At the last verse of the parshah,
ביים לעצטן פסוק פון דער סדרה,
"And Nobach went and captured Kenas etc. and he called it Nobach after his name",
„ונבח הלך וילכוד את קנת גו’ ויקרא לה נבח בשמו”,
Rashi stands on the words "and he called it Nobach" and explains: to her1
שטעלט זיך רש”י אויף די ווערטער „ויקרא לה נבח” און איז מפרש: לה
It does not have a mapik hei.
אינו מפיק ה”א.
And I saw in the foundation of Rabbi Moshe HaDarshan because this name was not established for her2
וראיתי ביסודו של רבי משה הדרשן לפי שלא נתקיים לה שם זה
Therefore it is rafeh, which implies*2
לפיכך הוא רפה שמשמע*
Its midrashic interpretation is like "lo" (not).
מדרשו כמו לא.
And I wonder what he will expound in two words similar to it,
ותמהני מה ידרוש בשתי תיבות הדומות לה,
"And Boaz said to her"3,
ויאמר לה בועז ,
"to build her a house"4.
לבנות לה בית .

If Rashi holds that the explanation of R' Moshe HaDarshan is <b>not</b> consistent with <b>the plain meaning</b> of the verse — because "I am amazed what he will expound" regarding the other two words "lah" without a mappik hei — why did he initially bring down his derash?
אויב רש”י האַלט אַז דער פירוש פון ר’ משה הדרשן איז ניט אויסגעהאַלטן לויט פשוטו של מקרא -ווייל „תמהני מה ידרוש” ביי די אַנדערע צוויי ווערטער „לה” אָן אַ מפיק ה”א -פאַרוואָס האָט ער מלכתחילה אַראָפּגעבראַכט זיין דרש?
He should have also here said,
ער האָט געדאַרפט אויך דאָ זאָגן,
as one finds <b>in many</b> places5
ווי מען געפינט בכמה מקומות
in Rashi's commentary on the Torah,
אין פירוש רש”י על התורה,
that he says about a word "I do not know",
אַז ער זאָגט אויף אַ וואָרט „לא ידעתי”,
he does not know the <b>plain meaning</b> of the word — although in the midrashim of our sages of blessed memory there are on it explanations and clarifications,
ער ווייס ניט דעם פשט פון דעם וואָרט - כאָטש אַז אין מדרשי רז”ל זיינען דאָ אויף דעם פירושים וביאורים,
because since the explanations of our sages of blessed memory are entirely not according to the plain meaning,
וואָרום היות די פירושים פון חז”ל זיינען אינגאַנצן ניט ע”ד הפשט,
Rashi does not bring them in his commentary6
ברענגט זיי ניט רש”י אין זיין פירוש
which is <b>the plain meaning</b> of the verse7.
וואָס איז פשוטו של מקרא .

Why does Rashi bring first from the verse "And Boaz said to her" in Ruth
פאַרוואָס ברענגט רש”י פריער פונעם פסוק „ויאמר לה בועז” אין רות
(Writings)
(כתובים)
and then from the verse "to build her a house" in Zechariah
און דערנאָך פון פסוק „לבנות לה בית” אין זכרי’
(Prophets)
(נביאים)
- in the order of Tanakh, Prophets comes <b>before</b> Writings?
- אין סדר התנ”ך קומט דאָך נביאים פאַר כתובים?

The question of the Ramban8
די קשיא פון רמב”ן
: In Midrash Ruth9
: אין מדרש רות
there are expositions both on "And Boaz said to her" and on "to build her a house"
זיינען פאַראַן דרשות סיי אויף „ויאמר לה בועז” און סיי אויף „לבנות לה בית”
(together with the exposition on our verse "And he called its name Nobah" - "that that name did not endure for her")
(צוזאַמען מיט דעם דרש אויף אונזער פסוק „ויקרא לה נובח” - „שלא עמד לה אותו השם”)
which also answers for them the "lack of the mapik"10
וואָס פאַרענטפערט אויך ביי זיי דעם „חסרון המפיק”
- now what does Rashi say "and I wonder what he will expound"?
- היינט וואָס זאָגט רש”י „ותמהני מה ידרוש”?
as the Ramban wonders „<b>And behold </b>the master is a treasure house of Torah for laws and aggadot <b>and it escaped me </b>etc.’].
ווי דער רמב”ן וואונדערט זיך „ והרי הרב אוצר בלום לתורה להלכות ולהגדות ואשתמיטתי’ כו’”].
Even stronger
נאָך שטאַרקער
(asks the Ramban)
(פרעגט דער רמב”ן)
: also in the <b>Gemara </b>
: אויך אין גמרא
(in tractate Sanhedrin12)
(אין מס’ סנהדרין )
there is a derivation on that which the word “lah” of “to build her a house” is “not with a mapik hei” - the Gemara says,
איז דאָ אַ דרש אויף דעם וואָס דער וואָרט „לה” פון „לבנות לה בית” איז „אינו מפיק ה”א” - די גמרא זאָגט,
that the verse speaks about “flattery and haughtiness of spirit that descended to Babylon”,
אַז דער פסוק רעדט וועגן „חנופה וגסות הרוח שירדו לבבל”,
and from that which the dagesh is missing in the hei one learns that the descent
און פון דעם וואָס עס פעלט דער דגש אין ה”א לערנט מען אָפּ אַז די ירידה
(of haughtiness of spirit)
(פון גסות הרוח)
into Babylon was not in a permanent manner - “to Babylon it descended” and afterwards “it spread out there”
אין בבל איז ניט געווען אין אַ קביעות’דיקן אופן - „לבבל נחית” און דערנאָך „אישתרבובי להתם”
(to Elam).
(לעילם).
And even though that <b>Rashi</b> in his commentary on the Talmud13
און אע”פ אַז רש”י בפירושו על הש”ס
teaches,
לערנט,
that the proof from "to build her a house" that "it stretched itself there" - is
אַז די ראי’ פון „לבנות לה בית” אַז „אישתרבובי להתם” - איז
(<b>not</b> from that which "lah" does not have a mappik hei,
( ניט פון דעם וואָס „לה” האָט ניט קיין מפיק ה”א,
but)
נאָר)
from that which it says "lah" in the singular14
פון דעם וואָס עס שטייט „לה” לשון יחיד
- because since earlier it says in the verse15
- ווייל וויבאַלד אַז פריער שטייט אין פסוק
"And behold <b>two</b> women ..
„והנה שתים נשים ..
and to them ..
ולהנה ..
etc.'"
גו’”
(plural),
(לשון רבים),
which allude to
וואָס זיינען מרמז אויף
(the <b>two</b> things that descended to Babylon)
(די צוויי זאַכן שירדו לבבל)
"flattery and haughtiness of spirit",
„חנופה וגסות הרוח”,
and afterwards it says "to build <b>her</b> a house",
און דערנאָך שטייט „לבנות לה בית”,
singular - therefore it is forced from this,
לשון יחיד - איז דערפון געדרונגען,
that "when they came to build a house <b>to establish</b> in Babylon"16
אַז „כשבאו לבנות בית לקבוע בבבל”
only remained "flattery alone"16
איז נאָר געבליבן „חנופה לחודה”
(and haughtiness of spirit "stretched itself there")
(און גסות הרוח „אישתרבובי להתם”)
Nevertheless, it is not appropriate to ask in the language of astonishment "<b>And I wonder what </b>he will expound etc.",
פונדעסטוועגן איז ניט מתאים צו פרעגן בלשון תמי’ „ ותמהני מה ידרוש כו’”,
because although Rashi
וואָרום כאָטש אַז רש”י
(has a reason why he)
(האָט אַ טעם פאַרוואָס ער)
does not want to learn thus in the Gemara,
וויל ניט לערנען אַזוי אין גמרא,
it can nevertheless be that Rabbi Moshe HaDarshan indeed learned thus the plain meaning in the Gemara17.
קען דאָך אָבער זיין אַז ר’ משה הדרשן האָט יאָ אַזוי געלערנט דעם פשט אין גמרא .
B.
ב.
The explanation in this:
דער ביאור אין דעם:
It has already been said many times,
מ’האָט שוין גערעדט פיל מאָל,
that also the <b>derashot</b> of Chazal that Rashi brings down in his commentary on the Torah are "close" to the plain meaning of the verse,
אַז אויך די דרשות חז”ל וואָס רש”י ברענגט אַראָפּ בפירושו על התורה זיינען „קרוב” צו פשוטו של מקרא,
and in the language of <b>Rashi</b>18
ובלשון רש”י
-"an aggadah that settles the words of the verse, each word properly in its place."
-„אגדה המיישבת דברי המקרא דבר דבור על אופניו”.
But the derashot that are entirely not according to the plain meaning, Rashi does not bring them down
אָבער די דרשות וואָס זיינען אינגאַנצן ניט ע”ד הפשט ברענגט זיי רש”י ניט אַראָפּ
(and as above section 1).
(וכנ”ל סעיף א’).
From this it is understandable in our matter,
פון דעם איז פאַרשטאַנדיק בעניננו,
that since Rashi brings the derash of R' Moshe HaDarshan on "vayikra lah navach",
אַז וויבאַלד רש”י ברענגט דעם דרש פון ר’ משה הדרשן אויף „ויקרא לה נבח”,
it has a place in the plain meaning of the verse; and that which Rashi says "and I wonder what he will expound on two words etc.",
האָט עס אַן אָרט אין פשוטו של מקרא; און דאָס וואָס רש”י זאָגט „ותמהני מה ידרוש בשתי תיבות כו’”,
he does not mean thereby that one can <b>at all</b> not find a derash on the two words,
מיינט ער ניט דערמיט אַז מען קען בכלל ניט געפינען אַ דרש אויף די צוויי ווערטער,
rather that one can regarding them
נאָר אַז מ’קען ביי זיי
(according to Rashi)
(לויט רש”י)
not expound the "lah"
ניט דרש’נען דעם „לה”
(without a mappik hei)
(אָן אַ מפיק ה”א)
in the <b>same</b> manner as he expounds here - a derash close <b>to the plain meaning</b> of the verse - because the derashot on them that exist in the midrash
אין דעם זעלבן אופן ווי ער דרש’נט דאָ - אַ דרש קרוב לפשוטו של מקרא - ווייל די דרשות אויף זיי וואָס זיינען דאָ אין מדרש
(and Talmud)
(וש”ס)
are entirely not according to the plain meaning19
זיינען לגמרי ניט ע”ד הפשט
(as below section 4 and onward).
(כדלקמן סעיף ד’ ואילך).
Based on this, Rashi’s wording is also precise: “<b>And I am amazed </b>what he will expound etc.” — not “and it is difficult for me” and the like — because this is not a <b>difficulty </b>and contradiction to the exposition of R’ Meir HaDarshan here,
עפ”ז איז אויך מדויק לשון רש”י „ ותמהני מה ידרוש כו’” - ניט „וקשה לי” וכיו”ב - ווייל דאָס איז ניט קיין קשיא און סתירה צום דרש פון ר”מ הדרשן דאָ,
but an amazement,
נאָר אַ תמי’,
what kind of exposition will he say on the two other verses
וואָס פאַר אַ דרש וועט ער זאָגן אין די צוויי אַנדערע פסוקים
(words)
(ווערטער)
that regarding those two words the exposition is in a different manner,
אַז ביי יענע צוויי ווערטער איז דער דרש באופן אחר,
which is indeed <b>not </b>consistent with the plain meaning of Scripture; because,
וואָס איז טאַקע ניט אויסגעהאַלטן לויט פשוטו של מקרא; ווייל,
as mentioned once,
ווי גערעט אַמאָל,
it can be said that in the Prophets and Writings there are so many verses and words that one must interpret them not according to the plain meaning20
י”ל אַז אין נביאים וכתובים זיינען דאָ כו”כ פסוקים און ווערטער וואָס מען מוז זיי טייטשן ניט ע”פ פשטות
— unlike the Five Books of Moses where one must interpret a verse specifically according to its plain meaning21],
-אַנדערש ווי חמשה חומשי תורה וואו מען דאַרף טייטשן אַ פסוק לויט פשוטו דוקא ],
Rashi wonders - "ותמהני" - "מה ידרוש כו'": What will R' Moshe HaDarshan expound on the other two words "לה" - whether these will be expositions that are close to the simple meaning of the verse,
רש”י וואונדערט זיך - „ותמהני” -„מה ידרוש כו’”: וואָס וועט ר’ משה הדרשן דרש’נען אויף די אַנדערע צוויי ווערטער „לה” - צי דאָס וועלן זיין דרשות וואָס זיינען קרוב לפשוטו של מקרא,
and consequently - "מצאתי לו חבר" to the exposition on our verse; or the expositions that are in the Midrash
ובמילא - „מצאתי לו חבר” צום דרש אויף אונזער פסוק; אָדער די דרשות שבמדרש
(and Talmud)
(וש”ס)
and the like which are not according to the simple meaning
וכיו”ב וואָס זיינען ניט ע”ד הפשט
(and consequently - "לא מצאתי לו חבר").
(ובמילא - „לא מצאתי לו חבר”).
3.
ג.
To explain the matter, one must first explain what Rashi says "לה is not with a mapik hei ..
להסברת הענין דאַרף מען פריער מבאר זיין וואָס רש”י זאָגט „לה אינו מפיק ה”א ..
that its meaning from its exposition is like 'לא'": At first glance, Rashi here means to say,
שמשמע מדרשו כמו לא”: בהשקפה ראשונה מיינט דאָ רש”י צו זאָגן,
that it is as if it stood in the verse "לא
אַז דאָס איז כאילו ס’וואָלט געשטאַנען אין פסוק „לא
(Nabach)
(נבח)
- the name of the city is not Nabach
- דער נאָמען פון שטאָט איז ניט נבח
(because "this name did not endure for her").
(וואָרום „לא נתקיים לה שם זה”).
But the explanation is <b>the opposite of</b> the plain meaning of the verse
אָבער דער פירוש איז היפך פשוטו של מקרא
(and consequently the opposite of Rashi’s rule in his commentary on the Torah18
(ובמילא היפך פונעם כלל פון רש”י בפירושו על התורה
- “I came only for its plain meaning”),
- „אני לא באתי אלא לפשוטו”),
because with “and he called it Nobach by his name” the verse means,
וואָרום מיט „ויקרא לה נבח בשמו” מיינט דער פסוק,
in its plain sense,
בפשטות,
to relate that Nobach called the city by his name - “Nobach”;
צו דערציילן אַז נבח האָט די שטאָט אָנגערופן מיט זיין נאָמען -„נבח”;
But Rashi is precise: “that its meaning <b>according to its midrashic interpretation</b> <b>is as if</b> not”23
נאָר רש”י איז מדייק „שמשמע מדרשו כמו לא”
(and not that “its meaning is not”
(און ניט אַז „משמעו לא”
(literally)),
(ממש)),
that is: the “heh is not pronounced” is meant to hint,
דאָס הייסט: דער „אינו מפיק ה”א” מיינט צו מרמז זיין,
that the matter about which the verse speaks is “weak”,
אַז די זאַך וועגן וועלכער דער פסוק רעדט איז „רפה”,
is a weak reality24
איז אַ שוואַכע מציאות
- Nobach indeed gave the name “Nobach”
- נבח האָט טאַקע געגעבן דעם נאָמען „נבח”
(therefore it does not say “not”),
(וואָס דערפאַר שטייט ניט „לא”),
but this was in a weak manner,
דאָס איז אָבער געווען אין אַ שוואַכן אופן,
the name had no permanence25.
דער נאָמען האָט ניט געהאַט קיין קיום .
With this is simply answered why one cannot use the same derash
דערמיט ווערט פאַרענטפערט בפשטות פאַרוואָס מ’קען ניט נוצן דעם זעלבן דרש
(according to the plain meaning)
(ע”ד הפשט)
in the verse "And Boaz said to her":
אין פסוק „ויאמר לה בועז”:
In the Scroll of Ruth
אין מגילת רות
(there26)
(דאָרט )
it stands,
שטייט,
that Ruth said to Boaz "I will not be like one of your maidservants
אַז רות האָט געזאָגט צו בועז’ן „לא אהי’ כאחת שפחותך
("I am not important as one of your maidservants"27
(„איני חשובה כאחת מן השפחות שלך”
- and as an answer to her words the verse continues)
- און אַלס ענטפער אויף אירע רייד איז דער פסוק ממשיך)
"And Boaz said to her at mealtime, come here and eat, etc.'"
ויאמר לה בועז לעת האוכל גשי הלום ואכלת גו’”.
The midrash expounds on "And Boaz said to <b>her</b>"
דרש’נט דער מדרש אויף „ויאמר לה בועז”
("her" without a mappik hei),
(„לה” אָן אַ מפיק ה”א),
that Boaz answered her: "Heaven forbid, you are <b>not</b> from the maidservants
אַז בועז האָט איר געענטפערט: „חס ושלום אין את מן האמהות
(handmaids)
(שפחות)
but from the matriarchs
אלא מן האימהות
(Sarah, Rebecca, etc.28)
(שרה רבקה כו’ )
4.
ד.
i.
ד.
e.
ה.
that on what she said "I will not be like one of your maidservants" Boaz answered "to her" - "<b>no</b>",
אַז אויף דעם וואָס זי האָט געזאָגט „לא אהי’ כאחת שפחותך” האָט בועז געענטפערט „לה” - „ לא ”,
"It is not so as you have spoken"29.
„לא כן הדבר כאשר דברת” .
It is understood that this exposition is here not at all maintained in the plain sense - here one cannot say that it is "its midrash is like not",
איז מובן אַז דער דרש איז דאָ כלל ניט אויסגעהאַלטן אין דרך הפשט - דאָ קען מען ניט זאָגן אַז ס’איז „ מדרשו כמו לא”,
because the words "there is not with from the matriarchs" are not, heaven forbid, in a weak manner,
ווייל די ווערטער „ אין את מן האמהות” זיינען ניט ח”ו באופן רפה,
but absolute negation30.
נאָר שלילה לגמרי .
And similarly in the verse "to build her a house":
ועד”ז אין פסוק „לבנות לה בית”:
Indeed, it is true that "haughtiness of spirit" was in Babylon in a "weak" manner,
אמת טאַקע אַז „גסות הרוח” איז געווען אין בבל באופן „רפה”,
without a permanence
אָן אַ קיום
("spreading out there")
(„אישתרבובי להתם”)
- but according to the simple meaning of Scripture,
- אָבער לויט פשוטו של מקרא,
the verse "to build a house for Him" does not speak about "haughtiness of spirit",
רעדט ניט דער פסוק „לבנות לה בית” וועגן „גסות הרוח”,
but exclusively about "flattery"; and as brought earlier
נאָר אויסשליסליך וועגן „ חנופה ”; און ווי געבראַכט פריער
(section 1)
(סעיף א’)
from the commentary of Rashi on the Talmud,
פון פירוש רש”י לש”ס,
that from that which the verse says "to her" in singular - not "to them" in plural
אַז פון דעם וואָס דער פסוק זאָגט „לה” לשון יחיד - ניט „להן” לשון רבים
(as earlier)
(ווי פריער)
- it is proven,
- איז מוכח ,
that the verse speaks only about one thing,
אַז דער פסוק רעדט נאָר וועגן איין זאַך,
"flattery alone",
„חנופה לחודה”,
because "flattery" is not "spreading out there" - it remained in Babylon permanently
ווייל „חנופה” איז ניט „אישתרבובי להתם” - זי איז געבליבן אין בבל אויף שטענדיק
- then one cannot interpret that the "to her"
-קען מען דאָך ניט טייטשן אַז דער „לה”
(without a mappik hei)
(אָן אַ מפיק ה”א)
singular letter is alluding to another thing and that which was there in a "weak" manner.
ל’ יחיד איז מרמז אויף נאָך אַ זאַך און וואָס איז דאָ געווען באופן „רפה” .
E.
ה.
But one must understand:
מען דאַרף אָבער פאַרשטיין:
According to the exposition in Midrash Ruth, the verse "to build her a house" alludes to the falsehood of Shinar
לויטן דרש אין מדרש רות איז דער פסוק „לבנות לה בית” מרמז אויפן שקר פון שנער
(Babylonia),
(בבל),
and the "her" without a mappik hei is "teaches that falsehood has no foothold" — so Rashi could have accepted that exposition,
און דער „לה” אָן אַ מפיק ה”א איז „מלמד שאין לשקר תשועה” - האָט דאָך רש”י געקענט אָננעמען דעם דרש,
which is similar to his commentary on "and he called its name Nobah" — the falsehood is present in reality,
וואָס איז בדומה צו זיין פירוש אויף „ויקרא לה נבח” -דער שקר איז דאָ במציאות,
but it is only in a "weak" manner,
ס’איז אָבער נאָר באופן „רפה”,
since "falsehood has no foothold"
היות אַז „אין לשקר תשועה ”
(it has no permanence)34
(עס האָט ניט קיין קיום)
And this would also be consistent with Rashi's commentary on the Talmud,
און דאָס וואָלט אויך געווען בהתאם מיט פירוש רש”י אויף ש”ס,
that "to build her a house" refers to "flattery",
אַז „לבנות לה בית” גייט אויף „חנופה”,
for "flattery" is also falsehood35,
וואָרום „חנופה” איז אויך שקר ,
as Rashi interprets36
ווי רש”י טייטשט
"flattery" — "they pretend to be pious".
אָפּ „חנופה” - „שמראין עצמם חסידים”.
And the explanation of this37
והביאור בזה
: If one were to say that with the “lah” without a mappik heh the verse intends to hint at a reality of “rafah” — flattery and falsehood that has no salvation — then the question arises: why is the emphasis only regarding flattery alone,
: אויב מ’זאָל זאָגן אַז מיטן „לה” אָן אַ מפיק ה”א וויל דער פסוק מרמז זיין אויף אַ מציאות „רפה” - חנופה ושקר שאין לו תשועה -שטעלט זיך די קשיא: פאַרוואָס איז די הדגשה נאָר בנוגע חנופה אַליין,
and <b>not</b> also regarding haughtiness of spirit
און ניט אויך בנוגע גסות הרוח
(and on the contrary,
(ואדרבה,
this is more plausible regarding haughtiness of spirit)
דאָס איז מסתבר יותר ביי גסות הרוח)
which descended to Babylon
וואָס איז ירדה לבבל
(specifically,
(דוקא,
only)
נאָר)
in a manner of “rafah”
אין אַ אופן פון „רפה”
(“it stretched itself there”)38
(„אישתרבובי להתם”)
as above?
כנ”ל?
From that which the verse says “lah” in the <b>singular</b> — that it speaks here <b>only</b> about one thing,
פון דעם וואָס דער פסוק זאָגט „לה” לשון יחיד - אַז מ’רעדט דאָ נאָר וועגן איין זאַך,
flattery — it is proven,
חנופה - איז מוכח,
a)
א)
that the verse is not about the matter of
אַז דער פסוק איז ניט אויסן דעם ענין פון
(that which flattery)
(דעם וואָס חנופה)
has no salvation,
אין לו תשועה,
and b)
און ב)
the verse means the descent of flattery into Babylon in a <b>permanent</b> manner
דער פסוק מיינט די ירידה פון חנופה אין בבל באופן קבוע
(not like “it stretched itself there” of haughtiness of spirit).
(ניט ווי „אישתרבובי להתם” פון גסות הרוח).
6.
ו.
According to the above, it is also understandable why Rashi precedes the verse from Ruth before the verse from Zechariah:
ע”פ כהנ”ל איז אויך פאַרשטאַנדיק פאַרוואָס רש”י איז מקדים דעם פסוק פון רות פאַר דעם פסוק פון זכרי’:
In the verse "And Boaz said to her"
אין דעם פסוק „ויאמר לה בועז”
(from Ruth)
(פון רות)
the drash itself is the opposite of the plain meaning: according to the drash, "vayomer lah" means "vayomer lo",
איז דער דרש גופא היפך הפשט: לויטן דרש מיינט „ויאמר לה” -„ויאמר לא ”,
as above; and therefore Rashi rejects this drash earlier,
כנ”ל; און דערפאַר איז רש”י שולל דעם דרש פריער,
because it is further from the plain meaning than the drash on the verse "livnot lah bayit",
ווייל ער איז ווייטער פון דרך הפשט ווי דער דרש אויפן פסוק „לבנות לה בית”,
which is more compatible with the plain meaning
וואָס איז יע מתאים צום דרך הפשט
(for "lah" hints at a weak reality — "ishtarbuvei l’hatam" or "ein lo teshua"),
(וואָרום „לה” איז מרמז אויף אַ מציאות רפה -„אישתרבובי להתם” אָדער „אין לו תשועה”),
but it is difficult to learn this way due to the change in the text from plural to singular,
נאָר ס’איז שווער אַזוי צו לערנען מצד דעם שינוי הכתוב פון לשון רבים צו לשון יחיד,
as above.
כנ”ל.
7.
ז.
from the wine of Torah in the commentary of Rashi:
פון יינה של תורה אין דעם פירוש רש”י:
All three places where it says "lah" without a mappik hei speak in connection with a reality of non-holiness: in our parshah it speaks about a captured city of the Emorite; "And Boaz said to her" - about Ruth <b>the Moabite</b>; and "to build her a house" - about
די אַלע דריי מקומות וואו עס שטייט „לה” אָן אַ מפיק ה”א ריידן בשייכות צו אַ מציאות פון ניט־קדושה: אין אונזער פרשה רעדט זיך וועגן אַן איינגענומענער שטאָט פון אמורי; „ויאמר לה בועז” - וועגן רות המואבי’ ; און „לבנות לה בית” - וועגן
(haughtiness of spirit and)
(גסות הרוח ו)
flattery
חנופה
(falsehood)
(שקר)
of Babylon.
פון בבל.
And therefore it says "lah" without a mapik hei,
און דערפאַר שטייט „לה” אָן אַ מפיק ה”א,
to hint,
צו מרמז זיין,
that the reality of leu"z is a "weak" reality: only holiness is a true and eternal reality,
אַז די מציאות פון לעו”ז איזאַ מציאות „רפה”: נאָר קדושה איז אַ מציאות אמיתית ונצחית,
but leu"z is not a true reality,
אָבער לעו”ז איז ניט קיין מציאות אמיתית,
and consequently it is not enduring39.
ובמילא איז זי ניט קיין בר קיימא .
On this Rashi says "and I wonder what he will expound" on the verses "And Boaz said to her, 'To build her a house'":
אויף דעם זאָגט רש”י „ותמהני מה ידרוש” אין די פסוקים „ויאמר לה בועז לבנות לה בית”:
Granted, our verse where the discussion is about the subjugation of the foreign nations
בשלמא אין אונזער פסוק וואו דער מדובר איז וועגן אתכפיא פון לעו”ז
(and not about their being transformed into holiness)40
(און ניט וועגן זיין נתהפך ווערן לקדושה)
- "And he captured" etc. - fits the hint of "to her" with a mapik hei,
- וילכוד גו’ - פּאַסט דער רמז פון „לה”אָןאַ מפיק ה”א,
which hints that the reality of the foreign nations is not transformed;
וואָס איז מרמז ווי די מציאות פון לעו”ז ווערט ניט נתהפך;
But in the other two verses, it speaks about a reality of foreign nations as they become transformed into holiness: Ruth the Moabite converted and was elevated to the highest levels of holiness,
אָבער אין די אַנדערע צוויי פסוקים רעדט זיך דאָך וועגן אַ מציאות פון לעו”ז ווי זי ווערט נתהפך לקדושה: רות המואבי’ האָט זיך מגייר געווען און איז נתעלה געוואָרן צו די העכסטע מדרגות פון קדושה,
until she is like one "of the matriarchs"; and "to build her a house" - the "falsehood" of Babylon - means inwardly,
ביז אַז זי איז כאחת „מן האימהות”; ועד”ז „לבנות לה בית” -דער „שקר” פון בבל - מיינט בפנימיות,
the give-and-take of the Babylonian Talmud41
די שקו”ט פון תלמוד בבלי
which "was drawn down in darkness...
וואָס „נשתלשלה בחשך ..
even in falsehood"42,
אפילו בשקר” ,
and specifically through this "He placed me in darkness...
און דוקא דורך דעם „במחשכים הושיבני ..
this is the Talmud of Babylon"43
זה תלמודה של בבל”
is brought about "to build her a <b>house</b>",
ווערט אויפגעטאָן דער „לבנות לה בית ”,
the highest level in Torah - the aspect of "house" in Torah44,
די העכסטע דרגא אין תורה - בחי’ „בית” שבתורה ,
"a faithful house"45
„בית נאמן”
And since here it speaks about lo"z as it becomes transformed into holiness,
און וויבאַלד אַז דאָ רעדט זיך וועגן לעו”ז ווי דאָס ווערט נתהפך לקדושה,
does not fit on this the "lo" without a mapik hei,
פּאַסט אויף דעם ניט דער „לה” אָן אַ מפיק ה”א,
d'mameh nafshecha: the kelipah itself has become entirely nullified,
דממה־נפשך: די קליפה עצמה איז אינגאַנצן בטל געוואָרן,
it is "lo" literally,
ס’איז „לא” ממש,
and from the aspect of the level of holiness - it must stand with a dagesh specifically,
און מצד דרגת הקדושה - דאַרף דאָ שטיין מיטאַ דגש דוקא,
the greatest intensity,
תוקף הכי גדול,
and on the contrary - specifically in the transformation of darkness to light is seen the true "intensity" of holiness46.
ואדרבה - דוקא אין אתהפכא חשוכא לנהורא זעט זיך דער אמת’ער „תוקף” פון קדושה .
