English translation 1
In the Ten Days of Repentance,
In the Ten Days of Repentance,
whose essence is repentance,
Shabbat is especially distinguished.
Because Shabbat in general
(throughout the year)
is connected with repentance,
"Shab"bat [is] the letters of "teshu"vah"
(as the Alter Rebbe says in Iggeret HaTeshuvah1).
That is, that Shabbat in general is distinguished from the days before and after it in that it is especially connected with repentance -
All the more so, a Shabbat during the Ten Days of Repentance,
Shabbat Shuvah,
is connected with greater strength and vigor with repentance.
This means that in repentance there are several levels:
In general, "all his days are in repentance"2
(as brought also in Likkutei Torah on our parshah3),
repentance must be throughout all the days of the year. On the day of Shabbat,
the letters "teshuv",
the matter of repentance applies even more. During the Ten Days of Repentance, repentance applies even more - "Although repentance and crying out are always beneficial,
during the ten days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur they are most beneficial and are accepted immediately"4. And on this very Shabbat during the Ten Days of Repentance,
Shabbat Shuvah,
where "Shabbat [is] the letters of teshuv" - repentance is with greater strength and vigor,
higher than all other times.
From this it is also understood,
that there is an elevation in the repentance of Shabbat Shuvah even relative to the repentance on Yom Kippur - because Shabbat is the source from which all days are blessed5,
and consequently, since Shabbat Shuvah always blesses Yom Kippur which falls in the following week, it also includes the repentance of Yom Kippur,
there is an elevation in the repentance on Shabbat Shuvah which has the power to bless the repentance of Yom Kippur.
That is, that although simply, on Yom Kippur is the highest level of repentance,
as the Rambam rules in the halakhah6 that of the entire year, the essence of the matter of repentance is on Yom Kippur,
- however, since Shabbat is the source from which all days are blessed,
it is understood that there is an elevation in the repentance of Shabbat Shuvah relative to the repentance on Yom Kippur.
All matters are "for the sake of Israel"7,
in order that Israel should perform their service to their Master.
Thus it is also understood regarding that which Shabbat Shuvah contains within itself the most elevated repentance,
higher than the repentance of the entire year,
even higher than Yom Kippur - that this is for the sake of Israel,
in order that Jews should utilize this Shabbat to perform repentance in this manner. And from this it is also understood that a Jew has on Shabbat Shuvah the powers to be able to do this in actuality.
And simply
(according to the level of the matter about which we speak):
Shabbat, its essence is delight,
"and you shall call Shabbat a delight"8.
In contrast, Yom Kippur is simply not particularly connected with delight.
From this it is understood that the repentance on Shabbat Shuvah contains within itself the elevation relative to the repentance even on Yom Kippur - that this is done out of delight,
as will be explained.
And although, of course, Yom Kippur is also connected with delight,
and on the contrary - more with delight than Shabbat,
because Yom Kippur is "a Shabbat of solemn rest"9. And as explained in Chassidut10 that on Yom Kippur there is the revelation of the innermost aspect of Atik,
which is connected with the entry on Yom Kippur into the Holy of Holies. And this also applies today
(when there is no physical Beit HaMikdash),
because "and I will dwell in their midst"11 within each and every one12 in the spiritual Beit HaMikdash that exists in every Jew,
- which is connected with the matter of delight -
However, according to the simple law and according to what is stated in the simple meaning of the verse,
Shabbat specifically is connected with delight,
"and you shall call Shabbat a delight".
And based on this, it would seemingly appear that there is a contradiction between the revealed aspect of Torah and the inner aspect of Torah. However, in truth it is not so. Because there cannot be a contradiction between the revealed aspect of Torah and the inner aspect of Torah,
because they are both a part of one Torah:
The revealed aspect of Torah is the body of Torah and the inner aspect of Torah is the soul of Torah13.
And according to what is written14 "and this is the Torah, a man",
it is understood that Torah is compared to a living man15,
where a living man consists of a body and a soul. And not as if they are two separate things,
that a soul is found in a body in the manner of a soul being found in a vessel,
in which case they remain two separate things,
Rather, they become one thing:
The body is entirely permeated by the soul,
and there is no part of the body that is not enlivened by the soul.
And likewise, the soul is entirely clothed in the body and gives it life and sustains it with a physical vitality. Until the body and soul become one thing.
This too is in Torah,
"This is the Torah, man",
so the body of Torah and the soul of Torah are one thing. The revealed part of Torah is the body of the inner dimension of Torah, and the inner dimension of Torah is the soul of the revealed part of Torah.
And consequently it is understood that there cannot be any contradiction between the revealed part of Torah and the inner dimension of Torah.
It is true that each of the two parts of Torah
(the revealed and the inner)
has its own particular rules of study — this is analogous to how in the revealed part of Torah itself, the laws of monetary matters have their rules of study and the laws of prohibitions have their rules of study,
and "we do not derive monetary law from prohibitory law"<sup>16</sup>;
און "ממונא מאיסורא לא ילפינן" 16;
And moreover — Aggadah has its rules of study and Halachah has other rules —
Nevertheless, we see that sometimes the halachah in the revealed part of Torah is decided based on what is stated in Aggadah,
and even based on what is stated in the Zohar. As we find in many places in the Beis Yosef that he decides a halachah based on a Zohar,
and he notes the source alongside it.
And likewise we find in the Rambam, laws whose source is in the Zohar.
That is, from a matter that is stated in the Zohar,
and at length
(relatively),
a halachah is extracted,
which becomes one halachah for everyone,
both for people of the revealed and for people of the inner dimension of Torah.
From this it is also understood that when we speak of people of the revealed and people of the inner dimension of Torah,
it does not mean that these are exclusively people of the revealed and those exclusively people of the inner dimension of Torah,
but rather that this is their primary matter. However, certainly each of them also has the other matter,
because it is one Torah, and heaven forbid to say that a Jew has only a part of it.
And that which is stated17 that there can be one who learns one part of Torah in a previous incarnation and in this incarnation he should learn another part of Torah — the meaning is not that in this incarnation he learns only that part of Torah,
and not at all another part of Torah. One cannot say that this incarnation absolves him from a part of Torah, heaven forbid.
Rather, the meaning is,
in what his primary study consists.
Analogous to "in what he was more careful"18.
And likewise, as this is regarding the service in the line of Yissachar,
dwellers of the tent,
and the service in the line of Zevulun,
businesspeople,
masters of good deeds:
It is not the simple meaning that Yissachar does only the service in his line and Zevulun only in his line,
rather each one also does the second service,
but primarily the service of each one consists in his line.
As the Alter Rebbe explains in Iggeres HaKodesh19,
that regarding dwellers of the tent who are primarily occupied with the study of Torah,
there must also be acts of kindness,
charity,
as our Sages said20
(in the revealed part of Torah)
"Whoever says I have only Torah, even Torah he does not have,
rather Torah and acts of kindness",
that is, if he does not have acts of kindness,
he is not even in the category of Yissachar.
And the meaning of this is not that in the type of Yissachar there must be acts of kindness in another incarnation — that is contrary to the simple meaning of the halachah. Rather, there must be with them acts of kindness in this incarnation
(when they have the study of Torah).
Likewise, regarding masters of good deeds there must also be study of Torah,
at least one verse in the morning, one verse in the evening,
and with this he fulfills "This book of the Torah shall not depart from your mouth"21,
as the Gemara in Menachos22 derives from this verse that there must be at least one verse in the morning, etc.
From this it is understood that when he has one verse in the morning, one verse in the evening,
not only does he have Torah,
but he learns Torah in the manner of "shall not depart etc. from your mouth",
because the Torah that he learned
(one verse)
spreads over the entire day.
From this it is also understood regarding Yissachar,
that the acts of kindness that he has spread over the entire day.
There is only a difference in what his primary matter consists:
Regarding Yissachar, their primary service consists in the study of Torah,
but they also have acts of kindness,
and regarding Zevulun, their primary service consists in masters of good deeds,
supporters of Torah and the like, but they also have the study of Torah.
And this is also regarding the people of the revealed and the people of the inner dimensions of the Torah - that it is not the simple meaning that the one who studies the revealed aspect of the Torah does not study the inner dimensions of the Torah at all, Heaven forbid,
and likewise the one who studies the inner dimensions of the Torah does not study the revealed aspect of the Torah at all, Heaven forbid,
but certainly each one studies both things,
because they are one thing,
there is only a difference in what constitutes his primary essence.
And the necessity to study both parts of the one Torah,
the revealed aspect of the Torah and the inner dimensions of the Torah - is even more so in these generations of ours,
because now it is "a mitzvah to reveal this wisdom"23,
and there must be a dissemination of the wellsprings with greater vigor and strength.
And likewise we see also on the other hand,
that there must also be the study of the revealed aspect of the Torah - as we see by the great luminaries that by them the order was that first they studied the revealed aspect of the Torah and afterwards they came to the study of the inner dimensions of the Torah.
And based on all this it is understood that there cannot be any contradiction between the revealed aspect of the Torah and the inner dimensions of the Torah.
And this is also understood regarding our matter:
According to the revealed aspect it comes out that on Yom Kippur the primary matter is teshuvah
(in relation to the entire year).
According to the inner dimensions of the matters it comes out that on Shabbat Shuvah,
from which Yom Kippur is blessed,
there is an elevation in teshuvah even relative to Yom Kippur.
Likewise - according to the revealed aspect, specifically Shabbat is connected with delight,
"and you shall call the Shabbat a delight"24. Except when Yom Kippur falls on the day of Shabbat,
then Yom Kippur also has the aspect of delight. And on the contrary - an additional delight,
because there is the "I benefited" of Yom Kippur25 which adds to the matters of Shabbat. But even then the primary delight is connected with it being Shabbat.
And according to the inner dimensions of the matters it comes out that also Yom Kippur is connected with delight.
Which seemingly these two matters are in contradiction with each other.
One says,
that since this is the body of the Torah and this is the soul of the Torah - they are not a contradiction with each other,
and on the contrary - they are one thing.
And the elevation in the teshuvah on Shabbat Shuvah even relative to the teshuvah on Yom Kippur
(as it is according to the inner dimensions of the matters)
is also understood how the matter is according to the revealed aspect,
that Shabbat's essence is delight,
consequently the teshuvah on Shabbat Shuvah is connected with delight. Which this is not present on Yom Kippur
(according to the revealed aspect),
and all the more so not on the other days of the Ten Days of Repentance.
And from this side the teshuvah on Shabbat Shuvah has an elevation relative to the teshuvah during the Ten Days of Repentance and even on Yom Kippur.
And one should connect this with what is explained in Chassidus26 regarding Yom Kippur,
that it is called27 "Yom HaKippurim",
like Purim,
but with a letter khaf of comparison - because Purim accomplishes the same matters that are accomplished on Yom Kippur in a higher manner:
On Yom Kippur all matters are connected with spirituality:
there are the five afflictions28,
and Jews down here are then like angels,
until this is also expressed in their garments,
that one wears a kittel,
and one of the reasons for this is,
because one is then like angels29,
for by angels there is no eating and drinking;
וואס בא מלאכים אין שם אכילה ושתי';
However on the day of Purim there is also the matter of the lot
(like on Yom Kippur)
etc. - but then all matters are connected with physical matters,
with eating and drinking,
until not just eating and drinking but in a manner that is above measure and limitation
(more than at other times,
even on a Festival),
"a person is obligated to become intoxicated on Purim until he does not know"30,
with a "feast and joy"31.
And therefore Purim is higher than Yom Kippur,
because on Purim all matters come down and take hold also in the physicality of the world. And therefore Yom Kippur is only "Kippurim".
Likewise it can be said in the elevation of
(the teshuvah of)
Shabbat Shuvah relative to
(the teshuvah of)
Yom Kippur:
On Yom Kippur the matter of teshuvah is connected with spiritual matters - with the five afflictions,
there is then no eating and drinking,
Jews are then like angels etc.;
אידן זיינען דעמולט דומה למלאכים וכו';
However on Shabbat Shuvah
(the Shabbat from which Yom Kippur is blessed)
it is specifically connected with physical delight,
that it is a mitzvah to delight in it with eating and drinking,
and not just eating and drinking,
but fatty meat and aged wine
(similar to on Purim - eating and drinking more than at other times).
And accordingly, the teshuvah of Shabbos Shuvah is connected with physical matters,
not like on Yom Kippur when it is connected only with spiritual matters — therefore there is a superiority in the teshuvah of Shabbos Shuvah over the teshuvah of Yom Kippur.
And from this is also understood the superiority of the teshuvah of Shabbos Shuvah over the teshuvah during the other Ten Days of Repentance:
During all the Ten Days of Repentance one may fast. To the extent that it is known the custom of many to fast during the Ten Days of Repentance32. And also on Rosh Hashanah
(the first days of the Ten Days of Repentance)
there is a distinction regarding fasting between the day and night of Rosh Hashanah<sup>33</sup>;
איז דא דער חילוק בנוגע צו פאסטן צווישן יום וליל ראש השנה 33;
however, on Shabbos Shuvah — there is no opinion that one should fast then.
It follows from this that the teshuvah of Shabbos Shuvah is more connected specifically with physical pleasure,
not like during the other Ten Days of Repentance when there can be a fast, etc.
Therefore there is a superiority in the teshuvah of Shabbos Shuvah over the teshuvah during the rest of the Ten Days of Repentance.
The lesson from this in the service of man:
When Shabbos Shuvah arrives,
when there is the superiority that teshuvah is connected with physical matters and out of pleasure,
— this awakens a Jew how his service should be then. Because although Shabbos is "sanctified and stands"34,
the matters of Shabbos are accomplished from Above,
nevertheless a Jew must always add through his service — there must be the "to make the Shabbos"35,
and "one who delights the Shabbos"36,
that he adds pleasure on Shabbos. And in general — the matters of Shabbos are brought about through service before Shabbos,
"whoever toiled on Shabbos eve will eat on Shabbos"37.
And therefore when Shabbos Shuvah arrives,
when there is the superiority of teshuvah connected with physical matters and out of pleasure — this must awaken a Jew how he must do his service in order to bring about that the Shabbos be in perfection.
So that also that which the Shabbos blesses Yom Kippur
(and therefore there is then a superiority in the teshuvah even over the teshuvah of Yom Kippur)
comes about through the service of a Jew. Because as mentioned,
a Jew through his service brings about that the Shabbos be in perfection,
"whoever toiled on Shabbos eve will eat on Shabbos",
and when he brings about that the Shabbos be in perfection,
he also effects that the Shabbos bless in perfection the days that follow,
including also Yom Kippur.
The practical lesson in the service of man from Shabbos Shuvah:
One might think that the service of teshuvah must be when he studies Torah,
he prays to the Above during prayer,
when he fulfills a mitzvah;
בשעת ער איז מקיים א מצוה;
but when he occupies himself with his physical matters,
eating and drinking,
strolling, etc.
(with all the ten matters that the Rambam enumerates38),
then the service of teshuvah need not be.
Shabbos Shuvah teaches him,
that teshuvah must be in all physical matters,
in eating and drinking,
even eating and drinking of fatty meat and aged wine,
and all out of pleasure.
And it is not sufficient that teshuvah be in spiritual matters,
as it is on Yom Kippur.
Because that is no accomplishment. Rather, also when he eats and drinks and does all his physical matters, there must be teshuvah to Hashem.
And since the Torah gives the instruction to every Jew on Shabbos Shuvah,
it is understood that the Torah also gives an enabling power for this,
that a Jew should be able to carry it out in practice.
And the superiority of Shabbos Shuvah and the lesson connected with it,
and how this is a lesson for all times — is further understood based on what is explained in the writings of the Arizal39,
that the seven days during the Ten Days of Repentance between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur,
which are seven consecutive days, correspond to all the seven days of the week,
and each day of the Ten Days of Repentance corresponds to that same day of the week throughout the entire year,
and one must then do teshuvah for that day throughout the entire year:
Sunday corresponds to every Sunday during the entire year and one must then do teshuvah for every Sunday,
and so too regarding the rest of the days.
And so too regarding the Shabbos of the seven days,
which is always Shabbos Shuvah,
it corresponds to all the Shabbosos during the entire year,
and the teshuvah on Shabbos Shuvah must be for all the Shabbosos.
And since every Shabbos is the letters "tashuv"
(as above),
it follows that Shabbos Shuvah is even more connected with "tashuv",
teshuvah,
because it corresponds to all the Shabbosos of the year,
and the teshuvah on this Shabbos must be for all the Shabbosos.
And since Shabbat is the source from which all days are blessed,
and all the Shabbats of the year that bless all the days of the year
(each Shabbat blesses the week that follows it),
are parallel to Shabbat Shuvah — it follows that the teshuvah on Shabbat Shuvah must be in a manner that will be drawn forth upon all the days of the year.
And regarding the lesson of Shabbat Shuvah — that which "all his days are in teshuvah,"
must also be at the time when a Jew does all his physical matters,
and this must be out of delight.
And since in the service of teshuvah there is the principle of "double for the wise"40,
as the Alter Rebbe explains in Iggeret HaTeshuvah41.
— There he speaks regarding teshuvah in Torah study,
that "one who was accustomed to read one page, should read two pages,
to review one chapter, should review two chapters,"
but so it is regarding teshuvah on all the mitzvot,
because Talmud Torah is only one of the 248 positive commandments,
and there are another 247 mitzvot,
regarding which the matter of teshuvah also applies,
in the manner of "double for the wise." —
So too regarding the manner of teshuvah of Shabbat Shuvah,
connected with physical matters and out of delight — that this must be in the manner of "double for the wise."
The intention in this is not that there should be "double for the wise" in the quantity of eating and drinking on Shabbat Shuvah,
but primarily in quality. And this will also bring about "double for the wise" in quantity.
And even if there is lechatchilah "double for the wise" in quantity — this too is a mitzvah on Shabbat.
According to the above, one understands the greatness of the preciousness and the greatness of the elevation of this Shabbat,
Shabbat Shuvah,
that then a Jew has the power to do teshuvah that is above teshuvah,
in a manner that is higher than the teshuvah of the entire year,
and even from the Ten Days of Repentance,
and even before Yom Kippur!
Because this is a teshuvah that goes through and is connected also with his physical matters,
and a teshuvah which he does out of delight and joy,
even physical delight and joy.
That is, although teshuvah in general is in a manner of awe,
fear of Hashem and awe of shame etc. — on Shabbat Shuvah, together with this, the teshuvah is also out of delight and joy.
And as is also understood from what is explained in the aforementioned Iggeret HaTeshuvah,
that Shabbat is the letters of "teshuv" [תשוב],
is the aspect of teshuvah ila'ah,
which teshuvah ila'ah is out of joy42.
A question seemingly arises on this:
Since on Shabbat Shuvah there must be an even higher teshuvah than in the days of the Ten Days of Repentance that precede it
(and more than the rest of the days of the year)
— then there should have been more opposite to joy,
because then the undesirable matters for which one must do teshuvah are emphasized more.
The answer to this is,
that it is precisely the opposite:
When Shabbat Shuvah arrives,
when one comes to a higher level in teshuvah,
— it is not that then additional undesirable matters are revealed in the person upon which he must do teshuvah,
which previously he did not see,
but on the contrary — in the days of the Ten Days of Repentance that precede it, he did teshuvah on all matters upon which he needed to do teshuvah,
and when he comes to a higher level in teshuvah on Shabbat Shuvah,
it is because he stands on a higher level,
then he must do teshuvah on new matters which previously were not at all undesirable matters for him
(relative to his previous state),
but according to his higher state now, he must also do teshuvah on these matters.
— And regarding this43, why in the Amidah prayer does one say "forgive us,"
for seemingly he stands then after the previous prayer,
after Pesukei DeZimra,
the blessings of Shema and Shema,
he has already done teshuvah on his undesirable matters,
so what is fitting after all this to say in the Amidah prayer "forgive us"?
It is explained,
that after the prayers before the Amidah, he indeed wiped away his undesirable matters,
and then when he comes to the Amidah, he is elevated to a higher standing and state,
whereupon new matters arise in him for which he must say "forgive us,"
which specifically according to his current standing and state are matters for which he needs forgiveness,
unlike according to his previous standing and state, he did not need any forgiveness for the same matters.
This is not like the melancholics who say,
that even before this the matters were undesirable for him, only he did not know about them,
and now that he is elevated he also sees the matters,
and does teshuvah on them —
Chassidus says:
No! Previously these matters were not at all undesirable for him. And specifically through his being elevated in his level, at that moment new matters come upon him for which he needs to have forgiveness.
Thus say the great luminaries of the spreading of the wellsprings,
or the masters of the wellsprings — that previously these matters were not at all a deficiency for him according to his level at that time,
but now, at the time when he will be elevated to a higher level, new matters come upon him which he needs to guard with precision.
And corresponding to this is the law in the Gemara44 regarding a “Torah scholar upon whose garment a stain is found” — he is liable to a punishment of the opposite of life, unlike a stain on the garment of one who is not a Torah scholar, which is not a deficiency at all.
That is, when there is a stain on the garment of one who is not a Torah scholar,
it is not that this is a deficiency but one does not see it,
rather it is not a stain at all,
and on the contrary — it is his garment;
ואדרבה - דאס איז לבושו;
when the person is elevated to the level of a Torah scholar,
then the stain on that same garment becomes a deficiency,
and to such an extent that the stain is the opposite of the existence of the Torah scholar,
and therefore he receives a punishment of the opposite of existence.
In the same place where it states that for one who is not a Torah scholar a stain on his garment is not a deficiency at all,
it states that if he becomes a Torah scholar it is a deficiency,
for which comes the opposite of existence.
And the reason for this is as above:
Because he has been elevated to a higher level of Torah scholar,
new matters of precision come upon him which he must guard so that they not be present with him.
An example of this in halachah:
In several matters one is told not to do a certain matter of good and holiness because it appears as arrogance.45 But when he stands on a more elevated level, he should indeed do it.
And corresponding to this is also the matter of teshuvah:
In teshuvah there are many levels, one above the other. And the teshuvah that a Jew needs to do depends on his standing and situation:
When he is in a lower standing and situation,
teshuvah is required for lesser matters;
מאנט זיך א תשובה אויף דברים פחותים;
When he is elevated in his level,
new matters of precision come upon him for which he needs to do teshuvah,
which, when he was in his previous standing and situation, no teshuvah was required at all for these matters,
because at that time they were not a deficiency for him.
As explained in Tanya46 that “the essence of teshuvah is in the heart,
and the heart has many aspects and levels, and everything is according to the person, and according to the time and place, etc.”
Based on this, one can explain the well-known story of the Rebbe
(the Rebbe Rashab)
and his son, my master, father-in-law, and teacher, the Rebbe47:
— Once, on the day after Yom Kippur, my master, father-in-law, and teacher, the Rebbe, asked his father:
What must one do now? He answered him:
“Now, only now, must one do teshuvah.”
And at first glance it is not understood
(as discussed many times):
The Mishnah relates48 that Bava ben Buta would bring a suspensive guilt-offering every day of the year,
except for the day after Yom Kippur,
because at that time there was certainly no matter for which he would need to bring a suspensive guilt-offering after the complete forgiveness and atonement of Yom Kippur.49
So what is the meaning,
that now
(the day after Yom Kippur)
one must only now do teshuvah?!
According to the above, it is understood that this is precisely the point:
After Yom Kippur has passed,
when it was “before Hashem you shall be pure,”50
and one has been elevated to a more exalted level,
he becomes a new entity,
which must come to teshuvah anew,
according to the measure of his current existence — now, only now, must one do teshuvah.
That is, although “all his days are in teshuvah,”
and every Jew is presumed to be fit, that he has done teshuvah all his days completely — nevertheless, when he is elevated to a higher level,
he must come to teshuvah for new matters which previously were not a deficiency for him at all.
Based on what was explained above, it is also understood regarding Shabbos Shuvah,
that when one is elevated to the level of sublime teshuvah that exists on Shabbos Shuvah,
this teshuvah then relates to new matters that come when one stands at such a very lofty level
(and not to undesirable matters from before,
because they were already nullified through the teshuvah of the previous days).
And therefore, the teshuvah on Shabbos Shuvah is with joy and a good heart and with delight,
knowing that this teshuvah comes
(not from a deficiency, but)
from a virtue,
because he stands at a more elevated level. And as mentioned above,
that sublime teshuvah
(the teshuvah of the Shabbos day)
is with joy and a good heart.
And this is the practical instruction of Shabbos Shuvah,
that teshuvah must also be in his physical matters,
and with delight and joy.
First and foremost, one must contemplate with intellect what constitutes the essence and elevation of Shabbos Shuvah;
וואס לכל לראש דארף מען זיך מתבונן זיין בשכל אין וואס עס באשטייט דער ענין און עילוי פון שבת שובה;
But afterward, this must descend into actual deed,
for the deed is the main thing51.
And then,
when it descends into actual deed,
the study also becomes "great,"
for great is study that leads to deed52. And furthermore:
immediately when he contemplates it and it is a resolved matter that this will descend into actual deed — the study becomes great.
And the instruction regarding practice:
In all matters with which a Jew is occupied,
even his physical matters, eating,
drinking,
taking a walk, etc. — there must be teshuvah to Hashem.
When he does his physical matters, he must indeed be occupied with them,
he must engage in his business dealings with faith53,
and conduct himself according to the custom of merchants54 — indeed "without a heart and a heart"55,
but he must do this with faith — yet together with this, this very thing must be in the manner of "in all your ways know Him"<sup>56</sup>;
אבער ער דארף דאס טאן באמונה - אבער ביחד עם זה דארף דאס גופא זיין באופן פון "בכל דרכיך דעהו" 56;
even in his business dealings there must be teshuvah to Hashem.
Similar to this is the explanation in a story heard from chassidim,
and it seems also from my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe.
Here we see how every detail in a story of chassidim is precise:
They tell about R. Binyamin Kletzker,
one of the great chassidim of the Rebbes,
who was occupied with business dealings — that once he made a calculation on paper in connection with his commerce,
and on each line he wrote the figures for a part of the transactions,
and when it came to writing the total after all these lines — he wrote "there is none besides Him."
It is self-understood that he was not making a joke, Heaven forbid,
but rather this was his true conduct.
One must understand:
Since he wrote,
instead of the total,
"there is none besides Him" because that is the true reality — should he not have written on each and every line,
instead of the figures,
"there is none besides Him,"
for that is indeed the truth?!
The explanation of this is:
According to the law of the Torah, business dealings must be with faith,
and one must conduct himself according to the custom of merchants. Therefore, he had to write on each and every line the figures of the calculation — to know who pays,
why he needs to pay and how much he pays, etc.
(not to mention on Shabbos);
(ניט אום שבת גערעדט);
When it comes, however, to the total — which is the overall calculation made once a year,
or once in a period, etc.
This is not relevant to the business dealings,
but rather relevant to himself, etc. — the total is "there is none besides Him."
And this is like the difference between the general intention in mitzvos and the particular intention in mitzvos
(as discussed in the previous discourses57),
that there is a particular intention in each mitzvah,
which is connected with the particular delight of that particular mitzvah:
Afterward, one comes to the general intention in the mitzvah — in which all mitzvos are equal,
which is analogous to the "total." Regarding the particular intention, this is a higher world,
a different matter.
And from this, as it is in spiritual matters
(in the intentions of the mitzvos)
it descends downward into the physical world,
so that there are the figures on each and every line that pertain to the particular calculation. And afterward, one comes to the total of the entirety of the matter,
which is "there is none besides Him."
And corresponding to this is also the instruction of Shabbos Shuvah:
Along with this, that a person must engage in his business dealings with faith,
he must also do teshuvah to Hashem.
And regarding this, there is also the instruction from the opposite side—from Yom Kippur:
One might think that teshuvah needs to be done when one is occupied with physical matters,
with eating and drinking and the like;
מיט עסן און טרינקען וכיו"ב;
but when he is engaged in spiritual matters,
he studies the Torah of the Holy One, blessed be He,
for the Torah and the Holy One, blessed be He, are entirely one58,
he fulfills the mitzvos,
from the term tzavta (togetherness) and connection59—then why does he need to do teshuvah at that time?
Yom Kippur teaches him,
at which time teshuvah is connected with spiritual matters—that even then he must engage in the service of teshuvah. As it is stated60, "to bring the righteous to teshuvah,"
even the righteous need to come to the service of teshuvah.
In any case, regarding our subject,
Shabbos Shuvah,
the instruction is that even when one is occupied with physical matters, there must also be teshuvah in them.
This is an instruction for all Jews,
also for those who are in the camp of Yissachar,
the study of Torah,
who are primarily occupied with Torah study—for the matter of "his Torah is his craft" was primarily in the time of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai61,
but now this does not exist,
or is very minimal,
and consequently,
even those whose main occupation is Torah study have a minority of time when they are also occupied with physical matters
(as the Alter Rebbe explains in Iggeres HaKodesh,
as mentioned above (section)),
so even in those times, the service of teshuvah must be present in them.
And so too is the general instruction
(from Shabbos Shuvah)
regarding the entirety of the service of spreading the wellsprings.
For it must be "adorn yourself first and then adorn others"62—so there is the instruction beginning from how it must be in oneself:
When one is at a farbrengen and someone pushes another,
and sometimes—he even "shoves" him,
he can justify himself by thinking that he does it for the sake of Heaven.
If this is a mitzvah—he is not such a great fool to delude himself like this,
but if he does it for the sake of Heaven—he does think so.
One must know that even if he thinks this is for the sake of Heaven,
the "clever one" also mixes into this,
and he derives pleasure from it:
since he is a person of power,
or the other is afraid of him and the like,
he can push him and even shove him!
The one who pushes or shoves the other has forgotten that he is pushing and shoving a Jew,
whose body is the vehicle for his soul, which is "literally a part of G-d above"63,
and when one causes pain to the body, it causes pain to the soul,
as explained in many places in Chassidus,
in Tanya64 etc.,
and it is also understood and simple,
that events of the body affect the soul,
and the soul of a Jew,
which is "literally a part of G-d above," is like the entire essence,
the Essence and Being,
for when you grasp a part of the essence, you grasp all of it
(as the Baal Shem Tov says65 in the name of Rav Saadiah Gaon)
from this it is understood whom one pushes and whom one shoves when he pushes and shoves the body of a Jew!
Thus one pushes and shoves a "part of G-d above,"
for the essence—when you grasp a part of it, you grasp all of it!
How does it happen that a person does this? It is because he forgot that "Hashem stands over him"66. Therefore, at the moment of the act, when he stands at the farbrengen, he must do teshuvah,
to return to Hashem,
then he will remember that "Hashem stands over him."
And this is an instruction that is not so relevant later,
but on the contrary—specifically during the farbrengen,
for when one goes out into the street—he will not approach someone and push him;
ווייל בשעת מ'גייט ארויס אין גאס - וועט מען דאך ניט צוגיין צו איינעם און אים שטופן;
but during the farbrengen, when everyone stands together,
and it is not a situation of "can a man hide in secret places and I not see him"67,
it could be that one might push the other—then one must do teshuvah,
then one remembers that "Hashem stands over him."
And so too is the instruction when there is the "adorn others"—spreading the wellsprings outward:
When one goes out into the street to speak with another Jew who externally appears to be occupied only with physical matters,
one should not be deterred from speaking with him about teshuvah and about the highest levels of teshuvah,
as this is on Shabbos Shuvah—
Because this itself is taught on Shabbos Shuvah,
that the work of teshuvah must also be in physical matters,
and out of delight and joy.
And one should not make calculations whether that person is up to it,
and what that person's intention is, etc., etc. — rather, one must tell him the entire truth,
that he must do teshuvah,
and the meaning of teshuvah is to return to Hashem and to oneself.
From this itself is understood the greatness of the delight and joy connected with such teshuvah — because there is no greater delight and joy than the delight and joy one has from finding oneself.
And if that person argues:
"But it has been so many years that I have not been up to it."
One says to him:
On the contrary — from the greatness of the delight and joy that one has at the moment he returns to his father or to himself after having been away for a short while, it is certainly understandable how great is the delight and joy at the moment he returns to his Father in Heaven and to himself after having been away for an extended period of time!
And as for the fact that in the intervening time he was in a different state and condition — he should not be affected by it. And especially since it is not his fault, because he is a captive infant.
And after he does teshuvah, "we do not mention to him a thing or half a thing"68.
And in general — when one goes to speak with another Jew and wishes to influence him to do teshuvah,
to return to Hashem and to himself,
it is not the way to speak with him in a negative manner,
but rather to speak with him on the side of good.
Not like the preachers of old who used to speak about what was created on the second day of Maaseh Bereishis,
by which one sends that person away — our Nesi'im say,
that the conduct of Chassidus,
and this is the Torah of Chassidus,
is that one should speak on the side of good:
One should explain to that person the very great virtue that he possesses,
and that "ashreinu mah tov chelkeinu"69 with all three expressions in this,
that he is good himself,
and he has a soul that is literally a part of G-d above,
and the essence — when you grasp a part of it, you grasp all of it,
and one only needs to reveal it in him.
It can be that his true reality has been concealed by himself,
by another, or by the surroundings — but this is only a concealment,
and when one removes it,
his true reality will be revealed.
And when one speaks with that person in such a manner,
it opens a wide opening so that one can speak with him about all matters in a way that he will accept them with delight and joy,
in all matters of Torah and mitzvos in actual practice.
Beginning with the campaigns:
Ahavas Yisrael and Achdus Yisrael. And especially in these days.
Chinuch of oneself and chinuch of others. As is known, chinuch applies not only to those who are of the age of chinuch,
but also to those who are older — as understood from the saying of our Sages, of blessed memory70, "Who is wise? One who learns from every person." And the simple meaning of this is,
that one must learn from "every person,"
as per the simple language of the Mishnah,
which does not depart from its simple meaning. And if he does not see what he can learn from someone,
it is not that there is nothing to learn from that person,
but rather that he himself lacks wisdom.
And from this one comes to the specific campaigns:
Torah,
Tefillin,
Mezuzah,
Tzedakah,
A house full of books — Yavneh and its sages,
Shabbos Kodesh and Yom Tov candles,
Kashrus of food and drink, and Taharas Hamishpachah,
And especially in this matter that the time has occasioned — that every Jew should have a letter in one of the general Sifrei Torah,
that each one should be from "the people who are written in the book"
(also openly).
And also in this matter — providing each one who needs it with all the things one must have on Erev Yom Kippur,
for "whoever eats on the ninth, Scripture accounts it to him as if he fasted on the ninth and the tenth"71,
and from Motza'ei Yom Kippur,
and afterwards — the Four Species and all the matters that one needs for the festival of Sukkos,
Zeman Simchaseinu,
so that one can celebrate it with true joy and delight.
And even if it seems that the work,
and the work of speaking with a Jew who is in a state and condition connected with physicality,
as above,
is difficult —
One should know that it is Shabbos Shuvah,
and on the day of Shabbos, "all your work is done"72,
and one does all matters out of delight,
consequently there is nothing to fear,
and on the contrary.
And through the service and the totality of our deeds and our service now in the time of exile,
we hasten even more to the true and complete redemption,
speedily in our actual days,
the day that is entirely Shabbat and rest for the life of the worlds73.
It was spoken many times that from every single detail in a matter that a Jew sees or hears, there is a lesson in the service of Hashem.
Because since "for my sake was the world created"74,
and "I was created to serve my Maker"75,
therefore every thing that occurs in the world that the Jew sees or hears is for his sake,
in order to serve his Maker with it. This is the well-known teaching of the Baal Shem Tov76,
that in every thing that a Jew sees or hears, there is in it,
and consequently he must take from it,
a lesson in his service to his Maker.
So too it is understood regarding the specific determination of pure days in the days of the month,
that in this as well there is a lesson in the service of Hashem.
So too regarding Shabbat Shuvah:
Shabbat Shuvah always occurs during the Ten Days of Repentance.
But in this itself there can be differences in which day of the month it occurs.
In the determination of this year it occurs on the eighth of Tishrei77, which is a day after which is the ninth of Tishrei,
the eve of Yom Kippur,
and "one who eats on the ninth, Scripture accounts it to him as if he fasted on the ninth and the tenth"
(as above),
and afterwards comes the tenth of Tishrei,
Yom Kippur.
There must be in this a specific lesson
(in addition to the general lesson of Shabbat Shuvah discussed above at length).
And the concept:
The specific concept of the eighth of Tishrei in the annals of Israel need not be sought,
because it is stated in the verse
(as discussed many times78):
It is related in the Tanakh79 that the dedication of the first Holy Temple was "seven days and seven days, fourteen days",
and the second seven days began on the fifteenth of Tishrei80,
and since these seven days were consecutive, it follows that the eighth of Tishrei was the first day of the dedication of the first Holy Temple.
- And all the days of the dedication of the Temple were great, which were celebrated with great joy.
As is understood from what the Sages relate81 that at the dedication of the first Holy Temple there was such great joy,
that on Yom Kippur they did not fast,
rather they ate and drank in a manner of a feast and joy.
Until that at the time when they had a doubt whether it was correct to do so,
a heavenly voice went forth from above and said "you are all invited to the life of the World to Come"82,
that it is not only not detrimental, Heaven forbid,
but on the contrary - the joy at that time was even higher than the fast on Yom Kippur.
And from this is understood the most supreme elevation of the days of the dedication of the first Holy Temple.
And all the more so that among the days of the dedication themselves there is a special elevation on the first day of the dedication of the Temple.
And it is similar to how it was during the seven days of the consecration
(dedication),
and the twelve days when the princes offered their offerings,
in the Tabernacle:
All the days of the consecration had a most supreme elevation. So much so that the offering of the prince of the tribe of Ephraim on the Shabbat day superseded Shabbat83,
even though it was an individual offering, etc.
(as was discussed once at length84 how this is according to the revealed,
according to the homiletic, etc.).
Similar to the elevation of that which the dedication of the first Holy Temple superseded Yom Kippur.
Nevertheless, the first day of the consecration,
and similarly the seventh day of the consecration,
and the twelfth day,
had a special elevation. Therefore on the first day and on the twelfth day are enumerated all the offerings that the princes brought on all the days,
as explained in many places85.
Similarly also in the dedication of the first Holy Temple,
that although all the days of the dedication had a most supreme elevation,
nevertheless the first day
(the eighth of Tishrei)
had a special elevation.
- From the virtues of the first day of the dedication of the first Holy Temple:
Because then is the beginning of the dedication,
there is the principle that "all beginnings are difficult"86,
and consequently "according to the pain is the reward"87,
then there is a more supreme elevation than on the other days.
It is that "these days are remembered and performed"88,
every year on the eighth of Tishrei all the matters that occurred on the eighth of Tishrei, the first day of the dedication of the first Holy Temple, are repeated,
and this must come down into "and performed",
into a lesson in actual deed.
The question arises:
The Beis HaMikdash is not here today
(physically),
and one can remember the Beis HaMikdash as it once was — but how is a practical instruction for Shemini Atzeres of this year connected to the education of the Beis HaMikdash?
The answer to this is from the haftarah of this Shabbos
(Shabbos Shuvah).
The haftarah pertains to all Jews — as we see that the custom of Israel is to also review the haftarah after "Shnayim Mikra v'Echad Targum"89. In the Gemara90 it only states regarding "Shnayim Mikra v'Echad Targum,"
but we see that the custom of Israel is to also say the haftarah.
And this applies to all of Israel. Not only regarding the one who says the haftarah. Since he will say it publicly and communally, he is obligated to review the haftarah beforehand91 so that it should be for him
(similar to what is stated regarding the song of our parshah92)
in a manner of "and He put it in their mouths,"
but rather regarding all Jews. For the custom of Israel is to also review the haftarah.
And certainly all are obligated to hear the haftarah,
just like the reading of the Torah.
And additionally, we see the importance and status of the haftarah — it is stated in the haftarah of this Shabbos93 "and we will render the bulls of our lips"94.
There are several versions of the prayer where this verse is said every day,
and versions where it is also said on Shabbos;
און נוסחאות וואו מ'זאגט עס אויך ביום השבת;
but on this Shabbos it is even more emphasized because it is said in the haftarah with the blessings before and after.
In "V'nishlemah" there are many interpretations. Two of the interpretations are: (a)
"V'nishlemah" from the term payment,
that through "our lips"
(in this time)
we pay for the bulls that were offered in the Beis HaMikdash. (b)
"V'nishlemah" from the term completion,
that through this we complete what the offering of the sacrifices accomplished in the Beis HaMikdash.
That is, not in a b'dieved manner,
but l'chatchilah and l'chatchilah d'l'chatchilah,
and hiddur d'hiddur.
Based on this, it is also understood that "our lips" must be similar to the "bulls" that were offered in the Beis HaMikdash:
Just as the bulls had to be offered in the Beis HaMikdash,
and not outside the Beis HaMikdash,
for if one offers them outside the Sanctuary it is the opposite of the matter,
and it is connected with a severe prohibition etc.,
but they had to be offered in the Beis HaMikdash.
And it is not sufficient that there is an existence of the Beis HaMikdash,
and the bull and the owner of the bull are in a second place,
but the bull and the owner of the bull must be in the Beis HaMikdash and there the offering must take place —
So too regarding "and we will render the bulls of our lips" in this time,
that it must be in the Beis HaMikdash.
And it is not sufficient that one sees or knows about the Beis HaMikdash above,
but "our lips" must be in a Beis HaMikdash down here.
From this it is proven that even now there is a Beis HaMikdash.
— And a Beis HaMikdash in completeness,
so that now "and we will render the bulls of our lips" can be in completeness.
And especially since "and we will render the bulls of our lips" is
(like all things stated in the Torah)
both a command,
that there should be "and we will render the bulls of our lips,"
and a promise,
that surely there will be "and we will render the bulls of our lips,"
consequently it gives strength that one can fulfill even now the "and we will render the bulls of our lips" in the Beis HaMikdash which is also present now.
That is, that the Supreme One dwells and rests within each and every one of Israel:
Thus it is said "the heavens and the heavens of heavens cannot contain You,"
but when it comes to a Jew,
who has a part of G-d from above literally,
and the essence is that when you grasp his part you grasp the whole — there the Supreme One Himself dwells and rests.
And on the contrary — the primary dwelling of the Shechinah is specifically within each and every one of Israel,
and from this it is drawn also into the dwelling of the Shechinah in a physical Beis HaMikdash — as understood from the phrase "and I will dwell in their midst,"
"in it" is not said, but rather "in their midst,"
"in the midst of each and every one of Israel,"
which is a phrase of Chazal,
from the Shelah,
and it implies there that it is from the Zohar — it is seemingly not understood:
Why did he also need to use a negative phrase,
"in it is not said" — he could have initially said "and I will dwell in their midst — in the midst of each and every one of Israel"?
Only with this does he emphasize that without the matter of "And I will dwell in their midst — within each and every one" the matter of "And I will dwell in it" in the physical Beit HaMikdash cannot exist — "It does not say 'in it' but rather 'in their midst,'
within each and every one,"
and specifically when there is the "And I will dwell in their midst, within each and every one" can there be the indwelling of the Divine Presence "in it."
That is, the main aspect of the indwelling of the Divine Presence is within each and every Jew.
And how does a Jew make a Sanctuary for Hashem,
regarding which the Holy One, blessed be He, should say "And I will dwell in their midst — within each and every one"?
This is through the fact that there is the "Let them take for Me a portion — for My name"95,
that all matters that he does he dedicates to the Holy One, blessed be He,
meaning that all his matters are permeated with holiness and G‑dliness — because he does them all for the sake of Heaven etc.
From himself and from the thirteen96,
fifteen97 things of his,
which include within themselves all matters,
he dedicates to the Holy One, blessed be He,
and he dedicates it in a manner of giving,
for "one who gives gives with a generous eye."98
On the other hand — it is not the interpretation that he gives away everything he has and remains with nothing,
rather he gives from his things,
but with him it also remains.
As this was simply regarding the Mishkan:
Even though the Jews gave the thirteen
(fifteen)
(ט"ו)
things for the Mishkan, certainly a multitude of silver and gold remained with them,
as is understood from what the Gemara relates in Bechorot99 about the great multitude of silver and gold that the Jews received through the spoils of Egypt and the spoils of the sea.
And corresponding to this is also in the service of man in his spiritual Sanctuary — that he need not give away everything he has to charity and the like,
as the Rambam rules100,
that one should not give to charity more than a fifth or a tenth;
אז מ'זאל ניט געבן לצדקה מערער ווי א חומש אדער מעשר;
but on the other hand — through the fact that he gives away the fifth or tenth, he elevates all the rest of his matters,
as the Alter Rebbe explains.101
And through this he makes his spiritual Sanctuary,
regarding which the Holy One, blessed be He, says "And I will dwell in their midst — within each and every one."
From this it is understood how there is the "we remember and do" and the instruction of the Eighth of Tishrei, as it was the first time at the inauguration of the first Beit HaMikdash on the Eighth of Tishrei, every year
(also in the present time)
— because the spiritual Sanctuary within each Jew exists also now,
— and on the contrary — this is the primary Sanctuary.
"And I will dwell in their midst — it does not say 'in it' but rather 'in their midst,'
within each and every one."
And the instruction of the Eighth of Tishrei, the first day of the inauguration of the first Beit HaMikdash, is — that the spiritual Sanctuary within each one is already built,
through the "Let them take for Me for My name"
(as above),
and everything is already ready,
a Jew now needs to inaugurate the Sanctuary within him,
which inauguration comes after the building. And through this, an additional higher elevation is brought about in the Sanctuary.
As this was regarding the physical Beit HaMikdash, that the inauguration brought about an elevation in the Sanctuary
(as above).
And the inauguration must be in a more elevated manner, because it is connected with the inauguration of the first Beit HaMikdash
(which began on the Eighth of Tishrei):
Even though in general "the glory of this latter House shall be greater than that of the first,"102 nevertheless the first Temple has in it an advantage over the second Temple, in that it was from the outset in a most elevated manner,
and its inauguration was in a manner of expansion and great joy;
און דער חינוך זיינער איז געווען באופן של התרחבות ושמחה גדולה;
in contrast, the inauguration of the second Temple was out of poverty and constriction,
as related in the words of our Sages.
And there were ascents and descents,
at first there was a state of poverty,
afterwards "they became wealthy"103 etc.
And it was thus physically because it was thus spiritually there.
From this is also the instruction when the Eighth of Tishrei comes every year,
when "we remember and do" the matters that occurred on the Eighth of Tishrei in the time of the first Temple — that a person must inaugurate his spiritual Sanctuary from the outset in a manner of expansion and with great joy
(as it was in the first Temple).
And the matter of the inauguration of the Sanctuary in service is — inauguration in its simple sense,
as explained in Chassidus in the discourses of Chanukah104 that the inauguration of the Mishkan and the inauguration of the Beit HaMikdash are connected with the matter of inauguration in its simple sense,
"Train a youth according to his way."105
And the lesson of the Eighth of Tishrei comes as an addition to the general lesson of Shabbos Shuvah
(as discussed above at length),
which occurs this year on the Eighth of Tishrei,
that the work of teshuvah must also be in all physical matters that a Jew does,
and from joy and happiness.
What is the connection between them
(between the inauguration of the Beis HaMikdash (the first) and the lesson of Shabbos Shuvah mentioned above)
is further emphasized by this,
that the matter of the Beis HaMikdash and the service of the offerings
("and we will render [the] bulls [of] our lips")
in this time — especially on the day of Shabbos,
because then the main matter is prayer, which comes in place of the offerings,
and the general matter of Shabbos is similar to the general matter of the Beis HaMikdash,
as explained in many places,
and it is also understood simply.
And may it be His will that through this that Jews will perform their service in the aforementioned manner,
and through all of our deeds and service,
we should further hasten the inauguration of the third Beis HaMikdash,
which already stands built above 106,
and we only need to bring it down and reveal it below,
which can be immediately,
instantly and at once,
in a manner of "I will hasten it",
and we bring Jews to the Holy Land,
to Jerusalem,
to the third Beis HaMikdash in a manner of "with the clouds of heaven",
which is instantly and at once.
We only need to finish with the last small jugs,
and then immediately comes the true and complete redemption,
as it was by our father Yaakov,
that after he would have gathered the small jugs, immediately there would have been "and saviors shall ascend Mount Zion" 107.
And so too now — that "behold He stands behind our wall" 108,
and we only need to finish the last small things in exile,
the small jugs,
and then immediately comes the redemption,
in a manner of "immediately they are redeemed" 109,
"Today — if you hearken to His voice" 110.
He commanded to play a melody and said the maamar beginning "Shuvah Yisrael etc."
As usual, on studying a verse in the weekly portion with Rashi's commentary,
and in a manner that it should be understandable even for a five-year-old studying Scripture — even the questions that arise by a five-year-old studying Scripture,
are addressed in Rashi's commentary on the Torah.
For since Rashi himself gave the rule 111 that "I have come only for the plain meaning of Scripture",
it is necessary to say,
that Rashi's commentary is also for a five-year-old who studies Chumash according to its plain meaning,
without the matter of "a ten-year-old for Mishnah",
and certainly not "a fifteen-year-old for Gemara" 112.
And although in Rashi's commentary there are also matters from the other parts of the Torah,
and as we find several great books — both in quantity and in quality — from the true great ones of Israel,
who explain matters in Rashi's commentary according to halachah, remez, and derush,
until as his honor, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, said in the name of the old Rebbe 113 that in Rashi's commentary on the Torah there is "the wine of the Torah" and he explained that this means matters of the secrets of the Torah
(which is called wine 114),
and as we find in books which explain matters in Rashi's commentary on the Torah according to the secret,
it is not because they did not know, Heaven forbid, the plain meaning of Rashi
(according to the plain meaning of Scripture),
rather this is an additional matter in Rashi's commentary;
נאר דאס איז אן ענין נוסף אין פירוש רש"י;
its essence and beginning of Rashi's commentary is the plain meaning of Scripture.
In chapter 32
(and the entire portion of Haazinu is only one chapter)
verse 44 states:
"And Moshe came and spoke all the words of this song in the ears of the people — he and Hoshea bin Nun."
Rashi quotes the end of the verse "he and Hoshea bin Nun",
and explains:
"It was a Shabbos of a pair,
he took permission from this one and gave to that one, Moshe appointed for him an interpreter who would expound in his lifetime so that Israel would not say, 'In the lifetime of your teacher you had no right to lift your head.'" Then Rashi continues with a vav hachibur:
"And why is he called here Hoshea" — as we have already learned 115 that Moshe changed his name from Hoshea to Yehoshua,
and from then on — which was 38-39 years earlier — he is everywhere called Yehoshua,
should he here,
on this "Shabbos of a pair" when he was equal to Moshe,
certainly have been called Yehoshua
(not Hoshea)?
Rashi answers:
"To say that his pride did not swell, that although greatness was given to him, he humbled himself as at his beginning" before he was called Yehoshua.
Rashi took this explanation from the Gemara116,
the Sifri117 — but since Rashi does not say "our Sages expounded" or even "our Sages said", it is evident
that this explanation is the plain meaning of the words "he and Hoshea bin Nun";
אז דער פירוש איז דער פירוש הפשוט פון די ווערטער "הוא והושע בן נון";
it is not like the places where Rashi says that the explanation is taken from Chazal,
which proves that for that explanation one needs to come to support from Midrash etc.
וואס דאס באווייזט אז צו דעם פירוש דארף מען אנקומען צו א סיוע פון מדרש וכו';
In our case, however,
even though Rashi uses the same words of Chazal,
Rashi takes the explanation
(not from Chazal, but)
from the plain meaning of Scripture:
when one learns the verse with the words "he and Hoshea bin Nun" one must explain them "it was a Shabbat of Diuzgei etc."
It is perplexing:
from where is the compulsion in the plain meaning of Scripture,
from the words "he and Hoshea bin Nun",
to all these details that Rashi says in his commentary —
(a) that "it was a Shabbat of Diuzgei" — and "Diuzgei" means two pairs
(two couples),
i.e., that there are four people,
(b) that Yehoshua had an interpreter,
(c) that Moshe set this up for him
(Moshe set up for him),
(d) that this was "so that he would expound in his lifetime",
(e) and the reason for this — "so that Yisrael would not say, 'In the lifetime of your teacher you did not have permission to raise your head'",
Where do all these details stand in the words "he and Hoshea bin Nun"?!
Also, one must understand:
Why does Rashi explain the reason why "it calls him here Hoshea" in the same discourse beginning and in continuation of the matter of "Shabbat of Diuzgei etc." — and moreover with a vav hachibur
("and why etc.")?!
Seemingly, this is an entirely separate matter:
Suppose Rashi had not said that "Shabbat of Diuzgei etc. Moshe set up for him an interpreter etc." — would Rashi nevertheless have had to explain why "it calls him here Hoshea"?
One of the reasons why we chose to speak about this Rashi commentary is — because it follows what was discussed in the farbrengen of Shabbat Parshat
(Nitzavim)
Vayeilech118 regarding the Rashi commentary
(at the beginning of Parshat Vayeilech)
on "I can no longer go out and come in" — "I am not permitted, for permission was taken from me and given to Yehoshua",
and it was mentioned that there in Parshat Vayeilech Rashi does not bring down the matter of "it was a Shabbat of Diuzgei".
One must understand:
Since Rashi brings there that "permission was taken from him and given to Yehoshua" — similar to what he says in our parshah that "permission was taken from this one and given to that one" — why does he not bring there the other details that Rashi brings here,
that "it was a Shabbat of Diuzgei...
Moshe set up for him an interpreter etc."?
Because,
the order of study for a five-year-old is,
that one cannot rely on what will be learned later
(when the matter will appear a second time),
rather one must say all the details immediately the first time.
Granted, the third matter in Rashi:
"And why does it call him here Hoshea",
is a question that arises only in our parshah;
איז א קשיא וואס שטעלט זיך ערשט אין אונזער פרשה;
but the first two matters in Rashi — "it was a Shabbat of Diuzgei etc. Moshe set up for him an interpreter etc." — should he have brought them in Parshat Vayeilech?
The question is even greater:
The Gemara and Sifri — the source of these two matters in Rashi's commentary — indeed say this explanation on the verse "He called Yehoshua etc. Moshe and Yehoshua went and stood in the Tent of Meeting" which is in Parshat Vayeilech119.
So how can this be:
In the Gemara and Sifri, which explain according to the halachic method — where according to the method of derush and halachah it is sometimes correct to place a matter only when it is stated a second time — because of the fact that then a question of "redundancy" arises or because of a precise reading and change in the matter as it appears a second time — in our case, the matter is stated there for the first time
(in Parshat Vayeilech);
(אין פ' וילך);
And Rashi,
who explains the plain meaning of Scripture,
in which one must say everything immediately the first time — states the matter only in Parshat Haazinu!
We already once addressed this Rashi commentary — twelve years ago
(5731)
— but the explanation that was given then is not exactly according to the plain meaning
(and therefore there was the lengthy explanation).
They debated and argued about this, etc.
מ'האט זיך וועגן דעם גע'פלפול'ט און געדונגען וכו';
But the matter is,
that one forgets that one is connected with Rashi's commentary, which is according to the plain meaning. And therefore,
even though according to the halachah, etc., it works out differently, etc.,
according to the plain meaning, the matter is initially in a different manner. And as will be explained below.
Here is also the place to answer a matter that has been written and printed about recently,
and they debate it with a great commotion and seek to "split a hair",
and I also went along with it, etc.
Whereas,
if one had thought into this matter as it is simply,
one would have realized,
that the matter is initially in a different manner,
so that the question is fundamentally unfounded.
And this is in connection with the matter of writing a Sefer Torah,
— about which they asked120:
From the verse121 "And now, write for yourselves this song," we derive that "it is a positive commandment for every single Jewish man to write a Sefer Torah for himself"122 — and seemingly:
The command "And now, write for yourselves, etc." was said on the seventh of Adar,
the day of Moshe's passing<sup>123</sup>;
יום פטירת משה 123;
On the tenth of Nissan, the Jews crossed the Jordan124,
and in the intervening days, the Jews were occupied with the mourning for Moshe
(thirty days)
125 — so when did they have time to finish writing an entire Sefer Torah?
And especially since they would have needed a vast multitude of parchment and ink, etc.,
in order to write more than six hundred thousand Sifrei Torah.
And even though regarding the parchment and ink one can answer that the Jews prepared it beforehand,
as Rashi brings down126 that "Rabbi Tanchuma explained: Yaakov Avinu foresaw with ruach hakodesh that Israel would build the Mishkan in the desert, and he brought cedars to Egypt and planted them, and commanded his sons to take them with them when they left Egypt" —
But it remains incomprehensible:
When did the Jews have time to finish writing the Sifrei Torah?
And they wanted to answer127 that the Jews wrote the portions that Moshe told them throughout the entire time,
and consequently, they only had left to write the last sections of the book of Devarim.
To which the question is immediately raised128:
This answer can only be given according to the opinion129 that "the Torah was given scroll by scroll",
but not according to the opinion129 that "the Torah was given sealed".
And even according to the opinion "scroll by scroll" — the question remains:
How did the Jews sanctify the Names that were written before the command "And now, write for yourselves"? And further.
I waited the entire time,
that perhaps someone would realize that the question is fundamentally without basis.
And in any case, the "editorial board" of the journals,
whose purpose is to seek flaws, etc.,
because the one who wrote the matter is a party to the matter,
he does not always see the flaws,
therefore the "editorial board" must seek the flaws,
and point them out and correct them;
און מגי' זיין און פארריכטן;
but along with this, they must seek an answer to the questions —
the editorial board also did not realize this.
So the explanation of this is:
According to the plain meaning of Scripture, one is not compelled to say that the Jews finished writing the Sifrei Torah before the entry into the Land.
The Jews were indeed commanded "And now, write for yourselves this song"130,
but the actual fulfillment was only later,
when they received the possibility for it.
The Sefer Torah that Moshe Rabbeinu wrote and gave to the Levi'im to place in the Ark,
and regarding this, the thirteen Sifrei Torah that Moshe wrote — and even though Rashi does not bring this down,
it is, however, brought in the words of Chazal131,
— are connected with Moshe,
and consequently, they were completed in his lifetime,
But regarding what every Jew had to write a Sefer Torah for himself,
it is not stated anywhere that this was done immediately.
And consequently, the entire discussion falls away from the outset.
Regarding this, they took a stand on the matter of "Yom Tov of Rosh Hashanah that falls on Shabbat" where we do not blow the shofar because of the decree of Rabbah "lest one carry it in his hand, etc., and carry it four cubits in the public domain"132 — they once asked133:
Why was this decree not also decreed regarding eating a kezayit of matzah on the night of Pesach,
that when the first night of Pesach falls on Shabbat, one should not eat the kezayit of matzah lest one carry it four cubits?
And it was explained about this134,
based on what is explained in Chassidus135 the reason for why we do not blow shofar on Rosh HaShanah that falls on Shabbos,
that this is because Shabbos accomplishes the same matter that the shofar blast does,
and consequently, in such a fixed time,
one need not come to the blowing of the shofar.
However, regarding Pesach,
since Shabbos does not accomplish what matzah
(and the other matters of Pesach)
accomplish,
one must also in that fixed time eat the olive's bulk of matzah, etc.
They asked about this136:
That Shabbos accomplishes what the shofar blast needs to accomplish,
is because the Torah then says not to blow a shofar;
איז מצד דערויף וואס תורה הייסט דעמאלט ניט בלאזן קיין שופר;
if so,
let the Torah say that one should not eat the olive's bulk of matzah on the night of Pesach that falls on Shabbos,
and that itself would accomplish that one would not need to come to the eating of matzah?
And it is similar to what was discussed many times
(and also in the farbrengen of Erev Rosh HaShanah)
regarding the recitation of Tachanun,
that on the days when the Torah says not to recite Tachanun,
the matter is not lacking, G-d forbid,
rather then it is accomplished through the day itself—
And if so, let the Torah say regarding this, in our case,
that one should not eat the olive's bulk of matzah on the night of Pesach that falls on Shabbos,
and that itself would accomplish that one would not need to come to the eating of matzah?
But the entire question does not even arise from the outset:
That which is said, that Shabbos accomplishes what the shofar blast needs to accomplish,
is not the reason for it—the Torah's command not to blow the shofar
(that the Torah's command causes Shabbos to accomplish the drawing down that comes through the shofar blast)
—rather, Shabbos itself accomplishes it,
the Torah merely reveals that Shabbos has within it this matter, that it accomplishes the same matter as the shofar blast,
—and consequently, one then need not blow a shofar.
And consequently, there is no place to ask that the Torah should declare that on Shabbos one should not eat the olive's bulk of matzah and through this the matter of eating matzah should be accomplished—because Shabbos does not have the matter of matzah, etc.
What the error is, from the fact that two matters were mixed together—that which the Torah accomplishes a matter,
and that which the Torah reveals a matter.
It is similar to the two modes that exist regarding signs:
A) Signs which are merely revealing a matter,
like the signs of a lost object—it is not that the signs cause the item to become his—it does not even arise—rather they merely reveal who lost the item.
B) Signs that accomplish a matter.
And it is similar to the two opinions137 regarding the signs of kosher animals—chewing the cud and having split hooves—whether they are merely revealing that this is a kosher animal,
or the signs themselves cause it to be a kosher animal.
And the practical difference138:
If an animal is born from a non-kosher animal but it has the signs of chewing the cud and having split hooves;
אויב עס ווערט געבארן א בהמה פון א בהמה טמאה אבער עס האט די סימנים פון מעלי גרה ומפריסי פרסה;
if the signs cause the animal to be kosher,
it is a kosher animal;
איז עס א בהמה טהורה;
but if the signs are only a matter of clarification—it is a non-kosher animal.
And similarly, there are two types regarding testimony139:
A) Witnesses of clarification,
like testimony that testifies that a field belongs to so-and-so,
it is not that their testimony causes the field to belong to him—the field became his through his inheriting it or buying it,
and the witnesses merely reveal that it is his field.
B) Testimony that accomplishes a matter. As the later authorities140 explain,
that witnesses of betrothal are witnesses of effectuation—they accomplish the betrothal. When one betroths a woman without witnesses,
"we are not concerned for his betrothal"141,
because without witnesses of betrothal there is no betrothal.
And similarly in our matter:
It is not that the Torah causes Shabbos to accomplish the matter of the shofar blast,
rather the Torah merely reveals that Shabbos is the matter of delight,
and consequently it accomplishes the matter of the shofar blast;
ובמילא טוט זי אויף דעם ענין פון תק"ש;
however, the matter of Pesach—is not present in Shabbos.
Similarly, regarding Rashi's commentary on "he and Hoshea bin Nun":
It was indeed discussed about this twelve years ago,
but when one contemplates how the matter is according to the simple meaning,
it is inherently understood from the outset.
Here the commotion immediately begins:
Because one spoke once in a different manner,
how can one now say otherwise?
But,
as spoken several times,
additional explanations can still come in this matter. Why does one not allow,
that over the course of twelve years no more understanding in learning has come to me...
And it is not because I consider myself a great humble person,
but as I earlier
(section thirty)
prefaced,
that one finds books of the true great ones of Israel,
who explained Rashi's commentary on the Torah according to the way of halachah and homiletics etc.;
וואס האבן מפרש געווען פירוש רש"י על התורה ע"ד ההלכה והדרוש כו';
And this applies to our matter:
the explanation that was spoken twelve years ago is not according to its literal meaning exactly;
דער ביאור וואס ס'האט זיך גערעדט מיט צוועלף יאר צוריק איז ניט לפי פשוטו ממש;
The explanation of Rashi's commentary according to its literal meaning,
is in a different manner,
and in a manner that it is understandable from the outset to comprehend five for the scriptural verse,
and as will be explained below.
In connection with the notes of Father on the Zohar of our Torah portion,
it is because this Shabbat is "from which all days are blessed" - the days of the coming week,
including the day of passing-hillula of the Rebbe Maharash,
on "one"
(numerical value thirteen)
of Tishrei which this year becomes one hundred years from his passing-hillula - we will stop on a note in our Torah portion that speaks about the passing-hillula of Rashbi
(as recounted at length in the Zohar of our Torah portion).
In the Zohar of our Torah portion it states that Rashbi said about himself in connection with his passing,
"In Him my soul shall glory,
and see that my soul cleaves in Him, clings in Him, attaches in Him and I have striven etc."
Father stands on this in his notes and explains,
that "three expressions,
cleaves,
clings,
attaches,
correspond to the three lines":
"cleaves" is in the aspect of kindness,
Abraham,
"clings in the left line,
might fire,
and it clings in fire",
Isaac,
and "attaches is in the middle line Tiferet,
for there is actual attachment,
the body of unity which is through Jacob Tiferet",
whose "bed was perfect" etc.
And afterwards he says a fourth expression "and I have striven",
which "corresponds to Malchut",
the Congregation of Israel.
He does not, however, explain how this is in the service of man,
in action which is the main thing,
relying that one will understand it on his own. And as will be explained below.
All these matters,
our Torah portion
(parshas Haazinu),
Rashbi and the Rebbe Maharash have a connection between themselves - in all of them the matter of "from the outset over" is emphasized
(as the well-known saying of the Rebbe Maharash),
and in common parlance - a Baal Shem-like conduct.
Rashbi was "accustomed to miracles",
which a conduct in a miraculous manner is simply what the world calls a "Baal Shem-like conduct".
As for the Rebbe Maharash, his conduct was in the manner of "from the outset over"
(as his saying),
and as is known that with him there was a Baal Shem-like conduct.
- And this is also the content of "Give ear, O heavens..
and hear, O earth"
(as spoken in the previous gathering):
The order of the world is from the light to the heavy,
that first comes earth and then heaven. And as the prophet Isaiah said "Hear, O heavens and give ear, O earth" - by heavens the term hearing which indicates distance,
and by earth the term giving ear,
which indicates closeness - because Isaiah was "distant from the heavens" and "close to the earth",
as this is according to the usual order of the world;
ווי דאס איז ע"ד הרגיל בסדר העולם;
However, parshas Haazinu begins
(as Moses our teacher says)
"Give ear, O heavens..
and hear, O earth",
by heavens the term giving ear,
closeness,
and by earth the term hearing,
distance - because Moses our teacher was "close to the heavens" and "distant from the earth" - from the outset over,
immediately heavens in closeness,
and then earth which is distant.
And thus one also sees the matter of from the outset over in the second verse of parshas Haazinu "My doctrine shall drop as the rain, my speech shall flow as the dew"
(as spoken recently):
In the discourses of parshas Haazinu one brings on this verse the saying of our sages of blessed memory that "the Congregation of Israel asked improperly..
and He shall come as rain to us",
and "the Holy One, blessed be He, answered her properly" - "I shall be as dew to Israel".
And one explains that the difference between rain
(rain)
and dew is:
rain is connected with the service from below,
rain comes through that which "a mist ascends from the earth";
גשם ווערט דורך דעם וואס "אד יעלה מן הארץ" 157;
however, dew is drawn from above,
therefore "dew is not withheld".
And since a Jew stands higher than all matters,
therefore, when he prays for rain
(rain)
this is "not proper,"
it does not fit! Rather, it must be "Ah, like dew to Israel" - from the outset, above,
like dew that is drawn from above,
above,
and entirely from the outset because one is above.
This also shows the concept of "from the outset, above" in the portion Shelach - in the portion Vezot Haberachah:
On the verse
(in the portion Vezot Haberachah)
"Until the last sea," our sages say, "Do not read 'the last sea' but rather 'the last day,'
the Holy One, blessed be He, showed him all the events that are destined to occur to Israel until the dead are revived." From this it is also understood that the blessing of Moses,
"And this is the blessing with which Moses blessed, etc." was a blessing "until the last day,"
until the end of all generations.
One must understand:
What relevance did it have in the time of Moses that which happens in the end of days,
"until the last day"? When one blesses Jews, the blessing is surely regarding the specific time in which one finds oneself,
and afterward, when another time arrives,
another generation,
another era - a blessing is needed for that generation,
for that era - so what does it mean that the blessing of Moses was "until the last day"?!
Rather, the answer to this is that here there was a conduct in the manner of "from the outset, above,"
where one takes everything at once,
all matters until the end of all generations,
"until the last day"!
The lesson from all the above in practical deed:
Standing in this Shabbat that is blessed on the 13th of Tishrei,
the day of the hillula-hishtalkut of the Rebbe Maharash,
when then "all the toil of man that his soul toiled in his life" is elevated above until its root,
and from there it is drawn down to the lowest level,
and especially in this year that it is one hundred years from the year of his histalkut,
for one hundred years is a special perfection,
For the concept of the Rebbe Maharash is "from the outset, above,"
And especially since this Shabbat
(which is blessed on the day of his histalkut)
is Shabbat of the portion Haazinu,
which also emphasizes the concept of "from the outset, above" -
Therefore, the Rebbe Maharash arouses and gives every Jew the lesson and strength to conduct themselves in a manner of "from the outset, above."
And just as the Rebbe Maharash gives a lesson and strength regarding how the conduct of a Jew should be,
so too does he give a lesson and strength in the study of Torah -
That in addition to the fact that each one has a letter in the Torah,
and studies Torah,
the study of Torah should be in a manner that it includes and within it is intermingled all parts of the Torah together,
pshat, remez, drush, and sod.
As we see in the Torah of the Rebbe Maharash,
that with him all parts of the Torah are intermingled together.
This is also found with the Tzemach Tzedek
(as discussed many times).
It is not a matter of making distinctions between the great luminaries - but in a matter that is relevant to practical deed in the service of a Jew,
one may do so
(as discussed many times).
One sees in practice a difference between the Torah of the Tzemach Tzedek and the Rebbe Maharash and the Torah of other Nesiim of Chassidus Chabad,
that with the Tzemach Tzedek and the Rebbe Maharash one finds intermingled nigleh with chassidus and all parts of the Torah,
unlike in the Torah of the other Nesiim.
In the chassidus of the Alter Rebbe one finds little or nothing of nigleh.
And all the more so with the Mitteler Rebbe
(who is lengthy in explanations in chassidus?).
And this is also with the Rebbe N"a and with K"k M"a Admo"r Nasi Doreinu. They bring down sayings of our sages,
but not more;
אבער ניט מערער;
Unlike in the chassidus of the Tzemach Tzedek and the Rebbe Maharash, one sees that there is intermingled from all parts of the Torah together,
Mikra,
Mishnah,
Kabbalah,
chassidus, etc.
This itself is also a Baal Shem Tov concept.
And actually, one sees this more with the Rebbe Maharash than with the Tzemach Tzedek:
For with the Tzemach Tzedek, not all the maamarim are in the aforementioned manner,
intermingled from all parts of the Torah.
From this one has the lesson and the giving of strength - regarding how the study of Torah should be for every Jew - that it should be in a manner that within it is intermingled all parts of the Torah together,
Mikra,
Mishnah,
nigleh,
chassidus,
Kabbalah, etc., pshat, remez,
drush, and sod.
And even if one claims that in a previous gilgul he studied a certain part of the Torah,
consequently he does not need to study it in this gilgul
(ostensibly) -
Firstly:
Who knows what was done with him in a previous gilgul.
And even if he does know - in these days there is no practical difference,
because Mashiach comes immediately in this world,
"Behold, He stands behind our wall",
and consequently one must immediately grab and learn all parts of the Torah,
there is no more time to wait for anything;
ס'איז מער ניטא קיין צייט אויף וואס צו ווארטן;
And one must also immediately open up in all worlds that they should be ready for this "to perfect the world through the kingdom of the Almighty" at the coming of Mashiach our righteous one
(which will be immediately)
- which one opens up in the worlds through the matter of the Torah,
because He looked into the Torah and created the world,
and in order to open up in all four worlds, plain meaning, allusion,
homiletic interpretation and secret - therefore one now urges,
when Mashiach is coming very soon,
to learn all parts of the Torah.
And it can be said that this is also the reason why the Rebbe, my teacher and father-in-law, the Admor, insisted that there should be the study of the Alef-Beis,
and together with this also the study of the wellsprings,
secrets and secrets of secrets of the Torah,
and to learn it with tranquility etc. -
Because it was the time immediately before the redemption as one sees all the signs of the redemption tangibly,
and one sees the state of double and multiplied darkness,
and especially the very last events,
consequently this compels that very soon comes the ascent and redemption from this darkness,
As is known the parable that the Rebbe, my teacher and father-in-law, gave about a revolving wheel,
that when the wheel reaches the lowest point it can reach,
it can only be elevated higher;
קען ער נאר נתעלה ווערן העכער;
when it finds itself at its midpoint,
one can turn it either down,
or up. When it finds itself however at its lowest point,
then however one turns it - it is an ascent,
Consequently when one sees the double and multiplied darkness this compels that the redemption must already come immediately -
Therefore he insisted that the study of the Torah should be in all manners and in all parts, plain meaning
(Alef-Beis)
together with secrets of secrets,
in order to prepare all these worlds for this "to perfect the world through the kingdom of the Almighty".
And as the Rebbe, my teacher and father-in-law, the Admor, said many times that the redemption comes immediately and at once,
"Behold, He stands behind our wall",
and prepare oneself to stand in the parade before the King of kings, the Holy One, blessed be He,
which each one receives,
And one goes immediately all together to the Holy Land,
and there specifically to Jerusalem the holy city,
and there specifically - to the third Holy Temple,
"the Sanctuary, O Lord, which Your hands have established",
Speedily in our days, literally, and with joy and a good heart.
The explanation in Rashi's commentary:
Rashi focuses on the words,
because the question that Rashi is bothered by here in the verse is –
Why does the verse say the words "he and Hoshea bin Nun"? Seemingly these words are superfluous –
One understands by itself that Hoshea bin Nun was there,
because Moses went to say the song to all the Jews,
and especially since "his attendant Joshua bin Nun etc. would not depart from the tent" –
So what does the verse innovate by saying "he and Hoshea bin Nun"?
It is not at all comparable to Parshat Vayelech,
where it is mentioned
(several times)
that Moses called Joshua –
because there the verse itself relates that this was because at that time they had already told Joshua several things:
"Be strong and courageous, for you shall bring this people etc." and afterwards the Almighty told him "for you shall bring the children of Israel etc.",
it is understandable why Joshua is singled out.
But in our portion one does not find any speech that would have a connection specifically to Joshua –
So what is the emphasis in the verse "he and Hoshea bin Nun"?
To this Rashi answers "It was a day of rest from the burden etc." That the verse comes to teach that on that day Joshua completely equaled himself to Moses;
אויף דעם ענטפערט רש"י "שבת של דיוזגי היתה כו'" 170. אז דער פסוק קומט לערנען אז אין יענעם טאג האט זיך יהושע אינגאנצן אויסגעגליכן מיט משה'ן;
and since one does not find in the later verses any special matter regarding Joshua –
therefore Rashi teaches,
that the "he and Hoshea bin Nun" refers to the "and He spoke" of the verse itself.
The verse states: "And Moses came and spoke all the words of this song in the ears of the people –
he and Hoshea the son of Nun":
Not only did Moses speak "all the words of this song in the ears of the people,"
but "
(he)
and Hoshea the son of Nun" –
also Joshua
(afterward)
spoke the song "in the ears of the people."
And this is also what Rashi continues: "Moses appointed for him an interpreter who would expound during his lifetime":
By Moses we find,
that he spoke with the Jews through an interpreter,
as it is stated: "And Aaron your brother shall be your prophet,"
and regarding this, Rashi later brings down the "order of Mishnah" how Moses our teacher taught the Jews,
that after Moses
(himself)
taught Aaron etc.
(in total –
four times),
then Aaron taught all the people;
האט דערנאך אהרן געלערנט מיט כל העם;
And since Joshua spoke to the Jews on that day exactly like Moses –
"he and Hoshea the son of Nun" –
this compels us to say,
that also Joshua spoke to the Jews through an interpreter.
And based on this, the precision of Rashi "It was a Shabbat of Diuzge" will be understood –
that "Diuzge" means
(as above)
two pairs,
which together is four people –
because both Moses and Joshua had an interpreter
(together –
four people).
In this, Rashi is precise that "Moses appointed for him an interpreter" –
because everything that Joshua had, he received from Moses. As we learned in the previous portion that Moses told him: "Be strong and courageous, for you shall bring this people,"
and regarding this, it is concerning all his matters,
that everything he received from Moses. From this it is understandable also in our matter,
that Moses set up for him an interpreter.
According to the above, it is also answered why Rashi does not bring the matter of "It was a Shabbat of Diuzge etc. he appointed for him an interpreter etc." earlier in Parshat Vayelech –
Because the necessity for this matter,
that Joshua spoke to the Jews exactly like Moses,
is specifically from our verse: "And he spoke etc. he and Hoshea the son of Nun";
איז דוקא פון אונזער פסוק "וידבר גו' הוא והושע בן נון";
But in Parshat Vayelech there is no necessity in the simple meaning of the verse for this –
there Joshua is mentioned

to tell him "Be strong and courageous etc."
(as above),
but not,
that at that very time,
he already became equal to Moses.
It remains, however, not understood:
If so,
why does Rashi bring down there
(in Parshat Vayelech)
that "The authority was taken from me
(from Moses)
and given to Joshua" –
from which it is implied,
that already from then the authority passed to Joshua?
Rashi already warned about this there in its place:
Immediately after Rashi's commentary on "I can no longer go out and come in,"
that "I am not permitted, for the authority was taken from me and given to Joshua" –
Rashi continues:
"And Hashem said to me –
this is the explanation of 'I can no longer go out and come in,'
because Hashem said to me,"
and the continuation of the verse is "
(And Hashem said to me)
You shall not cross this Jordan";
לא תעבור את הירדן הזה";
that is, that what "I can no longer go out and come in" –
"I am not permitted, for the authority was taken from me and given to Joshua" –
is "because Hashem said to me: You shall not cross this Jordan"...
From this itself it is understandable,
that the authority given to Joshua is not because of the present time,
that he should already receive the "authority" to speak to the Jews immediately on that same day,
but it begins only after the death of Moses.
But in our verse –
"And he spoke etc. he and Hoshea the son of Nun" –
it is revealed that "It was a Shabbat of Diuzge etc. Moses appointed for Joshua an interpreter who would expound during his lifetime."
There is no difficulty why the Gemara brings the matter of "Shabbat of Diuzge" on the verse in Parshat Vayelech
(as above),
because:
(a) The Gemara is not to teach the verses according to the simple meaning of the verse,
but the Gemara brings this in continuation of other matters related to Moses our teacher that occurred on that same day,
(b) And furthermore:
After the verse in Haazinu says that Joshua received the "authority" to speak to the Jews on that same day exactly like Moses –
this reveals,
that also in Parshat Vayelech the interpretation is likewise;
אז אויך פ' וילך איז אויך אזוי דער פשט;
that what was given to Joshua "the authority" (172a) which is indeed on the same day as the events of Parshat Haazinu –
is not only because of the time after the death of Moses,
but it was actualized immediately on that same day.
And therefore:
In the Gemara –
which a "fifteen-year-old for Gemara" has already learned Parshat Haazinu, –
one can say the matter of "It was a Shabbat of Diuzge" already on the verse of Parshat Vayelech;
קען מען זאגן דעם ענין פון "שבת של דיוזגי היתה" שוין אויפן פסוק דפ' וילך;
However, Rashi,
who comes to teach the verses in order,
according to the plain meaning of the text,
needs to bring this matter only in chapter Haazinu,
because only from the verse "he and Hoshea bin Nun" is there a proof that "the Shabbat of Diuzgei was."
Nevertheless, it is not understandable:
Since the verse in chapter Vayelech says that "I can no longer go out and come in
(according to Rashi)
and the Lord said to me, 'You shall not cross this Jordan'" –
then Joshua was given the "authority" only because "you shall not cross this Jordan"
(for the time after the death of Moses) –
then why did Joshua already speak with the Jews during the lifetime of Moses
("that he should expound during his lifetime")?
Therefore Rashi must add the reason –
"so that they should not say, 'During the lifetime of your master you had no right to lift your head'":
The entire intention of "Diuzgei" –
that he should expound during his lifetime –
was only to safeguard the time after the passing of Moses:
so that the Jews would then obey Joshua and not say "during the lifetime of your master you had no right to lift your head,"
he had to expound to the Jews during the lifetime of Moses.
Based on this, however, it becomes difficult:
Since the entire purpose of Joshua expounding during the lifetime of Moses is to magnify him in the eyes of the Jews,
then –
איז –
"why does it call him here Hoshea"?!
The yud of Joshua indeed indicates the greatness that was given to him –
"Y-ah shall save you from the counsel of the spies,"
and as it indeed was afterward in practice,
that even though the ten spies spoke in one manner,
he
(together with Caleb)
opposed all of them and spoke the opposite;
זיך קעגנגעשטעלט זיי אלעמען און געזאגט פארקערט;
So if one wishes to bring out the greatness of Joshua,
he should have specifically been called "Joshua" –
"why does it call him here Hoshea"?
Rashi answers –
"to say that his mind did not become haughty over him, that even though greatness was given to him, he humbled himself as at his beginning":
That which "it calls him here Hoshea" is not the action of Moses –
Moses,
on the contrary,
sought to magnify him –
rather, this was done by Joshua,
through the fact that "he humbled himself";
דורך דעם וואס "השפיל עצמו";
When Joshua saw that "greatness was given to him,"
he could not content himself with his humility until now –
because when a matter of greatness comes, one cannot be certain, etc.;
ווארום וויבאלד עס קומט צו נאך אן ענין של גדלות קען מען ניט זיין זיכער כו';
rather, he had to add in his lowliness,
to ensure that it should not become "his mind became haughty over him." And consequently –
"he humbled himself as at his beginning."
And therefore specifically here it calls him Hoshea:
At other times it is not so strongly relevant to guard oneself so much;
אין אנדערע זמנים איז ניט אזוי שטארק נוגע צו באווארענען זיך כ"כ;
specifically when "greatness was given to him" did he need to guard himself with an addition of a matter of lowliness.
From this there is also a lesson in the service of the Lord:
One must guard oneself that it should be "his mind did not become haughty over him":
One may think to himself:
I am an emissary of the Rebbe the Nasi,
learned in Tomchei Temimim,
knowledgeable in several maamarim,
and I am occupied with the spreading of the wellsprings and the campaigns,
and in addition
(he says to himself)
the Almighty has blessed me with sons and sons of sons occupied with Torah and mitzvot;
האט מיר דער אויבערשטער געבענטשט מיט בנים ובני בנים עוסקים בתורה ומצוותי';
He indeed knows that it is not, heaven forbid, "my power and the might of my hand has made me this wealth,"
rather this is all the blessing of the Holy One, blessed be He,
"the blessing of the Lord, it enriches" –
but nevertheless,
the Almighty
(specifically)
blessed him;
געבענטשט;
so it is a sign that he
(specifically)
is worthy of the blessing.
And consequently he may not belittle the blessing of the Holy One, blessed be He, who has chosen him,
from the entire world,
to give the blessing!
For this there is the lesson,
that specifically because "greatness was given to him,"
one must first guard oneself that "his mind did not become haughty over him."
Surely every Jew receives all good,
a sealing and a good final sealing in all the wishes of his heart. And as the Gemara says,
that if only one is a son of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, then "even if you do for them like the feast of Solomon in his time, you have not fulfilled your obligation toward them."
There is indeed an advice,
when one stipulates beforehand a condition that one will give less –
but this depends on both sides,
both must agree to the condition;
ביידע דארפן מסכים זיין אויף דעם תנאי;
and Jews indeed want all good,
and consequently they receive children, life, and ample sustenance. If not in their own merit,
then in the merit that he is a son of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob,
the merit of the fathers –
but nevertheless, it comes to him.
And as the Alter Rebbe says,
that what-now Nebuchadnezzar –
"Because he walked three steps in honor of the Holy One, blessed be He –
they decreed for him kingship over the entire world and for his descendants after him until three generations."
– which is completely beyond comparison:
With Nebuchadnezzar there was no great effort –
he merely walked three steps;
ער איז בלויז געגאנגען ג' פסיעות;
and for that he received
(not simply children, life, and sustenance,
but a matter beyond comparison to that –)
"kingship over the world and for his descendants after him until three generations" –
for each step,
a generation of kingship,
then all the more so a Jew,
of whom "there is no person from Israel whom the Place has not honored with this,"
and all the more so that "they are full of mitzvot like a pomegranate,"
and on the contrary –
he does much more than this for the Most High,
then surely he deserves incomparably more than "kingship over the entire world...
until three generations,"
and certainly he receives children, life, and sustenance as mentioned above,
in everything that he needs.
But nevertheless,
he should not become "haughty in spirit,"
rather he must be in a state of self-nullification.
And on the contrary –
specifically through this self-nullification one becomes a vessel to receive greatness.
And as it is with Joshua,
who on that day became equal to Moses –
this was expressed first and foremost in that "he humbled himself as at the beginning":
Just like Moses,
whose greatness is in that "the man Moses was very humble, more than any person upon the face of the earth";
איז דאך מעלתו אין דעם וואס "והאיש משה עניו מאוד מכל האדם אשר על פני האדמה" 179;
he indeed knew all his virtues,
but along with this he was "very humble, more than any person, etc.,"
so too with Joshua,
the servant of Moses,
that on that day he became equal to Moses in the matter of self-nullification,
so that "even though greatness was given to him, he humbled himself as at the beginning."
And on the contrary:
specifically through the fact that he possessed this self-nullification,
in the likeness of the "very humble" of Moses,
he received from Moses the greatness to be able to speak with the entire people.
For simply,
the words "he and Hoshea the son of Nun" refer not only to "he spoke all the words of this song, etc.,"
but also to "Moses came,"
that is, that the "Moses came" was in a manner of "he and Hoshea the son of Nun" –
Joshua equal to Moses,
and afterward there was the "he spoke...
he and Hoshea the son of Nun":
The inner explanation of this is:
Through the fact that Joshua came with Moses –
he possessed the self-nullification in the likeness of the self-nullification and humility of Moses –
he received the greatness of Moses to be able afterward to speak with Jews
("he spoke")
just like Moses.
And so it is in our matter:
Specifically through being in a state of self-nullification –
"my spirit is not haughty" –
this is the vessel to receive even more blessings
(and greatness),
and it is only good for Israel,
and he finds life all the days. And one receives a good writing and sealing,
written and sealed immediately for life in the book of the completely righteous,
as discussed earlier,
that in the verse it only says "righteous,"
and the Oral Torah adds to this "completely righteous,"
that the Most High fulfills the wishes of the heart of every Jew,
until the most essential matter –
the wishes of his heart of every Jew,
for the complete redemption,
and in a manner of "may our eyes behold."
And this should be immediately and at once,
in the language of the Rambam –
"immediately they are redeemed,"
and especially since we stand in the time of the supernal will of Shabbat Shuvah.
And the question of how can Mashiach come on the day of Shabbat,
it is after all a question of boundaries, etc. –
even if this will be a question,
the Tishbite will resolve difficulties and problems
(as discussed multiple times).
And the main point,
that Mashiach should come and every Jew and all Jews should go out from exile,
together with the Divine Presence in exile,
and go into the true and complete redemption,
and speedily in our days, literally.
The explanation in the Zohar of our portion,
and with an introduction:
Everything is indeed with Divine providence –
one must understand:
Since the entire lengthy narrative about the passing of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai is in the Zohar of Parshat Haazinu,
there must be a connection between the time when we read Parshat Haazinu and the passing of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai,
And in particular according to the Torah of the Alter Rebbe, then one must live with the time,
with the weekly portion that one learns at that time,
which is also connected to the Zohar of the weekly portion,
because one learns
(for example)
the Zohar of Parshat Haazinu simply in the week when one learns in Torah Parshat Haazinu –
there must be a connection between the time and that which is discussed in the Zohar of Parshat Haazinu,
regarding the histalkut of Rashbi.
And seemingly:
The histalkut of Rashbi is on Lag BaOmer,
but Parshat Haazinu never occurs during the time of Lag BaOmer,
rather specifically during the Ten Days of Repentance or during the days between Yom Kippur and the festival of Sukkot –
so why is the entire lengthy account of the histalkut of Rashbi told specifically in the Zohar of Parshat Haazinu?!
The explanation of this will be understood based on what was discussed above regarding the matter of “and we will render the words of our lips as bulls.”
In the time of the Temple, one needed to have the offering of sacrifices in actuality. However, when one is in a situation where one cannot offer sacrifices,
in the time of exile,
the Torah gives advice for this,
that “and we will render the words of our lips as bulls.”
In this itself, however, there are two modes:
(a) Our Sages of blessed memory say that “whoever engages in the study of the Torah of the burnt offering, it is as if he has offered a burnt offering.”
(b) And sometimes one says even more,
that not only can one accomplish “as if” like the offering of sacrifices,
but rather the very same matter,
without an “as if” –
as our Sages of blessed memory said, prayers were instituted in place of sacrifices,
without an “as if.”
And regarding this it is also stated concerning Selichot,
that “King David knew that the Holy Temple would be destroyed and the sacrifices would be nullified, etc., and King David was distressed for Israel, with what would atonement be made for their sins, and the Holy One, blessed be He, said to David, etc., ‘Let them stand before Me as one united group and confess, etc., and say before Me the order of Selichah, and I will answer them,’”
(as has already been printed).
Which is literally in place of sacrifices,
without an “as if.”
Every matter is reflected in halachah,
so too this matter:
The law is that a convert who converts “requires circumcision, immersion, and the presentation of a sacrifice,”
and specifically through this he becomes a complete convert.
“In the present time
(when the Holy Temple does not exist)
when there is no sacrifice, he requires circumcision and immersion,” and he becomes a convert without bringing a sacrifice,
even though this
(the offering of the sacrifice by the convert)
is a commandment that the convert must fulfill,
and a condition in conversion is that the convert accepts upon himself the yoke of commandments.
From this one sees that in the present time one can accomplish completely without the offering of the sacrifice that which the offering of the sacrifice accomplished in the time of the Temple.
And it can be said that this is the explanation of why sometimes one says only that “whoever engages in the study of the Torah of the burnt offering, it is as if he has offered a burnt offering,”
and sometimes that one accomplishes the matter completely
(without an “as if”).
(This passage is not clear.)
Based on this, it can also be said regarding the connection of the time of
(the Zohar of)
Parshat Haazinu with the histalkut of Rashbi
(which the Zohar of Parshat Haazinu discusses):
The histalkut of Rashbi
(which was on Lag BaOmer)
is connected with many elevations,
including also that then is revealed the “One who works salvations in the midst of the earth” through all the toil that Rashbi toiled in his life
(as explained in Iggeret HaKodesh).
Until it is known that on Lag BaOmer the middle Rebbe would perform miracles, etc. –
What does one do when one needs to attain the elevations connected with the histalkut of Rashbi at another time when it is not Lag BaOmer?
For this the advice is that one should engage in the Torah that discusses the histalkut of Rashbi,
which then is in the manner of “as if he has offered a burnt offering,”
Which in general, one of the essential matters of Rashbi
(which is drawn forth in the manner of “One who works salvations in the midst of the earth” at the time of his histalkut)
is –
איז –
that which Rashbi said about himself, “I can exempt the entire world from judgment.”
For which one needs specifically to attain at the time when one reads Parshat Haazinu:
Parshat Haazinu is always read either during the Ten Days of Repentance,
or during the four days between Yom Kippur and the festival of Sukkot,
when one must first do teshuvah
(as per the saying of the Rebbe of blessed memory,
as above).
For when is there a more important time than this time to attain the “I can exempt the entire world from judgment.”
Therefore,
in order to effect the elevation connected with the passing of Rashbi,
that "I am able to exempt the entire world from judgment,"
at this time
(of the Ten Days of Repentance or during the four days between Yom Kippur and Sukkot) –
one then studies Torah,
in the Zohar of Parshat Haazinu
(which is studied at this time),
about the passing of Rashbi.
And from this it is understood why specifically in the Zohar of Parshat Haazinu it speaks at length about the passing of Rashbi.
And since Rashbi is the one who exempts the entire world from judgment
(which is aroused when one studies Torah (in the Zohar) about the passing of Rashbi),
it is understood that he does it in perfection,
not only in a manner that there should not be any punishment, Heaven forbid,
but that the entire matter of judgment is nullified,
For Rashbi is indeed "the righteous one, foundation of the world," –
the ultimate good,
so when he says "I am able to exempt the entire world from judgment," one cannot say that he exempts the entire world from judgment not in ultimate perfection,
and a trace of that judgment remains, Heaven forbid, –
less than what would have been if the judgment had existed,
for the judgment completely erases the undesirable matter,
and no trace of it remains –
but certainly Rashbi exempts the entire world from judgment in ultimate perfection,
no trace of it remains. And on the contrary –
there is even an additional elevation because Rashbi is the one who brings it about.
And it is similar to what is explained regarding Rosh Hashanah that falls on Shabbat, when we do not blow the shofar,
that the matters that the shofar blowing accomplishes are not lacking at all,
because Shabbat itself brings about the matter.
And on the contrary –
when Shabbat itself accomplishes the matter that the shofar blowing accomplishes in other years,
it is with an even higher elevation –
because when there is actual shofar blowing by a person, it is not necessarily that it is accomplished in perfection,
for not every mind can bear to concentrate on all the intentions and fulfill the commandment in the utmost beauty and so forth;
ווארום לאו כל מוחא סביל דא צו מכוון זיין אלע כוונות און מקיים זיין די מצוה בתכלית ההידור וכו';
however, when Shabbat accomplishes it by itself,
it is certainly accomplished in a manner of beauty from beauty,
and from the outset,
and from the outset from the outset and so forth.
And from this that Rashbi says "I am able to exempt the entire world from judgment," it is also understood,
that he exempts in ultimate perfection from judgment in all levels and in all worlds where the matter of judgment exists
(even in the most subtle),
as is known that the matter of judgment exists in all levels,
one above the other. And accordingly, there must be exemption from judgment in every single level.
And it is similar to what was discussed earlier regarding the matter of "Return, O Israel, unto the Lord your God," that in this there are many levels, one above the other.
Until even among the righteous there is the matter of judgment in subtlety,
as he relates in Pri Etz Chaim that "once my teacher, of blessed memory, saw the soul of a righteous, great sage who was being judged when they wished to elevate him to the great, supernal level, and they punished him because once he was concentrating on the holiness of Uva Letzion, saying 'no harm came to the void, nor was it born for confusion,' and then through that concentration he forgot and diverted his mind from the tefillin, etc.,"
which is the matter of judgment in subtlety.
And all the more so when it speaks about ascending from one state and condition to a state and condition higher than this,
for which one must come to immersion in the river of fire between these states and conditions,
or to pass through a pillar in between and so forth,
which are all matters of judgment as they are in subtlety above.
And since Rashbi says that "I am able to exempt the entire world from judgment," it is understood that he exempts all judgments in all levels,
also in the highest levels.
And the power for this he has from the fact that he stands above all these levels
(and especially at the time of his passing,
about which it speaks in the Zohar of Parshat Haazinu) –
"My soul cleaves to Him, shines in Him, attaches to Him, and strives, etc.,"
the soul of Rashbi is connected with Essence and Being. Until it is stated in another place that "Who is the face of the Lord God –
this is Rashbi,"
and "I am a sign in the world,"
Rashbi is more than a sign for Essence and Being,
and it is known what is stated in the name of the old Rebbe that by Rashbi there was no destruction –
therefore,
standing connected with Essence and Being,
above all matters,
Rashbi can effect the "I am able to exempt the entire world from judgment,"
judgment in all levels and in all worlds until above the highest.
And based on this, it is understood why he uses here in the Zohar all these four expressions,
"achida,
lahita,
itdabkat,
ishtadelut",
which correspond to ChaGa"T and Malchut,
which include within themselves all levels –
because Rashb"i, specifically at the time of his passing
(when regarding him it is "my soul is achida etc.")
draws down the exemption of the entire world from judgment in all levels and in all worlds,
which are all included in ChaGa"T and Malchut.
And one must connect the above discussion, that Rashb"i accomplished, with the fact that in most Chassidic discourses of Lag BaOmer, the discussion is about the accomplishment of Rashb"i regarding others in the matter of drawing down rains here below:
Others drew down rains through the matter of prayer,
at which time one stands below and prays that rains should be drawn down from above. And therefore, even after one has prayed for this, one must subsequently pray that the rains be drawn down in a desirable manner etc.
It is always connected with exertion;
ס'איז אלץ פארבונדן מיט א טירחא;
Not so Rashb"i,
whose essence was "his Torah was his craft",
drew down rains through the matter of Torah,
at which time he stands above the entire matter of rains,
he stands beyond,
and is the master over it,
therefore, immediately through the utterance of Torah,
without any additional effort and exertion, rains are drawn down,
"and I will give your rains in their time."
And through this –
all blessings,
as explained in the Ramban on the verse, that the blessing of "and I will give your rains in their time" includes within itself all blessings. And especially as the Baal Shem Tov interprets "and I will give your rains in their time",
that this refers to all physical matters. And certainly it is drawn down in spirituality.
And all this is drawn down in a revealed and manifest good below ten handbreadths, in children, life, and sustenance with ease, and in all of them with ease.
And from this "and I will give your rains in their time" also comes "and I will give peace in the land, and you shall lie down and none shall make you afraid, and I will cause evil beasts to cease out of the land, neither shall the sword go through your land",
not even a sword of peace,
And even in the time of exile, "and I will walk among you uprightly",
one stands with an erect posture,
and one goes "with a high hand",
"with our young and with our old, with our sons and with our daughters",
"a great congregation shall return here",
to our holy land,
a good and spacious land,
And "their silver and their gold with them",
both literally,
and all the more so according to the interpretation that this refers to Torah and commandments,
that one has the perfection of Torah and its commandments,
and also the perfection of the land,
"a land which the eyes of the Lord your God are upon it from the beginning of the year even unto the end of the year",
and the perfection of the people,
And there will be "and kings shall be your foster fathers and their queens your nursing mothers",
And one goes into the true and complete redemption through Mashiach our righteousness,
and with joy and a good heart,
and speedily in our actual days.
His Holiness, our Master, Teacher, and Rebbe, may he live for many good days, Amen, began to sing "He will build the Holy Temple, speedily in our days."
Afterwards he said:
Those who need to make a final blessing,
will certainly make a final blessing.
He gave the foods to R. M.Y., may he live.
After the afternoon prayer, he began to sing "He will build the Holy Temple, speedily in our days."
