English translation 1
It is Shabbat Parshat Noach.
It is Shabbat Parshat Noach.
In addition to this being the Shabbat that comes after Shabbat Bereishit,
there is also a concept in Shabbat Parshat Noach in its own right.
And in addition:
Shabbat Parshat Noach always occurs in the month of Cheshvan,
and at the beginning of the month of Cheshvan,
because Shabbat Bereishit is always Shabbat Mevarchim the month of Cheshvan,
but within the beginning of the month of Cheshvan itself, Shabbat Parshat Noach can occur on several days of the month of Cheshvan. And in this year it occurs on the 6th of Cheshvan.
And according to the well-known teaching of the Baal Shem Tov1 that from every single detail that a person sees or hears in a certain matter, he must derive a lesson in the service of Hashem –
one must derive a lesson from all these matters and details:
that this is Shabbat Parshat Noach;
אז דאס איז שבת פרשת נח;
that this comes after Shabbat Bereishit,
for first and foremost, Shabbat has a connection to the days that precede it –
"Whoever toiled on the eve of Shabbat will eat on Shabbat"<sup>2</sup>;
"מי שטרח בערב שבת יאכל בשבת" 2;
that this comes before the days of the following week,
for Shabbat also contains within it the concept that from it all the days of the following week are blessed<sup>3</sup>;
וואס שבת האט אין זיך אויך דעם ענין אז מיני' מתברכין כולי' יומי פון שבוע הבא 3;
and that this is the 6th of Cheshvan,
regarding which "each day performs its task"4,
there must be a unique lesson in the service of Hashem for each and every day.
For "each day performs its task" – the explanation of "performs its task" in the holy service –
as understood from the source of the concept of "each day performs its task",
which is stated in the Zohar regarding the Most High,
that in the Torah it is written5 "Six days did Hashem make the heavens and the earth",
"and it is not written 'in six'"
(with a letter Beit),
because each day performs its task –
the days refer to the most supernal holy Sefirot,
with which "Hashem made the heavens and the earth".
That is, the Most High utilized all His powers,
which are the Sefirot,
lights in vessels,
in perfection
(to create the world).
And since "Your people are all righteous"7 –
which refers to every Jew,
from their smallest to their greatest,
and this is also relevant in practice,
as the Mishnah8 says that "All of Israel have a share in the World to Come",
with the proof from the verse "Your people are all righteous",
which simply refers to every Jew,
except for those enumerated there9. And in truth it is known that even they will eventually have a share in the World to Come,
the difference is only in time,
as explained in the words of the Chayei Elokim,
in Chassidus10.
And it is understood
(that this refers to each and every Jew)
from the wording "All of Israel have a share in the World to Come",
where "all" simply means everyone,
not a majority or the majority as if it were the whole,
but literally all.
Similar to the term "all...
the whole of it"
("the entire world" etc.),
which means literally all
(not the majority as if it were the whole),
as the Taz11 explains –
Therefore, since "Your people are all righteous",
and the righteous are similar to their Creator,
and especially since they are called "Adam"12 meaning "I am similar to the Supernal One"13 –
it must be that with every Jew as well, similarly to the Most High,
each day performs its task,
that he must utilize all his powers in perfection for holy service.
And it is said that each day performs its task,
that it performs its particular task.
So too regarding the service of Jews,
that each Jew has his unique powers and his unique holy service.
In general, there is the concept of service for everyone,
"performs its task",
but in particular, each one has his unique "task".
As we see this regarding the Torah,
about which it is said, "He looked into the Torah and created the world"14:
It is stated in the writings of the Arizal15 that in every matter in the Torah there are sixty myriads
(six hundred thousand)
explanations according to the simple meaning,
sixty myriads explanations according to allusion,
sixty myriads explanations according to homiletic interpretation and sixty myriads explanations according to the secret. Corresponding to the sixty myriads of general souls of Israel,
each of which has a letter in the Torah,
for there are sixty myriads letters in the Torah
(the initials of "Israel")
16. And as also explained in the discourse of my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe, connected to Simchat Torah17. Therefore, there are sixty myriads explanations in the simple meaning, allusion, homiletic interpretation, and secret of the Torah,
each explanation corresponding to a general soul,
for each general soul has its unique service and its unique explanation and path in the study of Torah.
Since each of the sixty myriads of general souls has sixty myriads of particular souls,
as explained in Tanya18,
so too each of the sixty myriads explanations in the Torah
(in the simple meaning,
in allusion,
in homiletic interpretation and in secret)
has another sixty myriads of particular explanations,
corresponding to the particular souls.
And one can see in this a novelty:
Not only that the sixty myriad interpretations according to Remez,
according to Drush and according to Sod,
there are another sixty myriad interpretations –
it is understood that in the higher parts of the Torah
(Remez,
Drush and Sod)
there are a multitude of interpretations. And the main point –
one need not have proof for this,
because one sees it in actuality:
Even in this time,
when most souls are not from the sixty myriad general souls,
but rather from the particular souls,
each one delves into a matter in Torah
(in study according to Remez,
Drush or Sod)
in a different manner. Until he comprehends it in his intellect in a different manner,
that at the time he comprehends it he grasps it,
as explained in Tanya19,
and it is called by his name20.
So not only that in the sixty myriad interpretations according to Remez,
according to Drush and according to Sod there are another sixty myriad interpretations –
but also in the sixty myriad interpretations according to P'shat there are another sixty myriad interpretations!
All this is a parenthetical remark. And in any case –
let us assume even that in the sixty myriad interpretations according to P'shat there are not another sixty myriad interpretations corresponding to the sixty myriad particular souls
(which are included in the sixty myriad general souls) –
but one does not know to which general soul one belongs. Consequently, one must seek in all the modes of study and interpretations to which one has a connection;
ווייסט מען אבער ניט צו וועלכע נשמה כללית מ'געהערט. במילא דארף מען זוכן בכל אופני הלימוד והפירושים צו וועלכער מ'האט א שייכות;
in which his task stands,
his particular service.
And it is not sufficient for this that he helps another in his service
(of that other),
because each one has his task.
On the other hand:
In addition to this that he must seek his particular task –
he must also help another Jew in his service.
And this is like the general distinctions of service between service in the line of Yissachar and service in the line of Zevulun –
that in addition to what each one does his service, he must also help the other in his service:
The concept of "Zevulun" is "Zevulun, in your going out"21 –
the refinement of the sparks,
so in addition to his service,
he must also help Yissachar in his service,
through his "supporters of the Torah"22.
The concept of "Yissachar" is "Yissachar, in your tents"21,
the study of Torah. So in addition to his service,
he must also be a guide for "Zevulun, in your going out".
And regarding our matter –
coming from Shabbat Bereishit
(and one of the matters in Shabbat Parshat Noach is,
that it comes after Shabbat Bereishit,
as mentioned above),
then the main concept of "And Yaakov went on his way"23 begins.
On the other hand, however,
it says "And Yaakov went on his way",
where "Yaakov" and "went" and "on his way" are all singular language, meaning that all Jews,
and the service of each and every one, are all included in "And Yaakov went on his way" in the singular.
Here it does not say "the sons of Yaakov",
as it says elsewhere when speaking about each and every one of Israel,
rather each and every one of Israel is here called "Yaakov". They are all called by one name,
"Yaakov",
singular language
(not as Yaakov descends into division into sons, etc.).
And this is like "one day" of Ma'aseh Bereishit –
"that the Holy One, blessed be He, was alone in His world". And this is connected to every first day of the week,
as explained elsewhere that all first days are truly one thing, etc.
Which signifies the unity of all Israel,
"when the heads of the people gather together, the tribes of Israel together"24. Not only25 love of Israel,
"and you shall love your fellow as yourself"26,
which signifies –
after division,
until it is "as yourself" with a kaf of comparison –
but rather the unity of Israel. "And Yaakov went on his way" in the singular refers to each and every one of Israel and his particular service.
Until even in the sichot where it speaks about this
("And Yaakov went on his way")
one need not warn that this refers to the particular service of each and every one of Israel,
because Jews are to such an extent in union and unification
(with an aleph and with a yud),
that one need not warn about this at all,
it is simple by itself.
It is not only a state where all Jews are "one",
which signifies a connection of separate entities,
but rather –
from the outset beyond "unique",
from the outset one thing.
One sees here in "And Yaakov went on his way" both of the above extremes:
Each Jew must go "on his way",
to perform his particular service. Together with this he is one thing with all other Jews,
and consequently he must also help another Jew in his service.
And regarding the well-known story27 concerning the matter of stray souls
(with a taf-yud) –
which speaks not only about going on a path to fulfill one's mission,
"And Yaakov went on his way",
but also about going on a path of straying:
There was once a wealthy man with his wagon driver. Once they arrived in a city on Friday after midday. The wealthy man put on Shabbat clothes and went to the synagogue. While walking in the street he saw a large wagon stuck in the mud,
he must fulfill "you shall surely help him unload"28,
so he went over to help pull it out,
and he became soiled etc.
But the wagon driver was dressed properly etc.
That is, the wealthy man,
whose essence was to be a wealthy man and a Torah scholar,
his Shabbat clothes became soiled etc.,
by helping the wagon;
דנוך ארויסהעלפן דער עגלה;
but the wagon driver,
whose essence was to transport people or goods on the wagon,
was dressed in Shabbat clothes etc.
This was not a matter of stray souls,
a mistake
(with a tes), heaven forbid,
because the wealthy man had fulfilled a Torah commandment,
"you shall surely help him unload",
whatever the explanation of it may be;
ווי דער ביאור אין דעם זאל נאר זיין;
but from this we see that every Jew has his mission,
"do my work"
(and therefore there can be "stray" souls (with a taf-yud)).
And together with this we see from this that from Above it was arranged that specifically the wealthy man should see the wagon in the mud,
and therefore become soiled,
and not that the wagon driver should see it.
From this we also see,
that every Jew must also help another Jew in his own service,
because all Jews are one thing –
in complete unity.
As mentioned above,
in this Shabbat there are several aspects –
it is Shabbat,
and Shabbat of Parshat Noach,
and the Shabbat that comes after Shabbat Bereishit,
and that comes before the days of the Three Weeks,
and the 6th of Cheshvan;
און ו' חשון;
First and foremost comes the aspect that this is the day of Shabbat.
Because the day of Shabbat particularly emphasizes the matter of unity among Jews. To the extent that it states in the Yerushalmi Demai29,
that even an ignoramus does not lie on Shabbat,
and he is like a Torah scholar,
a fundamental chassid. To the extent that therefore one can rely on him regarding matters of eating and drinking
(as discussed at the farbrengen of last Shabbat30).
And since on Shabbat the matter of the unity of Israel is particularly emphasized,
therefore it is the most suitable time to hold a farbrengen,
because the essence of a farbrengen is also to unite Jews.
And according to the teaching of the Alter Rebbe31 that what a chassidic farbrengen can accomplish, the angel Michael, the great prince32, cannot accomplish,
because during a farbrengen one sees Jews standing in complete unity. This causes even more pleasure and satisfaction Above than what the angel Michael can accomplish. To the extent that this unity is higher than that which exists Above among the angels, where there is no jealousy among them33. Because Above among the angels, this must at least be negated,
which indicates a connection to it;
וואס דאס ווייזט אויף א שייכות דערצו;
but during a chassidic farbrengen, Jews are so united that there is no need at all to negate that there is no jealousy among them. They are literally one thing,
and regarding a single entity, jealousy is not applicable –
who would be jealous of whom?!
And particularly according to what is explained34 that Shabbat is higher than all worldly matters,
to the extent that "He said 'your festivals' and did not say 'your Shabbatot'"35.
Therefore on the day of Shabbat there is not as much emphasis on hospitality as on Yom Tov.
Hospitality is always a great thing,
but on the day of Shabbat there is seemingly no obligation for this from the day itself –
because "your Shabbatot" is not said,
but on Yom Tov the day itself obligates this36, and especially on Sukkot –
as emphasized in the matter of the ushpizin.
It is said seemingly,
because the holiness of Shabbat is "beneficial to me"37 in all matters of Shabbat,
that they are all on a higher level,
including also hospitality on Shabbat.
That is, just as Shabbat is inherently higher than weekdays,
so too hospitality on Shabbat is inherently higher than hospitality on weekdays.
And in addition there is the elevation of Shabbat,
that then the worlds receive their vitality from the aspect of thought,
as explained in many places38.
And it is known that the superiority of thought over speech,
that both are garments of the soul,
but thought is a garment that is unified and connected to the soul, unlike speech which is a separate garment.
Therefore, thought is for oneself,
unlike speech, where one needs another,
and on the contrary –
the entire matter of speech is only for the sake of another.
And therefore also –
speech has an interruption. One cannot speak,
simply by the power of speech,
without an interruption. And on the contrary –
there must be an interruption between one speech and another so that the matters spoken about may ascend and effect their effect upon the one to whom one speaks. And as it is stated regarding the giving of the Torah from the Holy One, blessed be He,
(in speech)
to Moshe Rabbeinu,
the chosen among creatures,
that He paused between one matter and another in order “to give Moshe space to contemplate between one section and another”39.
Unlike thought, which has no interruption. In thought one sees the aspect of eternity in the world
(which one does not see in any other thing)!
Because thought has no interruption. A person thinks constantly. There is only a difference whether one pays attention to it –
that sometimes he thinks about a certain matter and he knows that he is thinking about it,
and sometimes he thinks and at the moment does not know what he is thinking about,
it is in concealment,
and in the middle he catches himself as to what he is thinking about.
As one sees in practice –
not for Jews, heaven forbid –
sometimes someone stands in the Shemoneh Esrei,
at which time he must be “like a servant before his Master”40,
that even then he thinks,
and in the middle he catches himself,
what is he thinking about –
about mundane matters! As each person knows in his soul.
The opposite of the conduct of R. Binyamin Kletzker:
When R. Binyamin Kletzker made the accounts of his business,
his thought that he thought in his innermost being burst forth,
that there is none besides Him,
and he wrote that down as the total;
און ער האט דאס אנגעשריבן אלס דעם סך-הכל;
unlike here, where it is the opposite:
in the middle of the prayer of the Amidah, his thought about mundane matters bursts forth!
From this it is understood that thought has no interruption.
Even during sleep he thinks,
every person dreams while he sleeps.
There are those who speak in their sleep,
speak while sleeping –
but that is not everyone;
אבער דאס איז ניט יעדער איינער;
but everyone dreams during sleep.
There is only a difference whether he remembers his dream afterwards or not,
or from the outset he does not know at all that he dreams, and so forth.
Analogously to thought when he is awake,
there is the distinction of whether he knows what he is thinking about or not,
as above.
And this
(that thought has no interruption)
comes from the fact that thought is a garment that is connected and unified with the soul,
so just as the vitality of the soul has no interruption,
it is a constant matter –
there can only be a difference in the revelation of vitality,
whether it is revealed or it is in a state of fainting,
but vitality is always present –
so too is thought,
the garment that is connected and unified with the soul.
From this is understood the superiority of the day of Shabbos,
when all worlds,
including this physical world,
ascend to the level of thought.
Therefore, on the day of Shabbos it is the most suitable time to make a farbrengen. And especially in a “place where they magnify prayer” and “where they magnify Torah”41.
And especially after this time, after midday,
before the Minchah prayer,
when particularly then there is the aspect of “And as for me, may my prayer to You, Hashem, be a time of favor”42,
as explained in the Zohar43
(brought in several maamarim44),
that then the twenty-four courts of law are closed,
and on the contrary –
one overturns them.
And especially when one connects the farbrengen with the three pillars upon which the world stands,
Torah,
service, and acts of kindness45,
as it is possible to fulfill acts of kindness on the day of Shabbos –
by saying a good word to another and so forth,
by saying “L’chaim” or “L’chaim u’lvrachah” with a pleasant countenance.
And this has an additional advantage over charity which one can give on weekdays,
for then one must first give the charity in actuality,
in order to effect the “reviving the soul of the poor person”46,
and afterwards one must think about a pleasant countenance.
Unlike on Shabbos, where the very essence of the matter of acts of kindness is through showing a pleasant countenance and saying “L’chaim”,
“L’chaim u’lvrachah” and so forth.
And added to this is that this Shabbos is Shabbos Parshas Noach.
What this contributes to the matter of Noach, from the term rest,
rest for the supernal beings and rest for the lower beings47,
which Noach accomplished –
contentment in the supernal beings and contentment in the lower beings.
This is connected with the service of teshuvah,
that specifically through the service of teshuvah the matter of contentment is accomplished,
rest for the supernal beings and rest for the lower beings.
Everything we want to connect with the redemption
(through our righteous Moshiach).
So too in Parshas Noach there is a special matter connected with the redemption. In Parshas Noach we see how the matter of the redemption already existed in the world
(which one does not pay attention to):
It is explained in Chassidus,
and especially in the maamarim of the Rebbe Maharash48
(and also in Likkutei Torah on the parshiyos49),
that in Noach's ark there was something akin to the state of the world as it will be in the future.
There it was analogous to "the wolf shall dwell with the lamb, etc."50 which will be in the future,
because in the ark there were "all the living creatures" including also harmful animals, and they did not harm one another.
There is the matter of "the mother of children is joyful"51,
the aspect of Binah. And the matter of Sukkah,
"and spread over us the shelter of Your peace"52,
which is the externality of Binah. Then there is the ark of Noach,
which is connected with the internality of Binah,
which is connected with the internality of Atik etc.,
analogous to the revelation of the future53.
That also Sukkah is connected with an action in the world,
even an action upon the nations of the world,
as is known that on the festival of Sukkos they offered "seventy bulls corresponding to the seventy nations"54,
that if the nations of the world had known of this they would have protected the Holy Temple –
but this is all like the matter of "the wolf shall dwell with the lamb" in the allegory,
as it refers to the nations of the world
(not a literal wolf and lamb),
as the Rambam55 writes that "the wolf shall dwell with the lamb" is an allegory for the nations of the world.
And furthermore:
Even when they offered on Sukkos the "seventy bulls corresponding to the seventy nations",
it did not necessarily affect all the nations:
In the First Temple it affected all the nations,
therefore they brought tribute to Shlomo<sup>56</sup>;
וואס דערפאר הביאו מס לשלמה 56;
but in the Second Temple it was not so. And especially at the end of the Second Temple period,
when it was the opposite –
the Jews were under the dominion of the nations of the world.
However, in Noach's ark there was something akin to "the wolf shall dwell with the lamb" literally,
as Chassidus rules57 according to the opinion of the great ones of Israel58 that
(this is not merely an allegory, but)
so it will be in the future
(also)
literally, and as the Rambam also does not negate this in his Igeres Techiyas HaMeisim59.
It follows therefore that in Noach's ark there was something analogous to "the wolf shall dwell with the lamb" literally,
even according to the initial assumption of the Rambam.
Because according to all opinions, all kinds of harmful animals were in the ark, and nevertheless they did not harm one another.
And even though it is written60 "make compartments for the ark,
rooms within rooms for every beast and animal"61,
which separated one animal from another –
but the animals were in the ark for an entire year,
twelve months and another eleven days
(as Rashi explains62),
if they had been with their full force for so much time,
they would certainly have broken through the compartments,
and harmed one another. Since it was not so,
it proves that in the ark there was a supernatural state,
analogous to "the wolf shall dwell with the lamb" of the future.
And that which Rashi in his commentary on the Torah
(the plain meaning of Scripture)
does not warn the five-year-old about this wonder –
it is because the five-year-old understands it himself –
from that which Rashi already told him63 that the animals "...
came of their own accord,
and whatever the ark received, he brought into it."
That is, the animals that entered the ark were selected,
therefore it is understood why they did not harm one another.
And even though this state existed only in the ark,
not in the world,
whereas in the future it will be so throughout the entire world –
nevertheless, the continued existence of the world was dependent on this, that in the ark there should be Noach and his wife and his sons etc.,
and "all the living creatures",
so that afterwards they should go out from the ark into the world,
and restore the settlement of the world,
and that in the world there should be animals and beasts etc.
And therefore in the ark there was simply from "all the living,"
including also the smallest creeping things and flies,
even also a flea,
and a spider's web etc.,
about which the Gemara64
(and in the addition in the Midrash65)
says that even in these creatures there is a purpose,
because "the Holy One, blessed be He, did not create a single thing in His world in vain,"
not like David initially thought regarding a spider's web66.
It follows that in the ark there was a state of "and the wolf shall dwell with the lamb"
(as it will be in the future to come)
regarding all kinds of animals,
which would later be in the world and there fulfill the purpose of their creation.
And thus the state in the ark was not only for one day,
or a few days,
but for an entire year,
in which all seasons passed,
as the verse says67 "seed and harvest and cold and heat and summer and winter,"
each of which is two months
(as Rashi explains).
That is, that thus was the state in the ark
(which pertains to the entire world)
in all seasons and states of the year without change.
Since it is said that the state
(of "and the wolf shall dwell with the lamb")
as it will be in the future to come already existed for all time in the ark of Noach –
it gives strength to hasten even more that this matter should now come out in actuality in the future redemption.
And especially since it already existed for all time in this physical world,
and furthermore –
this physical world in a lowly state. Not like the world was before the known sin caused by Adam HaRishon,
when all worlds stood on a higher level,
as explained in the writings of the AriZal68,
but after the sin when there was a descent in all the worlds. So when it is said that it already existed for all time in such a world,
in the time of Noach,
it is understood that this gives strength that it should be so also now, very soon.
And analogous to what is stated in Tanya69 that the revelations of the future to come,
in the days of Moshiach and the resurrection of the dead,
"already existed for all time something similar at the time of the giving of the Torah." And the simple explanation of why he says it in Tanya is,
that because "already existed for all time something similar at the time of the giving of the Torah" it makes it easier now to bring about this matter70.
As the Gemara71 says,
"that which was not alive,
that which was alive, all the more so,"
that which was once so
("that which was")
gives strength that it should be easier for it to be so again.
And so regarding this, that the state of "and the wolf shall dwell with the lamb" of the future to come already existed for all time in the ark of Noach,
that this gives strength that it should be easier for it to be so now.
And especially since the ark of Noach was before the giving of the Torah,
and now is already after the giving of the Torah.
From this there is a lesson for every Jew from the portion of Noach:
The matter that is discussed in the portion of Noach, that in the ark there were from all kinds of living creatures and they did not harm one another,
which is similar to the state of "and the wolf shall dwell with the lamb" that will be in the future to come –
must give every Jew strength,
that he should know,
that the future redemption is not a matter for which one must split heavens,
because we see that it already existed for all time in the ark of Noach,
before the giving of the Torah,
when the world stood in a most lowly state,
there was a flood etc. –
all the more so that this can be so now!
That is, that in addition to what is discussed in the haftarah of the portion of Noach about "in a moment of wrath I forsook you, but with great mercy I will gather you, and with everlasting kindness I will have mercy on you, says your Redeemer, Hashem,
for this is like the waters of Noach to Me, for as I swore that the waters of Noach would no longer pass over the earth, so My kindness shall not depart from you, and My covenant of peace shall not be removed"72 –
it is also discussed in the portion itself regarding the ark of Noach,
where we see that the state that will be in the future to come already existed for all time in the ark of Noach.
This gives even more strength that the redemption should come as quickly as possible now.
And through whom was this matter brought about in the ark of Noach –
through one single person,
"a righteous man, perfect in his generations"73!
And through the fact that with him it was "come into the ark" as the Above told him,
and not only he himself "come into the ark"74,
but "and you shall come into the ark, you and your sons, and your wife, and your sons' wives with you"75,
also all the animals and beasts from the entire world,
both from the pure animals,
and even from the animals and beasts from the entire world,
both from the pure animals,
and even from the animal which is not pure76. And through this he established the world anew literally!
It is a certain thing,
that everyone,
standing after Matan Torah,
can accomplish this through "come into the ark",
that he enters into the words of Torah and prayer
(as the Baal Shem Tov interprets77),
and "a window shall you make for the ark"78 –
through the service of man
(and entering into the words of Torah and prayer)
one transforms from an undesirable combination into "tzohar" upon "tzohar",
so that it shines,
"a precious stone that gives light to them"
(as the interpretation of "tzohar"79),
Until –
that not only is it precious stones and pearls,
which shine for themselves inside
(in the ark),
but as the interpretation of "tzohar" –
"window",
so that it shines and also affects in the world,
and on the other hand,
one also brings the world into oneself. Like a window simply illuminates with the light from inside also the outside,
and it brings in what is outside inside;
און דאס ברענגט אריין וואס עס איז בחוץ אינעווייניק;
both from above to below,
and from below to above.
Until "and Noach opened the window of the ark"80 –
with which there is even more connection of the ark with the world,
and through this one affects even more in the world.
And all the more so and certainly that one can now accomplish this through the words of Torah and prayer –
the service of man.
And through this,
the totality of our deeds and service in the time of exile,
and especially through entry into the words of Torah and prayer –
a Jew hastens more to the future redemption,
and effects a change in the entire world,
until "and the wolf shall dwell with the lamb" literally,
and also that he affects the nations of the world
(as in the allegory),
it is understood simply that with the saying that "and the wolf shall dwell with the lamb" means literally,
Chassidus does not negate the interpretation that this refers to the nations of the world,
rather Chassidus adds to this that it also means literally,
and in general "two hundred maneh"81.
And "those who taste life have merited"82 –
already now one has a foretaste of this in the effect on the nations of the world in the entire world,
that "and kings shall be your foster fathers and their queens your nursing mothers"83.
One must, however, have the matter in its completeness and in actuality,
which is –
in the true and complete redemption,
when then will be the completeness of the effect on the nations of the world,
and on the beasts of the earth literally,
that "and the wolf shall dwell with the lamb" also literally.
And it will be "and the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of Hashem as the waters cover the sea"84,
which is connected in the maamarim with that which in the future to come will be "and the wolf shall dwell with the lamb".
Which is also the connection with the spreading of the wellsprings outward which brings "the king Messiah comes"85.
And this should be "now" literally,
also in a language that the nations of the world understand,
and speedily in our days literally –
in the Holy Tongue,
the language with which the world was created86.
And from this speech about this may it come out in actuality,
that very soon Jews will go out from exile,
and Moshiach our righteousness will lead Jews to the Holy Land,
"a land which Hashem your God looks after constantly, the eyes of Hashem your God are upon it from the beginning of the year to the end of the year"87,
and there itself in Jerusalem the holy city,
and there itself in the third Holy Temple,
"the Sanctuary, Hashem, Your hands established"88,
And with joy and a good heart.
In addition to the aforementioned matters on this Shabbos,
this Shabbos is also the sixth of Cheshvan
(in the determination of this year).
The special matter of the sixth of Cheshvan:
Regarding the 7th of Cheshvan stands the law89
(as already discussed90 in connection with making gatherings at the beginning of the month of Cheshvan),
that in Eretz Yisrael one begins to ask for rain "from the night of the 7th of Marcheshvan,
because it is a land of mountains and needs rain immediately after the festival,
and it would have been fitting to ask in it immediately after the festival, but they delayed the question fifteen days after the festival so that the last one in Israel who went up for the pilgrimage should reach his home at the Euphrates River, which is the most distant inhabited place from Jerusalem, and the rain should not detain him"91.
That is, since the falling of rain is connected not only with the entirety of Israel,
but also with every individual in Israel,
even if one Jew is still on the way one must ensure that there should not be rain that could hinder him in his journey.
And as the Gemara92 relates regarding Rabbi Chanina ben Dosa,
that "he was going on the road,
rain came,
he said before Him: Master of the Universe, the entire world is at ease and Chanina is in distress,
the rain stopped."
So too in our case:
Because on the 6th of Cheshvan there may still be a Jew who is on the road,
therefore we begin asking for rain only from the night of the 7th of Cheshvan.
From the fact that the asking for rain begins "from the night of the 7th of Marcheshvan" it is understood that the last of Israel who ascended for the pilgrimage arrived at his home on the 6th of Cheshvan. Because if the last of Israel arrived at his home on the 7th of Cheshvan,
then it would turn out that rain would begin to fall on that day
(the 7th of Cheshvan)
when he is still on the road,
since the asking for rain is on the night of the 7th,
and the asking for rain is done with a blessing and a seal in the blessing. And it is known what is stated in Tanya93 that when one makes a blessing it is a certainty that the request will be immediately fulfilled –
it comes out,
since we ask for rain on the night of the 7th,
then in the morning,
when the Jew is on the road,
rain will already be falling. And if the last of Israel is still on the road on the 7th of Cheshvan, we would hinder him in his journey through the asking for rain,
And to say that he is still on the road on the night of the 7th of Cheshvan,
one cannot,
because a Jew travels on the road by day and not by night,
as it is written94 "the morning is light and the men were sent" –
Thus it is proven from this that the last of Israel arrived at his home on the 6th of Cheshvan. And afterwards on the night of the 7th of Cheshvan we begin to ask for rain
(because then even the last of Israel has arrived at his home).
From this it is understood that the conclusion and completion of the pilgrimage
(when the last of Israel arrived at his home after the pilgrimage)
is on the 6th of Cheshvan. And as we interpret95 that until they returned to their homes
(the last of Israel)
after the pilgrimage "it was considered by them as if they were still in the Land of Israel occupied with the matters of the Festival". It comes out that the conclusion of this being occupied with the matters of the Festival is on the 6th of Cheshvan. And afterwards on the 7th of Cheshvan a second period begins,
of the service of the entire year.
And analogous to the "day of breaking the axe"96,
"the day they stopped cutting wood for the arrangement" in the Holy Temple.
And then they made a celebration for the conclusion of this period. Analogous to Simchas Torah,
where "they rejoice and make a festive meal for the conclusion of the Torah"97.
And afterwards on the day after the "day of breaking the axe",
in the morning,
a new order begins in the offering of the wood for the arrangement. Because "on the day He commanded"98,
the offering of the sacrifices is specifically by day,
not at night99,
which also includes the preparations for this,
the preparation of the wood for the arrangement.
From this one will understand the lesson for each and every one from the 6th of Cheshvan:
When the 6th of Cheshvan arrives,
which is then the conclusion and completion of the involvement in the matters of the Festival,
as was expressed in the time of the Temple,
that the last of Israel arrived at his home on the return from the pilgrimage –
every Jew must meditate upon this,
and "where a person's thought is, there he is"
(according to the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov100),
consequently every Jew is as if he is then concluding and completing the matters of the Festival.
And moreover –
so it was also in actual deed,
that a messenger of a mitzvah
(the one who ascended for the pilgrimage)
arrived at his home then. Indeed on the return path from his pilgrimage,
but this is the conclusion and completion of the matters of the Festival
(until then "it was considered by them as if they were still in the Land of Israel occupied with the matters of the Festival").
And since the last of Israel is a messenger of a mitzvah,
it connects the matter even more with all Jews.
What the practical lesson from this is, simply:
Standing on the 6th of Cheshvan one must further strengthen and confirm all the good resolutions that were accepted during the month of Tishrei,
because the 6th of Cheshvan is the conclusion and completion of the involvement in the matters of the Festival,
and "everything follows the final line and after the sealing"101,
and the conclusion of the matter is the "gatherer of all the camps"102 –
then everything that was from before is completed,
and if something was lacking, one can then still fill it until it is completed,
as is the simple explanation of "gatherer of all the camps".
On the 6th of Cheshvan one must meditate on every moment of the month of Tishrei,
whether one utilized the time properly and completely,
because every moment that is given to a Jew he must surely fill with doing then good deeds in the study of Torah and the fulfillment of the mitzvos.
And even though Jews have certainly completed their service in completeness during the month of Tishrei –
But when time passes and one comes to a higher level,
new matters in service come to which one becomes connected.
As is known, Tachanun is said specifically after the Amidah prayer103,
as discussed previously104.
And in addition to this, the 6th of Cheshvan is also the eve of the 7th of Cheshvan,
the eve of the new period into which every Jew enters,
coming from the month of Tishrei –
"And Jacob went on his way",
Therefore, on the 6th of Cheshvan one must also strengthen the good resolutions that were made in connection with the service throughout the entire year,
each one in his place and his individual service.
And in general –
the service in the campaigns,
Beginning –
Since we now come from Simchat Torah –
with the campaign that every Jew should receive a letter in one of the general Torah scrolls,
And also –
the campaign of Torah in its simple sense,
that one should simply increase in the study of Torah,
the revealed part and Chassidut,
and also cause this with another,
as it is written "And you shall teach them to your children –
these are the students"105,
And in a manner of Ahavat Yisrael. And this is accomplished through the matter of education,
one's own education and the education of another,
And from this it then descends into action –
in actual practice –
in Tefillin,
to which the entire Torah is compared106
(meaning all the commandments107)
to Tefillin108. Mezuzah,
Charity,
a house full of books –
"He will build and my wise ones",
Kashrut of eating and drinking,
Family purity,
and lighting candles of the holy Shabbat and Yom Tov.
Through lighting candles of the holy Shabbat and Yom Tov one simply illuminates the surroundings. So that even though "darkness covers the earth and thick darkness the nations"109,
one illuminates the world with candles of the holy Shabbat and Yom Tov.
And a little light repels much darkness,
and certainly much light,
and certainly when many Jewish women and girls light candles of the holy Shabbat and Yom Tov.
Until not only does one illuminate the darkness,
but one transforms the darkness into light.
Like the matter of lighting candles in its simple sense:
One takes a physical candle and a physical wick,
and lights it,
and through this the physical matter
(of the candle and wick)
is transformed into fire and light through the annihilation of the matter,
until it lights in the manner of "When you raise up the lamps"110,
"it rises of itself"111,
as it was in the Holy Temple.
And the lamps in the Holy Temple are connected with the Shabbat candle,
as it is stated in the Yalkut Shimoni112 "If you keep the candles of Shabbat, I will show you the candles of Zion".
And just as this is with the lighting of Shabbat candles,
so it is also with all the other commandments,
as it is written113 "A candle is a commandment and Torah is light".
In addition to the above,
that Shabbat is the 6th of Cheshvan,
it is also the eve of the 7th of Cheshvan,
on the night of the 7th of Cheshvan one begins asking for rain
(saying "And give dew and rain")
in the Land of Israel
(as above).
And in this there is a most elevated superiority,
and a novelty regarding the prayer for rain on Shemini Atzeret:
The matter of the descent of rain is a most elevated blessing,
"And I will give your rains in their time"114. As this is simply. And especially as the Ramban115 writes that "And I will give your rains in their time" includes in itself all blessings.
It is also known that in the descent of rain there is the superiority, that –
"You shall drink water from the rain of heaven"116,
which the One Above arranged in order that "all should lift their eyes heavenward"117.
And this is the difference between the Land of Israel and the land of Egypt:
In the Land of Israel it is "You shall drink water from the rain of heaven",
and therefore there "all lift their eyes heavenward",
there Divinity is more revealed,
as it is written "a land which... the eyes of Hashem your God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year"<sup>118</sup>;
כמ"ש "ארץ אשר גו' תמיד עיני ה' אלקיך בה מרשית השנה ועד אחרית שנה" 118;
but not so in Egypt, no rain falls,
rather the growth there comes from the Nile River,
"And you shall water with your foot...",
not from heaven.
And because rain is such a more elevated blessing,
therefore, from the prayer for rain on Shemini Atzeret they make a great storm and commotion:
They select a cantor without equal to lead the prayer;
מ'קלייבט אויס א חזן שאין כמותו ער זאל אנפירן מיט דער תפילה;
They recite special liturgical poems. And in this one sees a thing of novelty and wonder:
It is known that the Alter Rebbe did not insert into the text of prayer in his Siddur, in the Amidah prayer of Shabbat, Yom Tov, and the Three Festivals, any interruption within the prayer. However, when it comes to the prayer for rain in the Amidah of Mussaf of Shemini Atzeret
(and the prayer for dew on the seventh day of Passover),
the Alter Rebbe inserted piyyutim,
and many piyyutim in the prayer. And specifically in between the first three blessings,
where there must be even more caution regarding interruption,
and one may not even request one's needs there
(only in the middle blessings)
119 –
119 –
nevertheless, the Alter Rebbe inserted the piyyutim within the first three blessings.
From this one sees the greatness of the matter of the prayer for rain on Shemini Atzeret.
And in addition, they make an announcement during it,
and with saying Amen three times,
with a great storm and tumult.
And based on this
(that the prayer for rain is a most elevated matter)
it is understood why it is said specifically during the prayer of Shemini Atzeret –
because Shemini Atzeret is a most elevated day:
it is a "unique day",
and on it they offer "one bull, one ram" 120,
as explained in many places that on it "Israel and the King are alone together" 121. And Shemini Atzeret is from the term "fatness"
(as the Maggid interprets 122,
brought in many maamarim 123),
that is, fat and saturated with all matters, etc.
But when the seventh of Cheshvan arrives, one sees,
that on a weekday
(as it is in the fixed calendar of this year),
when one is occupied with weekday activities,
one finds oneself in the "field",
and one does not go out from the "field",
and in a regular weekday prayer –
one says "and give dew and rain",
and this brings the descent of rains!
From this is understood the greatest novelty regarding the seventh of Cheshvan:
that which for the prayer for rain one must reach a whole storm with a special prayer, etc.,
and that this should be specifically on Shemini Atzeret –
is accomplished on the seventh of Cheshvan through the recitation of "and give dew and rain" on a simple weekday in a regular prayer!
And even though the simple reason for this is,
because on Shemini Atzeret the prayer for rain was already said –
but the actual descent of rains comes specifically through the completion of the matter,
through the recitation of "and give dew and rain" on the seventh of Cheshvan
(when the actual rains begin to fall).
And this actual deed is not a secondary matter,
but on the contrary –
this is the main thing,
the deed is the main thing 124. –
And as explained in Tanya 125 that one may intend all the kavanot,
but if the actual deed is lacking,
he has nothing;
האט ער גארניט;
in contrast, if he has the actual deed,
even if he lacks certain intentions,
he has the main thing.
And as we see in many matters that the completion of the matter,
the "striking with a hammer" is a great matter. As the law is 126 that "anything that has a finishing act is liable for the striking with a hammer",
even though the entire vessel is already finished. Because specifically the "striking with a hammer" completes the matter.
And as this was also regarding the Most High at the creation of the world:
During the six days of creation the Most High created creations,
and afterwards, on the eve of Shabbat at twilight, He created "half" creations. The completion of creation was specifically through the "striking with a hammer" of the Most High –
"And God completed on the seventh day His work which He had made" 127. Because the Most High "Who knows His times and moments,
entered into it like the thread of a hair, and it appeared as if He finished on that day"
(as Rashi interprets 128),
which "thread of a hair" is on the sixth day and also on the seventh day
(since this is only a "thread of a hair").
From this there must be a lesson for each person in his service.
And a lesson for all Jews,
also for the Jews who are in the Diaspora
(even though they begin saying "and give dew and rain" sixty days after the equinox) –
as is known the statement of the Tzemach Tzedek 129 that every Jew must make Eretz Yisrael in his own place.
And the Tzemach Tzedek says this explicitly,
but the Alter Rebbe already alludes to this in Torah Or 130:
"Three are called 'land',
the Congregation of Israel, the Oral Torah, and the mitzvot,
and all are hinted at in one verse,
'Land, land, land, hear the word of Hashem' 131. And he explains that there is the concept of 'land' in the service of Israel,
the concept of why is it called 'land' (aretz) because it desired (ratzta) to do the will of its Master 132.
That the concept of "desiring to fulfill the will of the Owner" exists in every Jew,
because this is his true essence,
as the Rambam rules133 that every Jew truly wants to fulfill the will of Hashem,
and it makes no difference what he says or what he shouts or how he conducts himself in practice –
because his true essence is "Eretz Yisrael",
that he desires to fulfill the will of the Owner.
It follows that in every Jew there is the concept of "Eretz Yisrael" in his spiritual service. Consequently, that which on the 7th of Cheshvan one begins to pray for rain in Eretz Yisrael also relates to him in his service.
The lesson from this:
Standing in this Shabbat which immediately enters into the 7th of Cheshvan,
and knowing the aforementioned superiority of the 7th of Cheshvan,
that then, through a Jew's regular prayer on a simple weekday, the descent of rain is brought about,
which is a blessing and a most lofty effluence –
this must give additional strength and encouragement to each and every one to do his service throughout the year,
which the service of the year begins primarily from the 7th of Cheshvan
(when the new period of the foot festival begins).
And since we are standing in this Shabbat before the 7th of Cheshvan,
there must already now be good resolutions in this,
and also actual deed
(as much as is applicable on the day of Shabbat),
in addition to what will be at the gatherings on the 7th of Cheshvan itself.
And simply:
Good resolutions to actually fulfill an increase in the study of Torah and the fulfillment of mitzvos,
and especially in the mitzvah of tzedakah –
as it is stated in Iggeres HaKodesh134 "the essence of the service of Hashem in these times at the heels of Moshiach is the service of tzedakah", –
including also the matter of support for Torah –
that those who can should strengthen with money an institution of Torah or an institution that disseminates Torah.
And the lesson from this is taken,
as mentioned,
from the study of the 7th of Cheshvan. And according to the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov that from every thing that a Jew sees or hears,
he can derive a lesson in his service,
and since he can –
he must derive from it a lesson in his service,
and since he must –
he has certainly been given powers for this,
because "I do not ask... except according to their power"135,
and the lesson in service must be even more than according to the powers that are given to him,
for one who has one hundred wants two hundred, etc.136,
which is also the case from the nature of his body.
And the lesson and empowerment for this is even greater in this year,
when the 7th of Cheshvan comes immediately after Shabbat,
so that from Shabbat,
from which all days are blessed,
one goes directly into the 7th of Cheshvan,
and consequently one has thereby all the advantages that Shabbat possesses. And especially during the time of ratzon deratzon on Shabbat.
Regarding combing the beard on Shabbat,
and touching the hair,
and pulling out a hair on Shabbat –
one may not do this. As is known the special caution in this of Rabbi Akiva Eiger137. And in actual practice he does not do it,
and especially in public –
because he knows what is stated in the Shulchan Aruch138.
And through nullifying the "because of our sins",
the cause is automatically nullified,
the "we were exiled from our land"139,
and "one mitzvah brings another mitzvah"140,
until one fulfills the entire Torah and all the mitzvos with joy and a good heart.
And through the totality of our deeds and service in the time of exile, we hasten even more the true and complete redemption through Moshiach our righteousness.
And especially since we are standing in the month of Cheshvan,
about which it is stated in Yalkut Shimoni141 that in this month the dedication of the third Beis HaMikdash will take place.
May this be in this month itself –
at the beginning of the month,
in one hour and in one moment142,
better one hour earlier,
until better one moment earlier,
speedily in our days, literally,
with the true and complete redemption,
through Moshiach our righteousness.

do not pay attention to it;
זיינען ניט משים לב לזה;
but when one contemplates, one sees,
that the commentary is full of questions like a pomegranate.
And similarly in our portion,
we will place ourselves on chapter 7 verse 12:
"And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights." Rashi quotes from the verse the words "And the rain was upon the earth" and explains:
"And later143 it says 'And the flood was,'
but when He brought them down He brought them down with mercy,
if they would repent they would be rains of blessing" –
meaning because the flood "upon the earth" came because "the earth was corrupt"144,
therefore,
if they had repented,
the flood waters would have been rains of blessing –
"and when they did not repent they became a flood" and therefore afterwards it says "And the flood was."
One must understand:
A) As discussed several times,
also the opening statement in Rashi's commentary is precise,
all the words that Rashi quotes from the verse are relevant to his explanation,
and there is in them no deficiency or excess.
Therefore it is not understandable:
Why does Rashi quote in this opening statement also the words "upon the earth" –
the contradiction between the two verses is seemingly only in the words "And the rain was"
(here it says "rain" and "later" it says "flood");
(דא שטייט "גשם" און "להלן" שטייט "מבול");
should Rashi have quoted only the words "And the rain was"?
The question is even greater:
After the words "And the flood was" that appear "later",
it also says "
(forty days)
upon the earth".
Nevertheless,
Rashi brings down from "later" only the words "And the flood was" and not the words "upon the earth";
ברענגט רש"י אראפ פון "להלן" בלויז די ווערטער "ויהי המבול" און ניט די ווערטער "על הארץ";
and furthermore:
he does not even allude to the words by adding an "etc." This proves,
that the contradiction of our verse to "later" is only in the matter of "rain" and "flood",
because if Rashi had intended also the words "upon the earth",
but he suffices with bringing the words "And the rain was" and relies that when one looks "later",
one will see that it says there "upon the earth" –
he would have needed at least to add an "etc." –
So why does Rashi quote in this opening statement also the words "upon the earth"?
B) When there is a contradiction between two verses,
it is understandable
(even in the mind of a five-year-old studying Scripture)
that one must resolve the contradiction in the second verse,
where the contradiction occurs. While studying the first verse there is no difficulty at all,
it is contrary to reason to resolve the contradiction there,
before the contradiction arises.
Therefore in our case it is not understood:
Why does Rashi need to resolve the contradiction from "later",
right here in our verse?
C) On the other hand it is perplexing:
Why does Rashi need to ask the contradiction from the verse "And the flood was" that appears "later" –
when it already says many times in the preceding verses that the Most High is going to bring a flood?
And if Rashi had asked the contradiction in this way,
there would be no place for the previous question –
why does Rashi resolve here a contradiction from "later".
The perplexity in this is even greater:
The entire contradiction between the two verses –
"And the rain was" and "And the flood was" –
is specifically if the five-year-old remembers Rashi145 beforehand,
that the meaning of "flood" is "that destroyed everything, that confused everything etc." Because if he does not remember the explanation of "flood" –
then what is the contradiction of "rain" and "flood"? Perhaps they are the same. Only because he remembers that "flood" does not mean just rain
(or a great rain),
but a matter that consumes everything,
therefore the matter of "rain" contradicts the matter of the flood.
And since the entire contradiction is based on Rashi's commentary on the word "flood" beforehand –
it is most perplexing:
Why does Rashi ask the contradiction specifically from the verse "And the flood was" that appears "later"?!
D) From where does Rashi derive "if they would repent they would be rains of blessing" –
"blessing" who mentioned it?!
And on the contrary:
Since afterwards it became from this "
(And there was)
the flood",
it is more logical to say,
that these were such rains from which a flood could come;
אז דאס זיינען געווען אזעלכע גשמים פון וועלכע עס קען ווערן א מבול;
how can Rashi learn that "He brought them down" in a manner that they would be "rains of blessing"
(which is exactly the opposite of "flood"),
and not just ordinary rains?
Rashi says: "And when they did not repent, they were [destroyed] by the flood" –
that as soon as it was seen that they had not repented –
the rains of blessing were transformed into a flood –
Yet the verse states: "And the rain was upon the earth forty days etc.,"
meaning the rains continued for forty days?
Because the determination of whether they had repented or not was made in the very first days of that rain. A person cannot live in water,
at least not more than three days,
therefore,
by all opinions,
if someone falls into waters that have an end and three days pass, it is assumed that he is not alive
(specifically when it is waters that have no end, a doubt remains,
because it is possible that he emerged onto dry land,
but he was not seen,
since it is waters that have no end146).
And even though a five-year-old studying Scripture has not yet learned these laws,
this is something he sees and understands on his own.
Consequently,
as soon as the flood began and they did not repent
(and consequently the floodwaters did not become rains of blessing),
they all died
(at least within the first three days),
and there was no longer any possibility for repentance;
און עס איז שוין ניט געווען קיין אפשריות לתשובה;
so why does the verse say: "And the rain was etc. forty days etc."?
And in general:
How can it be said that there were rains of blessing for forty days –
such an abundance of rain is a matter of "they cannot stand etc. from an excess of good"<sup>147</sup>;
אזא ריבוי פון גשמים איז אן ענין פון "אינן יכולים לעמוד כו' ברוב טובה" 147;
and as we see empirically,
when rain falls continuously for more than three days,
it spoils the crops*147.
f) Then comes the "blunt" question –
which people pay absolutely no attention to –
neither the teachers,
nor even a five-year-old studying Scripture;
און אפילו ניט א בן חמש למקרא;
one must approach a Jew with a white beard to ask the question...:
Since the verse states: "And the rain was upon the earth forty days etc." –
why does the verse later say: "And the flood was forty days upon the earth"? Whichever way you look at it:
Either it was rains of blessing for forty days or a flood!
Because these are the same "forty days",
as is understood from the calculation Rashi makes later regarding the days of the flood,
where he mentions "forty days" only once148.
And as will be explained further.
Regarding the notes on the Zohar from [my] father –
he refers148 to the Zohar on our portion, page 68a –
where the dispute between Rabbi Yehuda and Rabbi Yitzchak is brought concerning what Noach did not pray for his generation –
whether this is to his credit
(as Rabbi Yehuda says:
"What could he have done?"),
or to his discredit
(as Rabbi Yitzchak says that "he should have sought mercy for them").
[My] father explains,
that "each one of them explains according to his aspect and level":
Rabbi Yehuda, who is of the aspect of Chessed,
therefore leans towards Noach's merit;
איז ער דערפאר מהפך בזכותו דנח;
and Rabbi Yitzchak, who is of the aspect of Gevurah, therefore leans towards his liability. And he says,
that this dispute between Rabbi Yehuda and Rabbi Yitzchak is analogous to the dispute regarding the word "in his generations"
(which is brought earlier in the Zohar149),
"some interpret it for discredit from the side of the attribute of Gevurah,
and some interpret it for praise from the side of the attribute of Chessed."
These two interpretations are also brought in Rashi's commentary on the Torah on the verse150 "in his generations" –
"Some of our Sages interpret it for praise etc. and some interpret it for discredit."
This is not understood
(as was discussed once151):
Since there is the possibility to interpret the matter for praise –
why should one interpret it "for discredit"? After all, the verse says152 "the animal which is not pure" in order not to use a "disparaging expression" regarding an animal153,
surely all the more so that one should not seek discredit for a person!
And especially according to Rashi on "These are the generations of Noach" –
"Since he mentioned him, let him mention him with praise" –
and as Rashi also explains regarding Avraham154 "And Avraham was old, well advanced in days":
"The memory of the righteous is for blessing, since he mentioned him, bless him."
The question is even stronger on the Zohar:
In the Zohar,
the inner dimension of the Torah,
matters are discussed as they are in their inwardness and their root –
surely one must emphasize how the matter is for praise.
One must also understand
(as is customary to be precise):
What is the lesson from this in the service of man.
And as will be explained further.
Here is the place to continue regarding the matter of Shabbat Parshat Noach,
which comes after Shabbat Bereishit,
and before Shabbat Parshat Lech Lecha. And specifically in this order –
Parshat Bereishit,
Parshat Noach and Parshat Lech Lecha.
And although Parshat Bereishit has a connection to Parshat Beracha
(the last portion in the Torah)
by virtue of "their end is embedded in their beginning and their beginning in their end"155 –
but firstly:
their end and beginning are not necessarily of the same matter and manner. And secondly:
even if one says that they are of the same matter and manner,
as the explanation is in Sefer Yetzirah regarding "their end is embedded in their beginning and their beginning in their end" –
still, one is the beginning and the other is the end.
However, in our case, we speak about the order at the beginning of the Torah –
Parshat Bereishit,
Parshat Noach and Parshat Lech Lecha.
The lesson in this:
Parshat Bereishit,
"In the beginning, G-d created the heavens and the earth,"
teaches a Jew that he first became a new existence,
and the entire world first became a new existence,
as the Baal Shem Tov says156 that "Who in His goodness renews each day, constantly, the work of creation"157 means not only each and every day,
but each and every moment the work of creation is brought into being anew.
In avodah this means:
When one learns Parshat Bereishit, one must know that a new year is now beginning,
and consequently one must then begin a new avodah,
not looking at what one did beforehand.
He comes to learn Chitas and to engage in the ten mivtzaim,
he can ostensibly argue that he is not relevant to this because he knows his past.
They tell him:
You have now just become a new existence,
and the entire world,
heavens and earth and all their hosts,
has just been created anew,
and they were created for your sake –
consequently a new order in avodah now begins,
and your past state is not relevant,
rather you must now act anew in these matters and in all matters of Torah and mitzvos.
The "clever one" comes to him and argues:
First of all, you must do teshuvah,
and not already go and engage in Torah and mitzvos,
as it says in Tanya158 –
the clever one also learns Tanya, after all –
that "it is impossible to begin to serve Hashem without first doing teshuvah for the past."
Oh, a new order is now beginning
("In the beginning, G-d created the heavens and the earth") –
argues the clever one:
On the contrary,
when a new order begins,
one must first of all do teshuvah,
and only then go and fulfill Torah and mitzvos!
They say to the clever one –
this is written in Tanya,
but regarding practical action, a Jew must look in the Shulchan Aruch.
Says the clever one –
Shulchan Aruch? Let us go look in the Shulchan Aruch.
And he opens the Alter Rebbe's Shulchan Aruch in Hilchos Talmud Torah159 and proves to the Jew that there it actually states that all Torah and mitzvos that a person does before he does teshuvah add strength to the opposite side!
Oh, it states there on the spot,
that nevertheless
(even though he has not yet done teshuvah)
he should occupy himself with Torah and mitzvos,
because surely he will do teshuvah and then he will extract the Torah and mitzvos from that place and elevate them to holiness?
The clever one has an answer for this as well,
for he is indeed an expert in his craft160:
Why should you go in a crooked order,
occupying yourself with Torah and mitzvos,
which will temporarily add strength to the opposite side,
and then you will do teshuvah and elevate them –
this is "I will sin and then return"161! Better go in the straight order –
first do teshuvah and then occupy yourself with Torah and mitzvos!
Oh, it is about fulfilling a time-bound mitzvah
(can one wait until he does teshuvah)?
Says the clever one:
Indeed a time-bound mitzvah –
but what will it help? At the time you fulfill the mitzvah, it will be located in the opposite place and give strength there!
Through this you will accomplish exactly the opposite of the intention!
By fulfilling the time-bound mitzvah before teshuvah –
argues the clever one –
you bring down the king and the prince himself into the opposite place162!
And the clever one has an even stronger proof from Tanya than from Hilchos Talmud Torah,
because in Hilchos Talmud Torah it states at least in the same place both things,
that all the commandments that a person does before he does teshuvah add strength to that place,
but immediately in the same place it states that nevertheless one must engage in commandments etc.;
אבער גלייך על אתר שטייט אז אעפ"כ דארף מען זיך עוסק זיין בתומ"צ וכו';
However, in Tanya it only states that it is impossible to begin to serve Hashem without first doing teshuvah on the past,
and only in another place in Tanya 163 does it state that one can do teshuvah and through teshuvah one brings about that "intentional sins become for him like merits" 164.
Consequently –
argues the clever one –
first of all, do teshuvah!
And how does a chassid do teshuvah? He must first learn Igeres HaTeshuvah. And simply learning Igeres HaTeshuvah is not the matter;
און ווי טוט א חסיד תשובה דארף ער פריער לערנען אגרת התשובה. און סתם לערנען אגה"ת איז ניט קיין ענין;
drinking "juice" in the morning and sitting down to learn Igeres HaTeshuvah is not the matter –
he must first go into the water,
and concentrate on the kavanos,
and afterwards he sits down to learn Igeres HaTeshuvah!
Afterwards he must learn Shaar HaTeshuvah of the Mitteler Rebbe. Afterwards Mitzvas HaTeshuvah of the Tzemach Tzedek.
And he is, after all, a chassid of the Nasi of our generation –
he must therefore learn the maamarim of the Nasi of our generation that speak about teshuvah.
And only afterwards will he actually do teshuvah.
Meanwhile, the clock is ticking and he needs to put on tefillin and recite Shema etc.,
and soon the time when he can do this will pass
(because he is busy doing teshuvah)?
The clever one answers:
You are above time! Were the Torah and commandments given in place and time? But he is, after all, connected with the service of teshuvah,
which is in one hour and one moment –
above time!
And the poor man waits for someone to give him charity,
and that there should be "the life of the poor man's soul"? The clever one says,
that so it was also by Nachum Ish Gam Zu 165,
and nevertheless he remained afterwards a Tanna –
so it can also be by him, and he will remain a "Tanna"!
In summary, what does the clever one want –
that he should do "teshuvah"! As long as he does not fulfill commandments in the meantime!
The clever one is, after all, an expert in his craft,
he already finds a way to hinder the other from fulfilling commandments.
First of all, do teshuvah –
the clever one tells him!
One tells him –
"In the beginning, G-d created the heavens and the earth":
The world was created anew,
and the Jew became a new entity,
and for him a new order in service begins now –
he need not think about the past,
but rather immediately fulfill the commandments that are now incumbent upon him.
He must indeed remember what was in the past,
because this is relevant to the accounting of the soul that he must make before the Shema of the bed –
but this is a separate matter.
The first thing that he must now do is –
fulfill a time-bound commandment.
The time comes to put on tefillin,
he must put on tefillin. If he wants to draw down mochin into Zeir Anpin –
the first thing is he must put on tefillin,
through which he subjugates the heart and the mind 166,
and mochin are drawn down into Zeir Anpin.
And so it is regarding all the commandments.
And so it is also regarding the dissemination of Judaism and the dissemination of the wellsprings. Helping another Jew in matters of Judaism,
he cannot postpone this for later,
because this is a time-bound matter. The other needs help immediately now. And if he will wait until he
(the one who needs the other's help)
does teshuvah,
the time may pass in the meantime and he will not find the other afterwards, etc.
And all these considerations,
that he is not yet ready for it,
and that first must be "Adorn yourself and afterwards adorn others" 167 –
his honor, our master, teacher, and Rebbe, the Rebbe, has already announced many times,
that now there must be a different order,
and every single one must immediately go out into the street and seek Jews who need help in matters of Judaism. And he brought regarding this 168 the letter of his father
(the Rebbe (the Rebbe Rashab) of blessed memory)
that now the service must be of "Snatch and eat, snatch and drink" 169 –
one must immediately grab every matter of Torah and commandments because there is no time to wait.
It must first be "Adorn yourself" and then "Adorn others" –
now is a time when both things come together.
For this is all the lesson from "In the beginning, Hashem created the heavens and the earth,"
that it is a new world and the Jew is a new person and he must begin a new order in divine service.
Then comes Parshat Noach:
Noach is connected with rest above and rest below 47,
rest of the spirit 170,
which in divine service in continuation of Parshat Bereishit emphasizes,
that the aforementioned new divine service
(which is learned from Parshat Bereishit)
must be with joy and a good heart
(rest).
And it is known the explanation of the Arizal on the verse 171 "Because you did not serve Hashem your G-d with joy and a good heart" 172. As the Alter Rebbe brings down in Tanya 173,
and explains that service with joy and a good heart is not just a matter,
but an essential matter in the service of Hashem. As is understood from the force of the language of the aforementioned verse and the continuation of the verse. And as the Rambam rules at the end of the Laws of Lulav,
that "the joy that a person rejoices in performing a mitzvah...
is a great service, etc."
And as we see in practice,
that when the service is with joy and a good heart, the service is in a more elevated manner.
Then comes Parshat Lech Lecha.
Which adds that it is not sufficient with the aforementioned new divine service
("Bereishit, etc.")
with joy and a good heart
("Noach"),
rather, at the time of action when one performs the service, one must have in mind that this must be a service that will bring about a journey
("Lech")
from level to level,
until a journey without end,
as explained in Chassidus 174 that a journey
("Lech")
in truth is a journey without end.
That is, that immediately at the time he performs the service, he must know that this service must also be a preparation for a more elevated ascent afterwards.
For the clever one can come to him and say thus:
True, perform the service today in a new manner,
but why must you think today about the service you will do tomorrow? The Baal Shem Tov says that creation is renewed every single moment –
tomorrow will be a new world and new matters,
so what do you have to think about tomorrow now?
Parshat Lech says –
No! Already now one must think about "Lech",
that one should afterwards be elevated in service,
until an elevation without end.
And all these three details in divine service that are taken from the three portions "Bereishit",
"Noach" and "Lech",
are also included one within the other:
Parshat Bereishit is its subject "In the beginning, Hashem created the heavens and the earth",
a new creation and a new order in divine service.
And this includes within itself the subject of "Noach",
rest above and rest below –
for at the conclusion and completion of creation and new beginning it is written 175 "And Hashem saw all that He had made, and behold, it was very good." And "very good" is the subject of rest above and rest below. And at the conclusion of Parshat Bereishit it indeed speaks about Noach.
And this also includes within itself "Lech" –
as emphasized in the creation of the third day,
that "Let the earth sprout vegetation, herb yielding seed, fruit tree making fruit according to its kind, whose seed is in it, upon the earth" 176,
which is the subject of procreation and journey without end.
As explained in Iggeret HaKodesh 177 that this power without end the Almighty gave specifically to the earth,
in the matter of growth,
"Let the earth sprout vegetation, etc." And similarly in Parshat Bereishit it speaks about the command to man "Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth" 178,
which is the power without end of procreation in the human species –
the true subject of "Lech",
a journey without end.
"Noach" is its subject rest above and rest below,
the service with joy and a good heart. And this also includes within itself "Bereishit",
a new creation –
for after the flood it was "He saw a new world" 179 in the simple sense of matters,
that the settlement of the world began anew after the flood. And this also includes within itself "Lech" –
for after the flood, Noach and all the animals of the earth received anew the command "And be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth" 180.
"Lech" is the subject of journey. And in this is also included "In the beginning, Hashem created the heavens and the earth",
a new creation and a new divine service. For with Avraham it was not "Go forth from your land, etc." that he should be elevated to a level above the world,
rather "Go forth from your land, etc. to the land that I will show you" –
he should go to a "new world",
to a new land,
"the land that I will show you".
As is known, the explanation in Chassidus181 of "Lech Lecha from your land, from your birthplace, and from your father's house"
is that he should go away from his desires and from his habits, etc.
But not to be elevated above the world,
rather after "Lech Lecha from your land, etc." he goes "to the land that I will show you" –
to a new manner of service.
And in this is also included "Noach",
rest,
delight. Because,
obviously,
at the time that the Most High commanded Avraham "Lech Lecha from your land, etc. to the land that I will show you",
the service for him was with delight.
According to the above,
just as all three portions
(Bereishis,
Noach and Lech) –
for three is a matter of chazakah and permanence –
are included one within the other –
the general lesson in the service of man mentioned above from the three portions is further sweetened,
as they come specifically in this order,
Bereishis, Noach and Lech,
in sequence one after the other –
that the service must be in a new manner,
and with joy and a good heart,
and in a manner that from this should emerge a walk in the service of the Master of the Universe.
And since these are the first portions in the Torah –
it is understood that the lesson is a general lesson for the entire year,
at every single moment of the year.
And may it be His will that through the totality of our deeds and our service during the time of exile in the aforementioned manner,
we should hasten even more that Jews should go out from exile,
and Moshiach should lead every Jew and all Jews,
and with joy and a good heart
("Noach"),
in our holy land,
"Lech Lecha, etc. to the land that I will show you". As is known what is stated in several maamarim182,
also in the maamarim of our Rebbe the Maharash183 in connection with "Lech Lecha",
that double letters are connected with the redemption184,
And "Lech Lecha" has double letters,
two elongated chafs
(because "Lech Lecha" are two words,
each word ending with an elongated chaf).
And "Those who taste life merit" –
we already have now "the land that I will show you" in spiritual service,
But primarily we need to have this in actuality, physically –
that we go to the Land of Israel,
"the land that I will show you",
in the true and complete redemption through Moshiach our righteousness.
Regarding the explanation on Rashi –
we will begin from the aforementioned "blunt" question:
If the matter of "And the rain was" –
rain of blessing –
depends on "if they will repent",
why does the verse say "And the rain was, etc. forty days",
that the rain went on for forty days,
when the possibility for repentance was only at the beginning of the forty days?
A child of five years of age studying Scripture does not need to be warned about this question,
because he remembers what he learned earlier in Rashi's commentary:
On the verse185 "I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days, etc." Rashi explains:
"Forty days –
corresponding to the formation of the fetus, which they corrupted, to trouble their Creator to form, etc."
From this it is understood,
that the fact that the rain went on for forty days is not the simple meaning that each day is a separate punishment,
rather they all come at once –
it is one "package" of forty days
(analogous to the formation of one fetus),
they are one continuum. Or in the language of the Rogatchover:
one point.
Based on this it is understood,
that it is not possible to say,
that one day of the forty days will be in one manner and another day of the forty days in a different manner,
because since all forty days are one point,
there cannot be any division in it
(of beginning, middle and end).
And this is the simple meaning in Rashi "When He brought them down, He brought them down with mercy: if they would repent, they would be rains of blessing, and when they did not repent, they became for the flood":
The verse says "And the rain was, etc. forty days, etc." –
because "when He brought them down" this was in a manner
that "if they would repent" it would be forty days of rains of blessing;
אז "אם יחזרו" וועט זיין ארבעים יום פון גשמי ברכה;
But when it became clear that "they did not repent"
(which became clear immediately at its beginning)
the forty days were a matter of "And the flood was".
The reason why Rashi adds
(rains of)
blessing –
is also understood from what we learned earlier:
We learned in chapter Bereishis "And every shrub of the field, etc. before it grew, because Hashem had not caused it to rain, etc., and there was no man to work the ground". What is the connection between these two matters
("Hashem had not caused it to rain" and "there was no man to work the ground")?
Seemingly:
Rain can accomplish its effect in the world even when there is no person who recognizes its benefit. As we see,
that rain causes growth even when there is no person present who sees it.
Rashi explains simply:
"And what is the reason that it did not rain? Because there was no man to work the ground and no one recognized the benefit of rain, and when man came and knew that they are necessary for the world, he prayed for them and they descended and vegetation grew, etc."
From this we understand,
that the entire concept of rain is –
rains of blessing;
גשמי ברכה;
i.e., rain that comes because of "man to work the ground." In other words:
Ordinary rain is rains of blessing.
And one cannot ask:
If ordinary rain is rains of blessing –
why does Rashi need to say this in his commentary here? This is, after all, the simple content of rain.
This is not a difficulty,
because this is the nature of Rashi's commentary,
which comes to clarify the explanation of the verses,
as we find in many places that he adds a word or several words to clarify the explanation of the verse.
And so in our matter:
It could be that the five-year-old student of Scripture will not remember all the aforementioned details regarding rain,
therefore Rashi adds one word
("blessing")
which reminds the five-year-old,
that the concept of rain is a concept of blessing.
Regarding what Rashi says "and later it says 'and the flood was'" –
seemingly: (a)
Why does Rashi need here
to resolve a contradiction from "later," and (b)
why does he not ask the contradiction from the earlier verses –
one question answers the other:
The question that Rashi sees in the verse is indeed the contradiction from the earlier verses where it is mentioned several times that there will be a flood. And that which Rashi says "and later it says 'and the flood was'" –
he means thereby to further strengthen the question:
Not only did the Omnipresent say that a flood would come
(and in practice only rain occurred),
or even more:
It was indeed initially a flood,
but afterwards they repented,
or Noach prayed to the Holy One, blessed be He
(and prayer can change things,
as the five-year-old student of Scripture knows that prayer can help),
and consequently it became rain –
Rashi cautions that one cannot say so,
because "later it says 'and the flood was'":
If afterwards we find that in practice it was
(not rain, but)
a flood. It turns out,
that earlier there was a flood,
afterwards there was a flood,
and in between there was rain!
On this Rashi explains "He brought them down with mercy, if they would repent, etc." –
that in between the Omnipresent gave them the possibility to repent.
Accordingly, one will also understand why Rashi quotes in this discourse beginning also the words "upon the earth":
If in the verse it had only said "and the rain was,"
a sharp student could say,
that that which it says "and the rain was" is because as it comes from the Omnipresent it is only a concept of rain,
only when it came below,
"upon the earth,"
did it become a concept of flood. Because since the entire concept of the flood is a concept that came from the side of man's deed,
therefore,
it became "upon the earth."
Therefore Rashi also quotes the words "and the rain was upon the earth" –
that that which it was "rain" is not only because from the mouth of the Most High evil does not issue,
but the rain was also in practice "upon the earth."
Based on this, all the aforementioned precise points are resolved,
along with additional precise points;
מיט נאך דיוקים;
only the first aforementioned question remains –
Why did no one grasp this until today? It does not matter if another will answer the question...
I am not obligated to answer all questions...
The explanation in the Zohar:
It was already discussed at length once 151
(and now we will only repeat the point) –
and with an introduction:
Seemingly,
how is it said that one may not use a derogatory expression,
and we learn this 153 from that which the verse says 152 "the animal which is not pure"
(and not "the impure animal") –
yet we find many times in the Torah that the word "impure" is explicitly stated?
The answer to this is,
that there is a difference whether one speaks in a narrative style,
or –
in a halachah:
When one states a halachah –
one must say it in a clear style,
so that one knows clearly how one must conduct oneself,
even though one need not use a pleasant word in doing so;
אע"פ וואס מען דארף דערביי נוצן ניט קיין געשמאקער ווארט;
But when it is about a story –
then one must be careful not to use coarse language.
And even though the stories in the Torah are also a lesson –
nevertheless, since the lesson was stated
(not in a revealed manner,
in a style of instruction, but)
in a manner that one must extract the lesson from it,
it is sufficient when the content of the matter is stated,
and consequently one must use clean language
(even though it is not such a clear language).
And furthermore:
Through the very fact that one uses clean language, one thereby teaches an additional lesson –
that “a person should always speak in clean language”153.
And this is also the explanation in our case –
that some of our Sages interpret it for his disgrace. Because the matter,
that with Noach there was not perfection of service,
is a lesson that is relevant in practice
(as will be explained)
and therefore there is no difference in this,
whether it is for praise or for disgrace.
One must state it explicitly.
All this is an explanation in Rashi’s commentary.
But one must understand in the Zohar,
which is the inner dimension of the Torah,
and there the inner dimension of all matters is revealed –
how can one say,
that from the perspective of the inner dimension of Noach this is a matter of disgrace?
One must say,
that the “disgrace” of Noach is itself a matter of praise.
And the explanation of this is:
Through the very fact that Rabbi Yitzchak says that what Noach did not pray for his generation is to his disgrace,
“he should have sought mercy for them” –
he thereby rectifies the deficiency of Noach
(that he did not pray for his generation),
by this teaching every Jew a practical halachah,
that when someone conducts himself in this manner as Noach conducted himself,
that he did not pray for his generation – it is
(not a praise, but)
a disgrace,
and one must not conduct oneself thus.
And regarding the matter of “a sinner who causes the many to sin”186 –
not said about Noach –
that even if the sinner who caused the many to sin has repented,
it helps only regarding himself,
but in relation to that which he caused the many to sin,
that they continue in the conduct in an improper manner because of him –
his repentance will not help;
וועט זיין תשובה ניט העלפן;
the only way he can rectify this,
is by informing all of them that the previous manner of conduct was improper,
and this effects upon them to change their conduct187.
And regarding “that which is 188 warped 189 cannot be repaired, this refers to one who had relations with a married woman and fathered etc.”,
no repentance helps for this,
because the existence of the child in the world exists190. And the only advice for this is,
as the Mitteler Rebbe writes191,
that he should perform such a high repentance until this
effects that the warped existence in the world is nullified.
And so too in our case:
Since Noach did not pray for his generation,
an undesirable matter could result from this, that others should learn from it and also conduct themselves thus. Therefore the only advice to rectify this is,
that one should make known that this was an improper conduct,
to his disgrace,
and through this all will know that one should not conduct oneself thus, but rather conduct oneself in the opposite manner.
It follows that the very fact that Rabbi Yitzchak says that this is to his disgrace is
(the inner dimension in this) –
the praise of Noach. And Noach himself wants that one should say that this is to his disgrace,
because this rectifies his former conduct. If one does not say that this is to his disgrace –
then it indeed becomes to his disgrace!
[As in the example that was once discussed192 regarding Moshe and Aharon and the manner of their service,
that close to his passing Moshe heard the superiority in the service of Aharon. Therefore it is brought specifically in the verses that speak about the death of Moshe,
the superiority of the service of Aharon relative to the service of Moshe,
because Moshe desires that one should also perform the service of Aharon –
and through this the elevation of Moshe is achieved].
And the explanation of the statement of Rabbi Yehudah that what Noach did not pray for his generation is to his praise, and the statement of Rabbi Yitzchak that this is to his disgrace –
that these and those are the words of the living G-d193:
Rabbi Yehudah indeed says that the fact that Noah did not pray for his generation is to his credit,
because "Moses
(who prayed for the people of his generation)
did not attribute a word to his own merit but to the merit of the early forefathers,
but Noah did not have anyone in whose merit to attribute as Moses did",
and he did not rely on his own merit that it would help the people of his generation. So what could he do? "What was there for him to do?"
(in the language of the Zohar).
But Rabbi Yitzchak comes and says:
"Nevertheless, since
the Holy One, blessed be He, said to him 'And I will establish My covenant with you,'
he should have asked for mercy for them":
After all, Noah should have prayed for the people of his generation,
and striven to save them, perhaps in his own merit,
because there was no other alternative.
And since he did not do it,
it remains a matter of disgrace,
because others can learn from it. Therefore, one must say that it is to his discredit –
and so Noah himself wants –
because through this the rectification of Noah is achieved,
for everyone learns from it a practical halachah of how one should not conduct oneself and how one should conduct oneself.
From this is also understood the explanation of that which "some of our Sages interpret him
("for his generations")
to his discredit",
as Rashi brings down and as it states earlier in the Zohar,
that specifically in his lowly generation he was a righteous person, unlike in other generations where he would not have been a righteous person. As there are various expressions regarding this:
"If he had been in the generation of Abraham, he would not have been considered anything",
"If he had been in the generation of Moses or in the generation of Samuel",
or "in other generations".
So since this is a matter pertaining to practical halachah,
in order to provide a lesson to Jews of what the proper manner of conduct should be
(not like Noah who did not pray for the people of his generation),
therefore one must interpret it to his discredit.
And all the more so that thus it must stand in the Zohar,
the inner dimension of the Torah,
where the inner essence of every matter is revealed as it is in its root and source –
Rabbi Yitzchak says that the fact that Noah did not pray for the people of his generation was his disgrace,
because this is
(in the inner dimension)
actually the praise of Noah,
and through this his rectification is achieved,
as above.
Incidentally:
The source of this commentary of Rashi which was explained earlier
("And the rain was upon the earth –
and later it says 'And the flood was,' etc.")
is from the Zohar Chadash
(as later authorities note).
One seeks a source for this in
Midrash,
but in practice one finds the source only in the Zohar Chadash.
From this too one sees how Rashi in his commentary on the Torah is connected with the inner dimension of the Torah. As the well-known saying of our holy Rebbes that in Rashi there is "the wine of the Torah."
This is an additional answer to those who argue:
How can one say that in Rashi there is the inner dimension of the Torah, etc. –
one sees this from the aforementioned Rashi,
whose source is specifically in the Zohar Chadash.
And in addition to this –
it is generally known that Rashi was connected with several miracles and wonders,
beginning from the birth of Rashi,
which was connected with miracles.
And as his holiness, my master, father-in-law, the Rebbe, related,
that when he was in Worms
(the city where Rashi was born),
they showed him in a small alley a recessed place in the wall on the side of the alley. And they told him that this recessed place came about because when the mother of Rashi was pregnant with him,
she once went into that alley. The alley was very narrow,
and a wagon could barely pass through there. And while the mother of Rashi was walking there, a wagon passed by there,
and according to nature there was no space for the wagon to pass through and for the mother of Rashi to remain unharmed,
especially since she was still pregnant. When she saw the wagon she wanted to protect the fetus,
she pressed herself against the wall. A miracle occurred and in the wall on the side of the alley a recessed place was made such that she and the fetus fit into it,
and the wagon passed through and the mother of Rashi and the fetus remained untouched. And the recessed place that was shown to his holiness, my master, father-in-law, the Rebbe, was precisely this recessed place that was made through the miracle!
From this one sees how even before the birth of Rashi there were miracles connected with him. So too
The miracles that occurred in connection with his birth are known.
And certainly thereafter.
And certainly at the time when one learns Rashi –
one sees in actuality,
that each time new wondrous matters come,
also matters in the inner dimension of the Torah,
"the wine of the Torah."
The lesson for every person from this explanation in the Zohar:
One can perform his service with himself in perfection,
and he has testimony that he has done it in perfection –
he may think that he does not need to do more,
and he also does not need to go out to help other Jews in their service.
This teaches him what is stated in the Zohar,
that even though Rabbi Yehudah says that Noah did not need to pray on behalf of the people of his generation –
Rabbi Yitzchak comes and says that he nevertheless needed to pray,
and that which he did not do so is to his discredit –
It is not enough that one should save himself,
rather one must also go out to help other Jews.
At the time when one sees evil,
indeed there must be "turn away from evil,"
first and foremost one must flee from it. As His Holy Honor, my teacher and father-in-law, the Rebbe says,
that when it comes to turning away from evil one does not make any calculations and one flees,
whether it is for its own sake,
whether it is not for its own sake,
with this intention,
with that intention –
one must flee –
But together with this that one flees into the "ark,"
one enters into the words of Torah and prayer,
one may not be satisfied with this,
rather one must also pray on behalf of the people of the generation.
So too in one's own service:
One may study a topic in Torah one hundred times until "one hundred times and one"
(or one hundred times and one),
he may nevertheless think that he has attained the highest perfection,
and he does not need to do anything more,
And especially according to what is explained in Likkutei Torah that one who reviews
his chapter one hundred times is connected with Samech Mem
(numerical value one hundred).
And one hundred times and one is connected with the level of new and not in number.
One is told that the perfection at which he stands is not sufficient,
rather he must elevate himself even higher. As we learn from Noah,
that that which he stopped at himself and did not pray on behalf of the people of his generation,
is to his discredit.
And this is also connected with the lesson of "go,"
that there must be the matter of going,
until going from strength to strength.
Until he arrives at "the land that I will show you." Until "and I will make your name great" –
that in addition to that which "your name" itself is a great matter,
it becomes "and I will make your name great,"
a Hei is added to "Avram" and it becomes "Avraham,"
"for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations."
That the matter of "father of a multitude of nations" is connected with this that every Jew must endeavor to influence the nations of the world that they should fulfill their seven commandments of the children of Noah,
as the Rambam rules,
as discussed many times.
And one must not be influenced by those who ask questions about this.
(Missing).
One only wishes to speak about matters of good that is seen and revealed –
The question is known:
Repentance is a commandment from the Torah. That every commandment from the Torah is eternal,
and consequently it will also be in the future.
As is known the principle of the Rambam that in his Book of Commandments he counts only the commandments that will also be in the future.
And even though the commandment of repentance
(abandonment of sin)
the Rambam does not count in the count of the commandments – the reason is: (A)
the Tzemach Tzedek writes –
writes in his Book of Commandments that also according to the view of the Rambam and the Semag, repentance
(abandonment of sin)
is a commandment from the Torah
(as the Alter Rebbe writes in Iggeret HaTeshuvah). (B)
The commandment of verbal confession of repentance the Rambam does count in the count of the commandments.
The question arises:
What will be the commandment of repentance in the future?
And regarding this, what was the commandment of repentance before the known sin?
The explanation of this is –
that then there will be the repentance of "and the spirit shall return to God who gave it."
But of course,
that the repentance of "and the spirit shall return to God who gave it" comes after repentance in its simple sense,
for one who needs repentance in its simple sense.
(Missing).
And we have nothing except the words of our leaders,
that "we are daytime workers" –
our work is to illuminate the world with Judaism and with spreading the wellsprings outward.
And one must know:
The teaching of the Baal Shem Tov is alive and enduring and eternal until this day and until the end of all generations,
just like the Ten Commandments!
Just as the Ten Commandments will not be replaced –
so too the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov will not be replaced! Just as the Ten Commandments are eternal –
so too the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov is eternal!
The teaching of the Baal Shem Tov –
includes also how it was revealed through the teachings of Chassidus Chabad by all our Rabbis and leaders,
until the holy and pure master, our teacher and Rebbe, the leader of our generation!
And through "May your springs spread forth"
(from the Baal Shem Tov)
outwardly,
then King Moshiach will come,
as the Baal Shem Tov writes in his well-known letter that Moshiach told him when the Baal Shem Tov was with him in his palace,
that also the Torah of the Baal Shem Tov will not be replaced
(exactly like the entirety of the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov).
And this is our matter –
to disseminate Torah and commandments and the springs until the outside.
Until that through this we will bring King Moshiach,
very soon.
He commanded to play the melody "Melchatchila Ariber."
The "wine of Torah" in the commentary of Rashi:
It is stated in Yalkut Shimoni the reason why the month of Marcheshvan is called by the name "Yerach Bul":
"What is 'in the month of Bul,'
in the month that the earth produces clumps of vegetation. Another explanation: what is 'in the month of Bul,'
in the month of the flood, lacking a mem,
corresponding to the forty days
(of the descent of the flood,
whose beginning was in the month of Cheshvan),
that even though the Holy One, blessed be He, swore that 'this is for Me like the waters of Noach,'
nevertheless, forty days each year the
waters made an impression in the world,
until Shlomo arose and built the Holy Temple and the forty days ceased. Therefore it is written lacking a mem
("Bul,"
not "Mabul")
corresponding to the forty days that ceased."
And not only did the forty days cease,
but rather it was transformed into "the earth produces clumps of vegetation"
(as the first explanation in Yalkut),
as Rashi explains on the verse "in the month of Bul –
it is Marcheshvan, when the grass withers in the field, etc."
That is, that the earth still had benefit and blessing for good in this month
(the opposite of the waters of the flood).
Based on this, it is also understandable
(in the inner aspect of the matters)
in our Rashi commentary "And the rain was upon the earth,
and later it says 'and the flood was,'
rather, when He brought them down, He brought them down with mercy,
if they would repent, they would be rains of blessing, and when they did not repent, they became a flood" –
so since "He brought them down with mercy," they remained forever, in their inner essence, rains of blessing. Because even at the time of "they became a flood," they were in their inner essence rains of blessing,
and this was revealed afterwards in the time of Shlomo, that the "flood" itself became rains of blessing –
until Shlomo arose and built the Holy Temple, the forty days ceased,
and from "Mabul"
(with a mem)
became "Bul"
(without a mem).
That is, not that the entire word
(and the entire reality)
of the flood ceased to exist,
but rather from the "Mabul" itself, the mem was removed,
and "Bul" remained,
the aspect of rains of blessing that is in the flood,
"the earth produces clumps of vegetation,"
a matter of benefit and blessing in the earth.
Moreover –
also the letter mem of "Mabul" will be revealed and transformed
(in the future to come)
to good and holiness in a most elevated manner.
For also the letter mem is a letter in the holy tongue,
with which the world was created. And especially regarding the letter mem, it is stated in the Zohar that the world should have been created with the letter mem,
"The letter mem entered and said before Him: Master of the world,
may it be favorable before You to create the world with me, through whom 'King' is called
(and the acronym of 'King' is a mem)
etc."
So the explanation in this is:
It is explained in the discourses that speak about the ark of Noach that it was similar to the future to come
(as discussed above),
that the ark of Noach
(which was square)
is analogous to a closed mem,
which is a square
("ם"),
("ם"),
and the ark of Noach
(in the manner of a closed mem)
effected in all levels and matters,
in "lower, second, and third stories, etc.,"
as explained in the discourses in Likkutei Torah for the portions,
because there it was similar to the future to come,
when there will be the revelation of the closed mem,
"for the increase of the dominion."
And it is explained that the time of exile is connected with an open mem,
"in the walls of Jerusalem which are breached, etc.,"
it stands at the end of the word
("they")
an open mem,
because during the time of exile there is a breach, etc.;
ווייל בזמן הגלות איז דא א פריצה כו';
and the future redemption is connected with a closed mem,
"to increase the authority,"
a closed mem in the middle of the word. And the task of the redemption will be that instead of the open mem of exile,
it will become "to increase the authority,"
the closed mem
(which refers to the redemption).
And likewise it can be explained also regarding the mem of "Mabul,"
in addition to that which during the time of Solomon the rains of blessing were revealed in the flood,
the "bul" of "Mabul" –
that the mem of "Mabul,"
which is an open mem,
will become a closed mem in the future redemption.
For this is also connected with the sign of the covenant that the Almighty gave after the flood,
"I have set My bow in the cloud, etc.,"
which is indeed connected with the statement of the Zohar
(and as discussed earlier)
that "do not wait for the feet of Mashiach until this bow is seen in the world adorned with bright colors."
And as discussed earlier, this is the matter that through the flood a refinement occurred in the world,
and consequently one can refine and transform the cloud so that there should be in the world a bow "with bright colors,"
with shining colors.
From this one also sees how from the flood there subsequently emerges the matter of the bow which is connected with the future redemption
(when the mem of "Mabul" becomes a closed mem).
And may it be His will that very soon there should come "the feet of Mashiach,"
that "do not wait for the feet of Mashiach until this bow is seen in the world adorned with bright colors."
For the term "titzpi" is more than the term
"for Your salvation we hope all day" *227.
That is, that however much there was the "for Your salvation we hope all day," it is surpassed in this through "titzpi l'raglei Mashiach" at the time of "this bow is seen in the world adorned with bright colors."
And based on this, a question is resolved that one can ask regarding the recitation of "for Your salvation we hope all day" three times a day:
If one says "for Your salvation we hope all day" in the morning,
it refers to the entire day
("all day"),
why must one say it again in the Minchah prayer and again in the Maariv prayer?
The explanation of this is –
in addition to that which by saying it in the Minchah prayer one demonstrates that if Mashiach has not yet come, heaven forbid, after the morning prayer,
the hope for this has not been weakened
("we hoped").
But this is not entirely a sufficient explanation,
because for this very reason he already said it in the morning –
the explanation of this is understood based on the above:
In "kivinu" itself there are levels. There is a simple "kivinu,"
then there is a deeper "kivinu" –
as is expressed in the term tzipiyah. And consequently, even when one said it in the morning,
afterwards,
when the Minchah prayer comes,
he says it with an even deeper "kivinu"
(in the manner that he awaits this)
and so forth.
The lesson from the above discussion is twofold:
First and foremost, one must study Chassidus,
and also the discourses that speak about the aforementioned matters.
For this is the matter of "may your springs spread forth" within oneself. And so one must also effect this in others.
Afterwards –
and this is the main point,
as the Rebbe Maharash said that we want Mashiach our righteousness literally below ten handbreadths –
Mashiach must come in actual reality and bring the redemption literally.
And this is hastened through studying about Mashiach,
for then "whoever engages in the study of the laws of, etc., it is as if"
"etc." he actualizes this matter. And further –
as it states in the Tanchuma
(as discussed many times)
regarding the Holy Temple,
that through engaging in the study of the laws of the Temple,
(not only is it as if he built it,
with a kaf of comparison, but)
the building of My House is not nullified
(says the Almighty).
And may it be His will that this should be so in actual reality literally,
and especially when one connects it with the study of Rashi's commentary on the Torah,
whose essence is the plain meaning
(of the verses) –
Then our righteous Mashiach will come simply,
taking out every Jew from exile simply,
"And you will be gathered one by one, O children of Israel"
(as Rashi (whose essence is the simple meaning) brings it down in his commentary on the Torah).
"And behold, one like a son of man came with the clouds of heaven" simply,
one will fly simply,
and come to the Land of Israel in its completeness simply,
and in a manner of crossing over from the outset –
that it will be "the Lord your God will enlarge your territory" simply,
and in a manner of Mashiach "now."
He began to play the melody "We Want Mashiach Now" niet niet nikavo. He instructed to play a joyous melody,
and he himself began to play the melody of the hakafot of his father, of blessed memory.
Afterwards he said:
Those who need to make a final blessing,
will certainly make a final blessing.
After the afternoon prayer he began to play "He will build the Holy Temple," etc.
