At the beginning of the portion of the plague of blood1
בתחילת פרשת מכת דם1
"And the Lord said to Moses: Pharaoh's heart is heavy, he refuses to send the people" — Rashi copies the word "heavy" and explains: its translation is yekir,
"ויאמר ה' אל משה כבד לב פרעה מאן לשלח העם" — מעתיק רש"י תיבת "כבד" ומפרש: תרגומו יקיר,
and not it was heavy because it is a noun, like "for2
ולא אתיקר מפני שהוא שם דבר כמו כי2
the matter is too heavy for you."
כבד ממך הדבר.
And the reason that Rashi needed to negate the interpretation "it became heavy"
והטעם שהוצרך רש"י לשלול את הפירוש "אתיקר"
(past tense verb — "that it already was..
(פועל עבר — "שכבר נהי'..
heavy"3),
כבד"3),
and he was not satisfied
ולא הסתפק
(as is his way)
(כדרכו)
to say only the correct translation "heavy",
לומר רק התרגום הנכון "יקיר",
is not in order to establish the correct version in the Targum4
אינו כדי לקבוע את הגירסא הנכונה בתרגום4
— because it is simple that this is not the subject of Rashi's commentary on the Torah to clarify and establish versions in the Targum5
— כי פשוט שאין זה ענינו של פירוש רש"י עה"ת לברר ולקבוע גירסאות בתרגום5
— but rather because there is a plausible understanding6
— אלא מפני שיש קס"ד6
in the plain meaning of the verse to interpret that "heavy" here is a past tense verb.
בפשוטו של מקרא לפרש ש"כבד" כאן הוא פועל עבר.
And the explanation of this: in the preceding verse7
וההסברה בזה: בפסוק שלפנ"ז7
it is said "and Pharaoh's heart was strong",
נאמר "ויחזק לב פרעה",
whose translation8
שתרגומו8
"and it was strengthened"
"ואיתקף"
(like "it became heavy"),
(כמו "אתיקיר"),
and therefore there was room to interpret
ולכן הי' מקום לפרש
(as translated and explained by the Tiv'a,
(כמו שתרגמו ופירשו התיב"ע,
the Rashbam and the Ibn Ezra)
הרשב"ם והאבן עזרא)
that what is said in the following verse "Pharaoh's heart was heavy" is also in that same manner
דמה שנאמר בפסוק לאח"ז "כבד לב פרעה" הוא ג"כ באותו הדרך
(like "and it was strong")
(כמו "ויחזק")
namely — "it became heavy",
והיינו — "אתיקר",
past tense verb.
פועל עבר.
And therefore Rashi needed to negate this interpretation — "its translation is heavy and not it became heavy
ומשום הכי הוצרך רש"י לשלול פירוש זה — "תרגומו יקיר ולא אתיקר
(and the reason)
(והטעם)
because it is a noun like 'for the matter is too heavy for you'.
מפני שהוא שם דבר כמו כי כבד ממך הדבר".
But this very thing requires a reason — in the language of the Ra'ahm: who told the translator that it is a noun and not a past tense verb..
אבל הא גופא טעמא בעי — בלשון הרא"ם: מי הגיד לו למתרגם שהוא שם ולא פועל עבר..
If because we find "for the matter is too heavy for you" which is a noun, behold we also find "youth" and "old man" which are nouns and nevertheless came "and it was when Isaac was old"9
אם מפני שנמצא כי כבד ממך הדבר שהוא שם הנה מצאנו ג"כ נער וזקן שהוא שם ועכ"ז בא ויהי כי זקן יצחק9
past tense verb10..
פועל עבר10..
And furthermore, the word "ma'ein" which comes immediately after it, which is a past tense verb, forces "kaved" to be a past tense verb..
ועוד שמלת "מאן" הבא תיכף אחריו שהוא פועל עבר מכריח להיות "כבד" פועל עבר..
Because "ma'ein" which is a past tense verb indicates that his heart had already become heavy from the past time.
כי "מאן" שהוא פועל עבר מורה שכבר נהי' לבו כבד מזמן שעבר.
And in the G'vurat Ari it explains,
ובגו"א מבאר,
"And what compelled the translation to interpret it as a noun and not a past tense verb is that one cannot say that Pharaoh's heart was already heavy [so that] he already refused to send the people, and therefore 'go to Pharaoh,' for perhaps even though Pharaoh's heart was already strong, now it is not strong."
"ומה שהכריח את התרגום לפרשו שם דבר ולא פועל עבר שאין לומר שכבד לב פרעה כבר מאן לשלח העם ולכך לך אל פרעה דשמא אע"ג שכבר הי' חזק לב פרעה עתה אינו חזק".
But in Levush HaOrah, it rejects the interpretation of the G"v
אבל בלבוש האורה דוחה פירוש הגו"א
(and upholds the objection of the Ra"m)
(ומקיים קושיית הרא"ם)
— because in the first five plagues, the Holy One, blessed be He, wanted to inform<pg>29</pg>
— כי בה' המכות הראשונות רצה הקב"ה להודיע<pg>29</pg>
that Pharaoh would not pay heed to truly repent,
שפרעה לא יתן לב לשוב באמת,
And this is that "the Holy One, blessed be He, said to Moses: Behold, you have already seen that Pharaoh's heart was heavy and he refused to send the people, because his heart had already been hardened. Therefore, so that the people should not say: Even though his heart was already hardened, perhaps now his heart has softened and he will repent and send [them], therefore I do not want to bring upon him the plague of blood without warning, but go to Pharaoh etc. and warn him. And if now his heart softens, surely he will say: I will send the people, and I will not need to bring upon him the plague of blood. And if his heart is still hard, he has harmed himself, and everyone will know that he still defies Me, and it is just that I bring upon him the plague of blood."
And according to this, remains
ולפ"ז נשארת
(as above)
(כנ"ל)
The question of the Ra'am: what is the necessity to explain "kaved" as a noun,
קושיית הרא"ם: מהו ההכרח לפרש "כבד" לשון "שם דבר",
And especially that this does not fit with the continuation of the verse "ma'en go'" which is a past tense verb11?
ובפרט שאין זה מתאים עם המשך הכתוב "מאן גו'" שהוא פועל עבר11?
And it must be said that this that Rashi explains and forces the version of the Targum "yakiyr..
ועכצ"ל שזה שרש"י מפרש ומכריח גירסת התרגום "יקיר..
because it is a noun" is not founded
מפני שהוא שם דבר" אינו מיוסד
(only)
(רק)
on the proof from the verse "ki kaved mimcha hadavar",
על ההוכחה מהכתוב "כי כבד ממך הדבר",
rather from the continuation of the parshah itself; but he only is assisted for this explanation of his
כ"א מצד המשך הפרשה גופא; אלא שהוא רק מסתייע לפירושו זה
(that "kaved" is a noun)
(ש"כבד" הוא שם דבר)
from what is written "ki kaved mimcha hadavar".
ממש"נ "כי כבד ממך הדבר".

ב.
And one must say,
ויש לומר,
that Rashi's intention here is to answer a general question,
שכוונת רש"י כאן היא לתרץ שאלה כללית,
at first glance,
לכאורה,
in this verse:
בכתוב זה:
At first it is related,
בתחילה מסופר,
that the Holy One, blessed be He, said to Moses "Pharaoh's heart is heavy, he refuses to send the people",
שהקב"ה אמר למשה "כבד לב פרעה מאן לשלח העם",
and afterwards in the verses that follow12
ואח"כ בפסוקים שלאח"ז12
the text continues to relate that the Holy One, blessed be He, said to him "Go to Pharaoh etc. and say to him, Hashem..
ממשיך הכתוב לספר שאמר לו הקב"ה "לך אל פרעה גו' ואמרת אליו ה'..
sent me to you saying, Send out My people that they may serve Me..
שלחני אליך לאמר שלח את עמי ויעבדוני..
you have not listened until now..
לא שמעת עד כה..
By this you shall know that I am Hashem: behold, I am striking etc. upon the water etc. and it shall be turned to blood".
בזאת תדע כי אני ה' הנה אנכי מכה גו' על המים גו' ונהפכו לדם".
And this means that in these things in general there are two matters:
והיינו שבכללות הדברים האלו ישנם שני ענינים:
(a)
(א)
an announcement to Moses — "Pharaoh's heart is heavy etc.",
הודעה למשה — "כבד לב פרעה גו'",
(b)
(ב)
the words of his mission to Pharaoh — "Go to Pharaoh..
דברי שליחותו לפרעה — "לך אל פרעה..
and say to him etc.".
ואמרת אליו גו'".
And behold, in this, this announcement differs from the announcements of the other plagues,
והרי בזה שונה הודעה זו מההודעות של שאר המכות,
that in all of them the Holy One, blessed be He, began His words to Moses immediately with the words of the mission to Pharaoh
שבכולן התחיל הקב"ה דבריו למשה מיד בדברי השליחות לפרעה
[Except for the plague of locusts,
[מלבד במכת ארבה,
where also there was a special announcement as an introduction to the words of the mission "Come13
שגם שם היתה הודעה מיוחדת כהקדמה לדברי השליחות "בא13
to Pharaoh, for I have hardened his heart etc. in order to set these My signs in his midst, and in order that you tell etc. how I have made a mockery of Egypt etc."
אל פרעה כי אני הכבדתי את לבו גו' למען שתי אותותי אלה בקרבו ולמען תספר גו' את אשר התעללתי במצרים גו'"
(And as we explained elsewhere14
(וכמשנ"ת במק"א14
the reason for this announcement,
טעם הודעה זו,
that with this He explained the reason that He commands Moses to warn Pharaoh
שבזה הסביר הטעם שמצווה את משה להתרות את פרעה
(As per the precise wording of Rashi "Come to Pharaoh,
(כדיוק לשון רש"י "בא אל פרעה,
and warn him")
והתרה בו")
even though "I have hardened his heart etc.",
אע"פ ש"אני הכבדתי את לבו גו'",
that this is "in order that you tell etc. how I have made a mockery of Egypt",
שזהו "למען תספר גו' את אשר התעללתי במצרים",
as Rashi explains "I have mocked",
כפרש"י "שחקתי",
that He makes a mockery of Pharaoh as if he has free choice to listen or not)].
שעושה שחוק מפרעה כאילו יש לו בחירה לשמוע או לא)].
And from this itself, that this announcement that "Pharaoh's heart is heavy, he refuses to send the people" was said to Moses only as an introduction to his mission to Pharaoh
ומזה גופא שהודעה זו ד"כבד לב פרעה מאן לשלח העם" נאמרה למשה רק כהקדמה לשליחותו לפרעה
(and not as part of the things that he must say to Pharaoh15)
(ולא כחלק מהדברים שעליו לאומרם לפרעה15)
it is proven,
מוכח,
that this thing is not
שדבר זה אינו
(only)
(רק)
a matter that needs to be delivered to Pharaoh,
ענין שצריך למסור לפרעה,
but rather it pertains
אלא שזהו נוגע
(also)
(גם)
to the knowledge of Moses himself,
לידיעתו של משה עצמו,
and also,
וגם,
that so it is in its truth of the matter,
שכן הוא באמיתתו של דבר,
that the reason that the plague of blood came upon Pharaoh is because "Pharaoh's heart is heavy, he refuses to send the people."
שהטעם שבאה מכת דם על פרעה הוא מפני ש"כבד לב פרעה מאן לשלח העם".
<pg>30</pg>
<pg>30</pg>
And it is perplexing: above16,
ותמוה: לעיל16,
in the account of the sending of Moses to Pharaoh it is said,
בסיפור שילוח משה לפרעה נאמר,
that the Holy One, blessed be He, said to Moses "And I will harden the heart of Pharaoh etc. and he will not listen to you, Pharaoh."
שהקב"ה אמר למשה "ואני אקשה את לב פרעה גו' ולא ישמע אליכם פרעה".
And from this it is understood,
ומזה מובן,
that when Moses saw
דכאשר ראה משה
(after the sign of the swallowing of Aaron's staff)
(לאחרי האות דבליעת מטה אהרן)
that "and Pharaoh's heart was strong and he did not listen to them,"
כי "ויחזק לב פרעה ולא שמע אליהם",
surely he thought that this is because the Holy One, blessed be He, fulfilled His promise and hardened his heart.
בודאי חשב שזהו מפני שהקב"ה קיים הבטחתו והקשה את לבו.
And since that is so,
וכיון שכן,
how can it be said that "Pharaoh's heart is heavy" is the cause for the punishment of the plague of blood — behold the Holy One, blessed be He, is the One who made his heart heavy17?
איך אפ"ל ש"כבד לב פרעה" היא הסיבה להעונש דמכת דם — הרי הקב"ה הוא שהכביד את לבו17?
This that Moshe was commanded to say thus to Pharaoh and to tell him that he is punished because "you did not listen until now" — is understood,
זה שמשה נצטווה למסור כן לפרעה ולהגיד לו שהוא נענש משום ש"לא שמעת עד כה" — מובן,
because the Holy One, blessed be He, wanted that Pharaoh finally send Bnei Yisrael of his own will through speech after speech.
כי הקב"ה רצה שפרעה סו"ס ישלח את בנ"י ברצונו ע"י דיבור אחר דיבור.
[And likewise one should not ask — how is it indeed possible that punishment should come to Pharaoh for the lack of his will to send Bnei Yisrael from his land,
[וכן אין להקשות — איך יתכן באמת שיגיע עונש לפרעה על העדר רצונו לשלח את בנ"י מארצו,
since the reason for this was
מאחר שהסיבה לזה היתה
(not the will of Pharaoh,
(לא רצונו של פרעה,
but)
אלא)
that the Holy One, blessed be He, strengthened his heart — because this question Rashi already answered earlier on the verse18
מה שהקב"ה חיזק את לבו — כי קושיא זו כבר תירצה רש"י לעיל עה"פ18
"And I will harden",
"ואני אקשה",
and his language is "since he acted wickedly and rebelled against Me and it is revealed before Me that there is no satisfaction among the nations of the world to give a whole heart to return, it is good for Me that his heart be hardened in order to multiply upon him My signs and that you know My might".
וז"ל "מאחר שהרשיע והתריס כנגדי וגלוי לפני שאין נחת רוח באומות עו"א לתת לב שלם לשוב טוב לי שיתקשה לבו למען הרבות בו אותותי ותכירו את גבורתי".
That is,
והיינו,
that this that the Holy One, blessed be He, hardened his heart was a punishment for "he acted wickedly and rebelled against Me"19].
שזה שהקב"ה הקשה את לבו הי' עונש על "שהרשיע והתריס כנגדי"19].
But from this that this announcement was also to Moshe himself,
אבל מזה שהודעה זו היתה גם למשה עצמו,
as above,
כנ"ל,
it necessarily follows that also he must know
עכצ"ל שגם עליו לדעת
(and so it is the truth of the matter)
(ושכן היא אמיתית הדבר)
— that since "Pharaoh's heart is heavy" therefore he truly deserves punishment.
— דמכיון ש"כבד לב פרעה" לכן מגיע לו באמת עונש.
And it is perplexing,
ותמוה,
as above,
כנ"ל,
how does this fit with the words of the Holy One, blessed be He, to him previously: "And I will harden Pharaoh's heart, etc."?
כיצד מתאים זה עם דברי הקב"ה אליו לפנ"ז "ואני אקשה את לב פרעה גו'"?
3.
ג.
At first glance it is possible to explain according to Rashi on the verse18
לכאורה אפשר לתרץ ע"פ פרש"י עה"פ18
"And I will harden" — "And nevertheless in the first five plagues it is not said 'And Hashem hardened Pharaoh's heart' but rather 'And Pharaoh's heart hardened',"
"ואני אקשה" — "ואעפ"כ בחמש מכות הראשונות לא נאמר ויחזק ה' את לב פרעה אלא ויחזק לב פרעה",
that from the superficiality of the language it implies that in the first five plagues Hashem did not harden the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt,
שמשטחיות הלשון משמע שבה' המכות הראשונות לא חיזק ה' את לב פרעה מלך מצרים,
but rather he hardened himself20.
אלא הוא חיזק את עצמו20.
But when you examine well, it is impossible to explain thus,
אבל כד דייקת שפיר אא"פ לתרץ כן,
because in Rashi's commentary it is only stated that
כי בפירש"י נאמר רק ש
(in the verse)
(בכתוב)
"It is not said 'And the Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh'"; but in the words of the Holy One, blessed be He, to Moses we do not find that He informed him that in the first five plagues He would not harden his heart
"לא נאמר ויחזק ה' את לב פרעה"; אבל בדברי הקב"ה למשה לא מצינו שיודיעו שבחמש המכות הראשונות לא יקשה את לבו
(but only in the last five plagues).
(כ"א רק בחמש המכות האחרונות).
And especially if you say according to the explanation of the commentators21,
ובפרט את"ל כפי' המפרשים21,
that also in the first five plagues the Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh,
שגם בחמש המכות הראשונות הקשה ה' את לב פרעה,
except that in the verse it is not said "And the Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh",
אלא שבכתוב לא נאמר "ויחזק ה' את לב פרעה",
but rather "And the heart of Pharaoh was hardened"
כ"א "ויחזק לב פרעה"
[according to the precise wording of Rashi "And nevertheless in the first five plagues it is not said 'And the Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh' but rather 'And the heart of Pharaoh was hardened'" — and he did not write in simple language "In the first five plagues the Lord did not harden the heart of Pharaoh"
[כדיוק לשון רש"י "ואף על פי כן בחמש מכות הראשונות לא נאמר ויחזק ה' את לב פרעה אלא ויחזק לב פרעה" — ולא כתב בל' פשוטה "בחמש מכות הראשונות לא חיזק ה' את לב פרעה"
(and the like)]22.
(וכיו"ב)]22.
<pg>31</pg>
<pg>31</pg>
And as explained in the commentaries21,
וכמבואר במפרשים21,
"That in the first five plagues the Holy One, blessed be He, caused actions that strengthened his heart, like..
"דבחמש מכות הראשונות סיבב הקב"ה פעולות שנתחזק לבו כמו..
In the plague of blood, that they said by means of sorceries you do thus..
במכת דם שאמרו ע"י מכשפות אתם עושים כן..
And this is 'And Pharaoh's heart was strengthened,'
וזהו ויחזק לב פרעה,
but 'And the Lord strengthened' means that the Holy One, blessed be He, strengthened him explicitly and not through actions and causes"23.
אבל ויחזק ה' היינו שהקב"ה חזקו בפירוש ולא ע"י פעולות וסיבות"23.
And the difficulty returns to its place — since Moses heard "And I will harden Pharaoh's heart etc.,"
והדרא קושיא לדוכתא — מאחר ששמע משה "ואני אקשה את לב פרעה גו'",
how is it possible in accordance with this to inform him that "Pharaoh's heart is heavy" is the reason for the punishment of the plague of blood?
איך יתכן בהתאם לזה להודיעו ש"כבד לב פרעה" הוא טעם העונש דמכת דם?
4.
ד.
And to resolve this question Rashi explains "kaved" — "its translation is yekir and lo ityakir,
ולתרץ שאלה זו מפרש רש"י "כבד" — "תרגומו יקיר ולא אתיקר,
because it is a noun" — with this Rashi intends to emphasize clearly,
מפני שהוא שם דבר" — שבזה מתכוון רש"י להדגיש ברור,
that the intention of the Holy One, blessed be He, in "kaved lev Pharaoh" is to inform him,
שכוונת הקב"ה ב"כבד לב פרעה" להודיעו,
that this is not
שאין זה
(only)
(רק)
because He, may He be blessed, strengthened his heart
משום שהוא ית' חיזק את לבו
(for then there is no place to bring this as a cause for Pharaoh's punishment),
(שאז אין מקום להביא זה כסיבה לעונשו של פרעה),
but rather to the state of Pharaoh's heart from its own side,
אלא למצבו של לב פרעה מצד עצמו,
that this that "he refused to send the people" was not
דזה ש"מאן לשלח העם" לא הי'
(only)
(רק)
because the Holy One, blessed be He, strengthened his heart,
מפני שהקב"ה חיזק את לבו,
but that
אלא ש
(also)
(גם)
he from his own side made his heart heavy not to send Bnei Yisrael,
הוא מצד עצמו הכביד את לבו שלא לשלח את בנ"י,
and therefore he is deserving to be punished for this.
ולכן ראוי הוא להענש ע"ז.
[And along the lines of the answer in the books on the difficulty24
[וע"ד התי' בספרים על הקושיא24
— how did the Holy One, blessed be He, punish the Egyptians for enslaving Bnei Yisrael with hard labor,
— איך העניש הקב"ה המצריים על שהעבידו את בנ"י בפרך,
and behold the Holy One, blessed be He, decreed upon them "and they will serve them and afflict them"25?
והרי הקב"ה גזר עליהם "ועבדום וענו אותם"25?
— that this that the Egyptians enslaved etc. and afflicted Bnei Yisrael was not in order to fulfill the decree of the Holy One, blessed be He,
— דזה שהמצריים העבידו כו' ועינו את בנ"י לא הי' כדי לקיים גזירת הקב"ה,
but rather because of the wickedness of their heart,
אלא מפני רשעות לבם,
and therefore they were punished for this26].
ולכן נענשו על כך26].
And therefore Rashi explains that "kaved" means "heavy and not made heavy" — because through this it is clearer that the intention is the heaviness of Pharaoh's heart from his own side: if the intention of the language "kaved" is "past tense verb",
ולכן פרש"י ש"כבד" פירושו "יקיר ולא אתיקר" — כי עי"ז ברור יותר שהכוונה לכובד לב של פרעה מצד עצמו: אם הכוונה בלשון "כבד" היא "פועל עבר",
meaning that there was here an act of making heavy,
היינו שהיתה כאן פעולת הכבדה,
there is no emphasis that Pharaoh from his own side made his heart heavy,
אין הדגשה שפרעה מצד עצמו הכביד את לבו,
on the contrary — simply it must be said that it refers to the act of making heavy which is the deed of the Holy One blessed be He explicit above in the words of the Holy One blessed be He to Moses "and I will harden etc."
אדרבה — בפשטות צ"ל שקאי על פעולת ההכבדה שהיא מעשה הקב"ה המפורש לעיל בדברי הקב"ה למשה "ואני אקשה גו'"
(and again there is no place to say that this matter will be an introduction and reason for the punishment of Pharaoh)
(ושוב אין מקום לומר שענין זה יהי' הקדמה וטעם לעונש פרעה)
; and therefore Rashi explains that "kaved" means "heavy and not made heavy",
; ולכן פרש"י ש"כבד" פירושו "יקיר ולא אתיקר",
"a noun" describing the state of Pharaoh's heart — according to which it is plausible to say that the intention is that Pharaoh's heart was
"שם דבר" המתאר המצב של לב פרעה — שלפ"ז מסתבר לומר שהכוונה שלבו של פרעה הי'
(essentially)
(בעצם)
in a state of "heavy",
במצב של "כבד",
that he had a heavy heart essentially,
שהי' לו לב כבד בעצם,
and therefore he deserves punishment for not sending out the children of Israel,
ולכן מגיע לו עונש על שלא שילח את בנ"י,
as above.
כנ"ל.
5.
ה.
The essence of the Torah in Rashi:
מיינה של תורה בפרש"י:
heaviness27
כבדות27
the heart, simply its meaning — stubbornness of the heart,
הלב בפשטות ענינה — עקשות הלב,
that is not affected by anything,
שאינו מתפעל משום דבר,
and even when his intellect instructs him that he should behave in an opposite manner,
וגם כששכלו מורה לו שצריך להתנהג באופן הפכי,
and also the feeling in his heart inclines to the other side — he persists in not changing his conduct.
וגם הרגש שבלבו נוטה לצד אחר — הרי הוא מתעקש שלא לשנות את הנהגתו.
And this is the meaning of the "shell" of Pharaoh — Pharaoh [is] the letters of the neck28,
וזהו ענינה של "קליפת" פרעה — פרעה אותיות הערף28,
which indicates stubbornness,
המורה על עקשות,
"stiff-necked".
"קשה עורף".
And based on this, one must explain the depth of the intention of the sa-<pg>32</pg>
ועפ"ז יש לבאר עומק כוונת המד<pg>32</pg>
Rashi29,
רש29,
who explains "heavy
שפירש "כבד
(Pharaoh's heart)
(לב פרעה)
" — that Pharaoh's heart became like
" — שלבו של פרעה נעשה כ
(the body part called)
(חלק הגוף שנקרא)
liver,
כבד,
"Just as30
"מה30
the liver is angry, so too his heart became heavy"31
הכבד כועס אף לבו של זה נעשה כבד"31
: It is known that there are three rulers in the body32,
: ידוע שיש שלשה שליטים בגוף32,
brain and heart and liver,
מוח ולב וכבד,
corresponding to the three parts of
כנגד ג' חלקי
(powers)
(כחות)
the soul — the intellect
הנפש — השכל
(in the brain),
(במוח),
emotions
מדות
(in the heart),
(בלב),
and action
ומעשה
(in the liver).
(בכבד).
And this is the connection between heaviness of the heart and the "liver" in the body — because the matter of stubbornness relates to the power of action of the person
וזוהי השייכות בין כבדות הלב ל"כבד" שבגוף — כי ענין העקשות שייך לכח המעשה של האדם
(which is under the control of the "liver"),
(שזוהי בשליטת ה"כבד"),
that even when he has no reasoning
דגם כאשר אין לו שום הסברה
(in the intellect in the head)
(בשכל שבראש)
and no emotion
ושום רגש
(in the emotions in the heart)
(במדות שבלב)
— he does so only because of his stubbornness.
— הרי הוא עושה כן רק מחמת עקשות שלו.
And on this Rashi adds — "heavy..
ובזה מוסיף רש"י — "כבד..
honored and I will not be honored" — because the stubbornness itself can be in two ways:
יקיר ולא אתיקר" — כי העקשות גופא יכולה להיות בשני אופנים:
(a)
(א)
conduct in a manner of stubbornness,
ההנהגה באופן של עקשות,
stubbornness in action — "I will be honored"
עקשות בפועל — "אתיקר"
(active voice)
(לשון פועל)
;
;
(b)
(ב)
this conduct penetrates his entire existence,
הנהגה זו חודרת בכל מציאותו,
until a person becomes stubborn in essence and this is his adjective — "honored".
עד שנעשה אדם עקש בעצם וזהו שם התואר שלו — "יקיר".
That is: this is not only a matter of conduct of stubbornness,
כלומר: אין זה רק ענין של הנהגה של עקשות,
but rather the source of the heaviness in the soul is revealed in him,
אלא שמקור הכבדות שבנפש הוא בגילוי אצלו,
and consequently every matter — for him is in a manner of stubbornness.
ובדרך ממילא כל ענין — אצלו הוא באופן של עקשות.
And so it was with Pharaoh,
וכן הי' אצל פרעה,
that the meaning is not that he had to overcome himself in order to be stubborn against the Holy One, blessed be He,
שאין הפירוש שהי' צריך להתגבר על עצמו כדי להתעקש כנגד הקב"ה,
but rather he was "heavy"
אלא הוא הי' "כבד"
(stubborn)
(עקשן)
in essence.
בעצם.

ו.
And behold, the plagues that the Holy One, blessed be He, brought upon Pharaoh—their inner intention was to break the husk of Pharaoh33,
והנה המכות שהביא הקב"ה על פרעה כוונתן הפנימית היתה לשבור את קליפת פרעה33,
and this was done specifically through Moses our teacher,
וזה נעשה על ידי משה רבינו דוקא,
and as it is said34
וכמו שנאמר34
"See, I have made you a god to Pharaoh",
"ראה נתתיך אלקים לפרעה",
and Rashi explains: "a judge to rule over him with plagues and afflictions".
ופרש"י "שופט ורודה לרדותו במכות ויסורין".
But it is known,
אבל ידוע,
that in order to nullify an evil attribute and the like, it is "in its kind and its likeness"35
שכדי לבטל מדה רעה וכיו"ב ה"ז "במינה ודוגמתה"35
— in an attribute like it on the side of holiness.
— במדה דוגמתה בצד הקדושה.
For God has made one opposite the other36,
כי זה לעומת זה עשה האלקים36,
that every evil attribute is "opposite" an attribute like it on the side of holiness.
שכל מדה רעה היא "לעומת" מדה דוגמתה בצד הקדושה.
And so it is regarding the matter of "heaviness",
וכן הוא בענין ה"כבד",
that opposite the "heaviness" of the husk,
שלעומת ה"כבד" דקליפה,
there is a "heaviness" of holiness,
ישנו "כבד" דקדושה,
which is the matter of accepting the yoke of the kingdom of heaven that is above reason and knowledge and feeling.
שהו"ע קבלת עול מלכות שמים שלמעלה מטעם ודעת ורגש.
For in service that is according to reason and knowledge,
דבעבודה שע"פ טעם ודעת,
and also according to the emotions of the heart,
וכן ע"פ מדות שבלב,
there are changes from time to time,
ישנם שינויים מזמן לזמן,
as is seen empirically that a person does not always stand on the same level in comprehension,
כנראה בחוש שהאדם אינו עומד תמיד באותה הדרגא בהשגה,
and certainly not in the feeling of his heart in love of God and His fear; but not so the service of accepting the yoke,
ופשיטא לא בהרגש לבו באהבת ה' ויראתו; משא"כ העבודה דקבלת עול,
"heaviness" of holiness,
"כבד" דקדושה,
which is in a manner of stubbornness
שהיא באופן של עקשות
(heaviness),
(כבדות),
it is "far from changes"37.
הוא "רחוק מהשינויים"37.
And from this it is understood in our matter,
ומזה מובן בעניננו,
that in order for Moshe Rabbeinu to be able to "subdue" and break the husk of Pharaoh,
שכדי שמשה רבינו יוכל "לרדות" ולשבור את קליפת פרעה,
he needed to awaken in his soul "heaviness" of holiness.
הי' צריך לעורר בנפשו "כבד" דקדושה.
And it can be said,
ויש לומר,
that this is the hint and the inner interpretation of Rashi's words here "heavy — its Targum is yekir and not ityakkar": "its Targum" of "heavy" of Pharaoh,
שזהו הרמז והפירוש הפנימי בדברי רש"י כאן "כבד — תרגומו יקיר ולא אתיקר": "תרגומו" של "כבד" פרעה,
that is to say,
כלומר,
the concept of "heaviness" as it is interpreted in holiness,
ענין ה"כבד" כפי שנתפרש בקדושה,
its concept — is "yekir",
ענינו — "יקיר",
and it is the matter of the <pg>33</pg>
והו"ע ה<pg>33</pg>
preciousness
יקרות
("heaviness")
("הכבדות")
of the service of acceptance of the yoke in holiness.
של העבודה דקבלת עול בקדושה.
And with this Rashi explains — "precious and not made precious",
ובזה מבאר רש"י — "יקיר ולא אתיקר",
that in order to nullify the heaviness of Pharaoh it is necessary [to have] "precious and not made precious".
שכדי לבטל כבדות של פרעה צ"ל "יקיר ולא אתיקר".
And the explanation in this: in accepting the yoke there are
והביאור בזה: בקבלת עול ישנן
(in general)
(בכללות)
two levels38
שתי מדריגות38
:
:
A)
א)
accepting the yoke in the manner of accepting the yoke of a simple slave,
קבלת עול בדוגמת קבלת עול של עבד פשוט,
for even though in abandonment it is pleasant for him39
דאף שבהפקירא ניחא לי'39
and he has no desire and will in His service,
ואין לו חשק ורצון בעבודתו ית',
nevertheless he forces himself to fulfill the will of his master.
מ"מ כופה א"ע לקיים רצון אדונו.
And this accepting the yoke is below all the powers of his soul,
וקבלת עול זו היא למטה מכל כחות נפשו,
for even though he has no pleasure,
דאף שאין לו עונג,
will,
רצון,
comprehension
השגה
(intellect)
(שכל)
or feeling
או רגש
(emotions)
(מדות)
— nevertheless he forces himself in deed actually,
— הרי הוא כופה א"ע במעשה בפועל,
contrary to his will and nature.
היפך רצונו וטבעו.
b)
ב)
Acceptance of the yoke that is above all the powers of his soul — and its content,
קבלת עול שלמעלה מכל כחות נפשו — וענינה,
that his attachment to G-d is not measured and limited according to the measure of the limitation of his soul's powers
שאין התקשרותו לה' מדודה ומוגבלת כפי ערך ההגבלה של כחות נפשו
[the measure of his understanding and comprehension of G-d's greatness,
[מדת הבנתו והשגתו בגדלות האל,
or the measure of his love and fear of G-d]
או מדת אהבתו ויראתו לה']
but he gives himself over to G-d completely,
אלא הוא מוסר את עצמו לה' מכל וכל,
without measure and limitation.
בלי מדידה והגבלה.
And this acceptance of the yoke has its source in the essence of the soul,
וקבלת עול זו מקורה בעצם הנפש,
which "bears Your yoke" because it is "a unique one to unify You"40,
ש"טוענת עולך" מפני שהיא "יחידה לייחדך"40,
"a veritable part of G-d from above"41,
"חלק אלקה ממעל ממש"41,
and therefore there are no measures and limitations in the strength of the soul's attachment to G-d.
ולכן אין מדידות והגבלות בתוקף התקשרותה של הנפש בהשם.
And this is what Rashi explains — "honored and I will not be honored" — that in order to nullify the heaviness of Pharaoh,
וזהו שמפרש רש"י — "יקיר ולא אתיקר" — שכדי לבטל כבדות דפרעה,
which is a "noun",
שהוא "שם דבר",
heavy in essence,
כבד בעצם,
there must be "honored" of holiness and "I will not be honored",
צ"ל "יקיר" דקדושה ו"לא אתיקר",
that the service of G-d in acceptance of the yoke in "action" is insufficient,
שלא מספיקה עבודת ה' בקב"ע ב"פועל",
the action of acceptance of the yoke,
הפעולה דקב"ע,
which is below all the powers,
שהיא למטה מכל הכחות,
rather there must be service of G-d out of essential acceptance of the yoke,
אלא צ"ל עבודת ה' מתוך קבלת עול עצמית,
"noun",
"שם דבר",
as it is in the essence of the soul.
כפי שהיא בעצם הנפש.
The acceptance of the yoke from the aspect of "eitan" in the soul42,
הקב"ע מבחי' איתן שבנשמה42,
the "heaviness" and strength in the essence of the soul.
ה"כובד" והחוזק שבעצם הנשמה.
And on this Rashi brings the proof from the verse "like 'for the matter is too heavy for you'",
וע"ז מביא רש"י הראי' מהכתוב "כמו כי כבד ממך הדבר",
said regarding Moses,
הנאמר אצל משה,
for the nullification of the husk of Pharaoh is specifically through Moses,
כי ביטול קליפת פרעה הוא על ידי משה דוקא,
as above,
כנ"ל,
and this is the hint in Rashi "heavy — from you the matter",
וזהו הרמז בפרש"י "כבד — ממך הדבר",
that "heavy" of holiness
ש"כבד" דקדושה
(which nullifies the "heavy" of Pharaoh)
(המבטל "כבד" דפרעה)
comes "from you",
בא "ממך",
from Moses our teacher43
ממשה רבינו43
— for Moses his matter is "and we are what"44,
— כי משה ענינו "ונחנו מה"44,
the ultimate self-nullification to G‑d,
תכלית הביטול לה',
and therefore with him is the true strength and the "heaviness" which utterly nullifies the "heaviness" of Pharaoh
ולכן אצלו הוא אמיתית התוקף וה"כובד" המבטל כליל ה"כובד" דפרעה
(which is only a strength of selfhood and coarseness,
(שאינו אלא תוקף של ישות וגסות,
"Mine is my river and I made myself"45),
"לי יאורי ואני עשיתיני"45),
and "By this you shall know that I am the L‑rd"46.
ו"בזאת תדע כי אני ה'"46.
