English translation 2

The reason why the last Yom Tov

English translation 3

(the second day of Shemini Atzeret)

English translation 4

is called Simchat Torah,

English translation 5

says the Rema1

English translation 6

: "Because they rejoice and make a festive meal on it for the completion of the Torah"2.

English translation 7

It has already been said many times,

English translation 8

that a name which is agreed upon according to Torah, although it is determined because of a particular matter

English translation 9

(a cause,

English translation 10

action and the like),

English translation 11

alludes to the content and essence of the thing that bears the name; and especially according to the known3

English translation 12

that "his name which they call him in the Holy Tongue" is the life-force of the created being,

English translation 13

it is even more understood that its content is expressed in the name4.

English translation 14

From this it is understandable in our matter: although that the last day of Yom Tov is called "Simchat Torah" because of the reason that then one is "rejoicing ..

English translation 15

with the completion of the Torah",

English translation 16

but since that the name was fixed upon the entire M.L."A.,

English translation 17

it is understood that the name "Simch"T" has a connection and a bond with all matters of the day.

English translation 18

Moreover: from this itself,

English translation 19

that "completion of the Torah" is on this day,

English translation 20

it is proven that the day essentially has a connection to

English translation 21

The joy of the completion of the Torah5.

English translation 22

With this it is understood what his holy honor, our master, my father-in-law, the Rebbe said6

English translation 23

that the blessing of Shehecheyanu of Simchat Torah is not only on the holiday,

English translation 24

but also on Torah - ostensibly, after all, the blessing of Shehecheyanu is because of that which it is a holiday

English translation 25

(the second of)

English translation 26

Shmini Atzeret - since however it is said on the day that has a special name in itself - Simchat Torah

English translation 27

which is called "Acharon Shel Pesach",

English translation 28

the name itself proves that its matter is Pesach,

English translation 29

but it is the end and conclusion,

English translation 30

unlike the name Shmini Atzeres,

English translation 31

whose content does not indicate a connection to Simchas Torah]

English translation 32

Even the matters that are substantively connected to Yom Tov Sheni Shel Galuyos,

English translation 33

they too are connected to Torah7

English translation 34

and its joy8.

English translation 35

2.

ב.

English translation 36

One must, however, understand: why should the blessing of Shehecheyanu on Torah be bound specifically with Simchat Torah?

English translation 37

Moreover: it is quite difficult to say so - the joy of this day is "the completion of the Torah"9,

English translation 38

and the blessing of Shehecheyanu is generally for a new matter,

English translation 39

which in our case would seemingly have been appropriate to connect with the beginning of the Torah10.

English translation 40

that the blessing of Shehecheyanu here is indeed not connected with the actual reading and study of the Torah,

English translation 41

but it is a thanksgiving for the new joy11

English translation 42

which the person has from the aspect of "the completion of the Torah",

English translation 43

in the manner of the law in the blessing of enjoyments that "every joy of the heart that comes to a person"12

English translation 44

he must make upon it the blessing of Shehecheyanu.

English translation 45

According to this it will turn out,

English translation 46

that the blessing of Shehecheyanu is not on the Torah but on the joy of “the completion of the Torah”,

English translation 47

but from the wording of his honor, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, it is implied that the blessing is

English translation 48

on the Torah13

English translation 49

itself]

English translation 50

One must say that although the joy is determined on “the completion of the Torah”,

English translation 51

but the conclusion of the Torah is in a manner of automatically bound with the beginning of the Torah anew; because regarding Torah it is indeed not applicable a duration of time of the conclusion of the Torah,

English translation 52

since that immediately and at once,

English translation 53

afterwards - without interruption there is the constant obligation of

English translation 54

(beginning)

English translation 55

learning Torah anew - and as it is indeed the custom of Israel,

English translation 56

that immediately

English translation 57

After the conclusion of the reading of "Vezos HaBerachah" one begins to read Bereishis14

English translation 58

- and since the

English translation 59

(Simcha B)

English translation 60

completion of the Torah is it is that which gives that one should begin the Torah anew,

English translation 61

one could say that the blessing of Shehecheyanu is

English translation 62

(consequently)

English translation 63

connected with the new beginning of Torah -

English translation 64

It is however difficult from this: Since the obligation of Torah study is constant,

English translation 65

and he indeed learns Torah every day,

English translation 66

and the Torah that one completed,

English translation 67

the same Torah one begins immediately again - so in what way is it a new thing,

English translation 68

that one should make on it "Shehecheyanu"15?

English translation 69

And if because of the preciousness and importance of the Torah16

English translation 70

- it must be and it is

English translation 71

(since we are not dealing with the wicked)

English translation 72

"Every day they are in your eyes as new"17.

English translation 73

3.

ג.

English translation 74

So the explanation in this: Since Torah is the wisdom of the Holy One, blessed be He, and it is longer than the measure of the earth and broader than the sea18

English translation 75

Torah is infinite,

English translation 76

so when one finishes the Torah and one begins to read it and learn it again,

English translation 77

there is an obligation "to expand it"19

English translation 78

- to begin to learn the Torah in a new manner,

English translation 79

until a manner that is beyond comparison to the learning of the previous year.

English translation 80

And in this consists the joy of Simchat Torah and its connection to the blessing of Shehecheyanu on Torah: after one finishes the Torah, one makes a joy that one has completed one manner in the study of Torah,

English translation 81

and because of this one makes the blessing of Shehecheyanu, praise and thanksgiving, on the beginning of the study of Torah in a new manner.

English translation 82

And although the study of Torah must be with understanding and comprehension of the intellect,

English translation 83

which intellect is measured and limited — now how is it possible to say a new manner in the study of Torah which is incomparable to before?

English translation 84

-But since Torah is infinite,

English translation 85

there are also in the understanding and comprehension of Torah manners of study this above that until a new manner,

English translation 86

until a manner that is without end.

English translation 87

An example of this is found in that which the Gemara20

English translation 88

says about R’ Zeira: "When he ascended to the Land of Israel, he sat for a hundred21

English translation 89

fasts so that the Babylonian Talmud should be forgotten from him, so that I should not be distracted," and that he should be able to learn the Jerusalem Talmud.

English translation 90

Which superficially is not understood: why did he have to forget the Babylonian Talmud — in intellect there is after all a knowledge and understanding

English translation 91

(Not only not confusing,

English translation 92

but it is)

English translation 93

actually helpful for a higher knowledge and comprehension in intellect?

English translation 94

But in what matters are the words said,

English translation 95

in a manner of comprehension that is approximately and in the category of the prior comprehension,

English translation 96

however the manner of study of Talmud Yerushalmi that was by the Ra”z incomparably higher than the study of Talmud Bavli

English translation 97

(even in the elevated study of Bavli of the Ra”z),

English translation 98

because about Talmud Bavli it is said22

English translation 99

“In darkness He placed me” and about Talmud Yerushalmi they say23

English translation 100

“There is no Torah like the Torah of Eretz Yisrael” — therefore the prior study is confusing to this new study of Talmud Yerushalmi.

English translation 101

ד.

English translation 102

Based on this comes an additional explanation in the above matter,

English translation 103

And with the preface that one explains24

English translation 104

the reason why they did not establish Simchat Torah on the holiday of Shavuot

English translation 105

(at the time of the giving of the Torah),

English translation 106

but specifically on Shemini Atzeret,

English translation 107

which comes after the giving of the second tablets on Yom Kippur — because the second tablets were given to penitents,

English translation 108

and this is a greater joy than the giving of the first tablets on the holiday of Shavuot,

English translation 109

which is for the righteous;

וואָס איז לצדיקים;

English translation 110

And from this — to our matter: after the fast and forgiveness and pardon of Yom Kippur, every Jew becomes a new reality25,

English translation 111

and

און

English translation 112

Therefore,

English translation 113

when he, soon afterwards, completed the Torah on Simchat Torah,

English translation 114

he had the power to begin learning Torah in a new manner — analogous to the second tablets through which an addition came26

English translation 115

and a most elevated ascent in Torah.

English translation 116

H.

ה.

English translation 117

According to the above, one can explain the connection of the portion Vezot Haberakhah to Simchat Torah: At the beginning of the series, the Torah says that the Almighty gave the Torah to the Jewish people in a manner of "Torah tzivah lanu Moshe",

English translation 118

from which it is understood that Moshe Rabbeinu then reached the ultimate perfection in knowledge and comprehension of the Torah — and nevertheless, one learns at the end of the series27

English translation 119

"And Moshe went up from the plains of Moav to Mount Nevo",

English translation 120

about which it is stated in the writings of the Arizal28

English translation 121

that he then attained the fiftieth gate

English translation 122

("Nevo" — Nun Bo)

English translation 123

; D.

; ד.

English translation 124

H.

ה.

English translation 125

That which the Gemara says29

English translation 126

"Fifty gates of understanding were created in the world, and all were given to Moshe except one",

English translation 127

except for the fiftieth gate,

English translation 128

this is regarding the time until his passing; close to his passing, however, he also comprehended the fiftieth gate,

English translation 129

which is beyond all comparison to the forty-nine gates of understanding30.

English translation 130

And it can be said in the manner of explanation - that something like this exists by Jews every Simchat Torah,

English translation 131

when one reads and

English translation 132

one learns "And Moshe went up from the plains of Moav to Mount Nevo",

English translation 133

and one finishes learning the portion of Vezot Haberachah31,

English translation 134

and one begins again the Torah in a sublime and new manner.

English translation 135

6.

ו.

English translation 136

But it is not understandable: the above-mentioned matter,

English translation 137

that on Simchat Torah after "the completion of the Torah" one begins to learn Torah in the most elevated manner,

English translation 138

is indeed not applicable to every single Jew,

English translation 139

only to those of great comprehension and unique individuals — so what relevance does the joy of Simchat Torah have to all Jews,

English translation 140

that they too should

English translation 141

(rejoice on Simchat Torah,

English translation 142

and)

און)

English translation 143

make the blessing of Shehecheyanu on the Torah?

English translation 144

Moreover: the joy on Simchat Torah is in a manner that all Jews from your heads of your tribes to the hewer of your wood and drawer of your water rejoice <b>equally</b>,

English translation 145

as one sees from the custom of Israel that all dance together etc. — according to the above, there should have been at least a difference in the <b>greatness</b> of the joy,

English translation 146

the main joy should have been with those of comprehension etc.

English translation 147

Even stronger is the claim: if the entire matter of Simchat Torah and the blessing of Shehecheyanu were connected with the ascent in understanding and comprehension of the Torah,

English translation 148

then the joy would also have had to express itself in the same manner — that one would then occupy oneself with learning Torah with an advantage,

English translation 149

both in quantity and in quality,

English translation 150

and the understanding in Torah should evoke the joy.

English translation 151

In practice, however, we see,

English translation 152

that the joy of Torah consists entirely in dancing with the feet,

English translation 153

one dances and rejoices with the Torah specifically as it is closed and wrapped in a

English translation 154

mantle,

English translation 155

in such a way that one cannot even look into it.

English translation 156

7.

ז.

English translation 157

Will understand this by prefacing the explanation of the wording of the blessing "Shehecheyanu vekiyemanu vehigiyanu lazman hazeh" — that the wording of the blessings was instituted by the Men of the Great Assembly32

English translation 158

— is understood the greatness of the precision in this33.

The explanation that is required in the wording of the blessing,

The order of thanksgiving in general is indeed from the light to the heavy

English translation 167

(in the way of not only this but even this),

English translation 168

first one thanks for smaller things and afterwards for greater ones; now since "kiyemanu" means only the existence of a reality and "Shehecheyanu" — that the reality also has in itself life — as His Holy Honor, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, explains in the sicha34

English translation 169

— one should have first thanked for his very existence

and afterwards add a thanksgiving for his life

English translation 172

("Shehecheyanu")?

English translation 173

In the Rokeach35

English translation 174

it stands,

English translation 175

that the three expressions "Shehecheyanu vekiyemanu vehigianu" are "corresponding to Hallelu nafshi et Hashem ahalelah Hashem bechayai azamrah lelohai be'odi",

English translation 176

but this itself requires explanation: What are the three matters,

English translation 177

and how are they hinted in the three expressions?

English translation 178

ח.

English translation 179

The explanation in this: When one speaks about a praise and thanksgiving that a person thanks the Most High for that which He gave him existence and vitality until "this time",

English translation 180

a question can arise: whether his life until now was in a manner,

English translation 181

that it is fitting for this to thank with "Shehecheyanu"?

English translation 182

It can indeed be,

English translation 183

that most of his days were entirely not in pleasure and tranquility,

English translation 184

but on the contrary,

English translation 185

they were times of sorrow and depression; and as is known the reasoning of the researchers36

English translation 186

regarding the entirety of the human species,

English translation 187

that if one were to make an accounting of the various times in life,

English translation 188

it is entirely possible,

English translation 189

that the times of the opposite of good and pleasure are more than the times of pleasure and good,

English translation 190

until the sum total is,

English translation 191

in the language of Chazal37,

English translation 192

that it is "better for him had he not been created".

English translation 193

And even in a case when by the person this is not so certain,

English translation 194

it can however be that lo yatza mi'gdar safek,

English translation 195

it becomes a question on the blessing38.

English translation 196

Therefore one precedes "Shehecheyanu": just as the vitality

English translation 197

(literally - opposite of dead)

English translation 198

of a person is in a manner that he lives from his head to his foot equally,

English translation 199

It is not possible to say that in one part of the body there is vitality and in another part not - so too is the type and nature of the life of "Shehecheyanu" that this is a vitality which encompasses all the matters of man,

English translation 200

which

English translation 201

Therefore he must

English translation 202

(from the perspective of the Torah)

thank the Most High:

English translation 204

Without Torah it is not possible to say that by a person there is

English translation 205

(in most of his time)

English translation 206

such a life and vitality that one should give praise and thanks to the Most High; even when his times of good outweigh the times of the opposite of good,

English translation 207

still by him nevertheless the majority of the time is such that he has not felt vitality and liveliness.

English translation 208

For the Torah speaks about the majority — most times of the day are used for matters of eating and drinking and sleeping, which are not a person's vitality,

English translation 209

purpose and goal and desire — and also for business,

English translation 210

which in themselves — he has in them no vitality and pleasure; he does them

English translation 211

(with an external will —)

English translation 212

so that he should have his needs,

English translation 213

livelihood to support himself and his household etc.

English translation 214

But a Jew who is connected with Torah,

Torah of life,

English translation 216

that he wants that all his life should be according to Torah,

then all his actions

English translation 224

and even more — "in all your ways know Him"40.

English translation 225

It thus turns out,

English translation 226

that in his situation,

English translation 227

"for this time" every moment of his life he wants that it should be in a manner of vitality,

English translation 228

of "you who cling to the Lord

Your God <b>lives</b>”41,

English translation 230

because of which he can and he must give praise and thanks to the Most High - “Shehecheyanu” - “for this time”.

English translation 231

9.

ט.

English translation 232

According to this - what does the concept “Vekiyemanu” add upon “Shehecheyanu”,

English translation 233

for seemingly the praise of existence is a lower matter,

English translation 234

as above.

English translation 235

The explanation in this: the vitality of his own is not necessary that this should be specifically by a soul <b>in a body</b>; on the contrary,

English translation 236

the concept of vitality is here more by angels and more revealed than by souls in a body42,

English translation 237

and especially by souls above before they come down below,

English translation 238

that they stand there with a constant

attachment to the Above,

English translation 241

that due to this they have a most elevated vitality.

English translation 242

Therefore one says a special praise

English translation 243

(and additional),

English translation 244

that the vitality of the soul comes down into a body "Who has kept us alive and sustained us"; i.e.,

English translation 248

it is only in the aspect of <b>sustenance</b> - there is not heard in it the spiritual vitality - becomes drawn the

And then one says the thanksgiving also due to the body - and sustained us.

English translation 252

Yud.

English translation 253

According to the above — what does the language of Hodayah of "Vehegi'anu" add?

English translation 254

His Holy Honor, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, says in the sicha34

English translation 255

: "Hegei'anu was once translated — 'einshmatern'."

English translation 256

It is not understood wherein lies the advantage of "einshmatern"?

English translation 257

At first glance it is

English translation 258

This is entirely a deficiency.

English translation 259

Moreover: when a matter,

English translation 260

even a lofty matter,

English translation 261

is connected with pain,

English translation 262

one cannot make on it a Shehecheyanu blessing; as we find by Bris Milah that one of the reasons43

English translation 263

that one does not say on it the Shehecheyanu blessing - although this is a very great mitzvah and a thing that "they accepted upon themselves with joy"44

English translation 264

- because there is involved in it "pain of the infant"45.

English translation 265

So the explanation in this is: when one receives a thing as a gift without any work and toil, this is "bread of shame"46

English translation 266

and therefore it does not arouse in the recipient a true joy; and on the contrary,

English translation 267

this awakens in him a feeling of "shame",

English translation 268

embarrassment.

English translation 269

When, however, he receives it through his work and toil,

English translation 270

it is for him much more precious,

English translation 271

it arouses in him true joy

English translation 272

(in the manner of our sages, may their memory be for a blessing,47

English translation 273

"A person prefers his own kav to nine kav of his fellow")48.

English translation 274

Regarding this in our subject: When can be the completeness of joy of "Shehecheyanu vekiyemanu" and one should give praise and thanks to the Most High — at the time that the "Shehecheyanu vekiyemanu" comes

English translation 275

Through toil and exhaustion; but not so when his vitality according to the Torah in all his matters,

English translation 276

also in the body,

English translation 277

comes without toil,

English translation 278

then there is lacking in the completeness of joy and consequently also — in the praise and thanks to the Most High.

English translation 279

"And He brought us",

English translation 280

toil,

English translation 281

is not only a cause and a condition that one should be able to give praise and thanksgiving for "<b>Who has kept us alive and sustained us</b>",

English translation 282

but the very toil causes him joy and delight and therefore he gives a special praise and thanksgiving on the matter of "And He brought us".

English translation 283

Yes.

יא.

English translation 284

Based on this, it can be explained what the Rokeach says that the three expressions of the blessing of Shehecheyanu are "corresponding to 'Praise the Lord, O my soul; I will praise the Lord while I live; I will sing to my God while I exist': "

English translation 285

(I will praise the Lord)

English translation 286

<b>While I live</b>" is this corresponding to "Who has kept us alive" — the life of the soul as above; "I will sing to my God <b>while I exist</b>" is corresponding to "and sustained us",

English translation 287

because "while I exist" means the body which is only "my existence" — a secondary thing49.

English translation 288

"Praise the Lord, O my soul" alludes to "And He brought us" — toil,

English translation 289

because in toil he invests his <b>soul</b>50.

English translation 290

12.

יב.

English translation 291

According to the above, one will understand the concept of the blessing of Shehecheyanu on Torah which one makes on Simchat Torah:

English translation 292

After Jews read and learn the Torah throughout the entire year,

English translation 293

and one completes it on Simchat Torah,

English translation 294

there comes a new additional light of Ein Sof in Torah51,

English translation 295

and then at the time Jews begin to read

English translation 296

And learning the Torah again,

English translation 297

this is,

English translation 298

as it were,

English translation 299

a new and higher Torah,

English translation 300

and therefore all Jews rejoice and one makes the blessing of Shehecheyanu52.

English translation 301

And these three matters come afterwards to each one according to his worth and manner:

English translation 302

For Torah scholars and dwellers of the tent, it comes primarily in the study and understanding of the Torah in a new manner as mentioned above — Shehecheyanu — and in this consists their main toil — Vehegi'anu — in the understanding and attainment of the Torah,

English translation 303

and consequently it comes to them in their service in the body and in the world — Vekiyemanu — for which they give only a minority of their time.

English translation 304

By people who are good deeds and businessmen,

English translation 305

although that to a new manner in comprehension of the Torah they are not related,

English translation 306

since it comes however to a new light in Torah,

English translation 307

it effects also by them a novelty in "Shehecheyanu vekiyemanu vehigianu" according to their level they: it becomes elevated and renewed the <b>vitality</b> in their study of Torah and in all their conduct during the day according to Torah; this does also an elevation in the vekiyemanu - in the vitality of the body according to Torah; vehigianu - it comes to an addition of strength on the effort to have a Torah'dik vitality in all their matters both in the effort to carry out all the instructions of the Torah in business,

English translation 308

and eating etc. and all needs of the body,

English translation 309

both in the effort to tear oneself away from matters of the world and more

English translation 310

toil in fixed sessions

English translation 311

(fixed also - in soul)

English translation 312

in study of Torah.

English translation 313

13.

יג.

English translation 314

According to this, one will also understand the connection of Simchat Torah and its blessing "Shehecheyanu" to the portion Vezot Haberachah.

English translation 315

At first glance,

English translation 316

since Torah is understanding and comprehension,

English translation 317

how does this affect human matters that have no connection to intellect?

English translation 318

We learn in our parshah53,

English translation 319

that Torah is "mimino esh dat lamo",

English translation 320

It says in Sifri: "Just as fire, everyone who uses it makes an impression on his body54

English translation 321

so too people who toil in it are recognizable among the creatures; so too Torah scholars are recognizable in their walk and in their speech and in their garb in the market"

English translation 322

(and as the Rambam55

English translation 323

explains the details in this).

English translation 324

But the question arises on the other hand: Granted, by Torah scholars,

English translation 325

whose beginning to learn Torah again is in an entirely new manner,

English translation 326

it is understandable how this also effects a renewal and addition that is recognizable "in their walk and in their speech etc.",

English translation 327

but by Jews who are not Torah scholars,

English translation 328

what connection does the novelty in Torah that is on Simchat Torah have to them,

English translation 329

that this should

English translation 330

To also be active in their matters as above,

English translation 331

until that they should

English translation 332

(rejoice with this to such an extent - even to)

English translation 333

make the blessing of Shehecheyanu?

English translation 334

On this comes the explanation in the portion: "Torah tzivah lanu Moshe morashah kehillah" - Torah is an inheritance to every Jew56,

English translation 335

that the law57

English translation 336

by inheritance is that the age and status and condition of the heir is not relevant - Torah is a thing that every Jew receives it as an inheritance.

English translation 337

And therefore,

English translation 338

when it comes to a renewal and addition of light in Torah — on Simchat Torah,

English translation 339

there comes to every Jew a renewal and addition in his conduct and vitality according to Torah.

English translation 340

And therefore the main joy on Simchat Torah is specifically at the hakafot — not at reading and study of Torah,

English translation 341

but specifically through movements and practical actions of dancing etc. with the Torah itself — because the main joy of Simchat Torah is

English translation 342

(not so much from the side of comprehension and understanding of Torah,

English translation 343

but primarily)

English translation 344

in that Torah is “shehecheyanu” — it has made us alive,

English translation 345

in all our matters,

English translation 346

until in Asiyah58

English translation 347

in actuality.
