English translation 1
It is the 20th of Marcheshvan,
It is the 20th of Marcheshvan,
the birthday of the Rebbe1
(the Maharash) N"E,
the father of His Holiness, our master and teacher, the Rebbe.
And in this year, a special matter occurs in this regard –
it is one hundred years since the beginning of the leadership of the Rebbe N"E:
In the year 5643, there was the "and the sun set"1 of the Rebbe Maharash,
and then immediately there was the "and the sun rose"1 of his son and successor,
the Rebbe N"E.
In addition to this, this year also occurs fixedly,
that the 20th of Marcheshvan falls on Shabbat –
for the virtue of the Rebbe N"E is analogous to the virtue of Shabbat relative to the weekdays.
It is not an inevitable thing that the 20th of Marcheshvan should fall on Shabbat,
it can also fall on other days of the week. And the fixed occurrence of the 20th of Cheshvan depends on the fixed occurrence of Rosh Hashanah
(as was discussed once in passing):
The 20th of Cheshvan always falls on the same day of the week as
(the first day of)
Rosh Hashanah. Because the month of Tishrei is "always full," thirty days2,
therefore there is a fixed number of days between Rosh Hashanah and the 20th of Cheshvan,
and according to this fixed number of days between them, the 20th of Cheshvan always falls on the same day of the week as Rosh Hashanah.
However,
for example,
Chanukah,
which begins in the month of Kislev,
does not always fall on the same day of the week as Rosh Hashanah –
because the month of Cheshvan is sometimes full and sometimes lacking2,
consequently there are changes in the fixed occurrence on the days of the week of Chanukah relative to Rosh Hashanah.
And therefore,
just as Rosh Hashanah, in the fixed occurrence of this year,
fell on Shabbat,
so too the 20th of Cheshvan, in the fixed occurrence of this year,
falls on Shabbat.
And although the significance of the 20th of Cheshvan is connected to the day of the month,
and seemingly there is no difference on which day of the week it falls –
however, the Gemara3 says that Shabbat "benefits" all matters of that day.
That is, Shabbat effects an elevation in all matters of that day.
And just as this is regarding the festival of Rosh Hashanah that falls on Shabbat4,
that Shabbat also elevates the matters of Rosh Hashanah5,
so too regarding the 20th of Cheshvan when it falls on Shabbat,
that Shabbat elevates all the details and matters of that day,
including also that this day is the birthday of the Rebbe N"E,
when his mazal prevails6.
And as mentioned,
this comes in addition to that this year is one hundred years from the beginning of the leadership of the Rebbe N"E.
The concept of one hundred
(years) is
(as was discussed earlier at length7)
in the language of the Zohar8:
"the inclusive principle of all,"
the ultimate perfection9.
Perfection is connected with the perfection of the number ten,
for ten is also perfection,
which is why all matters are arranged in tens,
as explained in Kabbalah10,
until this descends also into the world of investigation and discourse,
that there is a special virtue in the number ten,
and every matter even below is arranged in tens. And as explained at length in the beginning of Sefer HaPardes11.
And in Sefer HaPardes, he connects this
(the perfection of ten)
with the ten Sefirot,
and since there are ten Sefirot above,
it thus becomes drawn down also below,
that with ten utterances the world was created12,
and all matters below have the definition of ten. And he connects this13 also with the ten praises at the end of the Book of Tehillim14
(from "Ne'im Zemirot Yisrael"15),
that the intention of the ten Sefirot and the ten utterances with which the world was created,
is so that a Jew below should praise and extol the Most High with these ten praises, etc.
But it can be said that in addition to the simple explanation that the Pardes gives,
that the ten Sefirot are higher than all matters and from them are drawn down the ten utterances with which the world was created,
and afterwards the ten praises
(the service of man below) –
In truth, the ten utterances with which the world was created are even higher than the ten Sefirot –
because the ten Sefirot are in the World of Atzilut,
whereas the creation of the world through the ten utterances comes from the Essence and Being,
as explained in the well-known Iggeret HaKodesh beginning "Ihu VeChayohi etc."16 which the Alter Rebbe wrote "in the days before his passing in the village of Pyena"17,
that the bringing into existence of something from nothing comes specifically from the Essence and Being, which "is not caused by any cause that preceded it, Heaven forbid,
and therefore He alone has the power and ability to create something from nothing and absolute non-existence, without any other cause or reason preceding this something."
The Pardes speaks as the matter is in its simple sense,
according to which the ten Sefirot come first, and from them the ten utterances are drawn down;
וואס לפי"ז קומען פריער די עשר ספירות און פון זיי ווערן נשתלשל די עשרה מאמרות;
but from the perspective of creation –
the ten utterances through which the world was created are higher than the ten Sefirot.
And one could say further,
that the ten praises of the Jewish people are even higher than the ten Sefirot, so to speak, and the ten utterances, so to speak –
because the Jewish people are higher than all matters,
and for their sake the world and all matters were created.
And if you wish, this is an explicit statement of our Sages, of blessed memory18:
"Whom did He consult? The souls of the righteous,"
"and Your people are all righteous"19. When the Holy One, blessed be He, wanted to create the world, He consulted with the Jewish people,
because they preceded the world20,
and are before all matters,
and through this all matters are then drawn forth,
and everything is for the sake of Israel21. And only after "for the sake of Israel" does "for the sake of the Torah" also come21,
for the Torah is connected with the Ten Commandments.
It follows,
that the ten praises which the Jewish people recite,
are higher, so to speak, than the Ten Commandments,
than the ten Sefirot and than the ten utterances.
And this matter –
the superiority of the ten praises of Israel,
because "Whom did He consult? The souls of the righteous," that all Jewish people are higher than all matters –
is connected with the concept of a birthday.
For the superiority of "Whom did He consult? The souls of the righteous,"
the superiority of the souls of Israel,
which is revealed not as the soul is found above,
but specifically when it comes down below into a body,
only then is the superiority of the soul brought out. And the soul comes down into a particular body on the birthday.
And the explanation of this:
In a soul there are several levels. As we say every morning,
that "the soul You have placed within me is pure,
You created it,
You formed it,
You breathed it into me"22,
and these are the four levels in the soul23,
and then there is the level where the soul comes down below and becomes clothed in a body,
the level of "and You guard it within me,"
which guarding comes from a place that is higher than all those higher levels
(as the soul is above,
before its clothing in the body),
as explained in Chassidus24.
And although Chassidus explains25 that the level from which the guarding comes is the aspect of the mazal of the soul,
which is in the aspect of makif,
nevertheless it affects the body below,
because mazal is from the term "and flow from Lebanon"26,
that is, "it flows and drips into the body."
It follows that the most supreme superiority of the soul is revealed specifically when the soul comes down below into a body.
And this is similar to what is found in the Torah,
that specifically when the Torah is below, it is connected with that which is above division.
As this is regarding the plain meaning aspect of the Torah:
Although the plain meaning of the Torah pertains to the world of Asiyah,
not only is it not lower than the other levels in the Torah,
but on the contrary –
as is known the statement of my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe27,
that the simplicity below grasps the simplicity of the Essence. So too regarding the plain meaning aspect of the Torah –
although it corresponds to the world of Asiyah and the beginning of study is from the plain meaning of the verse,
and only afterwards does one ascend to higher modes in the study of Torah –
nevertheless it grasps the simplicity above.
Specifically the plain meaning,
their end,
is interwoven in their beginning,
because their beginning is interwoven in their end28,
the end of action is in the initial thought29,
and as is known the precise point in this30,
that in the thought itself, this is the beginning.
So too regarding the souls of Israel:
Specifically when the soul is found below in a body, it attains the highest level. And as is explained the concept of "the end of action is in the initial thought" in connection with the souls of Israel and "Whom did He consult? The souls of the righteous,"
that the Jewish people originate in the initial thought,
in the thought itself –
the beginning of thought.
And as our Sages, of blessed memory, said31 that "seven things preceded the world,"
and of all of them, "the thought of Israel preceded everything"32.
When the soul comes down into a particular body and it becomes "and You guard it within me" –
this is specifically on the birthday of the person,
when the child emerges into the air of the world in a particular body.
Also earlier,
at the time of conception,
the soul already descended into the body of the fetus,
and it is known that already then there is the heartbeat and the movement of the fetus –
but then it is in the mother's body,
and "the fetus is considered the thigh of its mother"<sup>33</sup>;
וואס "עובר ירך אמו" 33;
however, the matter of "and You preserve it within me" occurs only at the time when the child emerges into the world in an independent body,
which is the matter of birth.
And these two times,
pregnancy and birth,
are alluded to in our parshah34:
"And Hashem remembered Sarah as He had said, and Hashem did for Sarah as He had spoken,"
"remembered Sarah as He had said –
for pregnancy,
as He had spoken –
for birth,"
as Rashi explains.
From this is understood the most sublime elevation of the birthday of every Jew,
when his soul descends into an independent body in the world and the elevation of "and You preserve it within me" is revealed,
He takes counsel with the souls of the righteous,
"and Your people are all righteous,"
connected with the matter of the ten praises
(as above).
The reason for this is that specifically when the soul is in the body, the individual service of the person begins.
And furthermore –
through the very matter of birth, a general matter concerning the entirety of the Jewish people is accomplished –
as our Sages said35, "The son of David will not come until all the souls in the
(treasury called (as Rashi35 explains))
body are finished." And this refers to the actual birth of a person
(not regarding pregnancy).
It follows that through the birth of every Jew, the coming of the son of David is brought closer,
Mashiach our righteousness,
in the true and complete redemption.
And this is so regarding the birthday of every Jew.
And certainly when it concerns the birthday of a Nasi in Israel. After his birth he indeed grew in his deeds and afterwards became a Nasi in Israel –
but immediately at the time of his birth he stands at this level.
Similar to what is stated regarding the first shepherd of Israel,
the Faithful Shepherd,
Moshe Rabbeinu,
that "he was a shepherd"36,
that immediately when he was born he was a shepherd36.
From the aforementioned matter –
the greatness of the matter of birth in general,
and in particular the birth of the Rebbe, may his soul rest in Eden –
every Jew must derive a lesson in his service.
And even though he could seemingly argue,
"Who is like him and who is equal to him"
(to the Rebbe, may his soul rest in Eden)
so what relevance is there that he should derive a lesson in his service from the matter of the Rebbe, may his soul rest in Eden –
they say that indeed "who is like him and who is equal to him,"
but nevertheless the Baal Shem Tov says37 that from every thing that a Jew sees or hears he must derive a lesson in service,
regardless of what level he holds. For since he saw or heard it,
it is certainly a lesson for him in his service.
So the general lesson from this is –
the greatness of the matter of the birth of each and every Jew,
to the extent that the birth of a single and individual Jew can cause Mashiach to come in actual reality!
And this is,
as discussed many times,
the ruling of the Rambam38,
that a Jew, through one action,
one thought,
one speech,
one deed,
can bring salvation and deliverance to the entire world.
And since the redemption must come immediately,
one must immediately do that one deed.
And for this there is the lesson of the birthday of the Rebbe, may his soul rest in Eden,
regarding the matters in which the Rebbe, may his soul rest in Eden, engaged,
as follows.
And in addition to this comes the lesson that the twentieth of Cheshvan this year is on Shabbat.
And the twentieth of Cheshvan could have fallen on another day of the week,
just as Rosh Hashanah can fall on another day of the week
(not on Shabbat),
indeed "Rosh Hashanah does not fall on Sunday, Wednesday, or Friday"39,
but it can fall on the other three days of the week, not specifically on Shabbat;
אבער ער קען אויסקומען אין אנדערע דריי טעג בשבוע ניט דוקא ביום השבת;
But this year Rosh Hashanah fell on Shabbat,
and so too the twentieth of Cheshvan is on Shabbat. There must also be a lesson from this.
And the general lesson of Shabbat is –
that then "all your work is done"40.
And the meaning of this is not that one should then sleep,
and moreover cry out that "sleep on Shabbat is a delight"41 –
rather, there must then be the service of man,
but in a manner of "all your work is done,"
without toil and exertion. And in the soul's faculties this is service out of delight,
"and you shall call Shabbat a delight"42.
And in particular the service of prayer,
as the Rebbe N"E
(the Baal HaYom HaHuledes)
explains in several of his maamarim43,
that the main matter and service of Shabbos is the service of prayer,
to the extent that also the main matter of prayer is on Shabbos,
and all prayers even of weekdays ascend in the prayer of Shabbos44.
And this is what Shabbos opens up in the matters of Chaf Cheshvan, similar to how Shabbos opens up in Rosh HaShanah.
The birthday of the Rebbe N"E in this year is the one hundred twenty-second birthday.
Then one begins saying chapter one hundred twenty-three in Tehillim45,
as is known the reshimah of K"K M"V Admo"r46,
that his father
(the Rebbe N"E)
told him that also in Gan Eden they said a discourse on the chapter of Tehillim corresponding to the number of his years on that day. And it is also known that when he became fifty-nine years old the Rebbe N"E said a maamar47 on chapter Samech48.
In chapter one hundred twenty-three in Tehillim it speaks about a prayer and request of "Na'im Zemirot Yisrael" where he laments about the length of the exile. As it states in the superscription that is printed in Tehillim on this chapter,
"The poet laments over a long and great time that has already passed in exile",
and it is evident that the one who wrote it is a reliable authority.
And actually one sees simply that this is the content of the chapter,
as he says at the end of the chapter "For we have been abundantly filled with contempt,
our soul is greatly filled with the scorning of the complacent, with the contempt of the proud".
And in what manner is the prayer regarding the length of the exile –
as he says at the beginning of the chapter "A Song of Ascents: To You I have lifted up my eyes, O You who dwell in the heavens".
And this is connected with the study of the inner dimension of Torah,
the study of Chassidus:
According to the revealed aspect of Torah one argues that Torah must be specifically down on earth,
Torah is not in heaven49. And one must have his eyes downward50.
To the extent that there are those, G-d forbid,
who cry out that they are fine with exile,
they lack nothing,
they can study Torah also in exile and it is good for them, G-d forbid!
One tells them that this is contrary to the Torah and contrary to the ruling of the Rambam,
that Jews yearn to go out of exile!
In any case –
according to the revealed aspect he argues that a Jew is found specifically below,
and Torah is found specifically below,
and the essence of G-dliness is found specifically below.
And similarly as one says regarding the Beis HaMikdash,
that it is specifically below, not in heaven,
and on the contrary –
"The heavens and the heavens of heavens cannot contain You"51,
"and surely this house" with a note of rest
(as Chassidus interprets52).
So too after the Beis HaMikdash was destroyed one says "And I will dwell in their midst –
in the midst of each and every one"53 specifically down here.
However, Chassidus teaches a Jew that he must look upward,
even to heaven,
"I have lifted up my eyes, O You who dwell in the heavens",
and he must constantly yearn for the redemption.
Chassidus says: It is true,
one is indeed found below and one must have his eyes downward,
but this must come after that one lifts his eyes upward,
"I have lifted up my eyes, O You who dwell in the heavens".
That is, that as he is found below he must be connected with above.
And there is no contradiction and no wonder that he is found below and together with this is "I have lifted up my eyes, O You who dwell in the heavens" and this does not negate the below –
for by way of example this was already for all time at the time of the giving of the Torah:
Torah was indeed given below,
but in a manner that "He bent the upper heavens and the lower heavens and placed them upon the mountain etc."54.
That is, that below one had to reach that there should be heaven.
The matter –
the connection of above and below,
that in the world
(below)
one has his eyes downward and together with this "I have lifted up my eyes, O You who dwell in the heavens" –
is also connected with the future redemption:
It is known what the Rebbe Maharash said55 that one wants and one must have the redemption through Moshiach Tzidkeinu down here within ten handbreadths in actual reality,
and it is not sufficient the redemption as it is only from the aspect of Torah,
and also not as the world is from the aspect of Torah,
but specifically below in the world as the world is in its own right,
world from the term concealment and hiding56.
And similarly in the service of man:
It is not sufficient that one make here a Land of Israel
(as is known the saying of the Tzemach Tzedek which K"K M"V Admo"r brings57),
a spiritual Land of Israel,
rather one must go to the Land of Israel in its simple sense.
And together with this, it is said that the redemption will be down here in the world in a manner of "and behold, with the clouds of heaven"58. Seemingly:
Are there perhaps other clouds,
not in the heavens,
that one needs to specify that it will be "and behold, with the clouds of heaven"? Rather, this emphasizes that the redemption down below on earth will be in a manner of heaven,
"I have lifted my eyes to the One who sits in heaven",
"and behold, with the clouds of heaven".
Not in a manner of "riding on the donkey"59,
which donkey indicates the materiality of the body
(as the Baal Shem Tov interprets60)
and the materiality of the world –
rather, it will be specifically down below in the material earth,
but in a manner of "and behold, with the clouds of heaven".
That the concept of the connection of above and below,
heaven and earth,
is connected with the concept of the Rebbe, may his soul be in Eden.
And although who can make distinctions between the Nesi'im,
the luminaries,
between the first luminary and the second luminary and the third luminary until the seventh luminary –
nevertheless, it is known the letter of the Rebbe, may his soul be in Eden61, regarding learning commentaries in the book of Tanya,
the Written Torah of Chassidus62,
that if from this one comes to the service of Hashem and to the fear of Hashem,
one may do so.
And so in this matter:
In the study of Torah itself, the concept of the connection of above and below,
heaven and earth
(that together with his eyes below is "I have lifted my eyes to the One who sits in heaven") –
the connection together of the study of the revealed aspect of Torah and the inner aspect of Torah.
Which was the unique concept of the Rebbe, may his soul be in Eden:
The Rebbe, may his soul be in Eden, was the first founder of the Tomchei Temimim Yeshivah. That the innovation of the yeshivah was that there they studied the revealed aspect of Torah and the inner aspect of Torah
(Chassidus)
together. And therefore the students of the yeshivah are called "Temimim" –
because with them there is a "perfect Torah",
the revealed aspect of Torah and the inner aspect of Torah together.
Before this and also after this there are yeshivos where they study the revealed aspect of Torah,
and there too there is the "blessed be He in Torah first"63,
and yeshivos where they also study mussar,
until among Chassidim –
also matters of Chassidus;
אויך ענינים של חסידות;
but there the study of the revealed aspect of Torah and the study of the inner aspect of Torah are not equally and together;
אבער דארטן איז דער לימוד פון נגלה דתורה און דער לימוד פון פנימיות התורה ניט בשוה וביחד;
Not so in the Tomchei Temimim Yeshivah, the innovation was that in the same building,
on the same day,
every single day,
in the same order of studies,
one studies the revealed aspect of Torah and the inner aspect of Torah,
with the same fixed schedule and with the same force and storm64.
And the study of both of them
(the revealed and Chassidus)
permeates every single moment of the day:
Even when he studies the revealed, it is evident that this is studied by one who studies Chassidus. And when he studies Chassidus, it is "an ignoramus is not a chassid"65,
which means simply –
that he studies Chassidus after having studied the revealed and this is evident upon him,
and at every single moment<sup>66</sup>;
ובכל רגע ורגע 66;
with him it is revealed "perfect Torah"67.
The lesson from this:
Anyone who once studied in the Tomchei Temimim Yeshivah might think,
that this was "once",
but now it is not relevant.
It is said to him68,
if he entered even for a moment into the Tomchei Temimim Yeshivah,
this is a "single moment" of holiness,
and it is stated in Kabbalah69 and in Chassidus70 that anything holy is not uprooted
from its place,
it remains forever without change,
in the category of "fixed is not nullified"71.
And this applies in every situation and condition in which the one who was even for a moment in Tomchei Temimim finds himself,
the change is only in externality,
and in internality he is always exactly as if he were now in Tomchei Temimim. Until he has no choice in this matter.
Choice he has regarding going in this path or in another path;
בחירה האט ער אויף גיין בדרך זה אדער בדרך שני;
Regarding, however, that which he was in Tomchei Temimim and this remains with him forever –
he has no choice.
And although the first time entering to study in Tomchei Temimim was by his choice,
but after he has already entered there,
this remains with him forever,
not dependent on his choice.
He only has the choice whether this should be revealed to him or concealed,
until he finds himself, G‑d forbid, in the lowest place,
until it cannot be expressed in speech,
in a deep pit, a bottomless well72,
because since he comes from a high roof<sup>72</sup>, the descent is even deeper;
ווארום וויבאלד אז ער קומט פון אן איגרא רמה 72 איז די ירידה נאך א טיפערע;
the depth of the descent depends on which roof he comes from –
therefore, indeed, he has great compassion upon him,
but even then he remains a tamim.
What is derived from this is a lesson,
and a lesson for good,
because since it speaks about Torat Chesed,
one cannot say that one comes to cause pain to a Jew –
but on the contrary:
one tells him that since he was in Tomchei Temimim,
this remains with him always,
and there is never any loss;
און ס'איז קיינמאל ניטא קיין פארפאלן;
no matter what situation and state he finds himself in, the "one moment" that he was in Tomchei Temimim remains with him always,
and in one moment he can go out from the state in which he finds himself and stand in the situation and state in which he needs to stand.
And in a manner of lechatchilah ariber,
which is the subject of the Rebbe Maharash73,
for which this year is the hundredth year since his passing.
Until lechatchilah ariber not only in all spiritual matters,
but also in all physical matters,
that one has everything one needs to have physically in a manner of expansion.
Because one receives it through the power of the Rebbe n"e,
the founder of Yeshivas Tomchei Temimim,
and afterwards from the Rebbe, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, Nasi Doreinu,
his successor,
and the director of the yeshivah,
as his father, the Rebbe n"e, established him during his leadership,
at which time the power of the Ohr HaSovev is revealed,
as explained in the wedding discourses of the Rebbe n"e74.
One also mentions –
since one now begins to recite Chapter 123 of Tehillim,
as discussed above –
that being down on earth, one should "lift my eyes to the One who dwells in heaven."
And a Jew should pray that "our soul is greatly sated with the scorn of the complacent" of the exile,
and one wants to already go out of exile.
And not, G‑d forbid, to argue the opposite,
that the exile is good,
as long as one can sit and learn Torah! And in addition, he says that he is a wise man and an understanding man,
and declares that he knows the entire Torah. This itself is a darkness within darkness, lower than that. He deludes himself that he knows the entire Torah;
און איז מכריז אז ער איז יודע כל התורה כולה. וואס דאס גופא איז א חושך אין חושך למטה מזה. ער רעדט זיך איין אז ער איז יודע כל התורה כולה;
and together with this he cries out contrary to the Torah –
that the exile is good!
Woe and alas for his knowledge in Torah study while he cries out contrary to a ruling in the Rambam,
both in Hilchos Melachim75,
and in Hilchos Teshuvah76,
that "all Israel, their prophets and their sages, yearned for the days of Mashiach, etc."
Which speaks about true prophets and true sages,
who indeed knew the entire Torah,
and nevertheless this was little for them and they yearned for the days of Mashiach.
And certainly this must be so for simple people
(at least simple relative to the prophets and sages)!
And especially since this one –
who claims that it is good for him in exile –
further declares that he is humble,
and that he cannot rule on any questions,
he does not know any law,
and signs himself thus,
and even prints this,
with a reasoned argument;
מיט א מילתא בטעמא;
and nevertheless he has the audacity to rule contrary to the aforementioned Rambam!
Granted, regarding what is in the daily prayers, that every Jew asks that the redemption should already come –
he has no connection to the prayer that is in the siddur. He has a connection to Torah,
he only has a connection to the Rambam –
but he rules contrary to the Rambam,
at the same time that he cries out and signs that he does not know any law.
And on the contrary –
whom does the Rambam first mention that they yearned for the days of Mashiach,
they are the prophets and sages,
and afterwards he mentions regarding other Jews.
And may it be His will that it should be so in actual deed,
that every Jew should wait with all desire for the coming of Mashiach Tzidkeinu,
as all the true sages and prophets always waited, anticipated, and hoped for the redemption.
And not to become confused and influenced by those who argue the opposite. For there is nothing at all to become confused about from this. And especially since he himself cries out that he cannot rule on any question.
And in general –
Why must one inquire what the other says?!
We have nothing but the instruction of our Torah and the instruction of our Nesi’im,
and upon whom can we rely but upon our Father in heaven77. And in our Torah there is a clear ruling in the Rambam that one must always yearn and wait for the coming of Moshiach Tzidkeinu.
And there is a clear instruction from our Nesi’im,
that how does one bring closer the Redemption –
through “May your springs spread forth outward”78,
not the water of the springs,
but to spread the springs themselves outward to the outside79.
This is in a general manner. Afterwards this must descend into particular service,
as explained in Kuntres HaAvodah80,
that the service must also be in particularity and then it is in perfection –
That one must do in all campaigns:
love of Israel until the unity of Israel,
which is connected with the education of oneself and the education of others. And from these general principles come the particular channels:
Torah –
and “great is study that leads to action”81 –
tefillin,
mezuzah,
charity,
a house full of books –
Yavneh and its sages –
kashrut of food, drink, and utensils,
Shabbat Kodesh and Yom Tov candles and family purity,
Until the matter that is dependent on time –
the unity of Israel –
founded on love of Israel82,
through the fact that every Jew receives a letter in one of the general Sifrei Torah. Which unites all Jews together until the Sefer Torah that Moshe Rabbeinu wrote on the day of his death,
when “all the labor of man that his soul labored in his life” is revealed83,
similar to how it is on the birthday. And especially since the death of Moshe was on his birthday84.
And Moshe,
the Shepherd of Israel,
Raaya Meheimna,
conveys this to all Jews,
as it is stated regarding every Jew “What does Hashem your G-d ask of you but to fear etc.”85,
because regarding Moshe it is a small matter86.
And the greatness of the matter of unity is also emphasized and explained in the discourse of the Baal HaYom HaHuledes of Parshat Noach 564387,
which was now published in print88,
and also in Torah Or at the end of Parshat Noach. For after Parshat Noach comes Parshat Lech Lecha,
which is the Shabbat from which we go,
and from which all the days are blessed89,
also this Shabbat,
Parshat Vayeira,
the 20th of Cheshvan.
And through the totality of the service of Jews now,
and especially –
the spreading of the wellsprings outward,
and especially since this year is the hundredth year from the beginning of the Nesius of the Rebbe N"E,
for one hundred is “the inclusive principle of all”. And although it is only the beginning of the hundredth year,
nevertheless “one day in a year is considered a year”90 –
we bring closer the coming of Moshiach Tzidkeinu even more,
and “Awake and sing, you who dwell in the dust”91,
and we all go together to the Holy Land,
and there specifically to Yerushalayim the Holy City,
“the city that is united together”92,
and there specifically to the third Beis HaMikdash,
“the Sanctuary, Hashem, which Your hands established”93,
speedily in our days, literally,
And the vessel and preparation for this is the spreading of the wellsprings outward,
And speedily in our days, literally,
and with joy and a good heart.
Continuing from what was discussed above, that on the 20th of Cheshvan this year begins the year 123 from the birth of the Rebbe N"E –
look for a Jew,
as with every matter,
immediately wherever the number 123 is mentioned in Torah,
even in practical halachah.
The Rambam mentions it in his book Yad HaChazakah in –
Hilchos Chanukah
In the fixed calendar of this year, Chanukah has a special connection with the 20th of Cheshvan
(and Rosh HaShanah):
It was discussed above that the 20th of Cheshvan must always fall on the same day of the week as
(the first day of)
Rosh HaShanah,
but Chanukah does not always have to fall on the same day of the week
(because the month of Cheshvan is sometimes full and sometimes lacking).
In the fixed calendar of this year, however,
the first day of Chanukah falls on Shabbat,
the same day of the week as the 20th of Cheshvan and Rosh HaShanah.
And just as the beginning and end of the month of Tishrei were
(in this year)
on Shabbat –
Rosh HaShanah,
the beginning of the month,
was on Shabbat,
and Shmini Atzeres,
the time of absorption and the conclusion and seal of the month,
was on Shabbat –
so too the beginning and end of Chanukah in this year are on Shabbat,
the first day of Chanukah is Shabbat,
and the last day of Chanukah,
“Zos Chanukah”
(as it is called),
is Shabbat –
The Rambam writes in Hilchos Chanukah94 regarding the laws of saying Hallel,
when he discusses the custom of saying Hallel "in the days of the early Sages":
"After the one who leads the Hallel recites the blessing, he begins and says Halleluyah, and all the people answer Halleluyah; and he repeats and says 'Praise, servants of Hashem,' and all the people answer Halleluyah; and he repeats and says 'Praise the name of Hashem,' and all the people answer Halleluyah; and he repeats and says 'May the name of Hashem be blessed from now and forever,' and all the people answer Halleluyah,
and so for every utterance,
until they are found answering Halleluyah throughout the entire Hallel one hundred and twenty-three times,
a sign for them of the years of Aharon." And the source for this is from the Yerushalmi.95 And further.96
This was discussed at length once,97
that seemingly there is a wonder:
Why did the Rambam place the laws of Hallel in Hilchos Chanukah,
and not in Hilchos Tefillah or in Hilchos Yom Tov which come before
(in the Rambam) –
because saying Hallel is an obligation not only on Chanukah,
but also at other times,
half Hallel,
or full Hallel,
as is known98 the mnemonic for this "B'B'TaCh",
from the phrase "Bitchu VaHashem"99 –
because a mnemonic in Torah is not only to remember the matter,
but it also has a connection in the content of the matter.100 And it was also discussed then101:
What is relevant in a book of laws
(Yad HaChazakah)
that "a sign for them of the years of Aharon"? And also whether the answering of Halleluyah by the people is initially,
and one fulfills his obligation through the saying of Hallel by the chazzan,
or not, etc.
As discussed then.
In any case –
from this Rambam we see two matters in the number 123: (a)
That they answered in Hallel "Halleluyah" 123 times. (b)
That this is connected to the years of Aharon,
which were 123.
From the fact that the years of Aharon were 123 it is understood,
that 123 is a completeness in service,
which is why Aharon did not live less or more than this,
because specifically in 123 years he achieved the completeness of his service.
And so it is also with all Jews,
that there is a completeness in their service connected to 123 –
because every Jew is commanded "Be of the students of Aharon".102
And now one does not need to go through 123 years in actuality in order to have this completeness of service
(as it was with Aharon),
rather this is in the matter of the completeness of service which consists of 123.
And in addition to this
(the connection of 123 to these two matters – Hallel,
and the years of Aharon)
123 also has a connection to Chanukah,
which is why the Rambam places this in Hilchos Chanukah
(as the explanation of this is,
as discussed then).
That from all these three matters connected to 123 in Torah – Hallel,
the years of Aharon,
and Chanukah –
there must be a lesson for every individual,
as follows.
The lesson connected to Chanukah:
Chanukah is named for and connected to the Chanukas HaBayis103 and Chanukas HaMizbeiach,104
which occurred during Chanukah for the first time.105
The matter of Chinuch is –
from the term beginning,
as Rashi explains,106
that then one begins a new service
(or one renews a service),
therefore one must then perform special matters so that the service afterwards should be in its completeness. As it was during the seven days of the Miluim
(the days of Chinuch)
in the Mishkan.
And the matter of Chanukas HaBayis is not only regarding the Beis HaMikdash and the Mizbeiach,
but also regarding every private home.107 As is known the maamar of the Alter Rebbe beginning "Mizmor Shir Chanukas HaBayis",
regarding which it is recorded that the Alter Rebbe said the maamar "at the Chanukas HaBayis of the study hall"108,
and in other versions109 –
at a private Chanukas HaBayis of a Jew. And he explains there that one makes a Chanukas HaBayis for every home of a Jew. And this is connected to the Chanukas HaBayis of the Beis HaMikdash,
as it is said "And I will dwell in their midst –
in the midst of each and every one",
in every physical home of a Jew,
even though this is in this world,
in the time of exile.
That is, in addition to that the entirety of this world becomes a dwelling place for Him, blessed be He, in the lower realms –
a Jewish home is specifically a house for Hashem,
about which Hashem said "And I will dwell in their midst".
From this the lesson of Chanukah is understood,
that in each and every one of Israel –
also "and every one",
as is known the instruction of the Rebbe, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, that Chinuch must be both for sons and for daughters –
the service must begin anew with performing special matters so that the service should be in completeness.
And especially, the service must consist of illuminating
(at the entrance of his house)
the outside
(the concept of Chanukah)
110
110 –
illuminating also other Jews who are found outside,
until illuminating the entire outside.
Until it should be "the end and the exile of Tadmor"111,
"Tadmor is an acronym for 'rebellious'"111
(as the Baal HaYom Huledes brings down in several of his maamarim112),
that one should effect also in the world where there is the possibility of rebellion,
until in "the foot of Tadmor",
that it should be "And Hashem shall be King over all the earth"113,
and also among the nations of the world it should be "And all the peoples of the earth shall see that the name of Hashem is called upon you, and they shall fear you"114,
and consequently, there is already now a foretaste of the concept of "And kings shall be your foster fathers, and their queens your nursing mothers"115,
because "their mazal sees"116,
that even though it is still before the coming of Moshiach,
there is a foretaste of this among the nations of the world,
that they help Jews out in the aforementioned direction so that Jews can add even more in Torah and mitzvos.
And when one does the service anew in a manner of chinuch –
this is connected with Hallel,
with praising and lauding the Supreme One for all matters.
The aforementioned service –
illuminating also the outside,
until "the end and the exile of Tadmor" –
is connected with the service of Aharon:
The Mishnah gives a directive to every Jew: "Be of the disciples of Aharon, loving peace and pursuing peace, loving the creatures and drawing them near to the Torah." Since this is a directive in the Mishnah, it applies to each and every one simply,
because "one who errs in a Mishnah matter returns"117,
for in a Mishnah it is not possible to make a mistake from the outset. Simply, this means,
that every Jew must love other Jews and draw them near to the Torah. Even those Jews who are called by the name "creatures",
i.e., they are on the lowest level118,
in the outside,
and also draw them near to the Torah.
And not in a manner that because they are creatures,
one takes something away from the Torah and makes compromises,
and one lowers the Torah to them, Heaven forbid,
but on the contrary –
"and drawing them near to the Torah",
one must elevate them and draw them near to the Torah,
in a manner that the Torah remains in its completeness as it is.
And then there is the unity of all Israel,
"one nation in the land"119,
because one connects all Jews with one Torah,
a complete Torah,
the revealed part of the Torah together with the inner dimension of the Torah
(as above, section 10).
And through this one effects, as it were, unity in all levels of Elokus,
until it becomes also in the world,
as I am written, so I am read120,
"Hashem is One and His Name is One"121,
until even a gentile in the world hears the explicit Name as I am written.
And together with unity in Torah,
one Torah,
the completeness of the Torah,
one has the completeness of the land,
one land,
and the completeness of the people,
"one nation in the land",
and "with our young and with our old, with our sons and with our daughters"121,
"a great congregation shall return here"122,
one goes out from exile,
and one enters into the true and complete redemption in its simple sense,
as the Rebbe Maharash said that one must have the redemption in its simple sense below ten handbreadths,
and speedily, in our days, literally.
In continuation of what was discussed above regarding the undertaking of the Baal HaYom Huledes,
to connect the study of Chassidus –
and the study of the revealed Torah in a manner of a complete Torah123 –
we will discuss a matter in the revealed Torah
(briefly)
In connection with what was discussed earlier, that this year marks one hundred years from the beginning of the nesius of the Baal HaYom Huledes. His birth was one hundred and twenty-three years ago,
and the concept of one hundred years is connected with the beginning of his nesius –
the histalkus of his father,
the Rebbe Maharash,
was in the year 5643,
and the sun set and the sun rose –
immediately124 the nesius of his son, who filled his place, began.
There is the well-known question:
In the "Introduction" to the kuntres "Chanoch LaNaar"125
(the first will of the Baal HaYom Huledes)
are printed the "Chapter headings from the history of the life" of the Rebbe Rashab,
written by the Nasi of our generation,
and there he writes in connection with the year 5654:
"Began on the night of Rosh Hashanah 5654, established the place of his prayer in the synagogue in the place where his father, the Rebbe Maharash, prayed –
until then he prayed in his designated place in the synagogue during his father's lifetime."
Based on this, it emerges,
apparently,
that the beginning of his nesius was from Rosh Hashanah 5654;
אז די התחלת הנשיאות שלו איז געווען פון ר"ה תרנ"ד;
and not in the year 5643?
Since this is a question in a most essential matter,
relevant to actual practice etc. etc. –
it is simple that first and foremost we must seek in halachah,
in the laws of a Nasi and king
(because a Nasi of our generation is a king,
whose sign and definition is as stated in Horayos 126 "Who is a Nasi? This is a king...
over whom there is none but Hashem his G-d" and not,
be it differentiated,
a mortal who tells him to multiply silver and gold,
and honor and fifty runners before him etc. –
as Adoniyahu did 127).
In the Alter Rebbe's Shulchan Aruch,
and before that in the Shulchan Aruch of the Beis Yosef –
there are not
(explicitly)
the laws of a king –
but in the Rambam,
in his work Mishneh Torah,
the conclusion and seal of the book is "Laws of Kings
(and their Wars)".
We find in the Rambam a law
(regarding a king)
that is about the aforementioned question regarding the Nesius of the Rebbe Maharash n"y:
The law is 128,
that "when they appoint the king, they anoint him with the anointing oil"
[the kings of the House of David with the anointing oil,
and the kings of Israel "with balsam oil" 129].
But a "king the son of a king" does not require anointing 130,
because "the monarchy is an inheritance for the king forever" 131.
This is not a matter of deficiency, G-d forbid,
that for a king the son of a king the matter of anointing is lacking, G-d forbid,
but the explanation of this is,
that the anointing of the father is drawn down upon the son. Just as with the father himself,
he does not need an anointing every day,
but the one and only anointing at the beginning of his Nesius is drawn down throughout all the days of his life,
so too it is drawn down upon his son. And it is sweetened according to what has been discussed many times,
that an heir is the very essence of the bequeather 132. And especially regarding the kings of the House of David, about whom "the monarchy is for him and his sons...
forever" 128
But when there is a doubt whether the son will be the king –
because there is an older brother,
etc. –
he requires anointing,
as the Rambam explains 133 that therefore "they anointed Shlomo because of Adoniyahu...
Yehoachaz because of Yehoyakim his brother".
In this, however,
one can learn in two ways:
A) The anointing effects that he should become a king. And before he is anointed, he is not a king.
Like the first anointing –
and as the ruling of the Rambam regarding the Kohen Gadol in the Laws of the Vessels of the Sanctuary 134,
that a Kohen Gadol
(the anointed Kohen),
who requires "anointing with oil seven days, day after day",
that "if he served...
before he was anointed all seven days, his service is valid, since...
once he was anointed, he becomes a Kohen Gadol for everything". From this it is understood,
that if he served before he was anointed once, his service is invalid. The anointing effects the matter of the Kehunah Gedolah,
before it he is not a Kohen Gadol.
And likewise –
it is understood regarding a king –
whom the Rambam brings there in the same category as the Kohen Gadol –
regarding his offerings etc.
B) Through the anointing it is revealed retroactively that he was from the outset
(the heir, and) king.
And a practical difference in halachah:
(Most of)
the offerings of a king who commits a sin
(inadvertently)
are different from the offerings of a commoner who sinned 135. In this, his status at the time of the sin is relevant:
If the sin was while he was still a commoner,
then even if he immediately afterwards became a king,
he must bring an offering
(for this sin)
as a commoner.
It follows in our case,
that there will be a practical difference
(between the two aforementioned ways)
regarding the offerings for a sin that he committed between the death of his father the king and his anointing;
בנוגע די קרבנות אויף א חטא וואס ער האט געטאן צווישן מיתת אביו המלך און זיין משיחה;
if one would say,
that the anointing effects that he should become a king,
but before that he is not a king,
he must bring an offering as a commoner;
דארף ער ברענגען א קרבן ווי א הדיוט;
but if the anointing reveals that retroactively he was a king,
he must bring an offering as a king.
And the clarification in this investigation,
will also be a clarification for our matter,
regarding the Nesius of the Rebbe n"y,
where also there was an older brother,
and especially since the Rebbe n"y himself extolled the greatness of his brother. –
And consequently, consequently the Nesius did not come in a spontaneous manner,
but he required "anointing". And his "anointing" was only in the year 5654,
when he "fixed the place of his prayer...
in the place where his holy father prayed"
(but not before).
Only in this very matter can one also say two ways
(similar to the above regarding the anointing of a king who is the son of a king):
A) That his leadership began from that time. B) After the "anointing" in the year 5654,
it is revealed retroactively,
that he was the leader immediately after the passing of his father.
In truth, however,
it is implied from the Rambam,
that the anointing of a king who is the son of a king is not to establish his kingship:
When stating the law130,
that a king who is the son of a king "where there was a dispute" requires anointing,
the Rambam adds the reason –
"in order to settle the dispute".
Parenthetical remark:
The Rambam brings this matter both in the Laws of the Temple Vessels and in the Laws of Kings,
but with a difference:
In the Laws of the Temple Vessels the Rambam adds "and to make known to all that this one is the sole king". And seemingly, why does he not say this matter also in the Laws of Kings –
the place for this would be more fitting in the Laws of Kings
(where it speaks about matters of kings)
more than in the Laws of the Temple Vessels?
Seemingly, one could answer based on the well-known principle136 that the Rambam
(in the Book of the Hand)
relies on what he wrote previously.
And so regarding our matter:
Since the Laws of the Temple Vessels come before the Laws of Kings,
the Rambam is brief in the Laws of Kings and writes only the general matter,
and relies on what he said in the Laws of the Temple Vessels.
But this is a great difficulty,
because:
A) Here it is entirely about a few words,
B) And primarily:
The matter of "to make known to all that this one is the sole king" is an essential matter in kingship –
because a king is not
(only)
for himself,
so that when he becomes king,
higher powers are revealed in him,
but for the sake of the nation,
that the nation accepts him as king,
and consequently it must be known to all that he is the "sole king",
And similar to what the Rambam says137 "They do not appoint a king...
not a scribe...
and not a tanner,
not because they are unfit, but because their trade is degrading, the people will always despise them",
And consequently, the Rambam in the Laws of Kings should seemingly have emphasized that the anointing is not only "to settle the dispute"
(from his brothers),
but for the sake of the matter of
(the honor)
of kingship itself,
"to make known to all that this one is the sole king".
From this it is implied,
that there are two matters:
A) As this is a law in the Laws of
(the Temple Vessels),
the anointing oil,
in which the matter of "to make known to all that this one is the sole king" is also relevant;
וואס אין דעם איז נוגע אויך דעם ענין פון "להודיע לכל שזהו מלך לבדו";
B) As this is a law in the Laws of Kings,
in which respect the reason of "to settle the dispute" is sufficient.
And further investigation is needed. –
Regarding our matter:
From the fact that the Rambam says that the reason for anointing is "in order to settle the dispute",
it is understood,
that the anointing is not to establish kingship,
but only to prevent a secondary matter
(dispute etc.),
but his kingship takes effect immediately after his father's death.
And so regarding our matter,
that although the "anointing" of the Rebbe, may his memory be for the life of the World to Come, was only in the year 5654,
nevertheless, through this it is revealed retroactively that his leadership began immediately in the year 5643.
This reasoning, however, is not sufficient. Because:
A) There are opinions138 that also the anointing of a king who is the son of a king where there was a dispute establishes his kingship. B) Even according to the opinion of the Rambam that this is only "in order to settle the dispute",
nevertheless, the very fact that his kingship is in a manner that a dispute can exist over it
(from his brothers) –
indicates,
that his kingship is not complete.
But in truth, the entire aforementioned discussion is not relevant to our matter,
because in our case the leadership of the Rebbe, may his memory be for the life of the World to Come, began from the outset immediately after the passing of his father.
The explanation of this:
In the matter of "anointing" there is a difference between a king in the simple sense,
in the time of the Temple,
and a leader in the time of exile. A king in the simple sense must be anointed physically * with oil in the simple sense. This cannot be replaced by other physical matters,
and certainly not by spiritual matters.
However, regarding a leader in the time of exile,
although this is a matter of a king,
nevertheless,
there is no matter of physical anointing * nor even with balsam oil,
we do not find this anointing either by the Exilarch in Babylon or by Rabbeinu HaKadosh.
And it is perplexing regarding the kings and leaders –
in the time of the Second Temple.
But the matter of anointing regarding a Nasi in the time of exile is about other things –
in the matters of his leadership. –
And regarding the halachah –
Vessels that Moshe made, their anointing sanctifies them; from then on, their service initiates them139. And in this there are several matters
(in addition to that which he sits on the throne),
and in general:
his conduct of leadership,
and that which the people accept him as their Nasi.
"Its service" regarding leadership as in our case –
is saying Chassidus –
not merely repeating Chassidus,
but saying Chassidus. And on the contrary –
in this consists the primary matter of leadership,
to raise the true religion etc. and to wage the war of Hashem
(the evil inclination)
etc. to execute judgment140,
may his wellsprings spread forth outward.
We find regarding the Rebbe, may his soul be at rest,
that he began to say Chassidus
(as his honor, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, writes in the aforementioned outlines141)
immediately after the passing of his father:
"The first discourse which he said in public on the second day of Chol HaMoed Sukkos". And this was still within the seven days after the passing
[the matter of the seven days of deficiency (mourning) was nullified immediately when Sukkos arrived142,
but certainly there are matters of superiority related to the passing that have a connection to the first seven days] –
so within these seven days he already said Chassidus in public.
One can argue about this –
there is an explicit hint for this:
The discourse that the Rebbe, may his soul be at rest, said on the aforementioned Sukkos, "begins 'Keser yitnu lach'",
for Keser is the most essential matter regarding kingship *.
And particularly according to how the birthday celebrant explains in several of his discourses the matter of the crowns that Jews make
(through the angels)
for the Most High,
and he brings the parable of the Midrash143 of the citizens who made three crowns for the king,
and the king took one for Himself and placed two on the heads of His sons. From this it is understood,
that "Keser yitnu lach" is also connected to the crowns that He places on the heads of His sons.
Another point in this:
The "Keser yitnu lach" is made by the citizens,
the service of Jews,
as our Sages said144 that Metatron binds crowns for his Maker from the prayers of Israel
(as the birthday celebrant brings in his discourses).
That is, Jews are the ones who crown the Most High
(and this goes through angels).
Which in general is the service of Rosh Hashanah,
when Jews say "Make Me king over you"145.
And just as the matter of "Make Me king over you"
("Keser yitnu lach")
is connected to the "head" in time
(Rosh Hashanah) –
so too is this connected to the "head" of the Jews.
From all the above it is understood,
that the very fact that the Rebbe, may his soul be at rest, said a discourse of Chassidus in public immediately after the passing of his father,
and moreover a discourse beginning "Keser yitnu lach",
and particularly that this was said on Sukkos which is connected to King Shlomo,
and the inauguration of the Temple146 through "and Shlomo sat on the throne of Hashem"147 –
this very thing is the matter of anointing and the beginning of leadership in actuality. And one need not arrive at the aforementioned explanation of it being revealed retroactively.
But it remains not understood:
According to this,
why did the Rebbe, may his soul be at rest, wait to establish his place of prayer in the synagogue in the place where his father prayed until 5654?
This is a separate question,
which does not affect nor detract from the explanation in our case.
And let each one answer this for himself.
And it can be said, close to certain, that the Rebbe, may his soul be at rest, did not establish his place of prayer in his father's place until 5654 because of the honor of his older brother. And afterwards his brother left,
or that after 5654
(after ten years)
one could
(the change of his place of prayer)
no longer attribute it to any reason.
Since the Rebbe, may his soul be at rest, became a Nasi in Israel in the year 5643
(as explained above),
this year becomes one hundred years from the beginning of his leadership –
consequently in this year,
and particularly on the 20th of MarCheshvan,
his birthday,
when his mazal prevails148,
each person receives a special empowerment from the Rebbe, may his soul be at rest, to conduct himself in all matters in his ways,
What this is in general –
involvement in spreading the wellsprings outward. And especially –
the study of Torah,
the Torah campaign,
the revealed aspect of Torah together with the inner aspect of Torah
(in the introduction of Birkat HaTorah),
as it was by the Rebbe, of blessed memory,
that on the second day of Chol HaMoed Sukkot there was the recitation of Chassidus with the discourse "Keter Yitnu Lach",
and together with the service of prayer,
for "Keter Yitnu Lach" is connected with the service of prayer,
through which the angel Metatron binds crowns for his Master,
for in the prayer of Israel one must reach the angels so that they embrace and kiss them, etc.149
And especially since the twentieth of MarCheshvan this year falls on Shabbat,
and Shabbat is connected with
(the innermost aspect of the soul,
which is in general –
the faculty of the)
delight,
which is the innermost aspect of the faculties. And in Torah this is the inner aspect of Torah.
And through all of our deeds and service now, and especially through spreading the wellsprings outward,
we further bring near and hasten "the King Messiah is coming"150,
speedily in our days, literally.
He instructed to sing and said the discourse beginning "VaHashem Pakad et Sarah".
As usual, to study a verse in the weekly portion with Rashi's commentary,
and in continuation of what was previously discussed regarding the matter of unity,
we will focus on a Rashi commentary on this subject.
And to speak in both aspects:
both in the positive –
a matter upon which Rashi comments,
and in the negative –
a difficulty in the plain meaning of the verse
(which Rashi should have answered)
and apparently one does not find that Rashi answers it in his commentary –
and as discussed several times,
that since Rashi explains the plain meaning of the verse,
one must say,
that every question that arises in the plain meaning of the verses is addressed in Rashi's commentary on the Torah.
Just as we previously reviewed the discourse on the verse151 "VaHashem Pakad et Sarah",
we will also focus on Rashi's commentary on this verse:
Rashi quotes from the verse "VaHashem Pakad et Sarah",
and adds "etc." –
Which,
as discussed several times,
indicates,
that also the subsequent words in the verse are relevant to his commentary. But in this case it is not understood:
Seemingly, in this Rashi commentary only the matter of "VaHashem Pakad et Sarah" is relevant,
and on the contrary –
the subsequent words "as He said, etc., as He spoke" are seemingly a contradiction to this Rashi commentary,
as will be explained below.
And he explains:
"This section is juxtaposed –
as it appears in several editions152
(the word 'here'),
and in any case this is Rashi's intent: why is the section of 'VaHashem Pakad, etc.' placed in continuation of the incident with Avimelech –
to teach you that whoever asks for mercy and he needs that same thing –
for Avraham was 'in need of that same thing',
that with him there should be 'and they will bear children' –
he is answered first,
as it is stated153 'And he prayed, etc., and adjacent to it, "VaHashem Pakad et Sarah" – that He had already remembered her before He healed Avimelech.' –
All the commentators on Rashi154 raise a question:
What is the initial question in that 'this section is juxtaposed' –
this is indeed the place
(according to the chronological order)
of this section:
At the beginning of the portion155 it tells about the angels who came to Avraham,
one of whom came 'to inform Sarah' and one –
to overturn Sodom;
להפוך את סדום;
and following this the verse tells how the angels went from there to Sodom;
ובהמשך לזה דערציילט דער פסוק ווי די מלאכים זיינען פון דארט געגאנגען צו סדום;
after the overturning of Sodom Avraham departed from Lot –
as Rashi explains156 because 'the travelers and passersby ceased'
(and consequently he had no guests) –
to Gerar,
the place of Avimelech,
and there the incident with Sarah occurred;
און דארט איז געשען די מעשה מיט שרה;
and afterwards came 'VaHashem Pakad et Sarah' –
so how can one say that 'this section is juxtaposed to teach you, etc.'?
The commentators on Rashi157 connect this with the dispute in the Gemara158 that Sarah was remembered on Rosh Hashanah and that the birth of Yitzchak
[which was on Pesach]
was after seven months and 'truncated'.
But:
a) This is a dispute in the halachic part of Torah,
not in the plain meaning of the verse.
[And as discussed several times,
that the aforementioned commentators on Rashi explain Rashi's commentary according to halachah and according to homiletics, etc.,
but not (always) according to the plain meaning.]
b) Rashi does not bring down at all the dispute whether the birth of Yitzchak was after seven months, etc.
Afterwards one must understand,
what Rashi says that from the juxtaposition we learn 'that whoever asks for mercy on behalf of his fellow and he needs that same thing is answered first':
In this concept of "he is answered first," the novelty is not only in the "first"
(that the "he is answered" would have been in any case,
but "one who asks mercy for his friend" causes that he should be answered first,
before his friend) –
but also in the "he is answered":
The main thing that is revealed through "one who asks mercy for his friend" is that "he is answered,"
only that in this there is an additional quality,
that he
(is not only "answered," but)
"answered first." And as understood from several midrashim of Chazal where this concept is brought.
Therefore it is not understood:
How can one learn from there that "one who asks mercy for his friend etc. he is answered" –
the verse itself continues,
that "And Hashem remembered Sarah" came
(not because Avraham prayed for his friend, but)
"as He had said...
as He had spoken" –
due to the promise from the Most High;
מצד דער הבטחה פון אויבערשטן;
And as Rashi explains that the verse thereby includes both things –
not only "as He had spoken –
at birth",
but also "as He had said –
at conception"
(the concept of "And Hashem remembered Sarah"),
And both promises
(as He had said...
as He had spoken)
were before the incident of Avimelech,
as Rashi himself explains "And where is the saying and where is the speaking,
the saying: 'And God said, But Sarah your wife etc.'159,
the speaking: 'The word of Hashem came to Avram in the covenant between the parts'160 etc."
The difficulty in all the above is even greater:
After Rashi quotes from the verse the words "And Hashem remembered Sarah" he adds "etc.",
which means that one should look at the following words –
which according to the above turns out
that they contradict this Rashi?
Even without the addition of "etc.",
the explanation of Rashi is also not understood;
איז אויך ניט פארשטאנדיק דער פירוש רש"י;
but when Rashi himself adds the "etc.",
this increases the aforementioned difficulty.
And as will be explained later.
In our parshah there is also a matter which is seemingly not understood in the simple meaning of the verse,
and Rashi does not explain it:
In connection with the fact that the Most High destroyed Sedom and Amorah and the other two cities because of their evil deeds –
the parshah relates a whole lengthy account only about Sedom,
how the angels came there and saw the evil deeds there etc.
And afterwards the verse says161 "And Hashem rained upon Sedom and upon Amorah brimstone and fire etc.",
"And He overturned those cities etc."162 –
"the four of them
(Sedom,
Amorah,
Tzvoim and [the Rebbe shlita laughed and asked one: Nu –
what is the name of the fourth city?...
) dwelling on one rock and He overturned them from above to below etc."163.
It is entirely not understood:
A) Why is a lengthy account related only about Sedom,
and afterwards it says "And Hashem rained upon Sedom and upon Amorah brimstone and fire"? Whichever way you look at it:
If in Amorah there was the same wickedness as in Sedom,
the verse should have related about it,
and if not –
why does Amorah receive the same punishment as Sedom?
B) Why does it say "rained brimstone and fire" only upon Sedom and upon Amorah and not upon the other two cities,
where it only says "and He overturned"?
C) How does the term "rained" fit,
which means the descent of rain and showers,
regarding brimstone and fire –
they are two separate matters?
Granted, regarding the Flood Rashi explains164 why there it says "and the rain was upon the earth" and in the second place165 "and the flood was" –
because "when He brought them down He brought them down with mercy,
if they would repent they would be rains of blessing and when they did not repent they became a flood" –
but in our case Rashi does not explain why it says "and He rained" regarding brimstone and fire.
All these diyukim are not understood in the simple meaning of the verse and therefore Rashi seemingly should have explained them,
and nevertheless he does not explain them.
And it is weak, as will be explained later, how this is either initially not a question for a five-year-old studying Scripture in the simple meaning of the verse,
or he understands it from what Rashi already explained in a previous explanation
(and not in a later explanation –
later because the five-year-old has not yet learned it,
unless Rashi brings it down to the place where the five-year-old is holding).
In order to conclude with a good thing –
we will speak about the lesson that is derived from the first matter in Rashi,
"to teach you that anyone who asks mercy for his friend and he needs that same thing, he is answered first" –
regarding the greatness of the concept of Ahavas Yisrael:
When someone lacks something, it is a positive commandment that he pray to the Supreme One that He fulfill it for him.166
This applies at all times,
and regarding each and every one,
also women. Regarding the time of prayer,
which is rabbinic,167
this applies specifically to men,
but regarding the general matter of prayer for what one lacks,
it is a positive commandment upon each and every one to pray to Hashem.
So when someone lacks something,
the “clever one” comes to him and argues:
“First of all, fulfill the positive commandment and pray to the Supreme One that He give you what you lack. What place is there to go see if your friend lacks the same thing and to pray on behalf of your friend? After all, ‘your life takes precedence’168
(as the Alter Rebbe brings in Iggeret HaKodesh169)!”
We have the teaching of Rashi in our parshah on the greatness of the matter of Ahavat Yisrael –
if someone lacks a certain thing,
he should see whether his friend does not lack the same thing,
and if yes –
then “whoever asks for mercy for his friend, when he himself needs that same thing, is answered first”!
And to such an extent is the teaching on Ahavat Yisrael to pray on behalf of one’s friend,
that –
even if one’s friend does not need to attain that thing as much as he himself needs to attain it –
he must also pray on behalf of his friend, and specifically then he is answered first.
As was the case with Avraham and Avimelech:
That which Avraham prayed for Avimelech that he be healed and be able to have children,
it is understood that Avimelech would receive additional children,
after he already had children beforehand;
נאך דעם ווי ער האט שוין געהאט קינדער לפנ"ז;
whereas Avraham himself had no children
(from Sarah),
and for him Yitzchak was to be born,
and afterwards there would be “and I will multiply you exceedingly,”170
“and I will make you exceedingly fruitful,”171
“and I will greatly multiply your seed as the stars of the heavens and as the sand which is on the seashore,”172
which is infinitely more than what Avimelech was to have. For Avimelech, another child would be born –
so what greatness is that?
Whereas for Avraham, his only child was to be born,
“and I will multiply his seed and give him Yitzchak”!
Nevertheless, it is said that Avraham prayed first for Avimelech,
and therefore he was answered first,
and the Supreme One arranged that Avraham be blessed with the birth of Yitzchak!
From this we have the instruction as to how great Ahavat Yisrael must be,
that even when a Jew needs that same thing,
he must first of all see whether his friend does not lack the same thing, and then pray on behalf of his friend.
And since Rashi brings this down in his commentary on the Torah,
it is understood that this is an instruction also for a child of five studying Scripture –
that when he lacks something,
he should first go see whether his friend does not lack that thing,
and ask the Supreme One for his friend,
and then he is answered first.
That is, the matter of Ahavat Yisrael as expressed in his asking for mercy for his friend is among those matters of which a person eats the fruits in this world,173
one receives reward for it in this world,
that if he needs that same thing
(for which he prayed on behalf of his friend),
he is answered first.
And here the intention of the one praying is not relevant:
Even if he prays for his friend because he knows that through this he will be answered first –
it is also good. Because what difference does it make regarding his friend why he is praying,
as long as he prays and the Supreme One fulfills his request and prayer. Therefore the one praying receives the reward that he is answered first.
Not like the case of “whoever flees from honor, honor pursues him”:174
If someone flees from honor because he knows that then honor will pursue him,
and he even publicizes it so that it be known about him,
that his fleeing from honor is because then honor will run after him –
it is understood what place that has;
איז מובן וואס פאר אן ארט דאס האט;
Not so in our case, it does not affect the intention of the one praying,
even if he thinks that he is praying for his fellow because he is answered first,
nevertheless in practice there is no difference regarding his fellow,
because the other receives what he lacks.
As this is with Avimelech and Avraham:
even if Avraham prayed for Avimelech because he knew that he is answered first,
what difference does it make to Avimelech –
as long as he was healed. Consequently, Avraham receives the reward that he is answered first.
And similarly, as this is with the mitzvah of charity:
It states in the Sifri175 "one who loses a sela from his hand and a poor person finds it" has fulfilled the mitzvah of charity. Because through this sela "the life of the poor person was revived"176,
what difference does it make what the intention of the one who lost it was. And it is known in the name of the Baal Shem Tov177 that the mitzvah of charity is among the mitzvos in which intention is not relevant.
And through the fact that among Jews there will be love of Israel in particular,
and in the aforementioned manner –
this will further hasten the nullification of the exile,
which came about because of the opposite of causeless love.
And very soon we will reach the time when it will be "on the mountain of Hashem it will be seen"
(as it states at the end of our parshah178),
in the third Beis HaMikdash,
"the Sanctuary of my Lord that Your hands established",
speedily in our days, literally.
In the Zohar in our parshah179 a story is told,
that Rabbi Acha once went to a small town,
Kfar Tarsha,
where due to undesirable deeds in this village there was a decree upon the inhabitants of the village. Rabbi Acha nullified the decree. Afterwards a bas kol went out that Rabbi Acha must also cause the inhabitants of the village to repent. So "he arose and returned them in complete repentance,
and they accepted upon themselves that they would never cease from Torah
(that in this village they would always learn Torah).
And they changed the name of the town and called it Masya Machsi'a".
The Tatteh stands upon this in his glosses on the Zohar180 and explains the matter of the change of the name of the village,
"because a change of name is effective to nullify the decree in the manner stated in Rosh HaShanah 16b". And he continues to explain:
"And they changed from village to city and from Tarsha to Machsi'a,
because village alludes to gevuros and dinim",
and he brings on this several gematrias which prove that village is connected with gevuros and dinim. And simply, the connection of village with gevuros and dinim is,
that a village is a small,
constricted place. "And Tarsha means stone and hard rock
(which do not produce growth),
also in the aspect of gevuros and dinim,
and because of this there was a plague there, may Hashem spare us.
And they changed to Masya Machsi'a,
Masya is a large city in the aspect of chassadim
(and simply –
that a city relative to a village is spaciousness,
the matter of chassadim),
Masya are the letters of Emes,
from Emes life is drawn...
Machsi'a is from the term chas,
and it is that the Holy One, blessed be He, had mercy on them,
and the plague was withheld from them etc."
One must understand:
a) What is the lesson from this in the service of man.
b) What is the connection between the matter which he explains in the gloss
(in explaining the change of name from Kfar Tarsha to Masya Machsi'a)
with that the repentance of the inhabitants of the village consisted of that "they accepted upon themselves that they would never cease from Torah",
always learn Torah
(which the Tatteh does not explain in the gloss).
c) According to what is explained in the gloss it emerges that the change of name is connected with the nullification of the decree –
should it not, according to order, have been stated in the Zohar earlier,
where it speaks about the nullification of the decree,
about the change of name,
and afterwards about the repentance of the inhabitants of the village. Why is the order reversed –
first it speaks about the nullification of the decree,
afterwards about their repentance,
and finally it says "and they changed the name of the town and called it Masya Machsi'a"?
And the main thing that one must understand is,
as mentioned,
how this matter is in the service of man.
And as will be explained further.
Regarding the explanation in Rashi's commentary on "and Hashem remembered etc." –
what Rashi says "this section is adjacent" –
for a five-year-old studying Scripture it is initially not a difficulty,
because he understands it from what he has already learned several times previously;
ווייל ער פארשטייט דאס פון וואס ער האט שוין געלערנט כמה פעמים פריער;
and the matter is so simple,
that Rashi does not need to explain it at all –
the five-year-old understands it by himself:
We find immediately in Parshas Bereishis,
at the creation of man,
that the verse first tells 181 about his creation in general when the verse speaks about the sixth day of Maaseh Bereishis,
and afterwards, when the Torah concludes the account of the six days of Bereishis,
it returns to the account of the creation of man,
and begins again to tell from the beginning of his creation 182,
with all the details and minutiae,
and the creation of Chavah etc.
At first glance:
Since the Torah tells afterwards about the creation of man with all the minutiae –
why is it necessary to say it earlier in brief and in general?
For a child of five studying Scripture, this is not a difficulty at the outset:
Since the Torah wants to tell about the six days of Bereishis and what was created in them,
one cannot omit the sixth day;
קען מען דאך ניט אויסלאזן יום הששי;
therefore the Torah must complete the account of the six days of Bereishis and mention the creation of man indeed without all the details,
but at least in general,
and afterwards the Torah begins to tell about man with all the minutiae.
And similarly we find by Noach:
At the end of Parshas Bereishis it says 183 "And Noach begot Shem, Cham, and Yafes",
and afterwards,
at the beginning of Parshas Noach,
it says again "These are the generations of Noach etc. And Noach begot three sons, Shem, Cham, and Yafes". And the reason for this is simply:
In Parshas Bereishis the Torah tells "This is the book of the generations of Adam" 184 –
it enumerates the generations from Adam until Noach,
and therefore the verse tells who are the generations of Noach;
און דערפאר דערציילט דער פסוק ווער עס זיינען תולדות נח;
and afterwards the verse begins with the account in detail,
as "the wickedness of man was great in the earth etc." 185,
and about the flood etc.,
and therefore the Torah repeated about Noach and his generations.
Based on this, one will also understand in our matter:
The question that Rashi raises in the verse here –
"Why did [the Torah] juxtapose this section?" – is:
The parshah "Vayeira" comes as a continuation of Parshas Lech,
where it is told how the Almighty promised Avraham at the Covenant Between the Parts that he would have a son,
afterwards how he circumcised himself,
which brought about the "And Hashem appeared to him" 186,
and afterwards the verse tells how the Almighty sent the angels to Avraham and Sarah and he was told "I will return to you etc. and behold, a son to Sarah your wife etc." 187,
but along with this there was another mission to overturn Sodom.
It is not understandable:
At first glance, the Torah should have first completed the account of how the promise of the Holy One, blessed be He regarding the birth of Yitzchak was ultimately fulfilled,
and afterwards tell about the overturning of Sodom etc.?
And afterwards,
because of the further continuation,
the verse could repeat
(if necessary)
again about the birth of Yitzchak,
at least in general.
Because "the Torah juxtaposed this section" –
and according to several versions it should say in Rashi "this here" –
the Torah changes the order,
and instead of first completing the account of the birth of Yitzchak,
the Torah postpones it until after the account about Avimelech –
from this it is understood,
that in this there is a lesson,
Rashi says –
"To teach you that whoever pleads for mercy for his fellow, and he himself needs that same thing, he is answered first etc."
For a child of five studying Scripture, however, this is not entirely smooth:
He knows that in the Written Torah every matter,
including the order of the verses,
is with utmost precision,
even more than the Oral Torah;
נאך מער ווי תורה שבע"פ;
and consequently,
if the Torah changes the order of the verses,
this must be
(not merely a lesson, but)
a fundamental directive. What is so important,
that because of it it is worthwhile to change the order in the Written Torah.
Therefore Rashi adds in this discourse beginning "etc." –
Because the subsequent words in the verse give understanding of the greatness of the matter of "whoever pleads for mercy for his fellow etc.":
The verse is precise that "And Hashem remembered Sarah" was "as He had said...
as He had spoken",
which, as Rashi explains,
the promises of the Holy One, blessed be He were some time beforehand –
the "as He had spoken" was "at the Covenant Between the Parts",
which was thirty years before the birth of Yitzchak 188!
It turns out,
that even though there was a promise from the Almighty,
for thirty years it was not fulfilled;
איז במשך דרייסיק יאר איז זי ניט נתקיים געווארן;
and specifically when Avraham was a "pleader for mercy for his fellow",
specifically this caused it to be fulfilled in actuality!
What a tremendous matter this is,
that a matter for which one waited thirty years,
through one being a supplicant on behalf of another,
was accomplished in the course of a few minutes or hours!
One does not pay attention to this,
but according to Rashi's commentary,
that "He remembered her already before He healed Avimelech",
it turns out
that the "remembering her" was accomplished in the course of a few moments. For the verse says "And Avraham prayed to G-d, and G-d healed Avimelech etc." It is understood that the healing came immediately after Avraham's prayer;
אז דער "פקדה" האט זיך אפגעטאן במשך עטלעכע רגעים. ווארום דער פסוק זאגט "ויתפלל אברהם אל האלקים וירפא אלקים את אבימלך גו'". איז פארשטאנדיק אז די רפואה איז געקומען גלייך נאך תפלת אברהם;
it lasted no more than a few moments etc.
And in those few moments Sarah was remembered! And for this one waited thirty years!
From this there is a lesson in the greatness of the matter of love of Israel:
Even when a Jew lacks something, and even when he has a promise from the Almighty that he will receive it,
he might still think that when a time of favor arrives for praying, he should pray for himself,
and there is no place for him to pray for another who needs the same thing;
און עס האט ניט קיין ארט ער זאל בעטן פאר א צווייטן הצריך לאותו דבר;
since through prayer one awakens a new will Above
("May it be His will")
189 –
189 –
why should he go and pray and awaken a new will for another,
when he himself needs to attain it? And if he already had a promise from the Almighty,
he must surely utilize the time of favor to bring the matter into actuality for himself,
and not awaken a new will for another –
One tells him that the juxtaposition of the portion of Avimelech to the portion "And Hashem remembered Sarah" is "to teach you that whoever pleads for mercy on behalf of another, while he himself needs that same thing, is answered first":
He must first and foremost pray for his fellow,
and this specifically brings that he is answered first,
even in a matter for which he previously had a promise from the Almighty that he would receive it.
And this applies even before the giving of the Torah
(in the time of Avraham).
And all the more so is this the case after the giving of the Torah.
This is the lesson in the greatness of the matter of love of Israel,
about which there has been a stir recently,
and here one sees how in Rashi on the Torah there is a lesson in this.
Since this is stated in Rashi on the Torah –
it is a lesson even for a child of five studying Scripture. On the other hand –
it is also a lesson for those advanced in years,
for one who is already bar-mitzvah,
and twice bar-mitzvah, three times bar-mitzvah etc.
And one could elaborate on this,
but this is not the place.
The explanation in the Zohar of our portion:
The matter of the change of name from Kfar Tarsha to Mata Mechasya indeed pertains to the Zohar at the beginning of the topic
(when it speaks about the nullification of the decree),
and that which is stated at the end of the topic,
it is as we find in many places,
that first one speaks about the novelty that occurred and afterwards one returns to the essential matter with which one began.
That is, the matters that are discussed between the beginning of the topic in the Zohar
(about the nullification of the decree)
and the change of name that occurred
(which helped for the nullification of the decree)
are like a parenthetical statement,
and the matter of the change of name pertains to the beginning of the story in the Zohar.
The lesson in the service of man from that which is related in the Zohar:
The difference between a village and a city is explained in the discourses190,
that a city dweller is not comparable
(city)
who has seen the king to a village dweller who has seen the king,
as was the case with Yechezkel191. And spiritually:
a village dweller is not accustomed to the revelation of Divinity,
as was the case with Yechezkel,
therefore the revelation of the Chariot by him was with a storm.
But a city dweller is accustomed to the revelation of Divinity,
and by him "Great is Hashem and highly praised" because it is "in the city of our G-d"192.
And this is the matter in the service of man from that which is related in the Zohar, that there was a change of name from village to town
(city) –
that one transforms from a village,
gevurot and dinim,
where there is not so much revelation of Divinity,
to a city of chassadim,
so that there should be revelation of Divinity there.
And likewise the change of name from
(the village)
Tarsha to
(the town)
Machsiya:
"Tarsha means a hard stone and rock" which does not produce growth,
and one transforms it into a place that produces growth. In avodah this means –
"the fruits of the tzaddik –
commandments and good deeds"193. And through this it becomes "Machsiya",
from the term chas (to have mercy),
as the Mishnah says that through good deeds
(the fruits of the tzaddikim)
one acquires a defender
("one who performs one commandment acquires for himself one defender"),
"repentance and good deeds are like a shield against punishment",
i.e., that it protects and shields him.
Based on this, one will also understand its connection to that which "they accepted upon themselves not to desist from Torah forever":
The Gemara says in Sotah194 "Torah, both when one is engaged in it and when one is not engaged in it, protects and saves"
(unlike a commandment, which protects and saves only when one is engaged in it).
And all the more so at the time of "they accepted upon themselves not to desist from Torah forever", it is certain that this protects, shields, and saves.
May it be His will that this be brought down into actuality in involvement in the Torah campaign
(as discussed recently at length,
and also previously in brief),
in the study of the revealed aspect of Torah,
and especially –
the study of the inner dimension of Torah,
until the manner of "great is study that brings to deed" –
involvement in all the aforementioned campaigns.
Until the campaign of the Supreme One,
that He protects and shields the Jewish people,
until He brings the true and complete redemption,
with joy and a good heart.
Afterwards he said:
We will now distribute bottles of mashkeh to all those who lead countries or institutions that were not here on Simchat Torah. And each one should thereby make a farbrengen in his place,
and there speak about ahavat Yisrael and achdut Yisrael and about increasing in the dissemination of Judaism and the spreading of the wellsprings outward,
in the study of Torah and the fulfillment of the commandments,
throughout the entire year,
and about all the campaigns.
And this will further hasten the true and complete redemption,
in the manner of "behold, one like a son of man came with the clouds of heaven",
speedily in our days, literally.
In the midst of the distribution of the bottles of mashkeh, the Rebbe shlita turned to those present, may they live, and began to sing "Vi Vant Moshiach Now".
Afterwards he said:
Those who need to make a berachah acharonah will certainly make a berachah acharonah.
Afterwards he gave the food items to R. M.Y. shlita.
After the Minchah prayer, he began to sing "Yibaneh Beit HaMikdash" etc.
