contrary to what his good inclination wants,
but also not as his evil inclination wants:
from the perspective of his evil inclination, he could wait until after the recitation of "Modeh Ani" and then think about these matters,
but he already thinks about it as soon as he awakens from sleep,
even before "Modeh Ani",
which even his evil inclination does not want!
He speaks about the directive of the Rebbe Maharash68 that it must be from the outset a leap into holiness,
and by him it is exactly the opposite –
from the outset a leap into the side of impurity!
He drags his evil inclination lower than the evil inclination wants!
As soon as he wakes up from sleep he cannot restrain himself and immediately thinks about his business matters.
Because "Modeh Ani" is contrary to his nature,
therefore at the moment he wakes up from sleep he cannot say "Modeh Ani" immediately,
rather, as soon as he has just awakened from sleep,
his mind has just turned
(overtly),
his thinking has turned to swindling –
he immediately thinks how he will swindle and deceive;
טראכט ער גלייך ווי ער וועט שווינדלען און דרייען;
a new invention occurs to him how to make more money etc.
And only afterwards can he say "Modeh Ani" and thank the Most High for having given him the powers!
Heaven forbid –
ר"ל –
he drags his evil inclination into the lowest pit!
And as mentioned,
his evil inclination could wait with thinking about these matters for a few moments until after he says "Modeh Ani," which is only a few words,
it takes a few moments to say. Especially since he does not concentrate on the meanings;
נעמט עס עטלעכע רגעים צו זאגן. ובפרט אז ער האלט ניט דעמולט בא כוונות;
he cannot restrain himself and must, immediately upon waking from sleep,
even before "Modeh Ani,"
think about business.
And there is no need to elaborate on a matter that is distressing and alarming.
In any case –
In any case –
by him there are "many waters,"
he lies in a flood,
he is preoccupied with worries and thoughts of livelihood and this world.
He can nevertheless fall into despair:
he lies in a flood,
"many waters,"
already for a length of time,
until as it was literally –
the flood lasted an entire year,
and not only a lunar year,
but an additional eleven days,
a solar year –
he can fall into despair,
that he has already been so long in preoccupations and worries of livelihood,
he cannot emerge from this.
Or on the other hand:
he can think –
since one who transgressed and repeated it, it is permitted to him!
Oh, this is only a question in the Gemara69
(that it is permitted to him),
but the conclusion of the Gemara is that only "it becomes to him like something permitted"
(with a comparative kaf) –
he argues that he is not such a great scholar that he needs to know the conclusion of the Gemara as well. A question in the Gemara is enough for him! For even a question in the Torah was given to Moses at Sinai,
and a foolish thing would not stand in the Torah even as a question, Heaven forbid, as it were,
therefore, since there is a question in the Torah that one who transgressed and repeated it is permitted to him – that is enough for him!
To this comes the directive of the 27th of Cheshvan,
when "the earth was dry" –
that the flood must end,
the "many waters" of worries and preoccupations and thoughts of livelihood and this world –
Enough,
enough of exile,
enough of the flood!
And even if an entire year has already passed,
a lunar year and a solar year –
afterwards "the earth was dry,"
the flood ends.
Another directive of the 27th of Cheshvan –
from the matter that was also then
(since "the earth was dry")
the command of the Holy One, blessed be He, to Noah after Noah and his household and all the animals etc. had been in the ark for an entire year: "Go out of the ark, you and your wife, and your sons and your sons' wives with you,
every living thing that is with you of all flesh, of fowl and of cattle and of every creeping thing that creeps on the earth, bring out with you, and they shall swarm on the earth and be fruitful and multiply on the earth":70
It can be a situation that someone finds himself in "Noah's ark" –
he studies Chassidus,
and the intellectual understanding of Chassidus,
and is immersed in it,
and he thinks he understands it,
and he brings proofs that he understands etc.,
and it may be that it is indeed so –
he can argue:
Why do they demand of him that "your springs burst forth outward" –
he is after lying in the springs themselves,
and he has never gone into the outward –
so why must he go into the outward,
why must he go out of Noah's ark?!
By him it is the times of Mashiach,
and perhaps it is indeed so,
similar to what was in Noah's ark,
as explained in Chassidus71
(and in the discourses of the Rebbe Maharash72)
that in the ark it was similar to the state of "and the wolf shall dwell with the lamb etc."73 in the future to come –
so why does he need to go out of the ark?!
What need does he have to learn Torah from the mouth of Moshiach in the future to come?
Does he not now study the discourses of the Nasi of our generation?!
Why must he go out of the ark,
he can remain there and there everything will be good for him,
Similar to how it will be in the future to come,
as it was by Noach in the ark,
that he did not need to come to sowing, plowing, and reaping and to all the thirty-nine labors,
and the labors connected with the order of bread74,
he only needed to provide food to all the animals in their proper time and season.
And especially since after the exit from the ark there will be a descent in the world,
and therefore there will then be the permission of eating meat75,
as was discussed at length once76.
And that which is demanded of him that he should also do with his portion in the world –
were there not in the ark all the wild animals and domestic animals and the birds of the heavens,
including even snakes and scorpions,
and also all vegetation77,
and among all of them there was a likeness to the state of the future to come,
"and the wolf shall dwell with the lamb" –
did he not then also fulfill his portion in the world,
so why must he go out of the ark?!
What does he have to go out into the world –
when he stands above the world,
in the level of "these are the generations of Peretz"78
(which will be in the future to come)
which is higher than "these are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created"79.
Regarding this there is the instruction from the twenty-seventh of Cheshvan –
that there must be "go out of the ark, you and your wife and your sons etc. all the living things that are with you, of all flesh, of fowl and of beast and of every creeping thing etc. bring out with you etc."
One might think that in the ark one has Moshiach,
and it is the times of Moshiach,
and it could be that it is indeed so –
but the intention is that one should go out of the ark into the world and there establish the settlement of the world and the perfection of the world.
One might think that it is sufficient that he himself should go out of the ark into the world in order to act in the world,
or at least that he should go out together with your wife and your sons and the wives of your sons with you so that they should help him in his actions in the world –
but why must there also be "bring out with you" "all the living things that are with you, of all flesh, of fowl and of beast and of every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth",
including also snakes and scorpions,
when the snakes and scorpions go out into the world one sees what becomes of them –
snakes and scorpions literally –
so why must he also take them out of the ark?!
Nevertheless, he is told,
that even they must go out of the ark into the world,
because this is the intention,
and specifically then is "a new world he saw"80.
A new world,
higher not only relative to the world before the flood,
but also higher than the state that was in the ark!
Specifically through going out into the world and there making the settlement of the world and the perfection of the world,
one reveals "these are the generations of Peretz",
the drawing down of infinity into the world.
As this was by Noach literally,
that when he was in the ark there was a restriction regarding marital relations81,
be fruitful and multiply,
and specifically when he went out of the ark he received the renewed command of "be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth"82
(although also beforehand there was the same command to Adam the first83).
For be fruitful and multiply is the power of infinity that exists below84.
And the matter of the drawing down of infinity was not only by Noach himself,
but he also drew it down into the world,
through that which he offered the sacrifices,
and "and Hashem smelled the pleasing aroma" was "and Hashem said etc. I will no longer etc."85,
"while all the days of the earth, seed and harvest etc. shall not cease"86,
and "shall not cease" is the matter of eternity,
infinity,
as explained in Chassidus87,
that within time itself the matter of above time was revealed,
eternity.
In contrast, in the ark there was indeed "the wolf dwells with the lamb" in the likeness of the future to come,
but this was with measurement and limitation:
the ark was measured and limited to a specific length and width and height,
no less and no more;
לא פחות ולא יותר;
and there was the restriction regarding marital relations,
as above.
Specifically afterwards, when one went out of the ark into the world, the matter of infinity was revealed,
"these are the generations of Peretz",
"and you shall spread forth to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south"88.
And this is the instruction from the twenty-seventh of Cheshvan regarding – the
What those who hold at the highest extreme [hold],
in addition to the instruction from 27 Cheshvan for those who hold at the lowest extreme,
those troubled by worries of livelihood
(as above from section 2 onward).
And both instructions apply to all Jews,
because there are many Jews,
and their opinions are not all equal89,
certainly among them there are those who belong to the highest extreme and those who belong to the lowest extreme.
What actually are both instructions for every Jew:
It is unavoidable that at least one moment a day every Jew should hold at the highest extreme,
that he finds himself in "Noach's ark" and for him it is the times of Mashiach.
And it is known what the Rebbe, my father-in-law, the Rebbe said,
that just as one may not speak lashon hara about another,
one may not speak lashon hara about oneself,
and one must also know one's own virtues.
Thus the instruction regarding this,
that one must go out from the ark and take out all matters from the ark etc.
On the other hand, the lowest extreme also exists in every person,
according to his measure and according to his level –
thus the instruction regarding this is that "the earth became dry",
and the flood
("mighty waters")
must end.
The second matter specific and unique to this Shabbat is,
Shabbat Parshat Chayei Sarah. And from this too there must be an instruction in divine service:
The name of the parshah is "Chayei Sarah". And "Chayei Sarah" indeed consists of many years,
"one hundred years and twenty years and seven years, the years of the life of Sarah",
but the name of the parshah is that all the years are included in one general principle –
"Chayei Sarah".
And superficially this is not understood:
All these years of Sarah are indeed separate years in which different events occurred –
how then are they all included in one word – "Chayei
"Chayei Sarah"?
There was a time in her life when she was with Pharaoh,
a time when she was with Avimelech,
a time before she came to the Land of Israel,
while still in Ur Kasdim,
the time after "Go for yourself from your land etc.",
the time of "the souls they made in Charan"90 as Rashi explains that "Avraham converted the men and Sarah converted the women",
then the time when she was in the Land of Israel,
then the time when she received the news of the Akeidah,
and a time when she spoke with the angels etc. etc. –
how then are all these separate different times included in one name –
"Chayei Sarah"?
And especially after Rashi explains "the years of the life of Sarah –
all of them were equally good":
How can one say that all these different times and the different occurrences in the life of Sarah were "all of them equally good"?
The explanation of this is,
as is understood even by a simple person:
Everyone understands simply that what constituted the life of Sarah,
what she lived for,
from what she had vitality,
pleasure and delight –
was not from physical matters,
from the fact that she found herself in the house of Pharaoh,
that he ruled over a mighty kingdom,
and he praised her,
for her beauty etc. –
this had no place in her,
and on the contrary –
it was a great distress to her.
And likewise regarding the other physical matters,
they are all not matters that constituted the life of Sarah,
her life and delight.
What did she live for and what was her passion –
it was that with her there was "a lamp burning from one Shabbat eve to the next Shabbat eve",
"a blessing present in the dough" and "a cloud attached to the tent"91
(due to her modesty).
This everyone understands,
even a simple person,
even one who has not learned Rashi,
even, by way of distinction, a gentile –
that the life of Sarah,
what she lived for and what was her passion,
was not in physical matters with which she occupied herself,
those were external matters in her life,
rather she lived and was passionate about spiritual matters and matters of holiness.
When one asks a Jewish girl,
even one who is a captive infant among the nations:
What constituted the life and vitality in the kitchen of her grandmother named Sarah? Everyone will understand on their own that Sarah did not lie in the beautiful garment she wore,
or that the part of the shoe under the heel should be an inch more or less higher than the rest of the shoe,
and should be of this color or that color, etc. –
Rather, she lived in something entirely different:
in spiritual matters and holy things.
She lay in that she should wear a sheitel,
or cover her hair in another manner
(the matter of modesty),
and in that there should be "a lamp lit from Sabbath eve to Sabbath eve",
and in "a blessing found in the dough",
the kashrut of eating and drinking.
From this it is understood how one can call all the years and all the various occurrences with one name "Chayei Sarah" –
because in all the years of Sarah and in all the situations in which she stood,
with her there was the same "Chayei Sarah",
she always lived in the same matters,
in spiritual matters. Whether when she was with Pharaoh,
whether with Avimelech,
whether in all the other situations in which she was during her life
(as enumerated in their part earlier),
all these differences of situations were not the essence of her life,
they are only external matters;
זיי זיינען נאר ענינים חיצונים;
her main vitality and life was always in one thing –
matters of holiness.
"The years of the life of Sarah" are indeed separate and different years,
in which she was in different situations;
אין וועלכע זי איז געווען אין פארשידענע מצבים;
but "Chayei Sarah" is one thing – all
All "Chayei Sarah" are connected with her vitality and her passion in matters of holiness.
And therefore one can also say that "Chayei Sarah" "were all equally good",
because all her years were equal in that she lived and was passionate in matters of holiness.
And this is like what is explained in Torah Ohr on our parshah92 from the Zohar93 regarding Avraham Avinu,
that he was "come with days"94, –
"in those supernal days" –
all his days were in perfection,
filled with Torah and mitzvos.
Therefore Sarah's all her days are called "Chayei Sarah",
"were all equally good",
because all her days and years were for one thing –
she lived and was passionate in matters of holiness.
Nevertheless, one does not say "Chai Sarah"
(singular form),
but "Chayei Sarah"
(plural form),
because in the very fact that she lived and lay in matters of holiness there are lines:
"a lamp lit from Sabbath eve to Sabbath eve",
"a blessing found in the dough",
and "a cloud tied over the tent"
(modesty),
three lines and three pillars. And on these three lines and pillars stands the world of
(one person -) Sarah.
And regarding the time when Sarah was with Pharaoh,
about which time one cannot say that "the life of Sarah was",
that there was her vitality and her passion –
one can rectify even that time,
through the fact that there is love of Israel and unity of Israel:
When one helps out another Jew who finds himself in a situation where he is together with "Pharaoh" or "Avimelech",
and one gives him tzedakah,
through which one brings about "reviving the soul of the poor",
one has revived him and enlivened him and set him in a shining corner –
then the Above One acts measure for measure and revives him95. Consequently, "Chayei Sarah" applies also when she finds herself together with Pharaoh or Avimelech.
And this is not a matter of a decree of the verse,
but it is understood intellectually:
Since one believes in a Creator of the world,
one knows that "the Judge of all the earth" will certainly "do justice"96,
consequently, when one revives the soul of the poor,
the Above One does so with him.
This is the lesson that one takes out from "Chayei Sarah",
in what a person needs to lie and with what he needs to live.
And when a Jew acts in this manner with toil,
it is a certainty that "I have toiled and I have found"97,
in a manner of finding more than he anticipated.
From the portion of Chayei Sarah we come to the portion of V’Eleh Toldos Yitzchak,
which is connected to the true and complete redemption,
because then they will say of Yitzchak, “For You are our father”98,
and through his merit the redemption comes.
And simply –
that through doing all these matters mentioned above, one brings closer the true and complete redemption through Moshiach Tzidkeinu,
and out of joy and a good heart,
until “everlasting joy upon their heads”99,
“then our mouth will be filled with laughter”100
(connected with Yitzchak101),
speedily in our days, literally, and in our time.
Here is the place to complete what we began to speak about in the previous farbrengen102 regarding the matter of anointing a king,
in connection with the twentieth of Cheshvan,
the birthday of the Rebbe
(the Maharash) N”E,
which this year marks one hundred years since the beginning of his leadership103. For the histalkus of the Rebbe Maharash was in the year 5643,
and “the sun rises and the sun sets”104,
so that immediately105 the leadership of his son, the Rebbe N”E, who succeeded him, begins.
And regarding this, a question was asked,
for seemingly,
according to what the Nasi of our generation writes in the “Chapter Headings” of the chronicles of his life106,
“Begin from the night of Rosh Hashanah 5654, established his place of prayer in the synagogue in the place where his father, the Rebbe Maharash, prayed (–
he prayed in his designated place in the synagogue during his father’s lifetime)”,
it should follow that the beginning of his leadership was
(not from the year 5643, but)
5654?
And this was connected with the discussion in Halacha regarding the anointing of a king who is the son of a king.
The leadership of the Rebbe N”E is connected with the matter of “your wellsprings spread forth outward”,
through which “the King Moshiach will come”107,
alluding to the matter of anointing,
and likewise the leadership of his successor, the Nasi of our generation –
which also has a special connection to this Shabbos
(in addition to that which it follows (what was discussed in) the previous Shabbos,
for in today’s haftorah108 it speaks about the anointing of King Shlomo.
It was discussed that a king who is the son of a king does not require anointing109,
but the plain meaning is not that the matter of anointing does not apply to him,
rather that the anointing of his father is a continuing effect upon him. As the Rogatchover elaborates on this110
(as has already been discussed at length once,
and it was also mentioned briefly in the previous farbrengen),
with the distinction between the Rambam and Rashi111.
But what about when there is his older brother, etc., and it is not clear who is the king –
then,
the king who is the son of a king requires anointing. As the Rambam brings112 examples of this,
beginning with “Therefore they anointed Shlomo because of Adoniyahu”.
It was explained there,
that according to the Rambam’s view,
the anointing of the king who is the son of a king is not to bestow upon him the matter of kingship,
rather it is only to remove a secondary matter,
“in order to eliminate the dispute”.
This is only according to the Rambam’s view<sup>113</sup>;
דאס איז נאר לשיטת הרמב"ם 113;
Rashi’s view113 is,
that the anointing of a king who is the son of a king over whom there is a dispute is to make him a king114.
The first example that the Rambam brings,
as above,
is from the anointing of Shlomo because of Adoniyahu –
which is what is discussed in today’s haftorah.
Thus from this story in the haftorah there is seemingly a proof for the Rambam’s view:
In the haftorah108 it discusses at length the dispute of Adoniyahu to become king,
and how the prophet Nosson said that Shlomo would be the king after Dovid,
and King Dovid made an oath that “Shlomo your son shall reign after me”115. And through this they prevented Adoniyahu from becoming king,
but only Shlomo. Afterwards it is related
(in Melachim)
how they actually anointed Shlomo
(during Dovid’s lifetime) –
but the story
(about the anointing of Shlomo)
was not included in the haftorah.
And seemingly:
The haftorah comes to tell how they ensured that King Shlomo would remain king and not Adoniyahu. So if one were to say that he needed an anointing to bestow upon him the matter of kingship
(but before his anointing he is not a king at all) –
then they should have related in the haftorah the main point –
that afterwards they anointed Shlomo
(which made him a king),
and that should have been the main elaboration?
From the fact that the main length in the haftarah is
about the dispute of Adoniyahu and the statement of Nathan the prophet and the oath of David,
and about the anointing of Shlomo it is not mentioned at all,
this is a proof according to the opinion of the Rambam,
that even a king who is the son of a king over whom there is a dispute inherits the kingship,
and the anointing is only "to settle the dispute."
And therefore there is no need to tell in the haftarah about the anointing of Shlomo –
because in that case,
the main matter that accomplished "to settle the dispute,"
was precisely this that Nathan the prophet said and the oath of his father David about this,
by which it was already clarified to all that Shlomo "will reign...
after me" and the later anointing was only the completion of the matter.
In the opinion of the Rambam itself,
it was also mentioned116,
that he states this law in two places,
and with a variation in language between them:
In Hilchos Klei HaMikdash VeHaOvdim Bo117 the Rambam writes "they anoint him to settle the dispute and to make known to all that this one is the sole king,"
whereas in Hilchos Melachim UMilchamoseihem he writes only "they anoint him to settle the dispute" and omits the second matter
("and to make known to all that this one is the sole king").
And a question was asked about this,
that prima facie the opposite seems logical:
In Hilchos Klei HaMikdash it is discussing
(primarily)
about the anointing oil,
whereas in Hilchos Melachim –
the addition,
"to make known to all that this one is the sole king,"
should have been placed
(not in Hilchos Klei HaMikdash, but)
in Hilchos Melachim?
And as was mentioned then,
that with difficulty one could answer based on the principle118 that the Rambam relies on what he wrote in an earlier place in his book,
and consequently he need not repeat all the details in Hilchos Melachim –
But in addition to this that here it is only about a few words,
there is further and primarily:
The matter of "to make known to all that this one is the sole king" is an essential matter in kingship,
even more than the matter of "to settle the dispute." "To settle the dispute" is to remove an external matter,
whereas
the matter of "to make known to all that this one is the sole king" is a matter in the king himself
(not in another)
that he is one who is "the sole king." So how is it that the Rambam omits this matter in Hilchos Melachim?
As has been discussed several times,
that regarding very simple matters one does not catch on. People wrote entire pilpulim about this and entered into forced and extremely forced interpretations,
and brought from the Rishonim and Acharonim,
but the simple answer,
which is a common-sense reasoning,
they did not fall upon
(from the expression "fell upon the find"119).
When one asks a question,
the first thing,
one begins to search in the Rishonim and Acharonim,
what does the first Rishon say about this matter,
and what does the second say, etc.;
און וואס זאגט דער צווייטער וכו';
why does one not first sit down oneself to learn and think and try to understand the matter... -
The explanation in this:
The difference between Hilchos Klei HaMikdash and Hilchos Melachim is:
In Hilchos Klei HaMikdash it discusses primarily the laws of the anointing oil,
and consequently the laws of a king
(i.e., as a detail in the matter of the anointing oil, the laws of anointing a king are brought).
Whereas in Hilchos Melachim it is the opposite:
There it discusses the laws of kings,
and consequently the laws of the oil,
for one of the laws of a king is –
the anointing of the king.
The difference in this is:
In the matter of the anointing oil,
it only pertains to the kings of the House of David,
because "they do not anoint from it
(from the anointing oil)
for generations except High Priests...
and the kings of the House of David alone"120
(and not the kings of Israel who are anointed with balsam oil121).
That is, in Hilchos Klei HaMikdash it discusses only in connection with the anointing of the kings of the House of David;
ד.ה. אין הל' כלי המקדש רעדט זיך נאר בקשר מיט משיחת מלכי בית דוד;
whereas in Hilchos Melachim,
it discusses all kings –
both the kings of the House of David and the kings of Israel,
as the Rambam there elaborates also on the laws of the kings of Israel.
And based on this the aforementioned difference in the language of the Rambam is understood:
The matter of "this one is the sole king" –
that only he is the king –
applies only regarding the kings of the House of David. Because at the time when there were kings of Israel,
there were also kings of the House of David in Jerusalem. Regarding the kings of the House of David – but
the reality can exist that "this one is the sole one."
And therefore:
In the Laws of the Temple Vessels,
where it discusses the anointing of the kings of the House of David,
the Rambam says that the anointing of a king who is the son of a king accomplishes two things:
"to remove the dispute and to inform everyone that this one is the king alone";
"לסלק המחלוקת ולהודיע לכל שזהו מלך לבדו";
however, in the Laws of Kings,
where it discusses kings in general –
he cannot also state the detail of "to inform that this one is the king alone"
(which does not apply to the kings of Israel),
and therefore he says only the matter of "to remove the dispute."
According to this explanation, another difficulty in the order of the Rambam will also be resolved:
When the Rambam states the laws of anointing a king in the Laws of the Temple Vessels,
he writes earlier120:
"They do not anoint from it
(from the anointing oil) except... (and)
the kings of the House of David only." And afterwards,
several halachos after this122,
after he states the law of anointing a king who is the son of a king where there was a dispute,
and brings the examples of Shlomo, Yehoash, and Yehoachaz,
he writes:
"And this that Elisha anointed Yehu, he did not anoint him with the anointing oil, but with balsam oil."
And at first glance it is most perplexing:
This very matter,
that "this that Elisha anointed Yehu, he did not anoint him with the anointing oil, but with balsam oil"
(since he is not from the kings of the House of David) –
the Rambam should have mentioned it immediately in that same halachah,
where he says that "they do not anoint from it except...
the kings of the House of David only." Why does the Rambam wait until several halachos after this to state the matter?
And according to the above, it is simply understood:
In the Laws of the Temple Vessels, it is not the place to state the laws of how one must anoint the kings of Israel. Here it discusses primarily the laws of the anointing oil, and consequently the laws of the king
(and applies only to the kings of the House of David)
and in the Laws of Kings –
it is the opposite:
the laws of kings and consequently the laws of the oil.
Only after this, when the Rambam states the law of anointing a king who is the son of a king "in order to remove the dispute and to inform everyone that this one is the king alone",
he notes "and this that Elisha anointed etc.':",
with which the Rambam negates both matters at once:
that the anointing of Yehu, even though it was also in the category of being involved –
the subject before us
in this halachah –
kingship in a situation of dispute123 –
did not have both matters –
it was not with the anointing oil but with balsam oil;
ס'איז ניט געווען מיט שמן המשחה נאר מיט שמן אפרסמון;
and it did not accomplish the matter of "to inform everyone that this one is the king alone"
(but only "to remove the dispute"*).
Another matter in the anointing of the king that requires clarification,
which also was not addressed,
even though they addressed every minute detail:
The Rambam in the Laws of Kings124 writes that Yehoshua was a king
(whom Moshe Rabbeinu and his court appointed),
and likewise Shaul was a king
(whom Shmuel HaRamasi and his court appointed).
One must understand and have clarification regarding their anointing:
Regarding Yehoshua, it is not stated anywhere that he was anointed**.
The question arises:
He was a king,
why was he not anointed? And if he was anointed –
why is it not stated anywhere in the Torah? There are several matters in the Torah that Moshe did in appointing Yehoshua as king,
the laying of his hands upon him125 etc. –
so why is it not stated in the Torah regarding such an essential matter in the appointment of a king as the matter of anointing?!
And especially since the anointer would have been Moshe Rabbeinu –
because the beginning of Yehoshua's kingship was on the same day that the leadership of Moshe ended,
as the Gemara126 says that "it was the Shabbos of Rabbi Yosi ben Chanina",
and Moshe appointed Yehoshua as king on that same day –
the anointing would have had
an additional special force with a special empowerment.
Regarding the anointing of Shaul, it is explicitly stated in the verse
(in Shmuel127)
"And Shmuel took the flask of oil and poured it on his head and kissed him and said, 'Has it not because Hashem has anointed you etc.'" One must, however, have clarification whether this flask of oil was the anointing oil
(as they later anointed the kings of the House of David)
or balsam oil.
One finds a dispute regarding this between the Radak and the Rambam128:
The Radak in his commentary on the verse in Samuel127 which the Radak is brought in many places in Chassidus in his name,
although in Chassidus they are selective about whom they bring in their name. They do not bring the Radak as much as the Metzudos,
but he too is brought in many places] writes:
"The flask of oil –
this was not the anointing oil, for they anointed from it only the kings of the House of David,
but it was balsam oil."
But the Rambam in Hilchos Melachim129 writes "When they appoint the king, they anoint him with the anointing oil,
as it is said, 'And Shmuel took the flask of oil and poured it on his head and kissed him'",
this verse is stated regarding Shaul. The Rambam assumes that the anointing of Shaul was with the anointing oil
(therefore one can bring from it a proof that "when they appoint the king, they anoint him with the anointing oil").
And the words of the Rambam later that those anointed with the anointing oil
(the kings of the House of David)
have an eternal kingdom –
this refers to the kings after David
(but not regarding the kingdom of Shaul).
According to the Rambam's view regarding the anointing of Shaul
(that it was with the anointing oil,
even though he was not from the kings of the House of David)
the question regarding Yehoshua becomes even stronger: why was he not anointed with the anointing oil?
Just as they anointed Shaul with the anointing oil,
even though he was not from the kings of the House of David,
should they also have anointed Yehoshua with the anointing oil even though he was not from the kings of the House of David?
From the matter that they anointed Shlomo
(because of
Adoniyahu) as the Rambam brings down –
there is a clarification in another matter in connection with the anointing of a king,
and a great novelty in this:
In the Book of Kings it is related
(in continuation of the verses of today's haftarah)
130 that the anointing of Shlomo took place during the lifetime of King David.
A startling question arises:
There is a principle that "one kingdom does not encroach upon another"131,
and it is so extreme,
that when King David asked the Almighty that instead of passing away on Shabbos he should pass away on the first day of the week,
the Almighty answered him "The kingdom of Shlomo your son has already arrived, and one kingdom does not encroach upon another even by a hair's breadth"132 –
so how could the anointing of Shlomo have taken place during the lifetime of King David?!
From this we have a wondrous novelty –
that the anointing of a king can be in a manner that it takes effect after a time. As it was with King Shlomo,
that his anointing during David's lifetime was with the condition that "Shlomo your son will reign after me",
i.e., his anointing was in a manner that it would take effect after a time,
after the death of David.
Based on this, one will understand a perplexing story that my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe, told,
and it has already been printed133,
and as usual, one runs through the sichos like water and then puts it on the shelf and leaves it lying,
even though there may be in it a matter that needs to be understood:
The Rebbe Maharash once related,
that when his middle son,
the Rebbe
(the Rebbe Rashab) of blessed memory,
was three years old,
the Tzemach Tzedek said to the Rebbe Maharash:
"The flask of spiritual oil that our teacher the Baal Shem Tov gave to his holy disciple, our teacher the Maggid of Mezritch, to anoint our holy master, my grandfather, the holy Rebbe, the Alter Rebbe,
to anoint him for the leadership for his generations,
with this power my holy father-in-law was anointed, and I, with this power I have anointed you, and with this power I now anoint him."
As mentioned,
one runs through the sicha and does not
stop at a startling difficulty on this:
There is "one kingdom does not encroach upon another" –
so how could the anointing of the Rebbe Maharash have taken place during the lifetime of the Tzemach Tzedek,
when the Tzemach Tzedek was the Nasi?!
And furthermore, the anointing of the Rebbe Rashab,
whose leadership would only begin after the leadership of his father,
the Rebbe Maharash,
which had not yet begun
(because the Tzemach Tzedek was still the Nasi)?!
According to the above,
that anointing can be in a manner that it takes effect after a time,
it is understood*.
May it be His will that through the study of the laws of kings and leaders,
and the laws of the anointing oil,
at a time when there is no physical anointing –
there should be the fulfillment of "and we will render [the words of] our lips as bulls"134.
And according to the statement of our Rabbis, of blessed memory, "Whoever engages in the study of the Torah [of the offerings] is as if he offered [an offering]",
and moreover, as it is stated regarding the study of the laws of the Holy Temple,
then through the study of its exits and entrances, "the building of My House" is not "nullified" –
so too regarding the study of the laws of kings and princes and the laws of the anointing oil.
One must, however, have,
as the Rebbe Maharash said,
the King Messiah in actual reality, literally, below, in the realm of handbreadths,
as a king of flesh and blood
(as the Rambam rules),
who will take out the Jews from exile literally –
let this be in actual reality,
in the true and complete redemption,
speedily in our days, literally.
*) And one cannot force from this story that the leadership of His Holiness, our Master, our Teacher, the Rebbe
(the Maharash)
of blessed memory, began immediately after the passing of his father, His Holiness, our Master, our Teacher, the Rebbe Maharash
(even before the recitation of the discourse beginning with "Keter Yitnu" on the festival of Sukkot)
(see the talk of Shabbat Parshat Vayeira,

from the fact that immediately after "And the sun rose
(it was)
and the sun set" –
for regarding a minor son of a king, the law is that they wait until he grows up. And it is also understood from the simple meaning of the statement of our Rabbis, of blessed memory,
(Yoma 38b)
on the verse "And the sun rose and the sun set" –
"A righteous person does not depart from the world until a righteous person
(i.e., is born)
like him is created",
that the intention in this is not that immediately from "is created"
(is born)
his leadership began,
but rather when he grows up.

As usual, on learning a verse in the weekly Torah portion with Rashi's commentary,
and a topic in the notes of [my] father on the Zohar on the weekly Torah portion –
There is a perplexing matter in the current Torah portion that Rashi seemingly should have addressed:
In the portion of Eliezer, it is told how Eliezer asked the family of Rivkah, "Send me away to my master." "Her brother and her mother" said, "Let the maiden stay with us for days or ten",
as Rashi explains that this is the time that Rivkah needs "to provide for herself with jewelry." But when Eliezer asked, "Do not delay me," they sent Rivkah immediately with Eliezer.
Rashi comments on what is written "her brother and her mother" and asks, "And Bethuel, where was he?" And he answers,
that during that night, "an angel came and killed him."
Immediately the question arises:
How is it that "her brother and her mother" did not ask that Rivkah wait the seven days of mourning,
after the death of Bethuel?
Seemingly, one could answer,
that from the Torah, mourning is not even one day
(the seven days of mourning are only Rabbinic),
and since part of the day is like the whole,
it turns out,
that by the time they sent Rivkah away
(on that day)
the mourning from the Torah had already passed. And regarding the Rabbinic mourning –
who knows if one can ask about this in the simple meaning of the verse!
According to Rashi, however, this is not an answer. Because Rashi already explained earlier in Parshat Noach,
on the verse "For in yet seven days, I will cause it to rain upon the earth, etc." –
"These are the seven days of mourning for Methuselah."
Now, if the matter of the seven days of mourning was able to delay the flood,
which came after there was a situation of "and the earth was corrupt",
and the 120 years had already passed completely
[as Rashi says explicitly,
that what the verse says "for yet seven days" is because "this time was added to the 120 years"],
nevertheless,
the matter of the seven days of mourning is so important that it delayed the flood,
then all the more so in our case,
that they should have waited with sending Rivkah away until after the seven days of mourning for Bethuel.
And even though Methuselah was a righteous person
(as Rashi infers, "Methuselah the righteous",
and therefore "the Holy One, blessed be He, had mercy on his honor and delayed the punishments") –
but here we are speaking, after all, about the claim of her brother and her mother,
who sought an argument with which they could detain Rivkah with them. They should have argued that she must remain for the seven days of mourning for Bethuel. And especially since Bethuel was also the leader of Aram,
as is implied from the verses
(and as it is stated explicitly in several Midrashim of our Rabbis, of blessed memory).
With several more precise points. And as will be explained further.
In the notes of [my] father on the Zohar –
in the last note on our Torah portion –
he comments on what is stated in the Zohar that "at the time that the Holy One, blessed be He, will be ready to redeem the Congregation of Israel..
He will prepare a palace
(the Holy Temple)
and build the city of Jerusalem..
and afterwards He will gather the dispersed of Israel."
In this note, the father explains several precise points in the language of the Zohar,
but he does not stop at the order of the matters as they stand in the Zohar –
that first will be "and He will prepare the chamber" and only then "the outcasts of Israel He will gather."
What we see here,
is that the Zohar holds like the opinion of the Rambam:
in the verse "He Who builds Jerusalem, the L-rd, the outcasts of Israel He will gather" there are two interpretations in the Midrashim of Chazal: (a) –
a) that "He Who builds Jerusalem" comes before "the outcasts of Israel He will gather" b) "He Who builds Jerusalem, the L-rd" –
after "the outcasts of Israel He will gather"
(and as one finds regarding this in other verses).
The Rambam rules, however, "and he will build the Temple in its place and gather the outcasts of Israel",
that first comes the building of the Holy Temple and only then comes the ingathering of the exiles. And this is as it is stated here in the Zohar "and He will prepare the chamber..
and afterwards the outcasts of Israel He will gather."
As discussed several times,
this very ruling of the Rambam also completely negates the opinion of those who go around and say about the current situation,
that this is the beginning of the redemption, heaven forbid.
And not the "beginning of the redemption" in any manner like the Midrash says,
that immediately at the destruction of the Holy Temple the cow gave birth and the Arab who understood the birth of the cow said that this means the redeemer of Israel is born,
and only then did the length of the exile begin –
rather they go around and say that now is the beginning of the redemption from the true and complete redemption –
This is contrary to the explicit ruling in the Rambam,
which states clearly what will be the order of the redemption,
and that is:
first "a king from the house of David will arise, learned in Torah and occupied with mitzvot like David his father..
and he will compel all of Israel to walk in it and to strengthen its breach",
and afterwards "he will wage the wars of the L-rd",
and afterwards "he will build the Temple in its place
(and afterwards)
and gather the outcasts of Israel". And as discussed multiple times,
that none of the commentators of the Rambam –
neither the Kesef Mishneh
(Lehavdil),
Raavad,
Radbaz etc. –
disagree with this,
from which this is a proof
(as it is stated in the books of the rules of the Rambam)
that they agree with him.
And therefore,
those who say that now is already the beginning of the redemption,
it is not only that this is contrary to the ruling of the Rambam and it is forbidden to say so,
but this itself pushes off the redemption, heaven forbid!
And one does not need to come to any interpretations and explanations to know that we are not yet at the beginning of the redemption,
because one sees tangibly that there has never been such a terrible situation for Jews as now –
both from the aspect of "Esau hates Jacob",
and from the aspect of the decline of Jews before gentileness.
And to such an extent,
that after it was decided,
as the military men all said,
to finish with haste the war in Lebanon,
which specifically then would have been with the greatest success,
with only a few casualties,
or perhaps even without casualties –
they afterwards postponed and delayed it,
and they forfeited the casualties, heaven forbid,
with the calculation of what will the nations say!
The military men came with a ready plan how to finish it with haste,
and they said thereby that specifically in this manner it will be with a minimum of casualties –
nevertheless they sat to make assemblies and create committees and deliberation etc.,
with the claim do not provoke the nations! knowing at the time of the act that this will cost more casualties and wounded, heaven forbid!
Until they also influenced religious Jews,
by giving them shekels and other matters,
that they should say that this is "Daas Torah" that one does not need to finish the matter immediately,
rather one should prolong it,
because of what will the nations say!
What, after they started this in Lebanon, there is no place at all for the question of what is Daas Torah,
certainly one must finish it with haste,
as all the military
men said;
צבא האבן געזאגט;
before this there was perhaps a place for the question of whether they should have started it. And in truth, then also there was no question,
because the military men said then that one must do it for the security of Jews in the Land of Israel. But after they have already started the matter, it is a clear thing that according to the Torah one must finish it with haste,
in order to prevent casualties and wounded.
After the operation was started,
it is a certain thing that one must finish it with alacrity. As it is with a literal operation,
that after it was started,
one must finish it as quickly as possible so that no extra Jewish blood will be spilled
(as one sees in practice that during an operation blood is spilled).
And as mentioned,
so said all the military personnel,
that by not finishing the matter immediately,
more casualties will fall. And even those who said that it should be prolonged,
also said that through this more casualties will fall,
but one must forgo this because of what will the nations say.
And also in Washington they said that it should be finished as quickly as possible,
because then there will not be such pressure on Washington,
and consequently they will not need to pressure the Land of Israel so much.
Nevertheless,
it was prolonged,
and through this caused casualties and wounded, may the Merciful One protect us!
And in addition they also influenced religious Jews,
by giving honor and other matters,
that they should say that this is "Daas Torah"!
Heaven forbid to say that this is Daas Torah,
Torah says exactly the opposite,
that one must finish such a matter because of danger to life.
As the law is that when gentiles are besieging,
even outside the Land,
as it is in Lebanon,
one must abandon everything,
and take weapons,
even on Shabbos,
to defend oneself!
And here the outcry is even greater:
The same people who now influenced that the war in Lebanon be prolonged because of what will the nations say,
and through this caused that there be extra casualties, may the Merciful One protect us –
already made the same mistake earlier:
During the Yom Kippur War they did not allow the military personnel to be mobilized in its time,
because of what will the nations say,
and through this caused that hundreds of extra casualties fall and Jewish blood be spilled!
And so was also the mistake previously during the Six Day War. And so also in the year 48 during the time that one fled from the Suez Canal because of what will the nations say.
Three times they already made the same mistake,
and they know about it and saw it themselves –
nevertheless they influenced that the same mistake be made again in the war in Lebanon,
and through this caused that more Jewish casualties fall!
And furthermore –
when these people walk in the street in the Land of Israel they encounter the widows and orphans of those who fell,
for whom these people are naturally responsible –
because they caused this through their mistake of yielding to the gentiles because of what will the nations say;
ווייל זיי האבן דערצו גורם געווען דורך זייער טעות אז מ'זאל נאכגעבן די גוים צוליב מה יאמרו הגוים;
Widows who, if they had not made the mistake, the women would have continued to have children with their husbands
(who fell),
and would have fulfilled the "be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it" –
And nevertheless,
they are not affected by this and are now continuing with the same method of yielding because of what will the nations say,
knowing that through this one causes more casualties and wounded!
And the main point is that with them it does not touch nor affect!
And not simply so,
that one only needs to achieve that they repent,
which is their very private matter,
as much as it is possible to say private regarding Jews,
for all of Israel are responsible for one another –
rather it does not touch nor affect until they continue to influence others regarding action!
As it appears, the only thing that will affect them is,
that a spirit from on high be poured upon them.
And in any case - in such a situation and state,
where it is "Esav hates Yaakov" and Jews have fallen so low before gentileness,
one cannot say that this is the beginning of the redemption!
And on the contrary –
when one says so, one finds oneself in an even deeper exile,
because they call darkness light,
and one does not even recognize that it is a double and multiplied darkness of exile!
And when this is in the Land of Israel the exile is even deeper,
because there is the palace of the King!
Since it is Shabbat, one should not prolong a matter that causes distress,
and especially regarding other Jews,
who are certainly not guilty of this.
And to conclude with a good matter –
with the questions on the Zohar of our portion:
A) The explanation of the order of the matters as they stand in the Zohar –
that first there will be "and He will prepare a chamber" and only afterward "the dispersed of Israel He will gather"
(as per the ruling of the Rambam).
B) What is the lesson from this in the service of G-d.
For since the order is in a matter of halachah
(as per the ruling of the Rambam),
the soul of the halachah is –
the inner dimension of the Torah,
and just as every matter in the soul of the Torah
of the Torah must descend into halachah
(the bodies of the Torah),
so too must every matter in halachah emerge in the soul of the Torah. As explained in the Zohar in Behaalotecha that the inner dimension of the Torah is the soul of the bodies of the Torah and the bodies of the Torah are the body of the soul of the Torah,
they are one thing.
And as will be explained below.
To illustrate what was previously begun to be discussed regarding the opinion of the Rambam,
who rules that he was anointed with the anointing oil
(and not with balsam oil) –
at first glance:
it is indeed so that there was no prohibition involved
(as discussed earlier,
that the prohibition is only "for future generations",
and the later generations after the kings of the House of David),
but what is the source for this,
that his anointing was with the anointing oil?
The explanation of this is:
The difference between the opinion of the Radak and the Rambam is,
that the Radak is a commentator on the plain meaning,
therefore there is no necessity that everything he writes in his commentary aligns with halachah –
similar to what has been discussed several times regarding the commentary of Rashi on the Torah,
that since he explains the plain meaning of the verse,
there is no necessity that this should align with halachah;
איז ניט קיין הכרח אז דאס זאל מתאים זיין מיט הלכה;
not so the Rambam, who is a halachic decisor
[also the Radak –
Rabbi David Kimchi –
did not conduct himself as he writes in his commentary,
but rather as it is ruled in halachah;
נאר ווי עס ווערט אפגע'פסק'נט אין הלכה;
also his "halachic decisor" is the Rambam].
And therefore,
even though from the plain meaning of the verses it appears that the anointing of Saul was not with the anointing oil
(but with balsam oil) –
nevertheless the Rambam
(in halachah)
has a necessity from the Gemara,
that it was indeed with the anointing oil:
The Gemara in Megillah expounds on the verse*
(that is stated in the portion of Chanah)
"My horn is exalted in the L-rd" –
"My horn is exalted, but not my flask, – David
David and Solomon who were anointed with a horn, their kingdom endured; Saul and Jehu who were anointed with a flask, their kingdom did not endure."
The question arises:
If one were to say that Saul was anointed only with balsam oil
(not with the anointing oil) –
from where is the proof that what "his kingdom did not endure" is because he "was anointed with a flask";
איז פון וואנעט די ראי' אז דאס וואס "לא נמשכה מלכותו" איז צוליב דעם וואס "נמשך בפך";
perhaps it is because he was not anointed with the anointing oil?
And on the contrary:
at first glance,
the matter of the anointing oil is more of a reason for bestowing eternality upon the monarchy
("their kingdom endured")
than the matter of being anointed with a flask. For the anointing oil is indeed an eternal matter,
which exists forever,
and as the Rambam brings this down!
From that which the Gemara says that the reason for "his kingdom did not endure" is because he was anointed with a flask, the Rambam derives,
that the only difference between the anointing of David and the anointing of Saul is only in that he was anointed with a flask and David was anointed with a horn;
אז דער איינציקער חילוק צווישן משיחת דוד און משיחת שאול איז נאר אין דעם וואס נמשח בפך ודוד נמשח בקרן;
but in both cases the anointing was with the anointing oil.
It remains, however, not understood,
as above,
regarding Joshua. At first glance,
since we find by Saul
(even though he is not from the kings of the House of David)
that he was anointed with the anointing oil –
it should seemingly have been so also by Joshua.
However,
as discussed earlier:
from the plain meaning of the verses it does not appear that he was anointed by Moses with the anointing oil.
And may it be His will that very soon the time should come when it will be,
as the Rambam concludes the laws of Kings and their Wars,
"there will be there neither famine nor war nor envy nor competition, for the good will be abundantly bestowed, etc.,
and the entire occupation of the world will be solely to know G-d, etc.",
and "they will all know Me"*
And "those who taste life are worthy",
already now one tastes from every single dish that will be in the future to come
until one comes to eat the dish itself in the future redemption,
the feast of the Leviathan and the Wild Ox,
and even before this the true and complete redemption will come through our righteous Mashiach,
very soon.
Here is the place to speak about a matter relating to actual practice:
Continuing from what was discussed above, then on Shabbat Mevarchim the month of Kislev, one must begin making the preparations for the month of Kislev and for Chanukah,
which comes at the end of the month. And especially that "their beginning is embedded in their end and their end in their beginning" –
one should now begin making the preparations to carry out the Chanukah campaign with the greatest storm. And in a manner of rest of the body and rest of the soul,
and in a manner of from the outset going over
(as an instruction from the Rebbe Maharash).
Until one comes to the "voice of the herald heralds and says" "the voice of Tzemach, a man Tzemach is his name, he is David himself",
the tidings of the true and complete redemption.
Which is accomplished through our deeds and our service in general. And in connection with our portion –
our deeds and our service in the three matters of the candles of Shabbat Kodesh and Yom Tov,
kashrut of eating and drinking and family purity,
the three matters which were by Sarah,
"a lamp lit from Shabbat eve to Shabbat eve and a blessing found in the dough and a cloud bound over the tent".
And since this is also connected with Yitzchak
(as in the portion that follows,
"And these are the generations of Yitzchak"),
who was an only son,
"and I will multiply his seed and I will give him Yitzchak",
which Yitzchak is also connected with the future redemption,
as we will then say to Yitzchak – for
for You are our Father,
as explained in the discourses of Purim –
this is also connected with love of Israel and unity of Israel. And especially –
through the fact that every Jew receives a letter in one of the general Torah scrolls.
And also the matter of education,
which is especially connected with Chanukah,
which is named after the matter of education,
and as the connection between them is explained in the discourses of Chanukah
And from this it then descends into the details:
building a Torah,
tefillin,
mezuzah,
charity,
a house full of books –
and the wise ones,
and the three aforementioned campaigns,
which are discussed in our portion –
candles of Shabbat Kodesh and Yom Tov,
kashrut of eating and drinking and family purity.
And whoever is diligent in all these matters is praiseworthy and whoever increases is praiseworthy.
And doing all this out of great joy,
which joy breaks through boundaries,
and "these are the generations of Peretz",
until "the breaker will go up before them",
in the true and complete redemption,
speedily in our days, literally.
The Rebbe Shlita began to sing and "Ufaratzta".
The explanation in Rashi,
in brief, at least:
The reason why the brother and mother
(of Rivkah)
did not ask Eliezer that they should wait the seven days of mourning after Besuel,
is simply –
because they asked
(from the outset)
for more:
"days or ten". And with this they indeed thought,
that if they would not achieve "days or ten",
they would ask for the seven days of mourning;
וועלן זיי בעטן אויף די ז' ימי אבילות;
But when Eliezer answered
(to their request of "stay a few days or ten")
"do not delay me – and Hashem
and Hashem has made my journey successful, etc.",
this negated entirely any "delay"
(even for a short while,
like seven days).
The explanation in this:
By saying "and Hashem has made my journey successful" Eliezer meant the supernatural success and speed in his journey,
as Rashi explains on the verse "and I came today" –
"today I left and today I came,
from here that the ground jumped for him".
That is to say,
that the entire journey from the land of Israel to Aram took Eliezer less than one day. For Eliezer did not leave immediately at the beginning of the day –
first there was the conversation between Avraham and Eliezer,
There is no place to say that the conversation of Avraham to Eliezer was the night before,
and Eliezer,
"the steward of his house",
instead of going immediately on his mission of Avraham
(in the manner of the conduct of Avraham –
"and Avraham arose early in the morning"),
would go to sleep and wait until the next day –
which certainly took a span of time:
in addition to all the details of the mission
("you shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanite, etc., but to my land, etc., you shall go, etc.,
perhaps the woman will not be willing to follow me, etc.") –
Avraham made Eliezer swear,
which, if a simple person prepares himself for an oath, all the more so that Eliezer prepared himself before he made the oath;
וואס מה-דאך אז אן איש פשוט איז זיך מכין צו א שבועה עאכו"כ אז אליעזר האט זיך מכין געווען איידער ער האט געמאכט די שבועה;
In addition, Abraham had to write a deed of gift on all his possessions as Rashi brings,
that "he wrote a deed of gift to Isaac for all that he had,"
and simply it is logical that Abraham wrote that deed on that day,
because if not, it will turn out that it is an antedated deed. It is true that an antedated deed is valid,
but entirely a "smooth" thing it is not.
Afterwards, Eliezer had to take the ten camels etc. etc.
And after all this,
Eliezer arrived still on that same day and still "toward the time of the going out of the drawers of water,"
and even more:
He was at the well of water even before the drawers of water came there –
he said his entire prayer even before the drawers of water came. Nevertheless, "and it came to pass, before he had finished speaking, that behold, Rebecca came out etc.,"
but he had already begun his prayer from earlier.
From all this one sees the "Hashem caused my way to succeed" in a manner that one cannot delay the match at all,
even for one day.
Consequently, a place to request a delay for the days of mourning was already negated.
And based on this, further precise points in the matter are also answered.
In the farbrengen preceding this, several questions regarding the overturning of Sodom and Gomorrah and the other two cities were not answered:
It was asked then:
The angels went only to Sodom,
so why afterwards was there "and Hashem rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire" and afterwards it says "and He overturned these cities,"
and Rashi explains "the four of them were sitting on one rock and He overturned them from above to below,"
i.e., that He overturned all four cities. Why did He "rain brimstone and fire" only "upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah,"
but the other two cities were only overturned?
The proof of Rashi that "and He overturned these cities" refers to "the four of them"
(and not only to Sodom and Gomorrah)
is from later in Parshat Nitzavim,
where it says "like the overturning of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim";
וואס עס שטייט 182 "כמהפכת סדום ועמורה אדמה וצבוים";
but one must understand the reason for the difference,
why He rained brimstone and fire upon Sodom and Gomorrah,
and regarding Admah and Zeboiim there was only overturning.
Others took a stand on this and wrote wild things in an attempt to answer it with a forced interpretation among forced interpretations:
One attempts to answer it with a whole calculation:
In Parshat Lech Lecha, after the story about the four kings who defeated the five, it says "and the king of Sodom and Gomorrah fled and they fell there, and the survivors fled to the mountain,"
and Rashi explains "that each one fled to wherever he found first." And it is logical that the people of the city of "the survivors,"
Admah,
Zeboiim and Zoar,
also fled at the time their kings fled. And since to Sodom and Gomorrah the inhabitants afterwards returned and continued there in their evil deeds,
therefore "and Hashem rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire,"
but regarding the other two cities
(Admah and Zeboiim)
they did not return,
they remained empty and therefore there was only overturning there.
But this entire explanation is not at all sustainable:
One cannot say that the "survivors" who "fled to the mountain" remained on the mountain. And even if they were there, they certainly afterwards returned to their cities.
And especially since in the meantime
(between the time when "they fled to the mountain" and the overturning of the cities)
approximately 29 years passed:
According to the method of Rashi on the Torah
(in the plain meaning of Scripture)
the Covenant Between the Parts was immediately after the war of the kings
(when "the survivors fled to the mountain"),
as explained in Rashi
("After these things –
every place where it says 'after' it is adjacent,
'after these things' is separated,
after these things after a miracle was performed for him that he killed the kings and he was worried and said I have received reward for all my righteousness,
therefore He said to him the place..
your reward is very great") – not
like the method that the Covenant Between the Parts was before the war of the kings,
and Abraham was seventy years old at the time of the Covenant Between the Parts,
As is known, that this is according to the opinion
(Baalei HaTosafot, Rashi at the beginning of Lech Lecha)
that Abraham left Charan two times,
and the first time that he left Charan, Lot went with him, etc., and he was captured, etc., and afterwards there was the Covenant Between the Parts,
in "this land,"
in the Land of Israel,
as is explicit in the verse,
and at that time
(at the Covenant Between the Parts)
Abraham was seventy years old;
איז אברהם געווען בן ע' שנה;
and "Go for yourself from your land, etc." was the second time that Abraham left Charan,
at which time he was seventy-five years old,
And afterwards, until the birth of Isaac, another thirty years passed,
as Rashi explains
("Thirty years were from the time the decree of the Covenant Between the Parts was decreed until Isaac was born").
And the overturning of the cities was one year before the birth of Isaac
(at the time of the promise that "at this time next year" and "behold, a son to Sarah your wife") –
it turns out that between the time when "the survivors fled"
(after the war of the kings)
and the overturning of the cities was approximately 29 years,
Now, how can one say that for a duration of 29 years the cities,
with the fields and vineyards that were there,
remained empty,
and especially since the cities were "like the garden of Hashem, like the land of Egypt"!
Others wanted to answer that the angels went only to Sodom –
in order to save Lot
(who was in Sodom).
This is a "reason" –
but Rashi takes a different approach!
Rashi writes: "And the two angels came to Sodom to destroy,
one to destroy Sodom and one to save Lot"
(because "one angel does not perform two missions").
So – indeed
Regarding the angel who went to save Lot, one can say that for this reason he went specifically to Sodom – but why did the second angel
(to destroy Sodom)
go specifically to Sodom and not to Gomorrah,
and nevertheless "And Hashem rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire."
Another answer they wanted to give on this
(that the angel went specifically to Sodom) –
"Because Sodom was the metropolis and the most important of them all, the verse attributes [the matter] to it,"
as Rashi writes on the verse "If I find in Sodom, etc., for the sake of the entire place."
One cannot, however, say this,
because Rashi explains thus regarding the statement of Hashem to Abraham "If I find in Sodom fifty righteous people within the city, I will forgive the entire place for their sake" –
that since Sodom was the "metropolis,"
and "metropolis" is a Greek word that consists of two words –
"meter,"
which means mother
(as it is also in English),
and "polis,"
which means city,
i.e., the mother-city,
the capital city –
therefore the Almighty said "If I find in Sodom,"
And afterwards Rashi adds that Sodom was also
(in addition to "metropolis")
"and the most important of them all,"
because with this he addresses a question:
Even if one says that Sodom is the "metropolis"
(and therefore the Almighty said specifically Sodom) –
why, however, if no righteous people are found in Sodom, should one not go to search, perhaps there are righteous people in Gomorrah, etc.?
Where is the fairness? Rashi addresses this by adding that Sodom was also "the most important of them all":
Since Sodom was "the most important of them all,"
if no righteous people are found in Sodom,
the city most important of them all,
surely there are no righteous people in the other cities either,
which are not as important;
וועלעכע זיינען ניט אזוי חשוב;
But this is only regarding finding righteous people in the cities in order to save them –
one cannot, however, say that because Sodom is "metropolis and important
of them all,"
therefore the angel went only to Sodom,
and afterwards "And Hashem rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire." Because if Gomorrah also needed to be destroyed,
the angel should have gone there as well,
just as he went to Sodom.
The explanation, nevertheless, is understood from what Rashi addressed previously:
On the verse "For the earth is filled with violence"
(therefore the Almighty brought the flood)
Rashi explains:
"Their decree was sealed only because of the robbery"
(and not because of their evil deeds between man and God).
Based on this, one will also understand why "Hashem rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire" unlike the other two cities He only overturned –
Because the difference between the wickedness of Sodom and Gomorrah and the wickedness of Admah and Zeboiim consisted in this,
that in Sodom and Gomorrah they were evil also between man and his fellow,
such as robbery and the like,
unlike in Admah and Zeboiim their wickedness was only between man and the Omnipresent –
as Rashi explained earlier:
In chapter Lech Lecha in the account of the war of the kings,
the verse states the names of the kings:
"They made war with Bera king of Sodom and with Birsha king of Gomorrah,
Shinab king of Admah and Shemeber king of Zeboiim etc.",
Rashi explains the meaning of the names of the kings
(which is an unusual thing in Rashi on the Torah):
"Bera –
evil to heaven and evil to creatures. Birsha –
that he became elevated in his wickedness
("b" resha").
Shinab –
one who hates his Father in heaven. Shemeber –
he set a wing to fly and to leap and to rebel against the Holy One, blessed be He."
From this one sees simply,
that the difference between Sodom and Gomorrah
(whose kings were "Bera" and "Birsha")
and Admah and Zeboiim
(whose kings were "Shinab" and "Shemeber"),
is –
איז –
that in Sodom and Gomorrah the wickedness was also between man and his fellow,
"evil to heaven evil to creatures",
"that he became elevated in his wickedness",
"b' resha"
(twice wicked,
between the Omnipresent –
the Omnipresent and between creatures)*,
unlike in Admah and Zeboiim their wickedness was only between man and the Omnipresent,
"one who hates his Father in heaven",
"to leap and to rebel against the Holy One, blessed be He."
Based on this, a five-year-old understands simply why "Hashem rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire" unlike Admah and Zeboiim He only overturned –
Because due to wickedness also between man and his fellow a more severe punishment comes,
as Rashi explains regarding the generation of the flood,
that "their decree was not sealed except on account of robbery"
(even though among them there was also wickedness between man and the Omnipresent).
And that the angels went specifically to Sodom –
is because Sodom was "the metropolis and important above all of them".
And in addition to this:
Before the angels went on their mission to overturn Sodom,
they first had to clarify whether the people of Sodom were not engaging in repentance,
in accordance with Rashi earlier on the verse "I will go down now and see",
that this means "they stand in their rebellion". And as one indeed finds,
that the angels asked Lot about the people of the city –
"what is their nature and their deeds".
And therefore the angels went specifically to Sodom,
because specifically there there was a possibility to speak with the leader of the city,
and through him to effect upon all the people of the city that they should correct their way**.
As the matter is simply,
that when one wishes to effect upon the people of the city,
one goes to speak with the leader of the city,
as Rashi already explained earlier, that –
only –

*) So is emphasized evil to creatures in Sodom and Gomorrah in what is said
(Vayera 18, 20)
"the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah because it is great etc.",
and in Rashi
(on the verse afterwards):
"the cry of a certain maiden whom they killed with an unusual death because she gave food to a poor person". But 1) this is a second explanation in Rashi.
2) this is an explanation that "our Rabbis expounded",
and not the literal meaning actually
(the killing of a certain maiden by the inhabitants of five cities?!).
**) And that we do not find in the simple meaning of the verses
(or in Rashi)
that they actually spoke with the king of Sodom –
is understood simply from Rashi (19, 4)
beginning "all the people from every quarter".
(Only)
with the king of Sodom a miracle occurred and he was saved,
and he returned to Sodom to lead his kingdom "and a miracle was performed for the king of Sodom that he went out from there because among the nations there were some who did not believe that Abraham was saved from the fiery furnace of the Chaldeans,
and since this one came out from the clay they believed in Abraham retroactively";
וכיון שיצא זה מן החמר האמינו באברהם למפרע" 203;
unlike the kings of the other cities we do not find that they were saved,
because in order that the nations should believe that Abraham was saved from Ur of the Chaldeans it was sufficient that one miracle that one should return and tell about it,
one does not need to make another miracle that also others should be saved!
The explanation in the Zohar:
There are two matters –
the virtue of Israel and the virtue of the Temple. And the practical difference between the two aspects in the order of the redemption
[which comes first:
"Builder of Jerusalem is Hashem" or "the outcasts of Israel He will gather" is] –
whose virtue should be with greater perfection:
When the ingathering of the exiles comes first and then the building of the Holy Temple –
then it turns out
a greater perfection in the Holy Temple,
that it is built with the power of all Jews.
This is like the elevation in the Land of Israel when all its inhabitants are upon it,
But if the building of the Holy Temple comes first and then the ingathering of the exiles,
it means
that the ingathering of the exiles is accomplished with the "light" and brightness of the third Holy Temple,
from "the Sanctuary, O Lord, which Your hands have established,"
it is understood
that through this the ingathering of the exiles of the Jews will be with more perfection.
And the halachic ruling in the Rambam is
that the building of the Holy Temple precedes the ingathering of the exiles –
because the main thing is the importance of the Jews. Therefore it is worthwhile that there should be a lack in the perfection of the Temple,
as long as among the Jews there should be more perfection.
From this one also sees the greatness of a Jew –
and consequently,
the magnitude of the matter of love of Israel,
as one speaks and one shouts and one cries out lately especially,
and unfortunately it does not accomplish,
but one remains sleeping!
Until one sleeps at the farbrengen itself,
and one has complaints that one shouts and disturbs from sleep and from the delight of Shabbat,
and especially since the sleep is in a "place where prayer is cultivated" and "a place where Torah is cultivated" –
this is a very great sleep! Yet one comes and one shouts and one wakes him up,
and at the moment he catches himself –
what is the first thing that he hears –
that one shouts specifically about love of Israel and the unity of Israel!...
And may it be His will that finally the speech and shouting about this should accomplish upon each and every one in actual deed,
until the most essential deed by the Holy One, blessed be He –
the true and complete redemption through our righteous Mashiach.
He began to sing "We Want Mashiach Now."
He gave a bottle of whiskey to R. Z.V. shiyita and to the venerable R. M.M. shiyita.
Afterward he said:
Those who need to make an after-blessing,
will certainly make an after-blessing.
After the afternoon prayer he began to sing "He Will Build the Holy Temple," etc.
